Overview
The new smart fortwo is the consistent evolution of a car that is unrivalled in terms of shape, use and nature. Launched on the market in 1998, the first generation of the smart achieved cult status in a very short space of time. The smart fortwo sets standards in its class in terms of comfort, agility, safety and environmental friendliness.
The developers have set even higher standards for the new smart fortwo. The optimised running gear, the longer wheelbase and the slightly larger body make the smart fortwo even more comfortable. The active and passive safety have been further improved. The new drive engineering provides for even more agility and driving fun and also gives the new smart fortwo a top position worldwide in terms of environmental friendliness.
Evolutionary design: the evolution of an icon
The carefully developed design gives the smart fortwo a fresh, more masculine appearance. Yet it retains its unmistakable character and it will always be recognised as a smart at first glance. Its one-box design, its compact dimensions, the two-colour and two-material concept with the striking tridion safety cell and the innovative and extremely practical plastic bodypanels - all these features remain.
In future, too, the new smart fortwo will embody the brand's core values of innovation, functionality and joie de vivre. It is a classless car that conveys a positive attitude to life. Its owners have a modern way of thinking and show social and environmental responsibility, demonstrating the form that perfect urban mobility can take today. For them the smart fortwo is a kind of automotive declaration of independence to the effect that this is all the car a person needs in the city.
No other car has a younger clientele. 85 percent of buyers are under 40. They are people with individual lifestyles from different social classes. They all drive a smart. Apart from being extremely economical, lively and easy to drive, with its length of less than three metres this vehicle also takes up very little space on the road and in car parks. The smart fortwo has become a familiar part of the roadscape in many cities, it is now sold in 36 countries worldwide and it is well-liked everywhere. More than 770,000 first generation smart fortwos have been built since 1998.
Engines: powerful, clean, economical
The smart fortwo will be launched in April 2007 with reengineered uprated petrol engines. The three cylinder engine has capacity of one litre and delivers 45 kW, 52 kW or 62 kW (61 bhp, 71 bhp or 84 bhp). The smart fortwo cdi has a power output of 33 kW (45 bhp).
All engines are linked to a new automated manual five-speed transmission from Getrag. The petrol variants now have a maximum speed of 145 km/h - 10 km/h more than the predecessor model.
Despite the greater engine power, the petrol variants consume just 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres under standard conditions. The 45 kW and 52 kW variants of the smart fortwo coupé consume even less: the consumption under standard conditions in accordance with the New European Driving Cycle is just 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres.
The diesel version boasts even lower consumption. The new smart fortwo cdi does not only comply with all European exhaust gas standards - with standard consumption of just 3.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres it has the lowest consumption in its class. With CO2 emissions of just 90 grams per kilometre, the smart fortwo cdi achieves "three litre" status and has the lowest CO2 emissions of all cars on the market today.
Still smart - inside and out
The dimensions have increased as against the first generation. The 19.5 centimetre increase in length benefits pedestrians, rear impact protection and especially ride comfort.
The luggage compartment can now hold 220 litres - 70 litres more than before - and when loaded to the roof there is space for up to 340 litres (an extra 80 litres). The new smart fortwo also features the familiar twin-section tailgate. The lower part can be used as a little platform and facilitates loading and unloading. When folded down it can take a load of 50 kilograms.
Like the exterior, it goes without saying that the interior of the smart fortwo remains truly smart. Features include the characteristic external-mounted air vents and dials, the large fabric-covered areas on doors and instrument panel, the safety seats with integral seat belts and last but not least the ignition lock behind the shift lever.
The observer immediately notices that the instrument panel is no longer curved in an S-shape towards the passenger side but is now straight. This is partly to comply with US crash regulations. Nevertheless - and perhaps because of this - the new smart fortwo offers a unique feeling of spaciousness.
Safety at the highest level
The high level of passive safety has been further improved. The new smart fortwo has been subjected to extensive tests. These do not only include the requirements of EuroNCAP; as the new smart fortwo will also be sold in the USA from 2008 it also complies with American crash regulations. As well as this, the extremely strict standards of the Mercedes Car Group apply to the smart.
New regulations concerning pedestrian protection have been implemented in the front section. Furthermore, new head/thorax side airbags offering extensive protection in the event of a side crash are available as an option.
smart fortwo cabrio with an electric soft top
The smart fortwo cabrio's electric soft top is a further example of the enhanced comfort. It can now be fully automatically operated and infinitely adjusted to any position. This means that the rear part, too, can be opened to the final position and closed again at the touch of a button.
Unique: the smart fortwo does not have to be stationary for the soft top to be opened or closed - this can be done at any speed. Furthermore, the roof bars can be removed and stowed in a special compartment in the tailgate. The soft top offers further added comfort and safety thanks to the heated rear window made of glass.
Equipment variants pure, pulse and passion, BRABUS
The equipment variants go by the names of pure, pulse and passion. Whereas the basic pure version has a plastic roof, the pulse and passion feature a transparent panoramic roof made of polycarbonate. Fans of the BRABUS variant also have something to look forward to: the introduction of an uprated BRABUS variant is planned for autumn 2007.
Extensive range of standard equipment and options
The most important standard features include the tridion safety cell, front airbags, seat belts with belt tensioners and belt-force limiters and safety seats with integral seat belts. Further features that are unique in the standard spec of vehicles in this class include esp, abs and an integrated brake assist.
Further excerpts from the long list of standard equipment: H7 headlights featuring projection technology, central locking with radio remote control, folding driver and passenger seat backrests that can be adjusted with a notch lever, an exterior temperature indicator, comfort windscreen wipers with speed-sensitive interval wiping and indicators with lanechanger function.
The smart fortwo can be individualised and tailored to customer requirements with a wide range of extras. These include head/thorax side airbags, air conditioning (standard for passion), electric power steering, heated seats, alloy wheels (standard for pulse and passion), leather seats, Isofix child seat fastener, a high quality audio system with a CD changer for 6 CDs and a sound system featuring a subwoofer and an MP3 interface.
Furthermore, a portable navigation system that can be integrated in the car is available. Voice instructions are given via the loudspeakers of the stereo system. Further options that are often only found in high-end cars include a light and rain sensor and electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors.
Special model "edition limited one"
When the first smart was introduced in 1998 customers had an opportunity to buy a special limited edition given the name "limited/1". A limited edition of 7,500 exclusively equipped vehicles was produced and today this model is a sought-after collector's item.
For the market launch in April 2007 a limited edition of the new smart fortwo will once again be available. Just 1,500 units of the "edition limited one" will be produced as a coupé version only.
The exterior of the "edition limited one" is characterised by a silver tridion safety cell and bodypanels in exclusive pyrite grey metallic. The door mirror caps and radiator grille are also painted silver. Alloy wheels in a six-spoke design with wide tyres and the panoramic roof are further stylish exterior features.
The "edition limited one" is powered by a three-cylinder 52 kW (71 bhp) petrol engine. Interior features include air conditioning, heated seats and a radio.
The special model boasts special exclusive cognac brown used-look nappa leather upholstery which is also featured on the three-spoke sports steering wheel (incl. steering wheel gearshift) and the gear knob. The velour floor mats also have a leather trim.
Hambach: exemplary modular production and protection of the environment
The smart fortwo is produced in the French town of Hambach. System partners on site deliver pre-assembled modules straight to the production line. The production process has been optimised and the production time reduced as against the predecessor from 9.5 hours to 8 hours. The whole final assembly, which only took 4.5 hours for the predecessor model, now takes just 3.5 hours.
Great importance is given to protection of the environment in Hambach. For example, only water-soluble, solvent-free base coats are used for the smart fortwo's plastic bodypanels.
The tridion safety cell is powder coated and no solvents are needed here, either. The solid colour bodypanels in the colours black, white and yellow are fully recyclable.
The evolution of an icon
Should an icon like the smart fortwo undergo further development at all? The answer is "yes" – indeed, this is a must. For the new smart fortwo it was important to strike a balance between retaining the strengths of the previous model on the one hand and venturing new ideas on the other hand.
The past ten years have seen great changes to the terms of reference. The more than 770,000 smart fortwo customers influenced the requirements for the successor model. However, so did new legal requirements, especially those for the American market.
The brand, at its youthful age of just eight, also stakes out clear terms of reference for the design. It was important to embody innovation, functionality and joie de vivre - the core values of smart – in the second smart fortwo generation just as these were anchored in the first generation.
Front view
The projection headlamps are not only unique in this vehicle class, they also give the smart a high-tech and more striking "face". The indicators have been integrated in the headlamps.
The larger track widths give the new smart fortwo a wider and more athletic appearance. This impression is also underlined by the wider standard tyres (front: 155, rear 175).
Side view
The new smart fortwo is slightly longer, but it still has extremely compact dimensions. It is exactly 195 millimetres longer than the first generation. The front overhang is 72 millimetres longer, the wheelbase has increased by 55 millimetres and the rear overhang is 68 millimetres longer.
The designers have succeeded in retaining the smart fortwo's typical silhouette whilst giving the car a more masculine character. Clarity and modernity characterise the shape.
In addition to the slimmer tridion safety cell in the sill and door area, the horizontal door handle is a striking new feature. It has been rotated by 90 degrees compared with its predecessor. The rear window is less steeply angled - firstly, to keep the roof short and also to give the car a more pronounced coupé character. In order to comply with European laws relating to pedestrian protection the front is now a little higher and steeper.
Rear view
The new smart fortwo is 43 millimetres wider. However, it appears wider than this because the rear apron now runs straight through without an indent. The wide design of the tailgate handle also contributes to the wide effect.
Four instead of six rear lights now adorn the rear view of the smart fortwo. The rear light, brake light and indicator are located at the top. The bottom lights are housed in circular reflectors. Here, the rear fog light is located on the left-hand side and the reversing light on the right.
The rear window reaches across almost the whole width of the vehicle and is framed by two black high-gloss panels.
smart fortwo cabrio: fully automatic opening and closing of the soft top at any speed
The open two-seater has enjoyed great popularity in many European cities for years, especially in Rome. It is an icon with cult character.
The soft top can be opened and closed at any speed. In addition to this the new smart fortwo cabrio offers enhanced comfort: whereas the driver previously had to get out to lock the soft top in its final position at the rear, this is now done fully automatically at the touch of a button.
A further new feature on the smart fortwo cabrio is the heated rear window made of glass. It has a higher position than the previous PVC window and this greatly increases the loading volume when the soft top is folded down.
As before, drivers of a smart fortwo cabrio can release the rear bow of the soft top and swing it up. The soft top snaps into place in a folded up position facilitating loading of the luggage compartment.
For even more cabriolet feeling, the roof bars can be removed by releasing levers on the B-pillars and stored in special compartments integrated in the tailgate.
The soft top itself is made from a strong black polyacrylic fabric on the outside with a polyester/cotton mix on the inside and a layer of rubber in between.
The roof spoiler made of black polyamide boasts an aerodynamic shape and also accommodates the third brake light. The entire soft top has been developed and produced by the roof specialist Edscha.
The body structure of the smart fortwo cabrio shares 70 percent of its panels with the coupé. The A-pillar has been strengthened in the windscreen area with an internal high-strength steel tube. The solid roll-over bar between the B-pillars is welded and bolted to the tridion safety cell. All these measures add just 15 kilograms to the weight of the car.

The colours
The new smart fortwo also features the two-colour concept typical of smart. The tridion safety cell is available in black or silver and the bodypanels are available in a choice of six colours. The basic colours are black, yellow and white. The metallic colours blue, red and silver are available subject to an additional charge.
Equipment
Pure equipment line
The pure entry-level variant comes with everything that makes a smart a smart. The exterior of the pure is characterized by a black grooved plastic roof and steel rims. It comes with a black tridion safety cell.
In the interior, different surfaces and colours largely distinguish the basic version from the sporty pulse and the elegant and extensively equipped passion.
The lower part of the instrument panel (knee pad) and the door trim are made of grained black plastic. The two-spoke steering wheel is a further feature of the pure, as are its mechanical windows and the additional storage compartment in the tailgate (not for the 45 kW variant).
pulse equipment line
The name stands for sportiness. The pulse also features a black tridion safety cell, however this is optionally available in silver. Its six-spoke alloy wheels with wide tyres (175/55 R 15 at front, 195/50 R 15 at rear) give it a beefy appearance.
The interior of the pulse features an upholstery colour exclusively available for this equipment line and matching fabric elements for the instrument panel, knee pads and door trim that create a pleasant atmosphere. Above the passengers' heads is a newly developed panoramic roof made of polycarbonate. A black blind provides sun protection.
The sporty character is emphasized by the rev counter and clock on the dashboard and a three-spoke leather sports steering wheel including steering wheel gearshift. Further standard features include electric windows and fog lights.
passion equipment line
The elegant and extensively equipped passion can always be identified by its silver tridion cell. The door mirrors and radiator grille are also painted silver. Further features include a panoramic roof made of polycarbonate and twelve-spoke alloy wheels (front tyres 155/65 R 15, rear tyres 175/60 R 15).
Like the pulse, the fabric elements on the instrument panel, knee pad and door trim match the colour of the upholstery. Three different colours with a special fabric design are available. In addition to red and black, the interior is now also available in beige.
Further standard equipment includes air conditioning with temperature control, a two-spoke leather steering wheel and the automatic gear programme softouch.
Like the pulse the passion also features electric windows and a luggage compartment cover including a net bag.

Accessories
The smart fortwo can be even better tailored to customers' personal requirements with an extensive range of accessories. For example, the radiator grille, door mirror caps and rear trim strip in high-gloss chrome give the smart fortwo an even more elegant appearance.
A flexible luggage compartment management system with slot-in sections that is also available as a genuine accessory maintains order in the luggage compartment.
This enables the luggage compartment to be partitioned as required and shopping can be fixed with straps or a bag to prevent it from sliding around.
In addition to a hazard warning triangle, emergency jacket and first aid kid, the safety plus package includes a torch, umbrella and ice scraper. Everything is cleverly stowed in space-saving mode in the compartment in the tailgate. Optimum use is made of the space available and the interior is kept neat and tidy.
Comfort: smart fortwo with greatly enhanced comfort
Drivers of the new smart fortwo will immediately notice the enhanced comfort as against the predecessor model. This is thanks to the new automated manual five-speed transmission, the longer wheelbase and the wider track. But that's not all – comfort also includes the feeling of spaciousness. The smart fortwo offers spaciousness comparable with a standard-size saloon.
Customers who took a seat in the predecessor model for the first time were surprised how easy it is to get in and out and just how spacious the smart fortwo is inside. The passenger seat is positioned 15 centimetres further back than the driver's seat to give the passengers optimum shoulder room.
Comfort also means feeling comfortable and being in a good mood when on the road. The smart ensures this, especially in city traffic. smart drivers have no problems finding a parking space, and this provides for stress-free driving. The automated manual five-speed transmission removes the need for clutchwork. A tap on the shift lever is all it takes to change gear.
Seats
The safety seats with integral seat belts have undergone considerable further improvement compared with the previous model and have been given a different look. The sides are well contoured and offer pleasant lateral support. The high quality upholstery has a silk-gloss finish. Leather trim is available as an option.
Even longer objects can be easily transported: a lever on the inside of the passenger seat both reclines the backrest and enables it to be folded forward to a horizontal position. A pull ring under the seat enables fore/aft adjustment (230 millimetres).
Instrument panel
The changed shape of the instrument panel offers improved ergonomics, more clarity and a greater feeling of spaciousness. The suspended arrangement of the instrument panel conveys lightness and makes the interior of the new smart fortwo just as unique as that of the previous model.
On account of US crash regulations the instrument panel runs straight. It is framed by two bows on the left and right-hand sides that represent a visual continuation of the structure of the tridion safety cell and support the upper and lower wings of the instrument panel. The lower wing also serves as a knee pad that offers knee protection in the event of a crash.
The added elements such as the external-mounted air vents (that are now cylindrical rather than spherical) and the analogue clock and rev counter on the dashboard (standard for pulse) have been retained.
The driver can see the centrally positioned speedometer through the two-spoke or sporty three-spoke leather steering wheel. The large display shows the fuel level (left), the gear engaged, the coolant temperature (right) and the odometer. The daily mileage is shown below this. The driver can switch between this and the exterior temperature indicator at the touch of a button. LEDs are now used for the indicator lights.
Operation
The control unit for heating, air conditioning and ventilation has a central, ergonomic position at the top of the centre console and is framed by two further air vents. Slide controls regulate the fan levels (1-4) and the temperature of the air conditioning (18-26 degrees Celsius) (a standard feature for passion).
A control that can be rotated by 360 degrees distributes the air to where it is needed. The air flow rate has also been greatly improved in the new smart fortwo.
It is 20 percent higher than in the predecessor model – like the performance of the air conditioning.
The large audio unit is located below the heating and air conditioning controls. Customers can choose between a standard CD radio or one with a CD changer for six CDs. Large buttons and a clear layout make operation child’s play. In addition, a sound system with a subwoofer and MP3 connection is available.
The designers used the central space on the lower wing of the instrument panel for further ergonomically positioned control buttons, for example for the seat heating, front fog lamps and central locking.
Like the predecessor model, the new smart does not have a continuous centre console from the floor to the instrument panel. This additionally creates a spacious and "airy" atmosphere instead of visually separating the driver and passenger.
The ergonomically shaped gear knob, the two steering column control stalks and the interior mirror have been adopted from the predecessor model. smart drivers will also be familiar with the location of the ignition lock behind the shift lever – typical of smart.
Luggage compartment
The previous smart fortwo had room for six drinks crates. These also fit into the new smart - but that's not all as the luggage compartment capacity has increased from 150 to 220 litres (in accordance with VDA).
Customers who want to load their car to the roof even have 340 litres of space available. Four folding plastic boxes for supermarket shopping also fit comfortably behind the seats.
The level loading space is particularly user-friendly with no edges to get in the way of the level surface. The folding rear door is a further advantage and this can be used as a surface to put things on.
Furthermore, the twin-section tailgate requires very little room to open in tight parking spaces. Longer objects can also be transported in the new smart fortwo by simply folding the backrest of the passenger seat forwards into a horizontal position.
Storage compartments
The passenger can use a spacious storage recess in the instrument panel. Alternatively, special detachable bags are available for the storage recesses.
A lockable glove compartment can be ordered as an option. The developers were able to make the best possible use of the bottom section of the tailgate. Drivers of a smart fortwo cabrio know that the roof bars can be stored here. However, this space was not previously used for the coupé. A cover now opens to provide eight litres of additional stowage space (not in the 45 kW variant) that is perfect for storing all kinds of odds and ends.
Practical details
The designers have also put a lot of thought into how customers can best carry out simple servicing work for themselves, for example refilling the windscreen washer fluid. Two levers in the grille release the front lid which can be secured with two holders in front of the bumper. The washer fluid, light bulbs, coolant and brake fluid are then easily accessible.
The rear window of the smart fortwo coupé (like the cabrio's flap) can now be opened with an electric push button switch located in the handle recess above the licence plate. This also allows remote unlocking using the key. The push button switch just needs to be pressed for approx. 1.5 seconds. Should the battery in the key be empty, the driver’s door can also be opened mechanically.
Panoramic roof
In the pulse and passion variants the new smart fortwo features a transparent panoramic roof made of polycarbonate. This covers an area of 1.1 square metres, half of which is transparent.
The polycarbonate has a scratch-resistant exterior and interior coating which also gives the roof a slight tint. 100 percent of UV rays are kept out. A black sunblind made of polyester that is easy to move backwards and forwards offers additional sun protection if required.
Much longer maintenance intervals
In addition to low consumption, the low running costs make the smart fortwo the most economical car there is. The maintenance intervals are now even longer. For example, the 52 kW variant now only needs to be inspected every two years or every 40,000 kilometres. In the meantime, an oil change is all that is needed. The "oil service plus" is recommended - a brief vehicle check instead of a full inspection.
Safety: Meets all worldwide crash safety requirements
The smart fortwo predecessor model was seen a real trendsetter in terms of safety developments in small cars. And that applies to the new version too. The smart fortwo has been subjected to extensive tests.
Not only EU requirements were considered in the crash tests undertaken, but also the – in some cases different – American laws. But that's not all: the strict standards of the Mercedes Car Group – some of which go far beyond legal requirements – also apply to the smart fortwo.
Body
The tridion safety cell protects its occupants like the hard shell around a nut. The structure is additionally reinforced with high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel at strategically important points (more than 50 percent).
The tridion safety cell’s longitudinal and transverse members activate the crumple zone of the other vehicle involved in the accident and distribute the impact energy evenly over the car’s body. And in case of a collision, the wheels also take on the function of crumple zones. When this happens, the front wheels are supported by the side members.
esp is always on board
After the seatbelt, esp – and not, as many people believe, the airbag – is lifesaver no. 2. Studies by German insurers have revealed that a quarter of all car accidents involving personal injuries and 40 percent of all fatal motor accidents could have been less severe with esp.
In other words: every year, 37,000 accidents in which people are injured and 1,100 accidents involving fatalities in Germany could be prevented, or at least their severity reduced. However, only 58 percent of models available in Germany have esp as standard. Many models do not even offer an electronic stability programme for an additional charge.
Not so for the smart fortwo: esp is a standard feature in the smart fortwo – a safety element that other manufacturers in this segment only offer for an additional charge – if at all.
If the car should ever start to lose control, esp will kick in within a matter of milliseconds. The electronics brake the individual wheels as necessary, and throttle the engine power. esp also includes an integrated hill start assist function. This prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards as it moves off on an uphill slope.
abs
The anti-lock braking system prevents the wheels from blocking during emergency braking. This reduces the braking distance, and allows the smart to remain steerable even in this emergency situation. Because it is a component of the esp, abs comes as standard in every version of the smart fortwo, and also features electronic brake-force distribution.
The integrated hydraulic brake assist function also comes as standard. It automatically triggers controlled emergency braking as soon as the electronics register that the driver has pressed the brake pedal quickly, but not firmly enough. This can considerably reduce the car’s braking distance.
Pedestrian protection
The engineers have also ensured that the smart meets the legal requirements relating to pedestrian protection. The front-end is now 72 millimetres longer. The impact zone at the front is a little steeper and a few centimetres higher than that of the previous model.
The axes of the windscreen wipers, which have a clap-hands design and come with soft aero wiper blades (unique in the small car segment), are in a concealed position. The service panel (front lid) is made from elastic plastic. The front spoiler is backed with foam five centimetres thick at impact height.
The headlamp housing is a particularly important safety feature. Because its upper part is located in the potential head impact zone, but there is not enough room in the front section of the car for the module to be moved to another position, the developers have applied break points to allow the component to collapse in case of an impact in that area.
Side protection
Sitting approximately 200 millimetres higher than in a comparable small car usually means better protection in tricky situations. Thanks to the sandwich-type construction of the tridion safety cell, the passengers are usually somewhat above the direct danger zone in the event of a side impact.
The smart’s wheels perform a safety function here as well. If the fortwo is hit from the side, its compact design is of considerable advantage. Thanks to the relatively short wheelbase of 1867 millimetres, the other car will almost always hit an axle, which can then absorb the impact energy.
All interior trims have been optimised to prevent injuries to occupants. The side roof bars, for example, have been made even slimmer to provide more headroom. And the soft foam-backed lower instrument panel (kneepad) offers a great deal more protection for the passengers' knees and lower legs.
To comply with yet more stringent crash requirements and additional US standards, the door structure of the new smart fortwo is now made of steel, instead of the aluminium used previously. High-strength sheet metal has been welded in at critical points. Overall the doors are just 2.5 kilograms heavier than those of the previous fortwo.
Airbags
Every smart comes with a full-size airbag for driver and passenger as standard. The passenger airbag (volume: 130 litres) is housed at the top of the instrument panel.
If a child seat has been fitted using an Isofix fastener (optional), the passenger airbag can be deactivated with the ignition key. The keyhole is located on the right hand side of the instrument panel. A red light will appear on the roof frame next to the interior light as a warning that the airbag is deactivated.
Also available as an option are new head/thorax side airbags, which are housed in the sides of the seat backrests. These protect both the head and the upper body.
Belts
Belt tensioners and belt-force limiters are standard features in the smart. In case of a frontal impact greater than a defined level of severity, the belt tensioners will reduce any slack in a matter of milliseconds. The belt force-limiter carefully releases more belt before too much pressure is exerted on the chest, allowing the occupants to participate in the deceleration.
Agility: more power and more driving fun
Powerful petrol engines
State-of-the-art compact three-cylinder engines are installed at the rear of the new smart fortwo. The all-aluminium engines were developed in cooperation with Mitsubishi, and are produced in Japan. They have been optimised for use in the new smart fortwo.
Naturally aspirated petrol engines rated at 45 kW (61 bhp) or 52 kW (71 bhp) are available, as is a turbo engine delivering 62 kW (84 bhp). They all have capacity of 1.0 litres. In addition to the increase in power, the maximum speed has also been increased – to 145 km/h (electronically limited).
The engine is mounted transversally in front of the rear axle, and is slanted at an angle of 45 degrees towards the rear. The cylinder barrels take the form of grey cast iron liners. Gas exchange is controlled by four valves per combustion chamber. The valves are controlled by separate intake and exhaust camshafts, via bucket tappets. The camshafts are driven via a maintenance-free timing chain.
The engine reacts spontaneously to accelerator pedal movement even at low revs and demonstrates how effectively the three-cylinder engine's variable valve control works. The intake camshafts are twisted electrohydraulically against the exhaust camshafts, providing for better filling of the combustion chambers at low revs. This gives the smart noticeably greater agility, especially in city traffic.
The 52 kW (71 bhp) version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.3 seconds, giving it a head start against some other cars at the traffic lights. And that's no surprise – after all, a smart fortwo weighs in at just 750 kilograms. The 62 kW (84 bhp) turbo version is even more dynamic sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.9 seconds.
The three-cylinder engine develops its typical beefy sound without being rough or loud. Because the masses being moved are low, there is no need for a balancer shaft – which would reduce the output of the engine. The turbo version has a torsional vibration damper on the crankshaft.
To ensure a long service life, the turbocharger is fitted with a water cooling system, while the charge air cooler is based on air/air technology and is located behind the transmission. The maximum charge pressure is 0.5 bar, with control taking place via a wastegate valve in the turbocharger. The naturally aspirated engine's compression ratio is 11.5:1, while in the turbo engine it is 10:1.
smart fortwo cdi: there's no more economical way of running a car
The modifications to the diesel engine have led to a ten percent power increase, which means that the engine now delivers 33 kW (45 bhp), but also consumes less than before. The new smart fortwo cdi achieves the coveted "three-litre car" status.
The smart fortwo cdi emits just 90 grams of CO2 per kilometre, corresponding to standard consumption of just 3.4 litres. At present there is no more economical car than the smart fortwo cdi.
New transmission improves shifting comfort, consumption and agility
In future, smart fortwo drivers will benefit from a newly-developed transmission that will take no time to get used to. Instead of the previous six gears, the transmission produced by the specialist Getrag now has five gears, and offers considerable advantages in terms of comfort, fuel consumption and agility.
In the new smart fortwo there is once again no clutch pedal, as this task is performed by an electric motor. If the shift lever on the centre console is briefly tapped forwards, the transmission will shift up a gear, and if it is drawn back, down a gear. Alternatively, the gears can be changed by means of paddles on the steering wheel (standard for pulse).
To the right of the manual level, marked with a plus and minus sign, is the neutral position, N. Reverse gear is engaged by pulling the shift lever backwards from this position.
The smart fortwo passion comes with the automatic gear programme (softouch) as standard (optional for pure and pulse). It can be recognised by a small button on the shift lever.
When this is pressed down, the transmission switches over from manual gear shifting (softip) to the automatic gear programme. It’s the ideal solution for use in stop-and-go traffic. As soon as the driver moves the shift lever manually, the system returns to manual gear-changing mode.
The developers have also greatly improved the shift delays. Shift delays have been reduced by more than half compared to the previous model. This is particularly beneficial when the driver wants to shift down two gears at once. This, coupled with the considerably increased torque, makes for even greater ride comfort. To improve ride comfort even more, the transmission has a kickdown function.
This allows the driver to use the accelerator pedal to shift down two gears at once, in both manual and automatic mode. Incorrect gear changing and overrevving are impossible, because the electronics will only accept logical gear changes.
Driving dynamics
Thanks to extensive changes to its suspension, and its new geometry, the smart’s handling has been significantly improved. It is now considerably more agile and responsive than its predecessor. However, despite the car’s more sporty design, no compromises are made on comfort, and longer journeys present no problem at all for the new smart fortwo.
The wheelbase has increased by 55, the front track widths by seven, and the rear track widths by 31 millimetres. This reduces pitching and rolling movements. The anti-roll bar at the front is now directly hinged to the McPherson strut instead of the wishbone for better responsiveness.
The diameter of the anti-roll bar is 18.5 millimetres, and it very effectively prevents the vehicle body from rolling in bends. Tyres measuring 155/60 R 15 at the front are fitted at the factory on 4.5 inch steel rims. The passion boasts alloy wheels in the same size. The pulse equipment line comes with alloy wheels measuring 175/55 R 15.
The tried-and-tested DeDion construction has been kept at the rear. The position of the central mount has been changed (moved higher), which has had a positive effect on the manoeuvrability of the fortwo. The springs are now further out than in the previous model, thereby supporting the vehicle body even more effectively against rolling. The size of the tyres on the rear axle in the basic version is 175/55 R 15 on 5.5-inch rims. For the pulse the dimensions are 195/50 R 15.
The steering greatly influences the agile driving feel: the transmission ratio is 22:1. This means that the steering is transmitted almost ten percent more directly than that of the predecessor. The turning circle is just 8.75 metres – a figure unmatched by any other small car. This makes manoeuvring extremely easy.
It allows turning in places where any other car would have to shunt to and fro. And it’s just 3.5 turns of the wheel from stop to stop. Electric power steering is available for the smart fortwo at an extra charge.
The transmission ratio is just 21:1. It operates on a linear basis and gives the fortwo astonishingly agile handling. The electric boost power varies according to vehicle speed, steering angle and the amount of force applied to the steering wheel.
All these measures mean that the smart is now even sprightlier than before. It is noticeably agiler, sportier – and at the same time more comfortable.
esp is a standard feature
The electronic stability programme esp with integrated abs and electronic brake-force distribution are included in the standard spec, as is a hydraulic brake booster. Whereas other manufacturers in the micro car segment only offer esp subject to an additional charge – if at all – esp is a standard feature in the smart fortwo.
The fortwo is the only car in its class to come with brake assist. When it detects abrupt emergency braking, brake assist automatically provides full brake pressure in order to ensure optimum deceleration. It offers a helping hand in those situations where the driver has pressed the brake pedal quickly, but not firmly enough.
Because the electronically limited maximum speed of the petrol engines has been increased, the smart fortwo’s brakes have grown as well. Disc brakes are fitted at the front, while drum brakes are fitted at the rear.
Environmental friendliness: Extremely low consumption and excellent overall environmental balance
The petrol versions of the new smart fortwo are among the most economical vehicles in the micro car segment. Both the naturally aspirated and the turbo version consume less that five litres of premium grade petrol. The exact figures for combined NEDC consumption are: 4.7 and 4.9 litres/100 km.
The smart fortwo with a starter generator that will be available from the end of 2007 and will be based on the 52 kW petrol version, promises further savings of up to 13 percent in city traffic.
This has particular advantages when driving in urban areas and frequent stop-and-go traffic: the three-cylinder engine automatically switches off when the car stops at traffic lights, for example. It starts again as soon as the driver presses the accelerator pedal.
The new smart fortwo cdi consumes even less fuel. The diesel variant achieves the coveted "three litre" status. It emits just 90 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre, meaning it consumes less than 3.4 litres of fuel per 100 km under standard conditions.
The new smart fortwo cdi complies with the legal requirements (EU4) even without a diesel particle filter. However, the smart fortwo cdi is fitted with a diesel particle filter (open system) as a standard feature in Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
The smart fortwo cdi is currently one of the few cars in the micro car segment to be offered with a particle reduction system as standard. The open system filters out more than 40 percent of the particulate emissions.
In addition to this, a year after the market launch the smart fortwo cdi will be offered with a closed system.
smart fortwo awarded environmental certificate
In October 2006 the Öko-Trend institute for environmental research certified a very good overall environmental balance for the smart fortwo and awarded it the environmental certificate for cars.
This award is not only dependent on fuel consumption; the certificate is based on an extensive assessment of a car's environmental compatibility. As well as fuel consumption, noise and pollutant emissions, ecological criteria such as details of the manufacturer's production, procurement, logistics, recycling and environmental management are included in the assessment.
These things have always been important to smart: protection of the environment was and continues to be an integral part of all the company's fields of activity. This does not only apply to the production facility in Hambach, France - it also applies to the smart fortwo itself, from the development and production of the vehicle to its operational period and later recycling.
Production
The smart fortwo is produced at "smartville" in Hambach, France. System partners on site deliver pre-assembled modules straight to the production line. The production process has been optimised to such an extent that the entire final assembly process, which previously only took 4.5 hours, now takes just 3.5 hours.
Great importance is given to protection of the environment in Hambach. For example, for the smart’s three basic colours – black, white and yellow – only water-soluble paints are used. The bodypanels with moulded-in colour are fully recyclable.
The tridion safety cell is powder coated which removes the need for solvents. Parts of the underbody and the inner wheelhouses are produced entirely from recyclates. The instrument panel is made partly from the renewable raw material flax.
Parking spaces/car parks/perpendicular parking
Though the smart fortwo is a little longer than its predecessor, it is still unbeatable in terms of the amount of parking space it requires. Where any other small car would have to pass on by, the smart fits in. No other car in its class takes up less space on the road. It’s even still possible to park perpendicular to the flow of traffic. No more than 2.50 metres of the car will ever project into the road, provided that the wheels are right up against the kerb so that part of the vehicle’s body (either at the front or back) extends over it.
Ease of repair
The new smart fortwo is again characterised by a sturdy tridion safety cell with an outer skin made from elastic plastic components (bodypanels). The smart comes away completely undamaged by small parking bumps, which for many other cars would immediately mean expensive repairs.
The white, black or yellow panels are flexible and the colour is moulded-in, so scratches go virtually unnoticed. If the worst comes to the worst, they can simply be replaced quickly and inexpensively. There’s no need for repainting.
Further protection against damage is provided by an aluminium support located transversally behind the bumper, and crash boxes, which absorb deformation energy and protect the vehicle body itself. The boxes are bolted on and can be replaced inexpensively if necessary.
Stability of value
After eight years on the market, the smart fortwo is one of the most value-stable cars there is - not just in its class. This is probably thanks to its cult status. The new smart fortwo looks well set to continue setting standards in terms of value stability because in future there will be an increasing demand for inexpensive and environmentally friendly mobility, however without making any compromises on comfort, safety and driving fun. And this is exactly what the new smart fortwo has to offer.
