Press Release

Audi is honing the character of its flagship: from September, the Audi A8 will exhibit notably enhanced qualities. An even more precise driving feel, superior ride and acoustic comfort and subtle refinements to the design and interior underline the exceptional position of the sportiest saloon in the luxury class. Just how well the A8 combines sporty, elegant design with superlative handling characteristics, supreme comfort and exemplary eco-friendliness is illustrated by the Audi A8 2.8 FSI: with CO2 emissions of 199 grams per kilometre it is the best by far in its class.

Impressive handling characteristics, pioneering technology and exclusive design and equipment – the Audi A8 defines the notion of sports appeal in the luxury segment in a distinctive, masterly way. As the flagship of the brand, the A8 embodies the progressivenees of Audi: its extremely rigid lightweight aluminium body built according to the Audi Space Frame principle, the potent FSI and TDI powerplants with direct injection, quattro permanent four-wheel drive and the highly praised MMI operating system are only some of the elements employed by Audi to demonstrate its proverbial Vorsprung durch Technik in the luxury class.

The best fuel consumption figures in its class

New in the model range is the Audi A8 2.8 FSI. With FSI petrol direct injection and the innovative Audi valvelift system AVS, this engine develops 154 kW (210 bhp), producing its maximum torque of 280 Newton-metres across a wide speed range from 3,000 to 5,000 rpm. These ample reserves and – thanks to the aluminium Space Frame body – remarkably low vehicle weight of only 1690 kilograms ensure supreme acceleration in every situation. The A8 2.8 FSI sprints from 0 to 100 in 8.0 seconds, its top speed being 238 km/h.

Despite these convincing performance figures the A8 with the 2.8-litre FSI engine achieves top marks in its class in terms of fuel consumption: an average of only 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres, according to the standard test method. This corresponds to a CO2 figure of only 199 grams per kilometre.

Saloon for a unique driving experience

The entire model range offers a new driving experience: To this end, the A8 has been consistently developed in many areas and refined in terms of its unique blend of sportiness and elegance, superiority and sophistication. The rack-and-pinion steering with variable steering gear ratios and servotronic speed-dependent power assistance has been optimised and is more direct. Shock absorbers, bearings and adaptive air suspension settings have been modified. As a result, the A8 responds more spontaneously to steering inputs, tackles winding country roads with precision yet – seemingly of its own volution – maintains calm and supreme straight-line stability at high speeds.

Exceptional comfort in terms of suspension and acoustics

Similarly to the handling characteristics, ride comfort has also been improved: the standard adaptive air suspension is now more responsive to minor irregularities in the road surface. The continuously variable shock absorbers feature new seals to reduce friction, new valves optimise the characteristics and the entire hydraulics system has been retuned. The A8 even moves smoothly over transverse joints, with no vibration whatsoever. Together with the package designed to insulate rolling and road noise, the luxury saloon from Audi offers outstanding comfort.

The acoustics of the A8 have been enhanced and optimised throughout by using innovative materials – after all, noise insulation at Audi is always viewed under the aspect of intelligent lightweight construction. The result: without any additional weight, the Audi A8 exhibits the lowest rolling, road and ambient noise level in its class. The Audi A8 is one of the quietest cars in the world – an important element for relaxed comfort on long journeys in the saloon.

Comfort and safety with assistance systems

The Audi A8 supports the driver with state-of-the-art assistance systems. These provide comfort and convenience on long journeys, helping to keep the driver fit and alert – and are therefore decisively important for safety, too. Audi side assist utilises intelligent radar technology. The system is specially designed for lane-changing manoeuvres, alerting the driver to hazardous situations: if another vehicle moves into the critical zone, yellow LEDs in the housing of the exterior mirror light up permanently. If, despite the warning, the driver of the A8 sets the indicator lever to change lanes, the LEDs become brighter and flash rapidly for about one second. It is virtually impossible to overlook this impulse because the human eye is highly sensitive to changes in contrast in the peripheral field of vision.

Audi lane assist alerts the driver if he/she inadvertently moves out of the lane. A small camera, located on the windscreen above the rear-view mirror, monitors the road in front of the vehicle; a high-performance computer identifies the lane markings. If the driver drifts on to one of these lines without indicating, Audi lane assist signalises this accordingly by causing the steering wheel to vibrate.

Progressive design language, with specific refinements

The clear and progressive design language of the Audi A8 is characterised by its timeless quality. New touches were added to the exterior, for instance, but only in specific yet effective areas – from the single-frame grille to new exterior mirrors with integrated indicator and new wheel designs through to new-look LED taillights. New paint finishes complete the range as do high-quality aluminium applications, new colours and inlays for the interior.

Continuing on the road to success

Hence the Audi A8 is clearly on the road to success. With over 100,000 vehicles sold so far the current-generation model including both top-of-the-range versions, the Audi A8 W12 and Audi S8, has already surpassed the sales total of its predecessor.

Year for year, it continues to achieve sales growth in an overall stagnating market segment. The reason: while the A8 constantly attracts customers of other brands with its clear personality, the product loyalty and repurchase rate among A8 drivers is at the same time higher than average.

When it comes to the trade press and its readers, the A8 also has much to celebrate. It regularly picks up awards as the best car in the luxury class – from "auto, motor und sport" in Germany, for example, from "Auto Express" in the UK or "AutoWeek" in the US.

The art of timeless elegance

Audi A8 drivers frequently cite the sporty yet elegant design as one of their main reasons for buying the saloon. They appreciate the harmonious blend of clarity and dynamics, lightness and elegance. After all, the top model of the four-ring brand embodies the philosophy of Audi design in a particularly compelling way.

Even at first glance, its strikingly powerful proportions clearly identify the A8 as an Audi. The flat front section, the imposing wheels and the short overhangs visualise the notion of dynamics upon which the entire vehicle is based. The side view, too, reveals its athletic presence: the gentle curve of the roof line is reminiscent of a coupé and shifts the visual focal point to the rear. Expansive, arching surfaces are framed by precise lines. Every line, each small element has a purpose here: no detail appears to be pure decoration. The single-frame radiator grille lends the face of the A8 a look of determination and supremacy.

The A8 masters the art of timeless elegance from every angle. Hence the design has been accentuated in carefully selected areas only: from September 2007 the single-frame grille on six-cylinder models will sport a high-gloss black finish. The eight-cylinder versions can be recognised by horizontal chrome applications, while the top W12 and S8 models are distinguished by double vertical chrome struts.

Perfect synthesis of design and function

The new exterior mirrors on the A8 illustrate the combination of elegance and functionality that is typical of Audi. The LED side turn signals are harmoniously incorporated; the warning lights for the optional assistance system Audi side assist are located on the inside of the mirror housing. The new chrome applications on the door handles add an extra touch.

The elaborate wheels in a new design, the 18-inch wheel with a 10-spoke design or the 19-inch wheel with a 5-spoke design are in themselves small works of art.

The comprehensive colour range has been extended by new tones Impala Beige, Avus Silver, Cherry Black and Ice Silver. Thanks to the additional range from the Audi exclusive programm from quattro GmbH and its extensive customisation options, the A8 can be precisely adapted to reflect personal preferences and tastes.

New design for LED taillights

The rear view is distinguished by lights employing LED technology. These have been given a new look for the 2008 model year, which accentuates the modern light technology with extremely fast-reacting LEDs even further: each diode has its own reflector, visible through the clear cover. A total of 58 LEDs for rear light, brake light and turn signal lights are clustered in each of the two taillight units. The rear light LEDs encircle the area of the brake light LEDs, creating a distinctive night design.

Interior demonstrates high quality standards

The interior is the perfect embodiment of the sophistication that is typical for Audi and the exceptional high quality standards of the brand. The instruments and controls have been designed with great attention to detail – and with a level of craftsmanship that is evident at every glance and with every touch.

The generous roominess, the comfortable seats and the spacious compartment form the basis for a feeling of comfort that helps and promotes the driver’s concentration and that of his/her companions, even on long journeys.

The cockpit is distinguished by the circular instruments with luminous white needles on grey dials set in aluminium-look tubes, by the rising centre console – reminiscent of a sports car – and by the retractable seven-inch screen of the MMI operating system. The screen cover on the new A8 is in Piano finish.

Additional highlights in the interior are provided by aluminium applications on the multifunction steering wheel, glove box and door pockets. On eight-cylinder models the lower inlay is now finished in Brushed aluminium titanium grey. Each A8 is characterised by the high quality of each and every surface and its perfect craftsmanship.

Comprehensive range of design options

Also in the interior, additional colours enhance the comprehensive range of design options. The seats are now also available in cardamom beige, linen beige or paranut brown – with a choice of Verdi cloth, Valcona leather, Leather/Alcantara, Natural leather or Satin Nappa leather. Various leather packages underline the quality of this exquisite natural material, through to the full leather trim for cockpit, doors and rear. The new fine wood trim options for the Audi A8 are Walnut mid-brown matt finish and Vavona wood assam grey. With this wide range of options, an Audi A8 to suit every taste and every lifestyle is attainable – especially since the Audi exclusive programme also enables drivers to create their own unique, fully customised vehicle.

The front seats provide optimum body support for the driver and front passenger and also feature multi-way electric adjustment. Options include sports seats with pronounced side sections, comfort seats with soft upholstery or climate-controlled comfort seats with integrated ventilation and massage function for the back muscles.

At the rear, individual seats with electric adjustment and also a massage function are optionally available. The long version of the A8 with its luxurious knee and legroom is therefore the ideal chauffeur-driven saloon.

MMI with unsurpassed ease of operation

The operating concept of the Multi Media Interface (MMI) in the Audi A8 was convincing from the very start and remains unsurpassed to date in terms of ease of operation, perfect location and consistent inherent logic. The fold-out 7-inch colour screen is located above the centre console in the optimum field of vision.

The control unit on the centre console, the MMI terminal, consists of the central rotary/pushbutton control button, four control keys and eight function keys. A variety of functions can be controlled effortlessly and intuitively, from the navigation unit to the audio and telephone system through to wide-ranging adjustment options on the vehicle.

Light and unshakable

As the top model, the A8 utilises the entire expertise that Audi has acquired in the body manufacturing sector. Since the debut of the previous generation in 1994, the brand with the four-ring badge has made consistent progress in the field of aluminium construction.

It all started with a revolutionary new approach – the Audi Space Frame ASF. This is a high-strength aluminium frame structure into which the large aluminium panels are integrated, thus assuming a supporting function. The space frame consists of a combination of aluminium extruded sections and castings that are positively connected to each other. Its central elements are the roof frame, side sills, seat cross members, roof posts and floor panels.

Innovative casting techniques and alloys are employed for the A8 model series. Large multifunctional castings, long continuous profiles and a high proportion of straight extruded sections reduce the number of components: a mere 29 castings account for 34 per cent of the structural weight. This significantly enhances comfort, since a low number of connections between components increases body rigidity. At the same time, the fact that there are fewer components has a positive effect on production processes and, consequently, on quality. The side panel, for example, consists of a single section which extends from the A-post to the rear end of the body.

Outstanding rigidity for dynamics and comfort

Apart from rivets, the connections are executed using various welding techniques i.e. MIG and laser welding and the laser-hybrid welding process. Laser welding allows large-area panels to be connected to the body structure particularly efficiently thanks to the fact that the resulting linear joins achieve superior strength and rigidity values to punctual ones. In all, around 20 metres of laser connecting seams will be found in the body of the Audi A8.

One of the two great strengths of the Audi Space Frame ASF is its outstanding rigidity. Its static torsional rigidity, a decisive factor for handling potential, is just as excellent as the so-called torsional eigen frequency which largely determines vibrational comfort. The ASF meets all current passive safety standards as well as plenty that have not yet come into force.

Low weight for low fuel consumption

Despite all these excellent qualities, the body structure weight of the Audi A8 is only about half as much as that of a conventional sheet-steel body. It amounts to around 215 kilograms – a figure that is customary for the mid-size class.

This weight-saving has two advantages: it improves handling characteristics and reduces fuel consumption. The new Audi A8 2.8 FSI is perfect proof of this: with a total weight of only 1690 kilograms its six-cylinder powerplant delivers superlative performance figures, while at the same time its fuel consumption of only 8.3 litres sets a new benchmark in the luxury class.

The high-strength structure of the A8 exhibits excellent safety characteristics. In a side-on collision, for example, the high-strength A-post braces itself against the other vehicle – this large casting is clear evidence of Audi’s superior expertise in the field of aluminium technology. In the interior, finely-tuned restraint systems work in conjunction with each other.

These include belt tensioners with belt force limiters and two-stage full-size airbags for driver and front passenger as well as side airbags integrated in the front and rear backrests and the sideguard large-area head airbag system for front and rear passengers.

Audi backguard active head restraints reduce the risk of whiplash. In the event of a rear-end collision the special shape of the seat restrains the upper body, the spring-loaded head restraints swing forward and support the head at an early stage. Belt tensioners, airbags and active head restraints are triggered by two impact sensors on the front, side and rear of the vehicle. Furthermore, in a crash of sufficient severity the hazard warning lights are activated and the engine switched off.

The lowest noise level in its class

Aerodynamics is a technical area in which Audi has played a leading role for many years. The drag coefficient of the A8 is only 0.27, for instance. Solutions such as underbody panelling facilitate high downforce on the axles for further enhanced directional stability. Intensive fine-tuning reduces turbulence, which also benefits aeroacoustics. Even at high speeds, the A8 is exceptionally quiet.

This is precisely where the fine-tuning of the new-generation Audi A8 delivers distinct improvements. The entire acoustics, for instance, have been revised and optimised with innovative materials – after all, noise insulation at Audi is always tackled from the point of view of intelligent light-weight construction. The result: without adding weight the Audi A8 exhibits the lowest rolling, road and ambient noise in its class – an important element for relaxed comfort in the saloon on long journeys.

The acoustics package also includes the underfloor panel for the body and engine encapsulation: this now has a three-layer structure. This new trilaminate consists of a cover fleece incorporating strategically placed absorption fleeces, a polypropylene film and a surface film. In addition, the wheel arches are fitted with a new lining: here too, new fibre fleece materials and textile surfaces ensure efficient sound insulation.

Optimised "acoustic" glass for the windscreen and side windows likewise offers improved insulation: here a special 0.8-millimetre-thick film made of polyvinyl butyral lies between two layers of safety glass, each of which is 2.1 millimetres thick.

Driving enjoyment in the luxury class

The character of the Audi A8 is a result of the synthesis of dynamic, light-footed driveability and exceptional ride and acoustic comfort. With its agility and steering precision the A8 has set new standards; in terms of handling it has the qualities of a sports car. Even long journeys provide enjoyment and relaxation at the same time.

To emphasise this unique character of the A8 even further, both strengths of the saloon have been enhanced. The rack-and-pinion steering with variable ratios and servotronic speed-dependent power assistance has been optimised and is more direct, similarly to the S8. Shock absorbers, bearings and air suspension settings have been updated. As a result, the new A8 responds more spontaneously to steering inputs, tackles winding country roads with precision and – as if on its own – maintains calm and supreme straight-line stability at high speeds.

Air suspension with an even more sensitive response

Similarly to the handling characteristics, ride comfort has also been improved: the standard adaptive air suspension is now more responsive to minor irregularities in the road surface. The continuously variable shock absorbers feature new seals to reduce friction, new valves optimise the characteristics, the entire hydraulics system has been retuned. The A8 even moves smoothly over transverse joints, with no vibration whatsoever. Together with the package designed to insulate the vehicle from rolling and road noise, the luxury saloon from Audi offers outstanding comfort.

The foundation for these excellent driving characteristics is provided by the Audi A8’s aluminium running gear, with five-link front suspension and self-tracking trapezoidal link rear suspension. The standard adaptive air suspension – featuring active continuously variable shock absorbers – solves the classic conflict between sporty handling and luxurious ride comfort. It offers four levels of ground clearance. On the motorway it lowers the body, thus improving stability and aerodynamic drag.

Suspension characteristics according to personal preferences

Furthermore, adaptive air suspension allows the driver to adjust the characteristics according to his/her own personal taste – with only one action in the "Car" menu of the MMI operating system. The following modes can be selected: automatic – with the emphasis on a balanced setup, dynamic – a particularly agile setting, comfort – with the focus on gentle cruising and finally lift for driving on very uneven terrain. In addition to the standard programme, adaptive air suspension sport is optionally available. It works with the same control modes as the standard suspension but has firmer characteristics overall.

All V6 and V8 models are fitted with 17-inch wheels; cast aluminium wheels with a 10-hole design are standard. The vast range of optional wheel designs and wheel sizes up to 20 inches has been further extended for the 2008 model year. In each case, high-performance disc brakes are located behind the wheels, held in place by aluminium floating callipers. A tyre pressure monitoring system is available on request; the electromechanical parking brake with starting assist and emergency braking function is standard.

Optionally available for the top Audi A8 W12 and Audi S8 models is the ceramic brake system. This combines utmost stability with a brake disc service life of up to 300,000 km.

Power, refinement and efficiency

Supreme power for superior road performance, spontaneous handling characteristics with exemplary efficiency – the engine range, too, lives up to the standards of the sportiest saloon in the luxury class. Three six-cylinder and two V8 powerplants, three FSI petrol units and two TDI diesel versions provide a variety of options – according to personal requirements and preferences. The high-end models are equipped with two top-class powerpacks – the Audi A8 W12 features the twelve-cylinder as the epitome of luxury driving and the Audi S8 the fascinating, high-revving V10.

At the other end of the engine range, the new 2.8 FSI demonstrates how well the Audi A8 combines travelling comfort with excellent efficiency and low fuel consumption. Thanks to this ultra-modern engine and the exemplarily low vehicle weight of only 1690 kilograms the standardised fuel consumption of the A8 2.8 FSI is a mere 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 199 grams per kilometre – the lowest figure in the luxury segment.

This level of efficiency does not entail any form of compromise. The V6 engine develops 154 kW / 210 bhp and produces its maximum torque of 280 Newton-metres across a wide engine speed range from 3,000 to 5,000 rpm. The favourable weight of the vehicle, made possible by the ASF aluminium construction, and low aerodynamic drag also affect the dynamics: with an acceleration time of only 8.0 seconds and a top speed of 238 km/h the A8 2.8 FSI undoubtedly delivers a supreme driving experience.

Advancement through efficient technology

The new six-cylinder engine demonstrates its Vorsprung durch Technik with FSI petrol direct injection and the innovative Audi valvelift system. The new technology has the purpose of controlling valve lift variably in two stages. The Audi valvelift system implements so-called cam pieces, located on the intake camshafts, which can be moved and controlled electronically.

They carry two cam contours, side by side, for small and large valve travel. The valves are opened according to load requirements and depending on the position of these cam pieces.

The advantage: the fresh mixture required can be controlled much more accurately via the valve opening; the throttle valve remains open longer and so-called throttle losses decrease. In conjunction with a number of additional measures to promote reduced friction at numerous components, the Audi valvelift system cuts fuel consumption by ten per cent.

FSI for optimum utilisation of energy

FSI technology is also featured on the two other petrol engines in the Audi A8: the powerful six-cylinder 3.2 FSI and the potent 4.2 FSI V8 use petrol direct injection and the optimum combustion this affords for remarkably impressive pulling power from all engine speeds along with maximum utilisation of the energy in the fuel.

In terms of design, like all six and eight-cylinder units in the A8, they belong to the current family of V engines with a 90-degree angle, which – with a cylinder spacing of 90 millimetres – is remarkable for its compact dimensions and low weight. The 3.2-litre V6, for instance, is a mere 360 millimetres in length and weighs 169.5 kilograms.

The 3.2 FSI develops 191 kW / 260 bhp, its maximum torque of 330 Nm being available at 3,250 rpm. However, more than 90 per cent of this maximum torque is provided over a wide range between 2,400 and 5,500 rpm – a unique feature for naturally-aspirated V6 engines. Acceleration time is 7.7 seconds, top speed is 250 km/h and standardised fuel consumption is 9.9 litres.

V8 with superior performance

Even at the dawn of the automotive industry, eight-cylinder engines were highlights in the Audi range. The Audi Type R of 1928, for example, housed a 4.9-litre eight-cylinder inline engine under its long bonnet. The inline layout has not been maintained for some time, of course. Today, the modern V engines from Audi, even those with eight cylinders, are extremely compact and feature cutting-edge technology: the cylinder housing is cast from an aluminium-silicon alloy; the pistons and rings glide in the liners on hard silicon crystals. The V8 draws its intake air through a two-stage variable intake manifold made of magnesium.

Delivering 257 kW / 350 bhp at 6,800 rpm, the 4.2 FSI has impressive perfor-mance potential; its maximum torque of 440 Nm guarantees superlative pulling power – especially since 85 per cent of it is available from as low as 2,000 rpm. For the sprint to 100 km/h the Audi A8 4.2 FSI requires a mere 6.1 seconds; the governed top speed of 250 km/h is quickly reached. Standardised consumption of the V8 is 10.9 litres.

TDI units with muscular pulling power

The two TDI engines in the A8 range are fascinating in their own particular way – with mighty pulling power and impressive performance together with fuel economy. Six and eight-cylinder versions operate with common rail injection systems and particularly fast-acting piezo injectors. These are able to precisely distribute minimum amounts of fuel to the combustion chambers within milliseconds. This means that the number of injection processes per cycle can be varied and optimised virtually at will, resulting in optimum combustion control.

This strategy efficiently reduces emissions and ensures smoother engine operation. In this area the 3.0 TDI and 4.2 TDI are undoubtedly among the best diesel engines in the world. Audi, the inventor of the TDI, is continuously extending its Vorsprung durch Technik.

Even the A8 3.0 TDI achieves powerful performance figures with its six-cylinder engine. Thanks to an output of 171 kW / 233 bhp, it reaches the 100 km/h mark from a standstill in only 7.8 seconds, its top speed being 243 km/h. Its maximum torque of 450 Newton-metres, which this engine delivers from 1,750 rpm, is naturally even more impressive. The standardised consumption of the 3.0 TDI is 8.5 litres per 100 kilometres.

4.2 TDI with the dynamics of a top athlete

The current king of the TDI range from Audi is the V8. With a mighty output of 240 kW / 326 bhp and enormous torque of 650 Newton-metres from as low as 1,600 rpm, the Audi A8 4.2 TDI offers the dynamic performance of a professional athlete. The saloon sprints in just 5.9 seconds to a speed of 100 km/h; its top speed is governed at 250 km/h. When compared with the performance potential it offers, its standardised consumption of just 9.4 litres is extremely modest.

In line with the lightweight construction concept of the Audi A8, the 4.2 TDI is one of the lightest diesel V8s ever: the entire engine weighs only 255 kilograms. In addition, its very short overall length of only 520 millimetres improves weight distribution in the vehicle. Both qualities are of prime importance for the handling characteristics of the Audi A8.

The V8 TDI owes its spontaneous response and excellent torque development to the two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry – the maximum speed of the turbine wheels is over 210,000 rpm, incidentally. Both intercoolers are positioned below the front headlights for optimum air flow. Mixture preparation is performed by a latest-generation common rail system: here, too, piezo inline injectors are employed.

quattro drive offers reserves for every situation

The quattro permanent four-wheel drive on the Audi A8 provides the assurance that this enormous power will be transmitted to the road without any losses. Particularly with respect to the torque delivered by the TDI engines or the V8 FSI, the drive system provides the necessary reserves of traction and safety across all four wheels, in all driving situations and on all road surface conditions. It ensures excellent grip and directional stability and guarantees maximum driving enjoyment with a high level of active safety. The centre differential automatically undertakes dynamic torque distribution, adapting it to the prevailing situation within milliseconds. If a high level of wheel spin is detected, the quattro drive is assisted by the electronic differential lock (EDL). If necessary, propulsive power can be concentrated on one wheel.

Superior driving comfort and almost imperceptible gear shifts are provided on quattro models by the six-speed tiptronic with the dynamic shift programme. In addition, the gears can also be changed manually via the gearshift lever or by means of optionally available paddles behind the steering wheel.

In combination with front-wheel drive, the continuously variable automatic transmission multitronic is used on the 2.8 FSI and 3.2 FSI models. With its completely jolt-free acceleration it not only offers unprecedented driving comfort – with its wide overall ratio it permits a very economical driving style, while still retaining its athletic qualities with the seven fixed transmission stages in manual mode. The 3.2 FSI is optionally available with front-wheel drive or quattro drive; the 2.8 FSI features front-wheel drive.

Support to enhance comfort and safety

The Audi A8 supports the driver with state-of-the art assistance systems. They provide comfort and help to maintain fitness on long journeys – thus making a vital contribution towards safety.

The intelligent, radar-based adaptive cruise control, for instance, automatically controls the speed in relation to the preset distance from the vehicle in front. This noticeably reduces the driver's workload particularly during long journeys on country roads or when driving on the motorway, especially in heavy nose-to-tail traffic.

The new Audi side assist in the A8 also employs intelligent radar technology. The system was specifically designed to support lane-changing manoeuvres and it alerts the driver to hazardous situations. Two radar sensors in the rear bumper, which operate on the 24-gigahertz frequency, monitor the space next to and behind the Audi A8, up to a distance of 50 metres, to draw the driver’s attention to any approaching vehicles. A high-performance computer evaluates and interprets the raw data.

Hazard warning for the driver

If another vehicle approaches fast from behind or is moving in the critical area at about the same speed, yellow LEDs in the housing of the left or right exterior mirror comes on permanently. So as not to cause any distraction, the display is designed to be "unobtrusive": the driver sees it only when looking directly in the mirror; as long as he/she looks ahead, it is not noticeable.

If, despite this illuminated warning signal, the A8 driver sets the indicator to change lanes, the LEDs become brighter and flash rapidly for about a second. The flash is almost impossible to overlook as the human eye is extremely sensitive to changes in contrast in the peripheral field of vision.

Audi has analysed eye response and the effects of the display in every detail in extensive series of tests with drivers of various builds and ages.

In addition, the optics on the inside of the mirror housing are directed in such an elaborate way that the display can be seen by the driver. For licensing reasons, it must not be visible to vehicles following behind. The brightness of the display automatically adapts to the ambient light: it adjusts to a moonless night equally as well as to bright midday sunshine; it can also be controlled via the MMI operating system. The system can be activated from a speed of 60 km/h.

Camera monitors traffic lanes

Yet another high-tech assistance system is now available in the Audi A8 – Audi lane assist. This system alerts the driver, from a speed of 65 km/h, if he or she inadvertently moves out of the lane. A small camera, positioned above the rear-view mirror on the windscreen, monitors the road in front of the vehicle; its optical system is designed for a range of 60 m and an aperture angle of about 40 degrees. A high-performance computer, accommodated in the same housing, detects the lane markings and places the vehicle in relation to those markings.

If the driver moves on to one of these lines without indicating, Audi lane assist warns him/her by causing the steering wheel to vibrate; the intensity of this can be set at three different stages via the MMI. The point at which the warning is issued can also be adjusted to one of three levels. The impulse can be triggered even before the wheel touches the line, only when crossing the line or even according to the system’s own flexible assessment – this adaptive mode takes the particular road conditions into account.

Audi lane assist can be deactivated. A display in the instrument panel indicates when it is activated but not able to issue a warning – because the lane markings cannot be detected, for instance, or because the road speed is too low.

With Audi parking system advanced, even narrow multi-storey car parks are easy to negotiate. This parking assistant helps not only by issuing an acoustic signal for distances at the front and rear. In addition, a small camera, discreetly integrated in the handle of the luggage compartment lid, delivers clear and bright wide-angle images of the area behind the vehicle. They are displayed on the MMI screen; projection and reference lines provide support when reversing into a parking space.

Integrated driving dynamics package

As an integrated driving dynamics - assistance system, the ESP in the Audi A8 comprises the anti-lock brake system, hydraulic brake assist, electronic differential lock, traction control and of course yawing moment control – the actual ESP. The ESP uses this to reduce the vehicle’s tendency to skid when close to the handling limits.

Statistics have long established the high effectiveness of electronic stabilisation in preventing accidents and mitigating the consequences of accidents. In particular situations, however, the assistance functions can be switched off in two stages. At the first stage, only traction control is deactivated. This allows wheelspin, which may be advantageous, for instance, when driving with snow chains. The second stage, the complete deactivation of ESP, can be used by the expert driver if he/she wishes to use the full dynamic potential of the Audi A8 on a suitable stretch of road.

A treat for the eyes and ears

The Audi A8 has always been a leader with its simple and logical Multi Media Interface operating system. The 7-inch folding screen and the MMI terminal on the centre console are a delight to use, the simple menu structure continues to be the benchmark for clarity of design and straightforward user guidance. The MMI is also the centre point of the diverse range of multimedia and communication systems in the A8.

The standard audio system is of a high quality: the radio features a double tuner and the phase diversity reception concept, whereby digitised signals from two aerials are permanently evaluated and combined into a strong, interference-free reception signal. This maintains a high-quality signal even in adverse conditions. Nine speakers, a five-channel amplifier, a vehicle-specific equaliser and a total output of 230 watts create a mobile soundscape.

The infotainment range in the Audi A8 can be perfectly matched to suit individual requirements. Its modules include various sound systems through to unprecedented high-end systems, DAB digital radio reception, a CD changer, a TV receiver for analogue and digital signals and Rear Seat Entertainment. This includes a 6 DVD changer and two monitors in the head restraints of the front seats.

Digital-quality radio sound

The optional DAB tuner offers radio reception with unprecedented quality. Digital radio is far superior to even the best analogue FM receivers in terms of dynamic range, transparency and spatiality. The high-quality systems in the Audi A8 are particularly effective in bringing out the digital sound quality. Digital audio broadcast (DAB) is already widely used in many European countries. In Germany, the UK and Belgium, for instance, almost full coverage has been achieved.

Should any gap appear in the DAB network, however, the audio system switches instantly to the relevant FM stations.

Direct iPod connection

For many, a constantly available, portable music collection has become a fixed part of their lifestyle. Using the Audi music interface you can connect up an Apple iPod to the A8’s audio system and control it via the MMI operating system with the same intuitive logic that iPod users know and value. But many other MP3 players with a USB interface can also be used to play music via the Audi sound system.

An Audi A8 naturally always knows its way around – certainly when it comes to the DVD navigation system and its various detailed display options on the 7-inch colour screen. If desired, this screen will also display TV programmes – albeit only when the vehicle is stationary for safety reasons, but from analogue as well as digital channels (DVB-T).

The Bose Surround Sound system ensures that electronic signals are impressively converted into sound waves. Twelve speakers, an 8-channel amplifier and an amplifier output of 370 watts provide compelling spatial sound quality.

Perfect sound experience

Music in the Audi A8 becomes the ultimate sound experience with the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System. The standards of development for this top-class system from the Danish high-end manufacturers were extremely high: a sufficient dynamic range has to be available from pianissimo through to fortissimo possibile; an orchestra must come across as one sound entity, yet the individual instruments must still be clearly placeable. The Bang & Olufsen Sound System achieves all of this with unprecedented precision and quality.

The amount of technical equipment is correspondingly high: a total of 14 speakers with a diameter of up to 270 millimetres are distributed at optimum locations in the interior, each with its own output stage. The centre speaker and the acoustic lenses on the instrument panel ensure authentic sound reproduction at every seat. The doors are filled with mid-range speakers and woofers; the rear shelf accommodates two surround sound speakers and the powerful subwoofer. The digital sound processor delivers surround sound, has dynamic vehicle noise compensation and can be adjusted to the listener’s preferences via the MMI operating system. Total system output: more than 1,000 watts.

The Advanced Sound System also appeals to the eye, living up to the design standards of both Audi and Bang & Olufsen: The cover of each individual speaker is made of aluminium. When the system is switched on, the two acoustic lenses rise smoothly from the upper section of the cockpit.

The ideal car phone

Safe and easy use of the phone has become one of the most important requirements for motorists – not only for those who spend a great amount of time on the roads for work-related reasons. Combining the advantages of a hands-free mobile phone system with the strengths of a classic built-in phone, the Audi Bluetooth car phone offers the best possible solution. That makes phoning on the move convenient, more flexible and simpler than ever.

This innovative telephone solution is extremely convenient as the mobile can simply remain in the driver’s jacket pocket. After registering just once, the vehicle’s system can automatically access the functions of the mobile phone as soon as the driver gets in. The only condition is that the mobile must support the so-called SIM access profile. This allows the car phone to retrieve the data of your mobile phone’s SIM card, your own telephone number and personal phone book. The mobile phone’s telephone module is then switched off, which also prevents radiation in the vehicle interior. The car phone uses the vehicle aerial for an optimum reception at all times.

Simple operation via MMI and speech control

The Audi Bluetooth car phone is operated via the easy-to-use speech control system, the MMI operating system or the multifunction steering wheel. The latest digital voice processor, especially adapted for the vehicle, largely suppresses interference from echoes or vehicle noise to deliver excellent hands-free voice quality. For discrete phone use, a cordless operating handset can also be added to the system.

For business purposes, the Multifunctional Communication Unit is available for the rear. Here a complete office is accommodated beneath the centre armrest: this device not only offers a telephone and internet connection – it can also fax, scan and photocopy documents.

The way to aesthetic perfection

With the exceptional design and excellent craftsmanship of the Audi A8, the next step is almost a matter of course – customisation entirely according to the future owner’s wishes. Aesthetic perfection is obtained when the new Audi precisely reflects individual desires and wishes in terms of equipment, colours, materials and inlays.

The Audi A8 offers a range of design options as standard that is extraordinary even in the luxury segment. The wide choice of paint finishes and interior colours, inlays in the most diverse woods and colours, seats in cloth, Alcantara, Valcona leather, Natural leather or Satin Nappa leather give every A8 the look of a perfectly tailored suit.

A true one-off from quattro GmbH

The A8 becomes a true one-off with the Audi exclusive programme from quattro GmbH. Its remit being to fulfil requests for particularly exquisite features, it offers a virtually unlimited range of options, from which the customer can create the perfect automobile according to his/her personal taste and style. These requests are then turned into reality by hand and with the utmost skill.

The paint finish sends out the most striking signal, of course. Audi exclusive offers seven customised paint finishes: Morning Dew, metallic, for example, or Velvet Purple, pearl effect. However, between black and white there lies a limitless variety of colour options, nuances and shades. Virtually all of them can be realised as a one-off by quattro GmbH – always on condition that the high quality standards in terms of material and durability can be met.

Creativity and finest quality

Audi exclusive not only stands for creativity and making individual dreams come true, but also for exclusively selected materials, meticulous craftsmanship and great attention to detail. The various types of leather have been chosen for their breathability, durability, sumptuousness and feel and are ideal for use in automobiles. Audi exclusive leather is remarkably breathable and has a high level of water vapour permeability, which is very important for seating comfort. With regard to leather colour options, the Audi exclusive programme offers a comprehensive selection which the customer can combine at will. Whether harmoniously coordinated tones are preferred or a subtle contrast – beauty as always is in the eye of the beholder.

The woods featured in the Audi exclusive programme are root burls and trunks from trees grown in sustainable forests. They are cut, stored and then softened in hot steam for up to 100 hours. These later become delicate sheets of wood, which in 40 operations – pressing, sanding, staining, varnishing and polishing to name but a few – are transformed into the exclusive inlays featured in the Audi customisation programme.

The Audi exclusive range also includes a coolbox with bar compartment in the rear seat back and a folding table on the back of the front passenger seat, which can be operated manually or electrically. Even a fold-out leg rest is available for the front passenger seat.

In addition, the A8 offers state-of-the-art communications technology as an option. At the rear of the luxury saloon, there is not only a charging cradle for the car phone handset but also the multifunctional communication unit with fax, scanning, printing and telephone function. The system also features standardised interfaces for laptops and PDA systems.

If desired, the A8 comes with Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE). The system consists of two independently controlled monitors in the head restraints of the front seats and can be operated via the MMI Multi Media Interface.

TV programmes as well as DVDs from the on-board system can be watched on the monitors. Sound output is via the vehicle’s own speakers or via headsets, as preferred.

Virtually every wish granted

In line with Audi’s claim in the luxury class, even the standard equipment on the A8 is very extensive. In addition to the audio system and adaptive air suspension it also includes an anti-theft alarm, for instance, cruise control, deluxe automatic air conditioning with air quality sensor, electrically adjustable seats and xenon plus headlights.

Particularly in the luxury class, individuality is one of the most important criteria when choosing a vehicle. The Audi A8 offers the customer a vast wealth options to customise its design and technical features.

Individual climate control and gentle massage

For example, seats with climate control and massage function are available for the front and rear. Xenon plus with adaptive light, incorporating dynamic cornering light and static turning light, provides optimum road illumination at night, in city traffic or on the motorway. The four-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning allows passengers at the rear, too, to select their required temperature and air distribution settings individually for their seat.

A8 drivers rarely have to use their car key in the conventional way: "advanced key" is an optional system that functions as an electronic access and authorisation system.

The key – which can remain in the driver's pocket – incorporates an electronic pulse generator whose signal is registered and checked by a sensor in the door. If the signal is accepted, the doors are unlocked as soon as the driver operates the button on the door handle.

The central locking can be activated and deactivated at any door of the vehicle. All the driver has to do is carry the key on his or her person within a range of about 1.5 metres from the car and actuate the door handle. The passenger can also be the first to open the door if necessary. It is possible to select via MMI whether the central locking should only release the manually actuated doors or unlock all of them.

New style package Sport

The Audi A8 is the sportiest saloon car in the luxury class. The new style package Sport enhances its dynamic character in terms of design and driving feel even further. This extremely high-quality package contains a number of exclusive elements such as xenon plus headlights with adaptive light and LED daytime running lights, normally the preserve of the top W12 and S8 models. Also adopted from the S8, the sporty top model: the luggage compartment lid with integrated spoiler and the additional external colour, Daytona Grey, pearl effect. The Audi A8 with style package Sport runs on 19-inch wheels with a 5-spoke design; adaptive air suspension sport ensures firmer handling.

The heated sports seats in two-tone Valcona leather, the inlays in Vavona wood assam grey with fine aluminium strips and the black headlining create an exclusive ambience in the passenger compartment. The extended aluminium package provides interior highlights. The 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel, equipped with paddles, is finished in perforated leather and is only available as part of the Sport package.

The twelve-cylinder, the epitome of automotive grandeur: particularly in the premium segment of first-class saloons, the Audi A8 demonstrates its uniqueness as a top athlete and luxury saloon rolled into one. It achieves this in two ways: the A8 W12 represents the dynamic saloon for the ambitious driver, and the long-wheelbase version is a supreme chauffeur-driven car with opulent comfort and convenience equipment.

The Audi A8 W12 fuses the performance of a powerful sports car with an ambience of luxury and sportiness. Subtle differences in detail distinguish it visually from the six and eight-cylinder versions – never obtrusive, but instantly recognisable by the automotive connoissseur. For instance, the highly polished black single-frame grille features vertical double chrome applications. At the rear, trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes integrated in the bumper identify the top model in the Audi A8 model line.

The LED daytime running lights at the front of the Audi A8 W12 provide a distinctive accent. Located in a cloverleaf-shaped reflector and each comprising five white light-emitting diodes, the daytime running lights consume a minimum, barely perceptible, amount of energy. Each diode has an output of just one watt – conventional dipped headlights have an output of up to 300 watts. This white colour of this light, which is similar to daylight, not only illuminates the road ahead, it also makes the driver’s own car immediately visible to all other road users.

One of the quietest saloons in the world

Furthermore, the A8 W12 benefits from the consistent development of the model range, subtle modifications to the timeless design and the extended range of colours and equipment.

With the innovative soundproofing package to insulate the vehicle from road, rolling and ambient noise and the standard, new kind of insulating glass, the A8 W12 is further strengthening its position as the quietest saloon in the world. Moreover, with its more direct steering and retuned suspension it is proof of how successful the synthesis of fascinating agility and superlative ride comfort can be.

Under the engine compartment lid is a powerplant that is unparalleled in modern-day engine construction. The W-shaped twelve-cylinder unit offers an inestimable advantage: despite the larger number of cylinder units and despite a substantially higher displacement the W12 is as compact as a V-eight-cylinder engine and considerably smaller than a conventional V-shaped 12-cylinder powerplant.

Thanks to its unusually short length of 513 millimetres together with a width of 690 millimetres, this engine can be paired with quattro four-wheel drive. Significant competitor models with twelve-cylinder units installed at the front can merely drive both rear wheels – in this case there is not enough space under the bonnet for additional front-wheel drive components.

High performance and low weight

A further advantage of this compact design and the materials used – aluminium and magnesium – is the very low weight of the twelve-cylinder unit. This in turn contributes towards the low total vehicle weight of 1960 kilograms – an achievement unrivalled by competitors. One horsepower on the Audi A8 W12 quattro has to accelerate just 4.35 kilograms – a figure that is on a par with a high-performance sports car.

With a maximum output of 331 kW / 450 bhp the engine delivers excellent torque: a remarkable 560 Newton-metres at least is always on tap between 2,300 and 5,300 rpm. The powerpack has an impressively direct response and spontaneously translates the slightest movement of the throttle into acceleration.

The long-wheelbase version of the A8 W12 sprints from zero to 100 in only 5.2 seconds; the governed top speed of 250 km/h is a mere formality. In this context the standardised consumption of 13.9 litres is relatively modest.

Discreet but highly sporty sound

The special fascination of a successful twelve-cylinder engine is largely due to its characteristic sound. This means that nothing can be heard initially – extremely low-vibration idling at the most, free from low-frequency vibration. For full-load acceleration, however, Audi’s acoustics engineers have composed a highly sporty sound pattern for the engine – powerful, but never loud, of course. This unmistakable sound design is a further example of the overall character of the twelve-cylinder Audi A8 – emotional and dynamic but with maximum acoustic quality.

The counterpart to the potent engine, as it were, is the high-performance brake system on the Audi A8 W12, with its generous proportions and double-piston brake callipers at the front. Yet this, too, can be enhanced: as an option on the top model, Audi offers brake discs made of carbon-fibre-reinforced ceramic. They are lighter and more durable than steel discs but, most importantly, are absolutely fade-resistant, even under extreme loads.

The ratios of the six-speed tiptronic with dynamic shift programme DSP and additional Sport programme have been adapted to the sporty character of the A8 W12 quattro. Thanks to the six-speed concept, the engine's output and torque are always unleashed with such precision that spontaneous sprints are accomplished effortlessly in any speed range.

Sporty self-drive model, comfortable chauffeur-driven car

This is where the differentiation between the standard and long-wheelbase versions begins: with the self-drive sports saloon the final drive ratio is lower and the response more spontaneous than on the chauffeur-driven model. In addition, the suspension settings and front seats are different:

The A8 W12 quattro is equipped with adaptive air suspension sport, whereas the long-wheelbase version of the W12 features the standard suspension with more emphasis on comfort. The driver of the A8 W12 enjoys the good lateral support of the sports seats, whereas the comfort seats in the long-wheelbase version appeal on account of their particularly soft upholstery.

The difference is even greater when it comes to equipment. Beyond the luxurious level of the A8, standard items include Bose Surround Sound, for example, noise-reducing insulating glass, extended leather trim and the navigation system. On the twelve-cylinder A8L the standard package also incorporates the Bluetooth car telephone with cordless handset, Audi parking system advanced with rear-view camera and four-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning.

The Audi S8 is the supreme athlete in the luxury class: With its combination of ten-cylinder FSI power, permanent – and here particularly sporty – quattro four-wheel drive and Audi Space Frame, the Audi S8 occupies a unique position within its competitive field of high-performance saloons. The outstanding potential of the ten-cylinder powerpack finds its counterpart in the dynamically tuned sports suspension, high-performance brake system and sporty yet elegant design.

Sports appeal is firmly anchored in the genetic code of the Audi brand. In the case of the S models, however, sportiness is a declared principle, combined with comfort, aesthetics, elegance and uncompromising quality. The Audi S8 with its 5.2-litre V10 FSI engine combines all of these strengths to produce passion and superiority. The V10 of undersquare configuration utilises the expertise of the Lamborghini Gallardo super sports car, but has been reengineered in essential areas.

A ten-cylinder engine is the ideal design for realising sporting aspirations. Although an eight-cylinder engine would be even more compact, to make it into the five-litre class it would need large, heavy pistons and connecting rods, so its ability to rev freely would be impaired as a result. It is no coincidence that competitors have generally concentrated simply on high torque with their large-capacity V8 engines, rather than attempting to squeeze sporty performance out of them too.

Spontaneous response

The other advantages of the high-speed V10 design are quite clear: the engine fascinates with its spontaneous response and short reaction times. It produces a throaty sound when accelerating and yet has a beefy torque curve even at low speeds. All in all it forms the perfect synthesis of sporty driving enjoyment and comfort on long journeys.

The 331 kW / 450 bhp V10 in the Audi S8 also belongs to the new generation of V engines from Audi, all of which feature a standard 90-degree included angle and a spacing of 90 millimetres between cylinder centres. The crankcase of the Audi ten-cylinder powerpack is made from a hyper-eutectic aluminium alloy. This technology renders separate cylinder liners superfluous; the liners are instead honed directly from the material by exposing the hard silicon crystals. The connecting rods are made from forged steel, and the pistons from an aluminium alloy. At the rated engine speed, each of them covers an average of 21.7 metres per second.

Performance and pulling power

The V10 in the Audi S8 uses FSI petrol direct injection. This has impressively demonstrated its dynamic potential in motor sport – the R8 racing car featuring this technology represented Audi five times at the 24-hour Le Mans race and captured four victories. The common rail injection system delivers the fuel directly to the combustion chambers in precisely metered amounts, at a pressure of up to 100 bar.

The powerful ten-cylinder engine has been optimised for high torque as well as high engine power. From as low as 3,000 to 4,000 rpm it delivers 540 Nm to the crankshaft. More than 90 per cent of the torque is available at 2,300 rpm. The V10 imparts the luxury saloon with the road performance of a high-calibre sports car. The Audi S8 sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. Only a short while later it reaches its governed top speed of 250 km/h, also facilitated by its low drag coefficient.

The engine is content with 13.4 litres of Super Plus fuel per 100 kilometres – this is also thanks to its consistent lightweight design concept, which clearly sets apart the A8 model range from its competitors. With its innovative aluminium body, the Audi Space Frame ASF, the S8 weighs a mere 1,940 kilograms, including the dynamic and sure-footed new-generation quattro drive, which boasts asymmetric/dynamic torque distribution.

Running gear underlines dynamic character

The centre differential distributes 40 per cent of the torque to the front and 60 per cent to the rear – this slightly rear-biased split underlines the dynamic character of the Audi S8. The new S8 is equipped with a six-speed tiptronic transmission as standard. In keeping with the character of this sporty top-of-the-line model, the final ratio of the automatic transmission is lower than on the A8 – the saloon is still capable of forceful acceleration even in sixth gear.

With regard to the running gear, the S8 relies on adaptive air suspension sport, the optional sports suspension for the A8. On the S8, however, the characteristics of the air springs and the shock absorbers integrated into the air spring bellows are somewhat firmer. With a further reduction in rolling and pitching movements, the sporty top model behaves with even greater agility and manoeuvrability, but is as stable and safe as ever. The elastokinematics of the rubber mounts in the axles have likewise been modified in keeping with the character of the S8.

The Audi S8 leaves the factory with newly developed cast aluminium wheels with a parallel-spoke S design. Their dimension is 9 J x 20, the wide tyres are size 265/35 R20. An 18-inch brake system assures a superlative braking performance. It features four large-size ventilated brake discs.

Ceramic brakes with tremendous potential

The optional ceramic brakes, which are also available for the twelve-cylinder A8, are a special feature for the S8. The impressive diameters of the ceramic brake discs – 380 mm at the front and 356 mm at the rear – are an immediate indication of their tremendous potential. The discs are made from a composite material comprising high-strength carbon fibres embedded in hard, frictionally resistant silicon carbide, a material that has already proven itself in the aerospace industry. The discs are bolted to a stainless steel chamber via resilient connecting elements.

The ceramic discs offer significant advantages compared with conventional steel discs. They offer a high braking performance, especially at the limit, and are largely unsusceptible to heat fading – a major safety bonus for a sporty high-performance car such as the Audi S8. The high-tech material is completely resistant to corrosion. Ceramic discs will last for up to 300,000 kilometres, four times as long as steel discs. And not only that, at around five kilograms per unit, they weigh half as much as their steel counterparts – this reduction in unsprung masses improves both handling and ride comfort.

Optically, the high-tech brake system can be identified by the special cooling ducts and the perforation of the discs as well as by anthracite-coloured callipers with the "Audi ceramic" logo. A six-piston aluminium monobloc calliper is used at the front wheels, a nodular cast iron floating calliper at the rear. The dynamic stability system ESP is specially tuned for interaction with the ceramic brake system.

The Audi S models have always epitomised high performance and refined sports appeal. The same applies to the S8 – it lends the design of the A8 a dynamic edge. This prestigious saloon is already inherently light and elegant in character – its aesthetic appeal reflects its exceptional position as a sports model in the luxury class. The S8 cuts a supremely athletic figure, but never looks aggressive. The most striking changes are to be found at its front end. The eye-catching single-frame grille bearing the S8 badge is in platinum grey, and its double vertical struts have a chrome-look finish.

An ambience of luxurious sportiness

Besides the 20-inch wheels with the new S design and the special brakes, four details on the side sections indicate the potential of the V10 engine: badges on the wings and the front brake callipers, door handles with aluminium trim strips and aluminium-look exterior mirror housings. At the rear, the S8 badge, an integrated rear spoiler, a subtle light-refracting edge in the apron and an exhaust system with four oval tailpipes complete the range of optical modifications.

The S8 also adds various specific accents to the luxurious interior. The S8 sports seats, which have a wide range of adjustment features, have two-colour upholstery with stitching in a contrasting colour. The colour combinations underscore the ambience of luxurious sportiness. Further details of the interior distinguish the sporty top model from the A8. The highly-polished door sill trims bear S8 badges, the inlays on the door and centre console are made of brushed aluminium or carbon fibre. The three-spoke multifunction steering wheel features colour-contrasting stitching and aluminium-look paddles as well as an S8 badge.

The innovative lighting technology known as adaptive light, including LED daytime running lights, is standard equipment on every Audi S8. Here the xenon plus headlights are coupled with static turning light and dynamic cornering light as well as separate LED daytime running lights – as on the A8 W12. As well as adaptive light technology, 20-inch wheels and an 18-inch brake system, the standard specification incorporates other comfort and convenience equipment items. These include new, noise-insulating double glazing for the windows, a DVD navigation system and Bose Surround audio system with CD changer. The door armrests and the centre console in the S8 are upholstered in leather, together with the seats.

The standard access and authorisation system known as advanced key permits the driver to open the S8 without having to take hold of the key. The driver can then switch on the ten-cylinder powerplant by pressing the Start button and immediately enjoy its inimitable sound.

The new Audi A8L W12 quattro Security offers mobility at an exclusive level allied to high levels of security against outside attack. The armour-plated luxury saloon impressively combines sportiness and comfort. The quattro permanent four-wheel drive is unique in the security vehicle segment, and provides superior driving dynamics particularly in hazardous situations.

Compared with its predecessor, the Audi A8 Security offers its occupants enhanced security against attack. A key factor in achieving this is the car’s discreet appearance. Despite having a fully armour-plated occupant cell made of steel, glass and aramide, to look at it can barely be distinguished from the standard production A8 model. Moreover, the use of special steel permits a high degree of precision in manufacture of the armour-plating elements. As a result, there is practically no impairment of the interior comfort zone.

The complex production process at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm enables all the individual components to be perfectly attuned to each other. As a result, Audi is able to offer unmatched levels of security.

Armour-plating

The armour-plating offers ballistic protection against hard-core bullets up to 7.62 millimetre calibre. Tests with hand grenades and explosives have also proved that the floor plating is able to withstand blasts from below. Other tests have evidenced the high strength of the roof and side panels of the new A8L W12 quattro Security. The bullet-proofing of the new Audi A8 Security has been independently assessed by the German Federal Criminal Police Office (the Bundeskriminalamt). The car is certified to the highest bullet-proofing classes VR6/VR7.

Drivetrain and chassis

The Audi A8L W12 quattro Security is powered by the high-performance twelve-cylinder engine. A power output of 331 kW (450 bhp), six-litre engine capacity and 580 Newtonmetres of torque deliver impressive propulsion despite the weight of the armour-plating. The transmission ratio of the tiptronic six-speed automatic transmission with the dynamic shift program (DSP) is specially tailored to the needs of the model, as is the brake system. The electronically controlled adaptive air suspension system is likewise specially adapted to cope with the vehicle’s additional weight, and delivers outstanding driving dynamics and high levels of comfort. The system also enables the driver to choose from three different setups, ranging from sport to high comfort.

In order to deliver optimum handling, the Security model’s electronic stabilisation program ESP assists the driving dynamics by automatically braking within a controllable range if the car deviates from the desired steering direction. The quattro permanent four-wheel drive system ensures that optimum grip is maintained in all road and weather conditions. This means the full engine power can be transferred to the road for longer without the electronic control systems having to intervene. The new A8 Security thus offers a standard of driving dynamics which can be crucial in dangerous situations or when escape is necessary.

Cockpit

The cockpit of the Audi A8 Security is clearly laid-out, enabling the driver to see all the key instrumentation quickly and easily. The Multi Media Interface MMI allows the driver to control the key vehicle functions centrally from a console. An intercom system permits communication between the occupants and people outside the vehicle without having to open the windows. The windows can be almost fully lowered if so required – an unusual benefit on an armour-plated vehicle.

Safety equipment

The Audi A8 Security is available optionally with an emergency exit system, preventing the interior from becoming a trap for the occupants in an emergency situation. If the doors can no longer be opened normally, an Audi-patented pyrotechnic system simply blows apart the joins between the doors and the vehicle body. No other manufacturer of armour-plated vehicles offers a system of this kind.

The new Audi A8 Security features an optional fire extinguisher system, with spray jets located in the engine compartment, on the underbody and in the wheel arches. The extinguisher system is activated by temperature sensors or manually by way of a button in the centre console. The passenger compartment features a smoke extractor to provide additional ventilation.

The tyres are fitted with electronic pressure monitors and the PAX run-flat system. This allows the car to be driven on for up to 60 kilometres at a top speed of 80 km/h, even if a tyre has suffered a complete loss of pressure.

Optional LED flashers in the exterior mirrors and a quick and easy-to-fit beacon light draw attention to the Audi A8L W12 quattro Security as and when needed.

Passenger compartment

The new Audi A8 Security offers protection allied to mobility at an exclusive level: a fax, telephone, video and display monitors turn the saloon’s interior into a fully-featured mobile office. The centre console houses the Audi Bluetooth car telephone with cordless handset as well as the mobile phone fitting. The fax machine is located underneath the rear armrest, making it easy to access without disturbing the elegance of the vehicle’s interior.

These features are complemented by a range of deluxe extras such as a coolbox with bar compartment and a DVD player. The high-performance coolbox is located behind the rear armrest, and offers space for two one-litre bottles and two glasses. Requests for custom features to personalise each vehicle can also be accommodated, of course.

Driver training

Only a professionally trained driver is capable of controlling a vehicle in extreme situations. In view of this, Audi offers buyers of its armour-plated models the facility to dispatch two drivers on a special training course. "Driving schools teach you to drive the car, but not to control it. Our training course actively provokes critical driving situations to enable drivers to learn how to handle them," says Freddy Kottulinsky, head of Audi Security Training. The training is oriented to the highest security demands, and teaches drivers to maintain full control of their vehicle in extreme situations. The driving skills taught are of the highest standard. Allied to the technical features of the new Audi A8 Security, this ensures high levels of mobile security.

History

The Audi A8L W12 quattro Security is already the fifth-generation of luxury armour-plated saloons from Audi. It represents the highpoint of a tradition stretching as far back as 1928, to the Horch 8 type 375. Weapons testing of security vehicles has been carried out ever since that time. Heads of state, government ministers and top business executives have been travelling in Audi security-enhanced saloons since 1980 – initially in the Audi 100, and since 1994 in the Audi A8.
