Specialists for attainable dreams
Volkswagen Individual GmbH builds cars with exclusive optional equipment as well as ready-built cars
Tailor-made solutions for all mobile avenues of society
The demand for individualized ready-built vehicles and exclusive equipment features is constantly growing. Some drivers only want uniquely-designed wheels or their iPod integrated into the standard Volkswagen sound system. Others dream of a refined interior with special leather or wooden inlays. And then there are a large number of others who dream of a car individualized to the core.
In order to be able to fulfill all these dreams in a highly flexible manner and deliver them in convincing quality, In February 2003 Volkswagen AG founded Volkswagen Individual GmbH headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. Ever since then, Volkswagen has been developing, manufacturing and marketing cars that come with a certain extra in terms of individuality, specialization and/or sportiness under the name of Volkswagen Individual. While at the same time under the roof of Volkswagen Individual high-end technical equipment and special-purpose vehicles for government use (e.g. police) and rescue units (e.g. ambulances) are developed and produced.
For almost all series of the high volume brand and in addition to already existing programs, Volkswagen Individual GmbH offers high-end refinement when it comes to design oriented optional equipment or innovative upgrades. Volkswagen Individual has centered its program into three business areas, “Individual”, “R” and “Product Impulses”, and covers everything from high end components to ready-built vehicles with especially elegant or sporty optional equipment direct from the factory up to implementing totally new vehicle designs. Additionally, Volkswagen Individual GmbH’s staff of 207 manufactures built-to-order vehicles, the Exclusives. The maximum range of feasibility can be found in the “Phaeton Lounge” exclusive, a unique stretch version of the luxury class series model. All projects are conducted in close cooperation with Volkswagen's R&D and with Volkswagen Design.
It is quite remarkable that through Volkswagen Individual all Volkswagen customers have access to an upgrade program otherwise only offered by luxury brands such as Bentley. Assistance and consulting is offered through Volkswagen dealers and through an independent service-hotline. No matter if a Golf customer is selecting his wheels or a Touareg owner his individualized V10 TDI they can always expect a high level of expertise and proficiency.
The product brands of Volkswagen Individual in detail
Volkswagen Individual
The VW subsidiary designs and sells both exclusive models as well as individualization options direct from the factory under the “Individual” label. The selection ranges from special exterior paints, design-oriented attached parts, wheels and refined applications and multi-colored leather equipment in the interior to entertainment systems.
Thus far, the Volkswagen Golf, Eos, Passat, Passat Variant and Touareg are the ready-built vehicles being offered as "Individual Models". In addition, individual elements of the Individual program can be combined with one other. This way, customers that don't opt for a ready-built Individual car have extensive options for fine tuning their car. Options include, for example, design packages with exclusive leather interior equipment, special body paints or modern entertainment systems.
The Volkswagen specialists offer tailor-made "individualization" for the Golf, Golf Plus, Jetta, Touran, Eos, Sharan, Passat, Passat Variant, Touareg and Phaeton. At the top of the service offering under the "Individual" label are the partially handmade individual items, the Exclusives.
R models
Already with the first Golf R32, still based on the fourth Generation of the bestselling Golf, Volkswagen satisfied the demand for an exclusively equipped, top of the line Golf with especially high-performance engines. 14,000 units were sold, far more than originally planned. On the foundation of this success the idea arose to develop a whole series of R models in the future – a typical job for Volkswagen Individual GmbH. The second Golf R32, 184 kW / 250 hp, equipped with 4Motion four-wheel drive as standard equipment, made its start in 2005. The new Passat R36, which debuted at the Essen Motor Show 2006, also captivates with confident understatement. The most powerful Passat of all times has a 3.6 liter six-cylinder direct injection gasoline engine (3.6 FSI) with 220 kW / 300 hp.
The special tasks of Volkswagen Individual in detail
Product Impulses
With a high level of creativity Volkswagen Individual GmbH carries out complete vehicle projects on a regular basis. Innovation and a lifestyle orientation stand out in these models. Examples of these are special series such as the Golf GTI Edition 30 and the Polo GTI Cup Edition. In addition, the specialists also develop new vehicle ideas, the crossover models, for instance. Crossover is a category that combines the best of two worlds. They are cars that fill market niches or create new ones. Here Volkswagen Individual has also developed a complete program, which under the label with the extra "Cross" designation merges two segments into a new one. The first model of this new series is the CrossPolo, introduced in 2005. The smart four-door combines the advantages of a compact car with the style elements of an SUV and thus lends itself as a practical and lifestyle-oriented all-round talent. Another example is the CrossGolf, which Volkswagen premiered at the Paris Auto Show 2006. It merges the can-do qualities of a compact SUV with the versatility of a small MPV into a new crossover model.
Development services
As an R&D partner Volkswagen Individual creates ready-built special-purpose vehicles (e. g. police cars and ambulances) and equipment components for special-purpose vehicles (e. g. cars for handicapped and driving school cars). Another field of activity with increasing relevance in times of constantly rising gas prices is the development of alternative propulsion systems. In taking that into account, the company is banking on natural gas as an especially economical and low emission source of energy. The latest examples here are the Touran EcoFuel and Caddy Life EcoFuel.
The Golf and Passat model range sports cars
New Passat R36 with 220 kW / 300 hp to debut in Summer 2007
250 hp Golf R32 attains a top speed of 250 km/h
The program of especially high-performance R models is celebrating a new addition to the family: the new Passat R36 is coming out in Summer 2007. As a sedan and Variant. The new Passat R36 was conceived by Volkswagen Individual, the specialist team for very fast and/or special models. Following the Golf R32, the Passat R36 will be the second series version to be debuting under the “R” sports label. The “R32” label already represents a top-selling model; the first Golf R32 (177 kW / 241 hp,) based on the fourth Golf generation and introduced in midsummer 2002, took off better than expected in every way; 14,000 cars were sold. On the foundation of this success the idea arose to develop a whole series of R models in the future. In Autumn 2005 the second Golf R32, 184 kW / 250 hp, equipped with 4MOTION four-wheel drive as standard equipment, was introduced. It was also a terrific success. And it continues to sell well today. Starting in Summer 2007 the “R36” will show how sporty a Passat sedan and a Passat Variant can be.
Passat R36:
The fastest of all Volkswagens in terms of Acceleration
Visually, with a whole range of specific features the new Passat R36 shows that it is the most dynamic model of the globally successful series.
Special features of the front section: an R-specific bumper and a crest radiator grill in matte chrome finish. Also R-specific are the matte chrome dual fins of the upper radiator grill and the radiator air inlets in slatted look.
The rear of the Passat R36 sedan features a newly designed spoiler on the luggage compartment lid; in the case of the Passat Variant R36 a new roof edge spoiler provides additional downward force to the rear axle. Identical for both body versions: the chrome dual exhaust pipes. On the sides it is, among other things, the newly designed 18-inch “Omanyt” alloy wheels and wheel arch extensions in car color that underscore the dynamic character of the Passat R36.

Similar to the Golf R32, Volkswagen Individual designed interior equipment especially for the sportiest Passat. The instruments and middle console are finished in “Engine Spin” décor. The leather steering wheel in R design is especially slip-proof; it features an R36 logo in the lower spokes. The pedals have a stainless steel finish. In addition, as standard equipment the Passat R36 will be delivered with a sport seating system together with electric 12-way adjustment, R36 door sill trims, new instrument lighting (white illumination) and an automatic transmission selector lever in aluminum look. A special highlight is the optionally available 14-way leather seating system with seats that are electropneumatically adjustable on the sides, affording optimal side support for drivers and passengers of different sizes.

Golf R32:
Top-Notch athlete with comfort reserves
The combination of standard four-wheel drive (4MOTION), 184 kW / 250 hp, from 0-100 km/h in 6.2 seconds (via DSG transmission) and maximum speed of 250 km/h make the Golf R32 one of the most top-notch athletes in the compact car class. Ideally balanced for fast laps on a closed course, the comfortable Golf R32 also lends itself to long distances between appointments.
Centerpiece of the top Golf is a four-valve, six-cylinder engine, 3,189 cm3 large and 320 Nm strong. Its sonorous sound matches its superior display of power. From every torque range the engine pushes the Golf forwards as if there were no air resistance. Performance to weight ratio: 6 kg/hp.
With V6 propulsion and 4MOTION traction the engineers have brought the sport chassis into perfect harmony. While the GTI chassis is placed 15 millimeter lower than the series, the “R32” is 20 millimeter lower. The chief attraction is: it still offers ample comfort and demonstrates very agile handling in combination with the four-wheel drive.
Whoever goes for a Golf R32 is showing his colors – preferably the exclusive “Deep Blue Pearl Effect” paint. The fact is: As already done with the Golf GTI, a completely uniquely designed radiator grill was developed for the Golf R32, whose design and aluminum look distinguishes it from the front section of the GTI. Especially in the lower segment, the grill framed by bi-xenon headlights displays a strong modulation in the style of a classic sports car. An additional “R32” element in the upper area of the radiator: the double diagonal fins also kept in an aluminum look. Two additional air vents on the side of the radiator grill complement the supply of fresh air. In contrast to all other Golfs, the “R32” also has bumpers painted entirely in the car color in the lower third and with an airflow element on each side, whose shape is picked up in the side sill and rear bumper.
In the rear of the body the Golf R32 also displays a bumper painted entirely in car color. Only the segment in the middle part styled like a diffuser is black. Here centrally and strikingly integrated next to each other: two round exhaust pipe ends made of polished stainless steel.
When viewed from the side the 18-inch “Zolder” alloy wheels stand out. Their total of 20 spokes continues the design theme of the first R32 wheel. Behind these the disk brake calipers painted blue, which enclose 345 mm in front and 310 mm disks in back when hitting the brake pedal. As an extension of the roof, a harmoniously integrated roof spoiler that presses the Golf R32 to the street with aerodynamic force connects to the powerfully drawn C-pillar typical for this series for the past three decades.
The sporty-exclusive character of the top model is also reflected in the interior. Standard "top sport seats" with integrated R logo – or optionally and exclusively available “motor sport bucket seats” specially developed for the Golf R32 provide a successful synthesis of good support and high-class long distance comfort. Other striking interior details: The “Engine Spin” metallic applications (with a circle-shaped pattern), a uniquely designed gearshift knob and a sport steering wheel (leather/perforated leather) with integrated metal R logo.
The complete equipment of the “R32” includes, among other things, air conditioning (Climatronic), on board computer (MFA), RCD 300 radio CD system, alarm system, rain sensor, coming-home function/ leaving-home light function, multifunctional leather steering wheel with shift buttons (for DSG), tire monitoring display, blue thermal glass, bi-xenon headlights, six airbags and ESP. Equipped with its 20 millimeter lower sport chassis, the Golf R32 is full and wide tracked on the street. Making a decisive contribution to this are the 18-inch alloy wheels specially developed for the new top model with 225/40 tires, approved for speeds up to 300 km/h.
Dynamic equipment packages from Volkswagen Individual
New in Spring 2007: R line options upgrade interior and exterior
R line packages for the Golf, Touran, Passat and Touareg
Starting in Spring 2007 Volkswagen Individual will be launching the newly designed R Line packages for the Golf, Touran, Passat and Touareg model ranges. The other global brands will then follow step-by-step. So far “R” has exclusively stood for high-performance cars such as the Golf R32 (250 hp), or the new Passat R36 (300 hp). Thanks to the new R line options now for the first time exterior and interior equipment can be exclusively individualized for sportiness, for the most part independently from the type of engine. The idea behind it: all R line products take up on the characteristic design elements that also distinguish the Golf R32 or the Passat R36. The entry into the world of sporty Volkswagens is becoming significantly more economical. In their implementation the differentiation to these top-notch athletes is however large enough that the independence and exclusivity of each model is maintained.
R line for the Golf
Volkswagen Individual has designed three different R line options for the Golf. For the first upgrade stage starting with the Golf Trendline an R line package is available consisting of sporty 17-inch alloy wheels (of type “Omanyt”) with wide tires, a sport leather steering wheel (three spokes, perforated leather, R32-style steering wheel clip), parking brake lever and gearshift knob in leather, R-style pedals, door trims and an identifying R logo on the outside of the car.
Volkswagen put together the “Plus” R line package for the next upgrade level. In addition to the features in the first package, here top sport seats in front (“Monte Carlo” fabric with R embossed headrests) refine the interior. The “Plus” package also enters the scene with its own “Engine Spin dark” décor.
New car buyers can order the “Exterior” R line package separately from these two packages. The package adds a dynamic look to the already powerfully designed Golf. These are the ingredients: the protective radiator grill in dual fin design with a matte chrome surface familiar from the R32, air inlets in slatted look, 17-inch alloy wheels (of type “Omanyt”), roof edge spoiler, painted spoiler lower sections (front and back), a black diffusor, R logos on the sides of the front fenders and interior door trim.
For all Golf R line packages Volkswagen Individual offers optional 18-inch alloy wheels including sport chassis. “Vienna” leather equipment and a sporty dark rooflining can also be added to the “Plus” package.
These three R line packages – with some car-specific variations – are also being offered by Volkswagen Individual for the Touran (Trendline and Highline), Passat and Passat Variant (Sportline and Highline) and Touareg model series. All of them are also related, among other things, by the R line “Omanyt” wheels, developed for different sizes (up to 20 inches for the Touareg) and loads. R line versions for other Volkswagen models are also entirely conceivable. The R line equipment packages for the Touran, Passat and Touareg in detail:
R line for the Touran
Volkswagen Individual showed an R line equipment program for the latest generation Touran just now introduced at the Essen Motor Show. Similar to the Golf, new car buyers can also directly customize the configuration of the Touran (in Trendline and Highline versions) with the R line package. This is available for all engine types (with the exception of the Touran EcoFuel and Touran TDI with 66 kW).
With the R line package the Touran is enhanced with 18-inch alloy wheels (of type Omanyt), a sport chassis, a multifunctional leather steering wheel (with R line logo in the vertical spoke), R pedals, R design door trim and matching R line logo on the outside. In addition, the package includes an R line front section with painted bumper, radiator grill with chrome dual fins and a rear bumper that is also painted. R line logos on the right and left fenders indicate this equipment line.
R line for the Passat
The Passat is among the most successful cars in the world. This Volkswagen (as a sedan and Variant) will also be available with the new R line package in the course of the coming year. Passat buyers choosing the “Sportline” and “Highline” equipment lines can also go for an “Interior” or “Exterior” package (available for all engine types).
The “Interior” R line package includes top sport seats (front) with electric 12-way adjustment including electrically adjustable lumbar support and a memory function on the driver’s side (“Monte Carlo” fabric design, black on seating strip with R logo in the backrests of the front seats, “Highline” in leather equipment). Also included in this package are décor inlays in “Engine Spin dark” style, a multifunctional leather steering wheel with R logo and control buttons for the optional DSG direct shift gearbox, the Plus multifunctional display, a gearshift knob in leather and R design pedal caps. As with all other models this equipment also includes R line door trims and 17-inch alloy wheels (of type “Omanyt”).
The “Exterior” R line package, available separately or in addition, includes custom bumpers (completely in car color plus black diffusor in back), crest radiator grill with dual fin design, sport chassis, R line interior door trim and 17-inch alloy wheels (of type “Omanyt”), developed exclusively for the R line versions. The V6 versions come standard equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels of the same type (optionally available for all other Passat R line versions). The protective radiator grill is finished in matte chrome.
R line for the Touareg
The new Touareg generation will be offered with three R line packages in the future. They can be ordered for all engine versions starting from 165 kW (V6 TDI). In the first upgrade stage here the R line program offers extras including 20-inch alloy wheels (of type “Omanyt”), sport chassis, a four-spoke leather steering wheel, selector lever with R line logo, interior door trim in front with R line logo and pedal caps in R line design. Volkswagen offers “Casablanca” 20-inch alloy wheels as an alternative.
The “Plus” R line package provides an even higher degree of customization. It additionally includes a sport seating system in leather (“Nappa”) with R line logos in the front headrests as well as very high-quality R line “Engine Spin dark” interior applications.
The “Exterior” R line package is also available for the Touareg. Included in this program of refinement are a matte chrome finished radiator grill with dual fins, custom bumpers also with front transverse web and rear diffusor in chrome (matte) design, special side sills and interior door trim as well as 20-inch alloy wheels of type “Omanyt”.
Unique cars with a very personal touch
The Exclusive models of the Golf, Eos, Passat and Touareg model series
Range of Individual ready-built vehicles is constantly growing
Individuality direct from the factory – a contradiction? No, at least not at Volkswagen. Firstly, Europe's largest car maker offers almost countless possibilities to configure its new cars via the range of equipment options for its models. Secondly, there are Volkswagen Individual models –namely the Golf Individual, the Passat Individual, the Passat Variant Individual, the new Eos Individual and the Touareg Individual. An overview:
Gold Individual:
Europe's number one in its most refined form
The Golf Individual is tailored to the growing number of customers that want the comfort and performance of larger vehicles in the car body format of the lower mid-class. On request this Golf can be painted in the new Individual color "Sommelier Red Pearl Effect"; it is available exclusively in combination with the Individual edition. Alternately, the Golf Individual can be ordered in "Shadow Blue", "Reflex Silver" (each of them metallic) and "Black Magic" (Pearl Effect). Incidentally, the roof edge spoiler and lower sections of the bumpers are also painted in the body color. As for motors, Volkswagen Individual among others employs the 1.6 FSI (85 kW/115 hp) and 2.0 FSI (110 kW/150 hp) gasoline engines as well as the 1.9 TDI (77 kW/105 hp) and 2.0 TDI (103 kW/140 hp) Turbodiesel engines. All in all fifteen motors are available.
The equipment of the Golf Individual is based on the Sportline version. 225 wide tires and gloss finished 18-inch alloy wheels set a visual highlight and optimize road holding. In the interior the top sport seats familiar from the GTI fit the dynamic character. In this case they however come standard with leather upholstery; the center strips are made of exclusive perforated leather which discretely lets the dark red ("Grenadine") or gray ("Art Gray") textile shine through. The door insets as well as the fabric borders of the foot mats are kept in the same shade of color. The equipment of the exclusive Golf is rounded off by Individual interior door trim and dashboard applications in "Mineral" aluminum design.
Passat and Passat Variant Individual
Refined in black and in an exclusive interior
The Passat Individual is offered as a sedan and Variant. On the exterior the two most exclusive versions of the successful series can be recognized by the choice of tinted chrome applications and the specifically designed 18-inch alloy wheels. On the inside the sporty elegant appearance is rounded off by the dual colored leather equipment (in "Nappa Black/Sensitive Snow Beige" or "Nappa Black/Sensitive Teak").
The customer can generally chose among the classic light or sporty dark chrome style for the radiator grill, window borders and decorative trim on the doors, rear bumpers and model logo. The dark chrome used for the first time by Volkswagen to refine a car is produced in a special coating process, in which the car parts are coated with a metallic layer.
The result: a discreet shiny, ultra hard surface that is extremely scratch resistant and resilient to wear and tear and corrosion. Together with the 15 millimeter lowered sport chassis, the anthracite lacquered 18-inch “Chicago” alloy wheels in five double spoke design with glossy finished surface give the Passat Individual an especially dynamic touch. Optionally and at no extra charge, both models are available with the “Samarkand” alloy wheel. The wheel arch trim is painted black, the side windows in the rear and the rear window are tinted to match.
In the interior not only are the seats in "Sensitive" leather kept in two tone but the door side panels are as well. The decorative seams on the three spoke multifunctional steering wheel and the gearshift sleeve as well as the borders of the textile floor mats match each color combination. Décor inlays of dark brushed aluminum underscore the individual character of the interior.
Apart from the standard equipment of the Passat Sportline, the Passat Individual is additionally equipped with fog lights, heatable window wash spray nozzles, an individually adjustable heatable seat for front and back seats as well as two zone air conditioning. The offer is rounded off by a radio CD system with four speakers in front. If the Rear Seat Entertainment Systems (RSE) also developed by Volkswagen is on board there are either one or two LCD screens (depending on the model version) integrated into the front headrests. Apart from DVD's, the accompanying player can also play music CDs. In addition, an interface is provided for connecting external devices to the RSE such as games consoles, MP3 players and camcorders.
Eos Individual:
Exclusive version of the 365-day convertible
Its unique roof concept turns the Eos into a convertible for 365 days of the year. The most exclusive way to drive an Eos is offered by the Volkswagen Individual program. In fact direct from the factory. The range of individualization options attains a level that is usually offered only by luxury brands such as Bentley. The exterior signs of the Eos Individual are 18-inch alloy wheels. The customer can choose from the “Veracruz”, “Chicago” and “Samarkand” wheel types.
The seats of the Eos Individual are upholstered in dual tone Nappa leather. A contrast to the base color "Black" – which was also selected for the entire trim – is the center strips in "Corn Silk Beige" and the light colored piping. The sport leather steering wheel as well as the gearshift sleeve and parking brake lever are adorned with light, decorative seams. The outside edges of the textile floor mats are also kept in "Corn Silk Beige". A visual highlight is set by the décor inlays covered in black piano lacquer.
Six exclusive body colors are available for the Eos Individual: the “Silver Essence”, “Wheat Beige” and “Midnight Blue” metallic shades, the “Deep Black” and “Island Gray“ pearl effect paint as well as the especially sporty alternative “Red Pepper”. The spectrum of engines ranges from the Turbodiesel 2.0 TDI (103 kW/140 hp) to the 3.2-liter six-cylinder gasoline-powered engine with an impressive 184 kW/250 hp and DSG direct shift gearbox as part of standard equipment.
Touareg Individual:
Off road masterpiece
The program of the independently designed ready-built models based on the successful off road specialist continues with the Touareg Individual. In the interior two-tone leather equipment is used for the seats, parts of the door panels and the piping of the headrests. The comfort seats of the Touareg are refined by a leather combination of “Rodeo” and “Cricket” in “Dakota/Anthracite” color. “Makassar” hardwood applications fit stylishly into this picture. Special tuft velour floor mats (in R5 and V6) or pearl velour (in V8, V10 and W12) with edges matching the color of the seating center strips underscore the exclusive character of the Touareg interior. The stainless steel used in the area of doors and interior door trim sets a visual contrast to the natural materials. This interior door trim is adorned with the Individual logo and lettering – optionally illuminated or non-illuminated. The Individual logo is also embossed in the front headrests.
The Touareg Individual is delivered with 19-inch “Siena” alloy wheels in dual spoke design, with matching “Sterling silver” or “Titan silver” color. On request “Avignon” alloy wheels in 19-inch format and “Casablanca” alloy wheels in 20-inch size are also available. In addition, the Touareg Individual features chrome on the step tread on the rear bumper and the side window frames, usually available only for the top engine types. The radiator grill frame is kept in matte chrome. Matching this: the silver-colored roof railing.
The range of engines perfectly fits the superior character of the Touareg Individual and offers the customer a wide selection for finding the right engine suiting his personal needs. Three gasoline engines – the 3.2 V6 FSI with 206 kW / 280 hp, the 4.2 V8 with 228 kW / 310 hp and the 6.0 W12 with 331 kW / 450 hp – are pitted against three Turbodiesel engines. Their potential ranges from 128 kW / 174 hp with the 2.5 TDI and 165 kW / 225 hp to the burly 5.0 V10 TDI with 230 kW / 313 hp.
CrossPolo and CrossGolf: the best of two worlds
After the CrossPolo Volkswagen is launching the CrossGolf in 2007
Crossover cars combine the features of different segments
Crossover is the term used for a new category of cars combining the best of two worlds. They are cars that fill market niches or create new ones. Here Volkswagen Individual has also developed a program, which under the label with the extra "Cross" designation merges two segments into a new one. The latest model in this series is the CrossGolf, first premiered at the Paris Auto Show 2006.
CrossGolf:
Spacious sedan with attractive SUV feeling
The new CrossGolf forms the interface between an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) and an MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle), combining the advantages of a versatile and spacious interior with the can-do qualities of a light SUV in terms of the body. The front-wheel drive model – unrivaled in its class due to positioning and design – is based on the Golf Plus Sportline. And that’s why it features practical details such as a foldable back seat that can even be moved lengthwise, folding tables on the backs of the front seats and pigeonholes below, an elevated seating position and the basic four doors and large hatchback.
The new kid on the block features parallels to the SUV world on the outside. Especially striking here are the new CrossGolf “Ice Silver Metallic” color, the new bumpers and the all-round integrated coverings from a robust as well as high-quality carbon fiber in “Anthracite Satin Effect” color. The side sills, wheel arches, door frame and bumpers are covered.
The high-quality body covering frames the lower-set radiator air inlets in the front and the fog lights integrated there as standard equipment. The mid-section of the bumper was designed in the style of an underride protection; it is kept in a silver shade. Its V-shape is continued in the contoured sweep of the engine hood.
Just as striking is the rear bumper with a stylized underride protection that has also proved popular among SUVs; this element dominates the bumper due to its large width. In its design effect the silver underride protection underscores the powerful appearance of the new CrossGolf.
The standard roof railing is finished in “Brilliant Chrome” silver. In terms of design, the standard 17-inch light alloy wheel rims are also related to the wheels of the CrossPolo. Apart from these light elements, it is again the contrast to the dark coverings that gives the silhouette of the CrossGolf its own unique character. The wheel arches were also covered similar to the successful CrossPolo. The protective covering in easy terrain goes from the wheel arches into the sides of the bumpers and over to the side sills. These in turn have a powerful effect, because the lower door frames are also covered and visually form a single unit with the arches. Along with the side trim that is also reinforced, this provides effective protection against the denting that can occur on mean city streets when the doors of parallel parked cars are opened carelessly.
Just like the outside, the interior of the CrossGolf features a high-contrast world of colors. The interior trim was specially developed for the new model. This includes the materials and the coloring of the seat and door coverings and the dashboard appointments.
The inner sections of the seats and armrests feature a waffle structure; they also contrast in color from the sides and the backs of the seats. The backrests of the driver and passenger seats are also outfitted on the outside with folding tables and storage pockets. A practical storage compartment is also located under each of the standard equipment sports seats. The door coverings match the seats in appearance. The upholstered interior is kept in the same shade of color as the inner sections of the seats.
The CrossGolf is also distinguished by the dashboard appointments in silver metallic. Unlike in the Golf Plus, a total of eight round air vents feature rings in “Ice Silver Metallic”. Also standard equipment aboard the new CrossGolf: a three spoke leather steering wheel, leather covered gearshift lever, a specially designed gearshift lever knob (not with DSG), many storage compartments, inside door trim with CrossGolf lettering, pedal caps in top-quality aluminum finish and floor mats framed in a contrasting shade of green.
Like the basic Golf Plus the interior of the CrossGolf features a high degree of versatility and markedly good ergonomics. In front driver and passenger benefit equally: The combination of comparatively high dashboard and raised seating position 7.5 cm higher than the “classic” Golf (plus 8.5 cm in the back) creates a feeling of spaciousness similar to that offered by a compact SUV. This impression reinforces the interior height of 100.7 cm (97.6 cm in back). In addition, the CrossGolf offers lots of leg space in both front and back. But that’s not all: Depending on position the back seat that can be split, moved lengthwise or folded down, the volume of the luggage compartment can vary between a minimum of 395 and a maximum of 505 liters. If the back seat rests are folded down completely up to 1,450 liters of storage volume is available. The luggage compartment floor is also adjustable: Additional storage space is created if it is placed in the higher of two possible positions.
Volkswagen offers the CrossGolf with two gasoline and two diesel engines. The entry-level version of the gasoline engines achieves 75 kW / 102 hp, the basic TDI engine generates 77 kW / 105 hp. The top of the line engines (1.4 TSI and 2.0 TDI) are each 103 kW / 140 hp. The Twincharger 1.4 TSI deserves special attention. Thanks to twin charging via compressor and turbocharger it features an extremely high-torque and agile characteristic. Nevertheless, the engine is exceptionally thrifty. Like the two TDIs equipped with a particle filter, the TDI can also be equipped with a DSG direct shift gearbox.
CrossPolo:
A lifestyle-oriented and practical all-round talent
Designed in the style of a small SUV, the CrossPolo presents itself as a practical and lifestyle-oriented all-around talent with can-do qualities. Thanks to its 15 millimeter increased ground clearance the front-wheel drive four-door with large hatchback competently masters even the roughest roads. With its new 17-inch alloy wheels, robust and color coordinated body-mounted parts and its also newly designed bumpers in an off-road style the avant-garde Volkswagen visually stands out in the sea of compacts. In the interior it’s the special seat upholstery and chrome ornaments that mark the unique character of the multifunctional CrossPolo.
The engine lineup comprises three gasoline engines (47 kW / 64 hp, 55 kW / 75 hp, 74 kW / 100 hp) and two Turbodiesel direct fuel injectors (51 kW / 70 hp and 74 kW / 100 hp). It goes without saying that all engines comply with the Euro4 emission standards. Already in the initial phase the 55 kW gasoline engine is optionally available with an automatic transmission.
As a result of a modified chassis and a practical roof railing that comes standard, the CrossPolo gained significantly in height. The chassis and wheels alone add an additional height of 32 millimeters. Measured up to the roof railing, the CrossPolo is a full 70 millimeters higher than the classic version of the series. All of this gives it a completely unique character.
The robust, avant-garde character of the CrossPolo is also reflected in the details. Some examples: The outside mirrors are painted metallic silver and match the likewise silver roof railing. The metal theme is also picked up as a design element in the modified front spoiler: The trapeze-shaped center air inlet was given a matte aluminum-look frame which continues to take on the suggested form of a robust underride protection. The low lying fog lights next to it come standard.
Similar to the exterior, the interior also shows several modifications. The unique style of the versatile CrossPolo is marked by the special seat covers, sport comfort seats that are color coordinated with the body paint as well as chrome trim in the cockpit. Also standard on board: central locking system with remote control, power windows front and back as well height adjustable driver seat with drawer underneath.
GTI special series are a case for Volkswagen Individual
Golf GTI Edition 30: 230 hp Super GTI for the 30th anniversary of the icon
Polo GTI Cup Edition: with 180 hp the most powerful Polo of all times
The special GTI series impressively demonstrates that Volkswagen Individual is a master of the art of car refinement. With the Golf GTI Edition 30 and the Polo GTI Cup Edition two custom models were created that show both visually and technically that they have the makings for becoming collectors items. The latest “GTIs” in detail:
Golf GTI Edition 30:
From the celebrated concept car to the fascinating special model
It’s the icon of fast compact cars: the Golf GTI. For its 30th anniversary Volkswagen is now offering the Golf GTI Edition 30. Engine performance has been boosted by 1 hp for each year, meaning that the GTI Edition 30 is taking off with 169 kW / 230 hp. The most powerful Golf GTI since conception of the GTI idea sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 245 km/h. In the version with optional DSG direct shift gearbox this GTI model accelerates to 100 km/h in only 6.6 seconds.
In 1976 this wild young boy first loomed large in the rearview mirrors of fast sports cars and heavy sedans. But for a long time “GTI” has not just referred for one model, GTI stands for an individual brand. According to surveys conducted by Volkswagen, 93.2 percent of all Europeans recognize this abbreviation; for them GTI is a Golf and a Golf is a Volkswagen. Whoever drives a GTI doesn’t have anything to explain. He drives a statement – the original with over 1.5 million units sold, the icon of all sporty compact cars. “Grand Tourisme Injection” means driving pleasure, dynamics and passion.
And exactly like 30 years ago this applies more than ever with respect to the latest 200 hp GTI. Now the Golf GTI Edition 30, initially premiered as a concept car during Golf Record Day in Gelsenkirchen in May 2006, offers even more power. Since then enthusiasts from all over Europe have been sending their compliments to Wolfsburg. With a clear message: The car has to be built just like this!
This is why the look of the concept car was adopted as is. And this is further enhanced, among other things, by matte black 18-inch “Detroit” alloy wheels. At no extra charge customers can also order “Rockingham” titan silver wheels, also in 18-inch format. It also features front and rear spoilers, side trim in car color and cherry red rear lights. Another identifying mark of this special model is the Edition 30 insignia on the back.
The interior of the Edition also features exclusivity: The partially leather top sport seats are combined with the classic GTI checkered “Interlagos” pattern on the center strips. It also features red seams on the three-spoke leather steering wheel, on the sleeve of the gearshift lever and on the handle of the parking brake. Red Edition 30 lettering adorns the doorsill and the décor trim (“Brushed Aluminum”) above the glove compartment. Floor mats with red bordering and, or course, the gearshift lever in golf ball design round out the equipment of the Golf GTI Edition 30.
Polo GTI Cup Edition:
The most powerful Polo of all times with racing sport genes
Performance data of 132 kW / 180 hp takes on a certain magic when referring to Volkswagen The reason for this is of a dynamic nature: They were the extra designation of the legendary turbo gasoline engine powered Golf GTI that was presented as a limited special edition on the 25th anniversary of the GTI idea. Now there is again a Turbo GTI with 132 kW – the Polo GTI Cup Edition. This hot item was developed by Volkswagen Individual and carries the genes of the racing car from the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup. They are powered by an FSI engine with 110 kW, but have the same technical basis and nearly identical body design. Compared to the “normal” Polo GTI presented in spring 2006 the Polo GTI Cup Edition has increase performance of 30 hp, the Cup-specific body modifications, 16-inch brakes (front) and new 17-inch alloy wheels.
In particular, the performance data of the Polo GTI Cup Edition reflects the unadulterated GTI idea, because it has a vehicle weight of just 1,190 kilograms (without driver, tank 90 percent full). Each hp only has to move 6.6 kilograms. The sporty consequences: 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 225 km/h.
Maximum acceleration and speed are likely just a side effect of the basic sporty design. Because in this case typical GTI superiority is also molded by convincing torque dynamics: The greatest torque of 235 Nm is available starting from 2,000 rpm up to 5,000 rpm.
The 1,781 cm3 turbo engine thus provides a level of torque of the truly sporty kind. In numbers: In fourth gear the Polo GTI Cup Edition races from 80 to 120 km/h within 7.0 seconds. And in fifth gear only 9.5 seconds pass for the same exercise.
In terms of chassis the most powerful Polo of all times harks back on the balanced architecture of the 150 hp Polo GTI. A shorter suspension system with tighter characteristics reduces the height of the car by 15 millimeters. In contrast to the standard equipped Polo GTI with 16-inch wheels, the Polo GTI Cup Edition comes with 17-inch alloy wheels. The wheel design is also new: While the 16-inch “Denver” wheels visually match the Golf GTI, the 17-inch “Aristo” wheels on the Polo GTI Cup Edition have the identical look as the Polo racing versions with a classic spoke design. 17-inch low profile tires (category W up to 270 km/h) in 205/40 size provide the right traction.
In addition to the 0 to 100 km/h rating the potential for deceleration also has to be right: Disk brake calipers painted red visually underscore the fact that the brake system is truly one of the most stable. The diameter of the ventilated disks is 312 millimeters in front (an additional 24 mm over the 150 hp GTI) and 232 millimeters in back. A hydraulic anti-blocking system (ABS) with Brake Assist is also just as much a part of standard safety equipment as the electronic stabilization program (ESP), anti-skid regulation (ASR) and electronic differential lock (EDL). As part of standard equipment at tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) continuously monitors the tires for the correct amount of pressure.
The design of the new Polo GTI Cup Edition is just as powerful as its performance. It completely follows the aerodynamic modification of the racing series. That’s why the body, compared to the 150 hp GTI, sports newly designed bumpers and a uniquely styled roof edge spoiler. The interior has a classic GTI ambience. The height-adjustable sport seats are upholstered in checkered “Interlagos” fabric, typical of all GTI models. Handy: the beautifully shaped three-spoke sport steering wheel with a GTI logo just like the seats. In striking red: the cross seams of the inside of the leather steering wheel and the border seams of the black three-point safety belt. In addition, special plates in aluminum look (middle console and side air vent openings) underscore the high-quality impression of the interior. No less refined: leather gearshift knob and sleeve (also with red cross seams) as leather parking brake lever. Sporty: the engraved metal H shift pattern on the gearshift knob, the metal caps on the pedals (aluminum look) and the GTI lettering on the side sill trim.
As you like it – the example of the Phaeton Lounge
For the Exclusives, everything imaginable is utilized to the fullest
The new Phaeton Lounge is a concept for the maximum that can be achieved
On the basis of the Phaeton, the designers and engineers of Volkswagen Individual create Exclusives that are uncompromisingly tailored to the needs of their future owners. By means of complex computer simulation the customer is closely involved in the tuning and development process. Once that is done, the preliminary designs themselves are implemented with the highest level of craftsmanship. The integration of the most modern electronic components also requires a special know-how, which Volkswagen Individual has readily available. The limits set on designing one-of-a-kind cars are at most determined by national approval regulations and the current state-of-the-art.
Phaeton Lounge with extended wheelbase
As an example for the performance ability of Volkswagen Individual and the field of Exclusives, the Phaeton Lounge concept car was created. As a study, it displays the pinnacle of the technically possible in the field of individual car fine tuning. The Phaeton Lounge is a limousine in a class of its own. Altogether, the classy stretch limousine measures over 6.80 meters. This makes it approximately 1.80 meters longer than a conventional Phaeton. The Exclusive was put together from three car bodies. The stretch limousine was specially reinforced in the sill board and tunnel area.
Twelve-cylinder engine
A W12-cylinder with 331 kW / 420 hp and a reinforced chassis ensure solid driving performance despite the tare weight of approximately 3.5 tons. Engine power is transferred to all four wheels, making the Phaeton the first stretch limousine in the world with four wheel drive. The electronically regulated top speed is at 180 km/h. It has a six speed automatic transmission (Tiptronic).
For body color of the Phaeton Lounge the designers from Volkswagen Individual chose black piano lacquer, emphasizing the exclusivity of the limousine with its especially smooth surface structure and visual effect of depth. The radiator grille, trims below the side windows and the model designation at the back of the Phaeton Lounge are also kept in dark shimmering chrome.
Lounge-style interior
The finely equipped interior with its material combination of dark and light colored leather imparts an exclusive lounge atmosphere. Floor, décor and middle console are finished in dark, wide pore oak. The high grade wood has an integrated grain and is commonly used in ship building. The floor is adorned with fine aluminum inlays. The seats and side paneling in the passenger compartment are upholstered with Volkswagen “Sensitive” leather in the "Sun Beige" and "Pure Beige" color combination. The rooflining consists of the finest Alcantara.
The Phaeton Lounge offers enough room for a total of six people. In the rear of the car, four passengers can sit comfortably across from one other on spacious and individually adjustable individual seats while the front has room for two additional people. As is customary with stretch limousines, the passenger area can be shielded from the driver’s compartment with a tinted partition.
A relaxed journey is guaranteed by a multitude of exceptional extras. The four seats can be individually adjusted for each passenger. Adjustable footrests also provide a comfortable seating position. The air conditioning can also be individually controlled for each seat. Tinted windows protect the entire back of the car from nosey stares. Located between the back seats is a refrigerator with twelve liter capacity. And extendable minibar in the middle console offers room for further refreshments and two glasses. Cigars are perfectly stored in a custom made humidor made of oak and cedar.
Two 17-inch monitors are integrated in the rooflining and can be lowered at the push of a button. A DVD jukebox is stored in the trunk and another DVD player is integrated right in the back, enabling the insertion of DVDs while traveling. But it’s not just movies that can be shown on the screen, the navigation map can also be viewed. The view and operation of the infotainment system is possible via a separate 7-inch screen in the head area of the rear seat row. Special headsets actively suppress ambient noise and thus provide the best sound.
A variety of external devices can be connected to the monitors and radio navigation via an interface. An iPod-ready adaptor is integrated in the rear middle armrest, where the MP3 player included in delivery need only be plugged in.
The Phaeton Lounge also has a multitude of equipment features for work. For each seat a perfectly crafted wooden table can be folded out from the middle console. A computer has been integrated in the luggage compartment. A mouse and keyboard in the interior of the car are wirelessly connected to the PC via Bluetooth. A USB port is also integrated into the middle console. Via a fast UMTS connection guests on board can surf the internet and send and receive e-mails.

Volkswagen Individual features for the interior
Leather
The basis for the individualization program for the interior is the leather seats. Depending on the model hand-tanned full-grain leather – e.g. Sensitive Classic Style for the Phaeton. Soft “Nappa” is available for the Touareg in the colors “Snow Beige / Anthracite”. “Nature and Nappa” is available in the colors “Iowa / Anthracite”. The Touareg also offers “Rodeo and Cricket” leather in the colors “Dakota / Anthracite” and “Bark Brown / Anthracite”. Additionally, the door panels and rear shelf (on the Phaeton) can be chosen with leather upholstery. Generally Volkswagen Individual uses high-quality varieties of leather, some of them in natural state. Visible seams underscore the manufacture character of the leather and set visual accents. Matching the leather equipment, Volkswagen Individual offers for a variety of models leather steering wheels, hand brake sleeves and hand brake levers made of leather. Here as well the decorative seams match the colors of the seat upholstery.
Applications
With applications of technical materials, Volkswagen Individual sets counterpoints to the elegant hints of the leather equipment. Depending on model, aluminum (e.g. Passat and Passat Variant) or wood stained in high gloss piano lacquer (Touareg und Eos) are available. The interior door trim kept in stainless steel on the Touareg can, on request, be adorned with Individual lettering or with lettering and Individual logo – each illuminated.
Wood décors
Phaeton and Touareg can be individualized a step more refined. Real wood decors are available for both. In addition to poplar grain and piano lacquer (Touareg and Phaeton) the Phaeton spoils passengers with piano lacquer and black poplar grain. Furthermore the interior of the Phaeton can be upgraded with two different real wood inlays. For the Touareg the décor inlays can be a choice of aluminum “Engine Spin” dark, “Micropoint” and “Poplar Grain Light” hardwood.
Music from iPod and USB flash drive
Ever since mobile MP3 players became part of everyday day life, the integration of digital music memory into existing audio systems has become an important component of the entertainment systems. For the iPod, Volkswagen Individual offers a console that connects the popular player to the music system on board with no extra cables. iPod integration is also available for all Golf and Eos versions. Alternatively, an integrated USB port is available for the middle arm rest where music from MP3 players and USB drives from other manufacturers can be accessed.
Movies from the DVD player
The rear seat entertainment system (RSE) from Volkswagen Individual transforms the backseats into movie theater seats. Depending on the model, two different versions of the system are available: for the Phaeton, Passat and Sharan there are either one or two monitors are integrated into the front headrests. For the Golf Plus, Touran and Touareg a monitor can be lowered from the ceiling at the push of a button.
The RSE systems enable the playing of movies and music. In addition to different DVD formats audio CDs with MP3 files can also be played. The delivery of all systems includes a remote control as well as two or three headsets. In addition, an interface is provided for connecting external devices such as games consoles, MP3 players and camcorders.
Sound playback can be done over loudspeakers or connected headsets. The Touareg is delivered with two infra red headsets. The RSE systems are perfectly tuned to the on board audio system of each specific vehicle model. All systems enable independent listening to DVDs and radio via the use of headsets. Operation is possible either via the remote control, via the controls on the DVD player (only in the Golf, Touran and Passat) or the control unit in the rear. In the Touareg and Sharan audio playback is only possible via headset since here the RSE system is not connected with the radio and navigation systems.
TV on board
In the Phaeton the “Multimedia System High-End Volkswagen Individual” (screens integrated into the front headrests, MP3 capable DVD jukebox in the trunk for six DVDs, infrared remote control, interface for external devices such as game console or video camera, two Sennheiser headsets) can be combined with a TV receiver. Its hybrid tuner allows analog and digital reception. In combination with the multimedia system, TV programs can be received while traveling in the back of the car. Additionally, the TV module can alternatively be combined and used with the conventional audio and navigation systems of the Phaeton. For security reasons the display in the instruments in the front fades out at 7 km/h. For the Touareg Volkswagen Individual also offers a TV module. This DVB-T set top-box enables TV reception through the radio and navigation systems display when not in motion.
Refrigerator on board
For the luxury limousine Volkswagen Individual also has a refrigerator in its program, integrated into the seat rest of the back seats.
Volkswagen Individual features for the exterior
Alloy wheels
There is almost nothing that influences the first impression of a car more than beautifully shaped alloy wheels with the matching wide base tires. That's why Volkswagen Individual offers different alloy wheels for almost every model. The dimensions range from 7 x 17 inches (e.g. for Passat and Passat Variant) to the voluminous 9 x 20 inches for the Touareg. Besides the classic aluminum surface, some wheel models are manufactured in the colors titanium, sterling silver and anthracite. A very special look is guaranteed by the gloss finished alloy wheels (e.g. for Golf, Golf Plus, Eos, Passat, Passat Variant and Jetta).
Chrome packages
With different chrome packages Volkswagen Individual underscores the harmonic lines of the cars. Options range from exhaust pipe caps and decorative trim to complete radiator grills. Passat and Passat Variant example. Here, instead of the conventional high gloss chrome the sporty darkened version is used as an alternative. The dark chrome is manufactured via a special coating process where the relevant car parts are coated in a metallic layer. This gives them a matte shiny, ultra hard surface that is extremely scratch resistant and resilient to wear and tear and corrosion.
Paint, chassis and more
Also part of the Volkswagen Individual program are specially tuned sport chassis, bumpers or side sills in body color, custom made bicycle racks as well as high end audio systems.
