While much of the attention at the Peugeot display in Paris was focused on the RC HYmotion4 and Prologue concepts, the company also had a special technological demonstrator version of the 308 hatchback with Stop and Start technology on display.
Power comes from the 1.6 liter HDi engine which produces 82 kW (about 112 bhp) but thanks to Stop and Start technology fuel consumption for the combined cycle is only 4.1 litres/100 km while C02 emissions are reduced to 109g/km.
The technology works by turning off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop at traffic lights or in congestion, then restarts the engine automatically when the accelerator is pushed. The system is powered by a battery which is recharged during deceleration. Further fuel saving are aided by an electronically-controlled 6 speed manual gearbox. All together these systems work to dramatically increase fuel economy up to 15% in urban driving.
Don’t look for this special 308 at dealership anytime soon, as the company is currently studying the technology for production in 2011.
Micro-hybridation: simplicity and efficiency
Thanks to Stop & Start technology, which will make its appearance on Peugeot’s production lines from 2011, the 308 1.6 litre HDi FAP BMP6 with a power of 82 KW (≈ 112 bhp) presented on the stand of the Paris Motor Show offers, a high level specification and fuel consumption of only 4.1 litres/100 km, with CO2 emissions of 109g/km in the combined cycle.
Among the vehicles exhibited by Peugeot at the Paris Motor Show, one, a “standard-looking” 308 hatchback, is in fact a “technological demonstrator” of the future Stop & Start system being studied by its engineers.
This “micro-hybridisation” technology places the engine on standby when ever the vehicle comes to a halt (at a stop sign or a red traffic light, in a traffic hold-up, etc…) and then restarts it instantaneously (in just 480 ms) without any intervention from the user. This ability, however, is even harder to achieve in the case of diesel engines, particularly an engine of this capacity. In addition, an energy recovery system is included which recharges the battery during phases of deceleration.
This 308 1.6 litre HDi FAP BMP6 therefore forms a particularly efficient unit with its economic, high-performance HDi engine, delivering a power of 82 kW (≈112 bhp), its particulate emission filter (FAP) eliminating soot particles, its electronically-controlled 6 speed manual gearbox (BMP6) –improved driveability and reduced fuel consumption – together with the all new Stop & Start system.
The latter gives the vehicle a fuel consumption of only 4.1 litres/100 km, the equivalent of 109 g/km of CO2 in the combined cycle. Naturally, the system is even more efficient when used for urban driving (a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 15% according to traffic density). It also reduces noise and vibration to a minimum during the car’s stop phases.
