The Dodge brand is running on all cylinders, introducing the 2008 Dodge Avenger, ?an all-new mid-size sedan that combines bold, aggressive Dodge styling with innovative interior features, high-levels of safety and reliability, exhilarating performance and excellent fuel efficiency of 30 miles per gallon (mpg) (32 mpg based on 2007 EPA fuel economy standards).
Avenger also is the Dodge brand's first mid-size car to offer all-wheel-drive capability combined with a sport-tuned suspension, performance steering and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Traction Control, all of which combine to give Avenger its on-road performance attitude. And with a starting U.S. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of $18,895 (including a $675 destination charge), the all-new Avenger is priced $1,605 below the comparable outgoing Stratus with $985 more content, including standard side-curtain and front-seat-mounted side air bags, Chill Zone, theft alarm and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, to name a few.
This all-new mid-size sedan also marks a milestone in the Dodge brand's car renaissance. From Viper to Caliber and every segment in between, Dodge now offers an extremely competitive car.
"The all-new 2008 Dodge Avenger continues the Dodge brand's product offensive and will bring even more buyers into the Dodge brand showroom," said George Murphy, Senior Vice President ?Global Marketing. "Just as the Dodge Charger, Magnum, Caliber and Nitro have sparked new interest in the Dodge brand in their respective segments, the Dodge Avenger brings that assertive attitude and bold styling to the competitive mid-size sedan segment. There's just nothing else like it on the road."
The 2008 Dodge Avenger will be available in U.S. dealerships in the first quarter of 2007 and in global volume markets, in both left-hand and right-hand drive, by mid-2007. Four models will be offered in the United States: Dodge Avenger SE, Dodge Avenger SXT and Dodge Avenger R/T, and a first for Dodge in the mid-size segment, Dodge Avenger R/T AWD (late availability).
Bold, Aggressive Dodge Styling
The 2008 Dodge Avenger builds on the bold, aggressive styling, performance and excitement of the Dodge Charger.
"The all-new Dodge Avenger brings Dodge brand American muscle car heritage into the global mid-size car segment," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President-Design. "Avenger does for the global D-segment what Caliber has done in the global C-segment ?it offers a unique alternative to the competition."
From the front, there's no mistaking Dodge's heritage in Avenger's aggressive exterior lines. The brand's signature crosshair grille and large, modern quad headlamps housed in black add to Avenger's menacing glare. The Dodge Avenger's chrome grille with black texture accentuates the vehicle's serious, almost sinister appearance. A stamped formation carries the vertical lines of the crosshair grille over the hood.
Avenger's side profile shares more family traits with the Dodge Charger. Muscular rear shoulders, large wheels and tires and a sleek rear spoiler embody the Dodge brand attributes of bold, powerful and capable. Avenger's long greenhouse is created by black appliques on the B-pillars, which make this mid-size sedan look like it's pouncing forward, even when it's at a standstill.
From the rear, large, expressive taillamp modules placed at the corners frame the deck lid, which includes a sleekly integrated, finely tuned body-color spoiler. This spoiler and chrome-tipped dual exhaust outlets communicate the performance capability of the Avenger R/T's 3.5-liter engine.
The all-new 2008 Dodge Avenger rides on a 108.9-inch wheelbase and 61.8-inch track, which adds to its athletic stance, improves ride quality and stability and maximizes crush space in the engine compartment. Overall, Avenger is 1.2 inches wider and 4 inches taller than the vehicle it replaces.
Impressive Interior Makes Bold Statement
Graphic design elements, which set the new 2008 Dodge Avenger's exterior design apart from the competition, also are evident throughout the vehicle's spacious interior.
Carefully matched grains and low gloss levels contribute to Avenger's rich-looking interior surfaces. The instrument panel top pad and center stack feature a Franklin grain with low-gloss finish to match the defroster grille, driver cubby and Dodge logo on passenger side surrounds. From the cluster bezel to climate control knobs, circles are a primary graphic element repeated throughout the Dodge Avenger's interior.
Taking a cue from the Dodge Ram name, the Avenger's center stack features a V-like ram's horn shape that surrounds the gated shifter bezel and serves as a design focal point. Avenger's center stack features dual heating and air conditioning vents. A large opening below the vents provides room for either the standard AM/FM/CD radio or the available cutting-edge MyGIG Multimedia Navigation/Audio/Entertainment/Communication system. On vehicles equipped with the UConnect® Hands-free Communication System, phone buttons are packaged in the radio control head for easy access and a clean, streamlined appearance.
Unique to Dodge Avenger in the mid-size segment is Chill Zone, a chilled beverage storage bin that is standard on all Avenger models. Housed in the passenger side upper instrument panel, the bin can hold and chill as many as four 12-oz. beverage cans.
Avenger's interior provides comfortable seating for the driver and as many as four passengers. Drivers sit 2.5 inches higher than they did in Dodge's previous mid-size sedan, giving them a command-of-the-road seating position. The interior cabin also is extremely spacious with 100.9 cu. ft. of room, which is an additional 7 cubic feet of interior passenger volume compared with the vehicle it replaces. There are 2.5 inches more headroom, 1.2 inches more shoulder room and an inch more hip room in the front seat. Luggage volume in the trunk is a competitive 13.35 cubic feet.
All-wheel Drive, Sport Suspension and Performance Steering Accentuate Avenger R/T's On-road Attitude
The Avenger R/T also is the Dodge brand's first mid-size sedan to offer all-wheel-drive capability (late availability). Avenger's all-wheel-drive system, available on models sold in the United States, works on demand, driving only the front wheels until power to the rear wheels is needed. All-wheel drive also is used on dry pavement between speeds of 25 and 65 mph to enhance handling during performance driving. This system provides added traction on snow, ice and other low-traction surfaces without having to be switched on and off. All-wheel drive, combined with a sport-tuned suspension, performance steering and ESP with Traction Control, all combine to give Avenger R/T its on-road performance attitude.
Powertrain Options Deliver Excellent Power, Fuel Efficiency and Flex-fuel Availability
Three engine options power 2008 Dodge Avengers sold in the United States: the new standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine, an available flex-fuel 2.7-liter V-6 engine and an available 3.5-liter V-6 engine coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle with Auto Stick.
The 2008 Dodge Avenger SE and SXT feature a standard four-cylinder engine that rivals the best in the mid-size car segment when it comes to fuel economy. Avenger's 2.4-liter World Engine with dual variable valve timing delivers fuel efficiency in the city of 21 mpg (24 mpg using 2007 EPA standards), an excellent 30 mpg on the highway (32 mpg based on 2007 EPA standards), as well as smooth, quiet operation. Mated to a four-speed automatic transaxle, this new engine provides a 15 percent increase in horsepower (173 horsepower vs. 150 horsepower) and an 8 percent improvement in fuel economy compared with the 2.4-liter engine it replaces.
The Dodge Avenger SXT features an available Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) 2.7-liter V-6 engine that provides value- and performance-conscious consumers the power of a V-6 engine with a price that compares with the competitions' four-cylinder engines. Avenger's 2.7-liter V-6 engine produces 189 horsepower and 191 lb.-ft. of torque, providing more low-end torque (at an rpm 850 lower) compared with the 2.7-liter engine it replaces. This 2.7-liter V-6 engine achieves 19 mpg in the city (22 mpg based on 2007 EPA standards) and 27 mpg on the highway (30 mpg based on 2007 EPA standards). It also can operate effectively on any blend of gasoline and fuel-grade ethanol up to E-85.
Dodge Avenger R/T and R/T AWD sedans sold in the United States feature a standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 235 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle that comes standard with Auto Stick. The combination of the upgraded 3.5-liter V6 engine and six-speed automatic transaxle delivers excellent performance and fuel efficiency, as well as smooth, quiet operation.
The 2008 Dodge Avenger R/T's six-speed automatic transaxle provides quicker standing-start acceleration than a four- or five-speed transaxle because of its numerically higher first gear ratio. A more robust differential with increased torque capacity enhances launch performance by requiring less torque management, electronically limiting the torque that is available during the initial stages of standing-start acceleration. Smaller steps between ratios also make for a smoother, quieter ride, as the engine speed doesn't change as often with each shift. In addition, more ratio choices, more appropriate ratios for quicker acceleration and a lower overall top gear ratio provide a quiet ride and improved fuel economy at highway speeds.
Innovative Technologies Make Life Easier and Safer
In addition to Dodge Avenger's bold, aggressive design and functional interior, this all-new mid-size sedan also features a slew of new technologies unique in the segment.
"The 2008 Dodge Avenger heats up the mid-size car competition with several cool technologies," said Tom Loveless, Director-Dodge Marketing and Global Communications. "From an available one-of-a-kind chilled beverage storage bin in the instrument panel to a heated/cooled cupholder and heated cloth seats, Avenger offers features buyers will really warm up to."
Many unique features set Dodge Avenger apart in the extremely competitive mid-size car segment. These features include:
Chill Zone - a storage compartment in the top of the instrument panel that holds up to four standing 12 oz. beverage cans. Depending on ambient temperature and air conditioning settings, the bin can keep beverages cool
A heated/cooled front cupholder that keeps cold beverages cool and hot beverages warm. The system heats to 140 degrees Fahrenheit or cools to 35 degrees Fahrenheit
YES Essentials - an easy-care, soil-repellent and anti-microbial textile that protects seats from stains, odors and discoloration
Heated cloth seats
An available DVD rear-seat entertainment system that includes AM/FM stereo radio with MP3 capable CD/DVD player, six-disc CD/DVD changer and SIRIUS® Satellite Digital Audio Radio
Light-emitting Diode (LED) interior lighting with high-focus white lights that provide directional lighting in both the front and rear seats
MP3 play capability on all audio systems
The 2008 Dodge Avenger also features MyGIGA, a cutting-edge information, entertainment and safety navigation audio system that raises the bar on in-vehicle communications. This best-in-class, next-generation navigation radio features a 6.5-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Display with a touch-screen panel that can support 65,000 colors, providing a three-dimensional appearance to graphics and animation, as well as multiple font sizes and styles. The MyGIG system follows voice-activated commands and includes many new features for music, sound, movies and personalized picture displays, including:
A 20 gigabyte hard disc drive that includes Music Juke Box for organizing music and pictures on the hard drive
Universal Serial Bus (USB) that provides both MP3 connectivity and downloading of WMA, MP3 and JPEG files onto the hard drive
Gracenote® database installed on the hard drive, which provides song identification, including composer, artist and title
Playlist creation capability to provide easy access to files
Voice memo recording, which allows a message up to 3 minutes long to be recorded using the microphone integrated into the rearview mirror
Radio screen, which can display movies (when vehicle is not in motion)
SIRIUS Satellite Radio, which provides customers with more than 125 channels of the best music, entertainment and information coast-to-coast, 24 hours a day. This includes 100 percent commercial-free music, as well as sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic and weather
UConnect® Hands-free Communication System that uses Bluetooth® technology to provide voice-activated wireless communication between the occupants' compatible cell phones and the vehicle's onboard receiver. The hands-free option promotes safety, freedom, value and flexibility
Safety Features and Structure Combine to Protect Vehicle Occupants
Safety and security are a top priority among mid-size car buyers in the United States, and the all-new 2008 Dodge Avenger offers a unique combination of class-leading safety features that are designed to keep occupants both safe and secure. Avenger's safety cage is constructed with dual-phase, high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel components designed to protect occupants in all driving situations. Avenger's extremely strong safety cage is complemented with a combination of standard safety items demanded by buyers in the mid-size segment, including:
Advanced multi-stage front air bags
Side-curtain air bags
Front-seat-mounted side air bags
Anti-lock brakes and ESP with Traction Control also are available on the 2008 Dodge Avenger.
Hitting the Bulls-eye
The all-new 2008 Dodge Avenger will compete in the largest, most competitive segment of the U.S. passenger car market: the 1.9-million-unit-a-year standard mid-size segment, which accounts for approximately 11.4 percent of the total car and truck industry and approximately 31 percent of the passenger car market. Highly fluctuating gas prices and new model offerings suggest the market will see future growth, and with its bold Dodge design, value price, solid standard equipment and innovative features, the new Dodge Avenger is ready to pounce when traditional mid-size car buyers are drawn into Dodge dealer showrooms, looking for what only Avenger can offer: pure Dodge attitude in an affordable performance package.
Avenger is designed to appeal to Generation Xers who are 30-45-years-old, married and have a median income of approximately $60,000. Sixty percent are male, and 40 percent are college-educated. Many have small families with one or two children. These mid-size car buyers are youthful, full-of-life and have active lifestyles. They enjoy challenging themselves at their jobs and with their hobbies. They want a vehicle that is affordable and matches their personality, something with a unique style that offers sporty performance, enhances their self image and is fun to drive. Dodge Avenger, with its bold, aggressive Dodge design, functional interior, innovative features and essential levels of reliability, gives them a car that will impress their friends with its looks and performance.
2008 Dodge Avenger Production
Production of the 2008 Dodge Avenger began in the fourth quarter of 2006 at the refurbished Sterling Heights (Mich.) Assembly Plant, alongside the Chrysler Sebring and Chrysler Sebring Convertible. Avenger's 173 horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine is built in the state-of-the art Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) plant in Dundee, Mich. The 2.7-liter V-6 engine and the 3.5-liter V-6 engine are built at the Kenosha (Wis.) Engine Plant.

Designed for global appeal broadens Dodge brand's product portfolio to the D-segment

"Avenger's unmistakable Dodge design cues will have the same impact in the competitive mid-size segment that Charger and Magnum have had in the large-car segment and Caliber has seen in the compact car segment," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President Design. "Avenger's in-your-face, menacing Dodge styling definitely sets it apart from every other vehicle on the road."
From the front, there's no mistaking the bold presence of Dodge's heritage in Avenger's aggressive exterior lines. The Dodge brand's signature wraparound crosshair grille creates a menacing site in drivers rear-view mirrors. Large, modern quad headlamps, housed in black, add to Avenger's intimidating glare. The crosshair grille on the SXT and R/T model is chrome with a black texture, which accentuates the vehicle's serious, almost sinister appearance. Bold, graphic design elements, which set the new 2008 Dodge Avenger's exterior design apart from the competition, also are evident throughout the vehicle's spacious interior.

The instrument panel top pad feature a Franklin grain with low-gloss finish to match the defroster grille, driver cubby and Dodge logo on the passenger side surrounds. From the cluster bezel to climate control knobs, circles are a primary graphic element repeated throughout the Dodge Avenger's interior.
Taking a cue from the Dodge Ram, the Avenger's center stack features a V-like ram's horn shape that surrounds the gated shifter bezel and serves as a design focal point. On vehicles equipped with the UConnect® Hands-free Communication System, phone buttons are packaged in the radio control head for easy access and a clean, streamlined appearance.
Unique in the mid-size segment, Dodge Avenger features Chill Zone, a cooled beverage storage bin that is standard on all Avenger models. Housed in the passenger side upper instrument panel, the bin can hold and chill as many as four 12-oz. beverage cans.
The Avenger's center floor console features dual storage bins and a sliding armrest that moves 3 inches to provide a comfortable seating position for all drivers. An additional storage slot fits a cell phone, PDA or MP3 player, which can be plugged into the outlet.
All of Dodge Avenger's doors include door map pocket inserts. The rear doors add a bottle holder for added convenience. The back of the driver's seat features a pocket for storing maps, papers or magazines. Standard 60/40 fold-flat rear seats make room for more gear, and an available fold-flat passenger seat creates a table-like surface that enhances Avenger's versatile interior.
Dodge Avenger's interior provides comfortable seating for the driver and as many as four passengers. Drivers sit 2.5 inches higher than they did in Dodge's previous mid-size sedan, giving them a command-of-the-road seating position. The interior cabin also is extremely spacious with 100.9 cu. ft., which is an additional 7 cubic feet of interior passenger volume compared with the vehicle it replaces. There are 2.5 inches more headroom, 1.2 inches more shoulder room and an inch more hip room in the front seat. Luggage volume in the trunk is a competitive 13.35 cubic feet.
Dodge Avenger buyers can choose from three different interior upholstery options: Evolution/Wallace cloth (standard on the SE model); easy-clean YES Essentials® Canyons/Racine premium cloth (standard on SXT and R/T models); and two-tone Radar perforated leather inserts with Sutton vinyl (available on Avenger SXT and R/T models). YES Essentials is unique to the Chrysler Group in the mid-size sedan market. This anti-microbial and anti-static seat fabric repels and releases soil to maintain a like-new appearance. Spills remain on the surface of the fabric, making it extremely easy to clean, keeping Avenger's interior free from stains and odors.
All 2008 Dodge Avenger models feature a two-tone interior theme of dark and lighter shades Dark Khaki or Slate Gray, which gives it a spacious appearance. The Dodge Avenger R/T features high-contrast Slate Gray/Light Slate Gray or Dark Slate Gray/Light Graystone interior.
Dodge Avenger's available interior accents include Alloy Silver and bright chrome for an upscale appearance and sense of craftsmanship. All models include bright chrome door lock knobs and bright chrome rings on the climate controls. The Avenger R/T adds a bright chrome cluster bezel and horn pad strip.

"Avenger proves that a mid-size sedan can deliver quality, reliability, a quiet, comfortable ride, 30 miles per gallon on the highway (32 mpg based on 2007 EPA fuel economy standards), a combination of class-leading safety features and innovative technologies, and also be fun to drive."
The front-wheel-drive 2008 Dodge Avenger is built on the Chrysler Group's new D-segment mid-size car platform. It features a four-wheel independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and a multi-link rear suspension. Front and rear suspension crossmembers are isolated to the body to create a quiet ride, with less road noise vibration and harshness (NVH) than previous models.
Anticipating Slip Before it Happens
For the first time in the mid-size segment, Dodge is offering a Dodge Avenger R/T AWD model with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine (late availability). The all-new Dodge Avenger R/T's all-wheel-drive system requires no driver input or control. Under most driving conditions, it is passive, and power is transmitted solely to the front wheels. However, when driving conditions get dicey and extra traction is needed, Avenger's AWD system anticipates slip by responding to pedal position and transfers power to the rear wheels. The system contributes to good fuel economy by operating only on demand, thereby minimizing power-robbing friction and inertia. Avenger's Electronically Controlled Coupling (ECC) AWD system is easier to calibrate, more flexible, more precise and less costly than viscous-coupling, Torsen® or gerotor systems.
"Unlike all-wheel-drive systems that rely on pumps or viscous fluids to transfer torque, the Avenger system requires no front-to-rear slippage for activation," said Dennis Krozek, Chief Engineer Dodge Avenger. "This allows the system to transfer torque in response to accelerator pedal position."
If the driver, via the pedal, is asking for a lot of power, the system immediately starts clamping the ECC, transferring a high percentage of power to the rear wheels. Power is transmitted to all four wheels, which helps prevent the front wheels from slipping.
Avenger's AWD system also uses feedback from wheel-speed sensors to determine how much torque to transfer to the rear wheels. If the Avenger's front wheels start to slip on ice, but the rear wheels are on dry pavement, the AWD system tells the ECC to start clamping and sends even more torque to the rear wheels to minimize slippage and get the vehicle moving.
The ECC system also knows when to modulate the amount of power sent to the rear wheels. If the vehicle is traveling at highway speeds and starts to hydroplane, the system sends very little power to the rear wheels because the ECC knows the rear wheels don't need a lot of power in that situation.
"While other automakers limit AWD to helping aid traction or provide off-road capability, Avenger's all-wheel drive system also is used to influence vehicle dynamics," Krozek added. "We've calibrated the Electronic Control Module so that it controls torque to the rear wheels for improved handling in the 25-65 mph range."
When traveling faster than 25 mph, Dodge Avenger's AWD system sends torque to the rear wheels when cornering with the throttle open to make the car turn more easily, which makes the handling more neutral. This is more readily accomplished with Avenger's ECC than with viscous-coupling or gerotor systems that require some degree of front-to-rear slip to transfer torque to the rear wheels. At speeds greater than 53 mph, the control strategy provides minimal torque to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions to provide better fuel economy.
For the U.S. market, ESP with Traction Control is available on Avenger SXT and R/T models and standard on the Avenger R/T AWD model. Avenger's AWD electronic control module interfaces with ESP and Traction Control systems, allowing the ESP system to use the ECC to help gain control of the vehicle, reducing the amount of torque that the ECC transmits to the rear wheels.
Powertrains Pack Powerful Punch
2008 Dodge Avenger vehicles sold in the United States are available with three engine options that are designed to meet the needs of the diverse mid-size sedan buyer: a new fuel-efficient 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine, a flex-fuel vehicle (FFV) 2.7-liter V-6 engine that can run on E-85 and an available 3.5-liter V-6 engine coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle with Auto Stick that provides 0-60 mph performance to rival the best in the mid-size car class.
Highly fluctuating gas prices have made fuel economy a high-priority for many car buyers, and the all-new Dodge Avenger features engine options that deliver class-leading fuel economy. Dodge Avenger SE and SXT models feature a standard 2.4-liter World Engine that provides fuel economy in the city of 21 mpg (24 mpg based on 2007 EPA fuel economy standards) and 30 mpg on the highway (32 mpg based on 2007 EPA fuel economy standards), as well as solid, quiet performance. Avenger's 2.4-liter World Engine features dual variable valve timing (VVT), intake manifold flow control valves, acoustic cylinder head covers, dual counter-rotating balance shafts and an acoustic oil pan. Mated to a four-speed automatic transaxle, it produces best-in-class horsepower of 173 horsepower (129 kW) and 166 lb.-ft. (225 Nm) of torque, providing a 15 percent increase in horsepower (173 hp vs. 150 hp) and an 8 percent improvement in fuel economy compared with the 2.4-liter engine that was available in the previous model.
Avenger SXT also features an available 2.7-liter V-6 engine, which produces 189 horsepower (141 kW) and 191 lb.-ft. of torque (259 Nm) and delivers 27 mpg on the highway (30 mpg based on 2007 EPA standards), providing value- and performance-conscious consumers the power of a V-6 engine with a price that compares with the competitions' four-cylinder engines. It also provides more low-end torque (at an rpm 850 lower) compared with the 2.7-liter engine it replaces. The Avenger's 2.7-liter engine with flexible fuel capability has the ability to operate effectively on any blend of gasoline and fuel-grade ethanol up to E-85.
Dodge Avenger R/T and R/T AWD vehicles sold in the United States feature a standard a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 235 horsepower (175 kW) and 232 lb.-ft. (315 Nm) of torque coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle that comes standard with Auto Stick. The combination of the upgraded 3.5-liter V-6 engine coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle delivers excellent performance and fuel efficiency, as well as quiet operation.
New Six-speed Transaxle Provides Quick Acceleration, Quiet Ride
The 2008 Dodge Avenger R/T and R/T AWD models also offer the Chrysler Group's new six-speed automatic transaxle, which provides quicker standing-start acceleration than a four- or five-speed transaxle because of a numerically higher first gear ratio. A more robust differential with increased torque capacity enhances launch performance by requiring less torque management, electronically limiting the torque that is available during the initial stages of standing-start acceleration. Smaller steps between ratios also make for a smoother, quieter ride, as the engine speed doesn change as often with each shift. In addition, more ratio choices, more appropriate ratios for quicker acceleration and a lower overall top gear ratio provide a quiet ride and improved fuel economy at highway speeds.
Structural Engineering
Advanced Structural Technologies and Sound-deadening Materials Form 2008 Dodge Avenger's Safe, Solid Structure and Minimize Noise, Vibration and Ride Harshness
High-strength steel reduces Avenger's weight, improves impact performance
Dual-phase steel manages impact energy more effectively
Sealants and sound-deadening materials create whisper quiet driving experience and reduce noise, vibration and ride harshness
The all-new 2008 Dodge Avenger features many advanced steel technologies that reduce weight and unwanted noise, while creating a safe, solid, stiff structure that provides excellent impact performance, a smooth ride and solid handling. Top that with world-class levels of sealants and sound-deadening materials, and the Dodge Avenger offers an exceptionally quiet ride, void of road, wind and powertrain noise.
"Through the extensive use of sealants and sound-deadening materials, we've created a nice, quiet cabin, which makes for a pleasant environment for drivers to listen to Avenger's radio or the available MyGIGA Multimedia Navigation system," said Larry Lyons, Vice President Front-wheel-drive Product Team.
High-strength Steel Forms a Protective Shell Around Vehicle Occupants
Avenger has among the highest combined percentages of high-strength and ultra-high-strength, hot-stamped steel among production-volume vehicles on U.S. roads today. The higher weight-to-strength ratio of high-strength steel gave engineers the ability to reduce Avenger's overall weight, while also developing a safety cage that keeps occupants protected.
"By mass, Avenger's body structure is a combined 30 percent mix of hot-stamped and high-strength steel," said Dennis Krozek, Chief Engineer Dodge Avenger. "Hot-stamped steel A-pillars, B-pillars and roof-rail reinforcements reduce upper body weight by 30 lbs. compared with traditional steel."
In addition to high-strength and hot-stamped steel, Avenger also features dual-phase steel in the rear rails, tunnel reinforcement and sills. Dual-phase steel allows these components to handle greater loads than conventional steels, which helps them manage impact energy more effectively, while still being relatively easy to stamp and control dimensionally. In addition, in the event of a high-speed front impact, the design of the structure and the properties of the steel combine to protect the occupants by absorbing the impact energy in a controlled manner.
Dual-phase and high-strength steels are strategically located in the Avenger's sill construction providing an efficient cross-section-to-weight balance. As many as four layers of metal (including dual-phase and high-strength steel of various shapes and sizes) provide optimum impact energy management. Dodge Avenger also features very large sills, which make the body structure substantially stiffer than its predecessor in bend and torsion.
Sealants, Sound Deadening Materials and Fine-tuning Reduce Noise, Vibration and Harshness
The all-new Dodge Avenger's use of structural adhesives is world-class. Components joined with new structural adhesives improve stiffness and impact energy management compared with other joining methods such as spot welding and laser welding.
Tougher, more elastic adhesives add strength to Avenger's joints during an impact. Avenger's stronger joints create a more rigid structure and minimize noise, vibration and harshness in the passenger compartment, giving the Avenger more body stiffness, which contributes to its excellent ride quality, comfort and interior quietness.
The Avenger's overall torsion and bending stiffness give it excellent on-road performance and a solid feel and ride comfort, while allowing the body to remain tight and quiet. Avenger's front-wheel-drive architecture and the three-box vehicle design contribute to a torsional (twist) stiffness of 17,925 ft.-lb./degree (32.2 Hz) and a bending stiffness of 66,703 lb./in. (26.3 Hz), which is 1.7 times stiffer in torsion and 1.6 times stiffer in bending than the vehicle it replaces.
The Avenger also benefits from extensive application of pumpable and moldable sealers in the upper body to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) characteristics. Seam sealing is applied both inside and outside the body, instead of just inside of the body. Avenger's doors are triple sealed to reduce wind noise. A continuous, one-piece channel-type weather strip mounted in a three-piece roll-formed channel in the upper door frames seals both sides of the windows to prevent wind noise and water leaks.
Chrysler Group engineers also extensively tuned the new Avenger and added many special treatments to alleviate road, wind and powertrain noise and vehicle shake, including:
All engines include acoustic engine covers to absorb and dampen noise
Powertrain and body mounts are tuned to minimize shake, as well as improve instrument panel stiffness, steering column-to-instrument panel stiffness and instrument-panel-to-body stiffness
The air induction system, accessory drive mounting and exhaust system are tuned to reduce powertrain noise and improve sound quality
The A-pillar and exterior mirrors were aerodynamically developed in the wind tunnel to reduce wind noise
An NVH package isolates the passenger compartment from powertrain inputs and other sources of NVH
Multiple rib-like indentations in the floor pan and applied mastic sound-deadening material reduce boom and add to Avenger's extremely quiet ride
Expandable Polyurethane Foam (PUR®) injected into cavities in the body structure prevents noise from being transmitted to the passenger compartment
Every hole and cavity is covered with a plug or patch
Bituminous mastic pads are bonded to the floor pan to dampen vibration and act as a noise barrier
Dampers on the dash and the rear wheel houses consisting of a layer of mastic between two layers of metal are adhesive bonded to flat surfaces that might otherwise resonate

Among more than 30 safety and security features, the all-new 2008 Dodge Avenger features standard advanced multi-stage front air bags, side-curtain air bags and front-seat-mounted side air bags, and available anti-lock brakes (ABS), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and a first for Dodge in the mid-size segment, all-wheel-drive capability (late availability).
Safety Systems Square Up Against Slick Surfaces
Avenger’s all-wheel-drive system works on demand, driving only the front wheels until power to the rear wheels is needed. All-wheel drive is also used on dry pavement between speeds of 25 and 65 mph to enhance handling during performance driving. This system provides added traction on snow, ice and other low-traction surfaces without having to be switched on and off.
Avenger’s available ABS system helps the driver keep the vehicle under control by preventing wheel lock-up when the driver brakes on slippery surfaces. Avenger also offers ESP packaged with Brake Assist and Traction Control. ESP is an option on Avenger SXT and R/T models and standard on the R/T AWD model. This stability system helps the Avenger driver maintain stability and does everything within the limits of vehicle traction to keep Avenger on course. ESP also helps maintain forward traction by constantly monitoring wheel speed sensor signals. If there is any indication of slippage, ESP engages, applying the brakes and, if necessary, closing the throttle to maintain traction. Avenger’s ESP system works in slick driving conditions, including wet, snowy, icy, sandy or gravel roads, as well as on hot, dry pavement where a thin layer of oil can form, causing the surface to be slick.
“Studies have shown that in an emergency, the average driver will not apply the brakes hard enough or quick enough to achieve the minimum stopping distance,” said Dennis Krozek, Chief Engineer—Dodge Avenger. “Avenger’s Brake Assist overcomes this tendency by using the ESP system to instantly apply the maximum available pressure to the brakes.”
A pressure sensor in the ESP hydraulic module determines when the driver is making an emergency stop by measuring the rate at which the driver applies the brake. A high rate of pedal pressure application causes the ESP system to apply maximum hydraulic pressure to the brakes, stopping the vehicle as quickly as the available traction will allow.
Traction Control helps the Avenger maintain traction by applying the brakes, and in some cases, closing the throttle to minimize wheel spin during acceleration.
Class-leading Safety and Security Features
Advanced Multi-stage Front Air Bags Front-passenger air bags that use unique shape, venting, folding patterns, advanced inflators or a combination of these four technologies to position and inflate the restraint properly for a belted passenger while also meeting federal safety requirements for out-of-position, small occupants and rear-facing infant seats. Occupants are advised to always sit properly in their seats with the seat belt fastened. Children 12 and younger should always be seated in a back seat, correctly using an infant- or child-restraint system, or have the seat belt positioned correctly for their age and weight.
All-speed Traction Control (included with ESP) senses drive-wheel slip and applies individual brakes to a slipping wheel(s), and can reduce excess engine power until traction is regained

Manufacturing
Chrysler Group Launches Production of All-new 2008 Dodge Avenger at Sterling Heights (Mich.) Assembly Plant
Chrysler Group’s Sterling Heights (Mich.) Assembly Plant adds third vehicle
New Dodge Avenger builds on Chrysler Group's Flexible Manufacturing Strategy, which allows multiple products to be produced at one plant
Call it a hat trick. The all-new 2008 Dodge Avenger is the third vehicle to be built on the assembly line at the Sterling Heights (Mich.) Assembly Plant (SHAP), joining the Chrysler Sebring Sedan and Chrysler Sebring Convertible. The Dodge Avenger is the third example of the Chrysler Group’s expanding Flexible Manufacturing Strategy (FMS) at SHAP, which both allows the company to bring new vehicles to market more quickly and gives assembly plants the ability to manufacture multiple products on one assembly line. Production of the Dodge Avenger follows an extensive retooling, which included multiple plant upgrades that improved quality, productivity and worker ergonomics. SHAP is now able to vary the production mix between three product models and pilot a fourth.
“We are now seeing the success of our $500 million dollar investment in SHAP and Sterling (Heights) Stamping Plant,” said Fred Goedtel, Vice President—Small/Premium/Family Vehicle Assembly. “The plant enhancements have made the facility both more flexible and efficient. The assembly operation now has the capability to build multiple upper bodies and multiple vehicle families or architectures, which will allow for the flexibility to add new models or ‘cross-load’ models from other plants to better meet the dynamics of the market.”
Since the rollout of Chrysler Group's FMS in 2000, the process has been the template for Chrysler Group’s rolling plant modernization activities. Sterling Heights Assembly Plant and Sterling Stamping, along with Belvidere (Ill.) Assembly Plant, represent the current archetype of Chrysler Group’s flexibility capabilities.
“In addition, the Sterling Stamping Plant can weld and assemble more than one product on the same line. These new capabilities will support the company’s pursuit of product leadership by providing flexibility to efficiently manage increased distinction between the Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge brands,” said Goedtel.
The company invested $278 million at SHAP to overhaul the body shop and improve the paint shop and assembly areas, including installing new tooling and about 620 new welding and material handling robots.
The SHAP Trim, Chassis and Final areas received a new glass-installation cell, windshield decking, chassis-insertion loop system, fluid-fill equipment and roll-test machines. Each of these contributed favorably to the plant's overall productivity and efficiency efforts.
Flexible Manufacturing Strategy
Chrysler Group's FMS allows the company to produce a higher quality product faster and for a lower cost. In order to balance production with demand, the FMS approach allows the company to efficiently build lower-volume vehicles that take advantage of market niche, and to quickly shift production volumes between different models within a single plant or among multiple plants.
FMS is being implemented product by product and plant by plant across the Chrysler Group. New investment is introducing state-of-the-art technology to Chrysler Group plants, allowing the company to produce more than one vehicle on a production line and conduct rolling launches of new models. Additionally, Chrysler Group's workforce is becoming more flexible with the implementation of team concepts and an increased emphasis on supporting assembly line operators.
Robotics
At the core of the new Dodge Avenger manufacturing process the addition of 620 new robots in the body shop versus the vehicle-specific heavy tooling that was previously used. Only the robots' end effectors, or "hands," need to change in order to build the different models. That tool change is done automatically, within the time it takes to cycle from one vehicle to the next. A fourth model can also be piloted at the same time, helping reduce the time needed to make new-model changeovers.
Smart Manufacturing
A new workplace organizational model, coined “Smart Manufacturing,” is increasing the flexibility of the SHAP workforce, while fostering greater creativity and innovation from plant employees. This model is being implemented throughout the Chrysler Group's Manufacturing organization in conjunction with the UAW. In addition to extensive training, the new workplace model promotes employee involvement in all facets of work station design and processing. These changes provide a better work environment for employees and give increased support to assembly line team members while improving safety, quality, delivery, cost and morale.
Sterling Heights Assembly Plant
Chrysler Group is the city of Sterling Heights’ second-largest employer and has more than 4,800 employees working in two plants. The 3 million square-foot Sterling Heights Assembly Plant occupies 286 acres. In total, the Chrysler Group provides $150 million in annual wages and more than $5 million in taxable income to the state of Michigan.
Sterling Heights Assembly Plant opened in 1953 as a jet engine factory. The plant was purchased by Chrysler Group in 1983. SHAP is home to United Auto Workers Locals 1700, 889 and 412. Sterling Stamping is 2.7 million square feet and employs 2,300 people. The plant is home to UAW Locals 1264, 889 and 412. The plant investment is just the latest in a long, cooperative partnership with the City of Sterling Heights.
