Enthusiasts seeking the perfect vehicle to personalize will hit the jackpot with this year's GM portfolio at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, which features all-new, full-size pickups, SUVs, crossovers and cars tricked out for the streets to the slopes and every conceivable surface in between. They include a one-of-a-kind Chevy Silverado off-road concept designed in conjunction with NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. - a successor to Junior's "Big Red" Silverado - and a low-riding Orange County Choppers Silverado hauler concept inspired by the styling cues of the famous bike-building Teutul family.
This year's GM SEMA lineup also heralds the return of three formidable numbers - 4-2-7 - as in the Chevy Silverado 427 - a concept that demonstrates the new Silverado's powerful performance parameters. Under the hood of the Silverado 427 is GM Powertrain's 7.0-liter LS7, the same Gen IV small-block V-8 that powers the Corvette Z06.
"Talk about American muscle - our all-new family of full-size SUVs dominates the segment, and our all-new, full-size pickups are positioned for similar success," said Michael Jackson, GM North America vice president of marketing and advertising. "Our new pickups were designed and built with personalization in mind, and it's great that customizers and enthusiasts agree."
Twenty-seven vehicles will be on display all week in the GM SEMA booth, including 14 Chevrolets; two Cadillacs; four GMCs; two HUMMER H3s; two Pontiac Solstices; two Saturns; and one Buick Lucerne partner vehicle. There will also be a top-secret performance car, developed in conjunction with one of GM's more notable celebrity partners, in the stand.
Cadillac teams up with DUB magazine for a unique spin on the Escalade EXT. In addition to the three Silverado concepts, Chevy features pickups and SUVs decked out for both on- and off-road adventures and that pay homage to Chevy's relationships with the U.S. Ski Team and Major League Baseball. GMC shows off a Sierra NFL Crew Cab with an NFL interior and exterior theme; a Sierra Texas Extended Cab to fend off pesky competitors in the biggest-selling pickup market in America; a Yukon Denali XL "Big Max" that's the most capable, feature-packed, powerful Denali ever; and a Sierra All Terrain Crew Cab.
Crossover SUVs get their due at SEMA, too: The Cadillac SRX Sport, which receives a significantly redesigned interior for '07, gets a Seventh Avenue makeover by upscale women's clothing designer Dana Buchman. The Saturn Outlook Adventure shows how accessories can help the all-new crossover complement a customer's outdoor lifestyle.
And speaking of the outdoors, HUMMER brings two H3s to Vegas - an E85 ethanol-capable model with available genuine HUMMER Accessories; and the H3 Open Top, with a canvas roof by ASC and decked out with real HUMMER accessory products.
In addition to trucks and SUVs, GM will feature a 1969 Chevy Camaro customized by "Mr. October" himself, Reggie Jackson, and Buick makes its first custom partnership appearance in the 43-year history of SEMA with Rick Bottom's street-smart interpretation of the Lucerne full-size sedan, the CXX Luxury Liner. Buick has 10 other customized Lucernes spread throughout the show.
Two ultra-performance versions of the hot-selling Pontiac Solstice will be on display, a GXP-R concept and a Sports Car Club of America race-prepared Solstice Club Sport Z0K. The newest star of SCCA, Solstice finished its debut season with three National Championships - one in Showroom Stock B Club Racing, and one each in C Stock Open and C Stock Ladies Solo autocross competition.
The GXP-R is a concept of a new turbocharged Solstice model that would include restyled front and rear fascias, a more aggressive spoiler, 19-inch cast chrome wheels and multiple other enhancements.
In addition to the Solstice, Saturn will show off Gravana Speed Shop's interpretation of the Saturn Sky roadster. Gravana, working in conjunction with GM Design, has pushed the Sky's styling to the limits with its highly customized concept treatment that enhances the sleek, crisp and modern lines of the production vehicle while providing a cutting-edge visual design appeal.
GM also will show off a growing portfolio of crate engines and accessories designed and engineered specifically for GM vehicles by GM. GM's accessory portfolio for the full-size pickup trucks and SUVs is proof that these vehicles were designed with personalization in mind. It is the most comprehensive ever, with more than 100 products designed in concert with the trucks at the GM Accessory Design Studio.
New electronics offerings include the industry's first application of noise-canceling headphones; a portable overhead DVD entertainment system with a whopping 10-inch screen; an advanced, long-range remote start system with a LCD key fob readout that provides key vehicle information, such as fuel level and tire pressure; and Personal Audio Link, an innovative iPod integration accessory that lets users tote their personalized playlist in their personalized vehicle.
Jackson said shows like SEMA help showcase the ingenuity of GM engineers and designers, and let customers know what they can create in their own garages. "We're providing our aftermarket partners, our own accessories and Performance Parts operations and automotive enthusiasts with the best vehicle canvas on which to create parts, pieces and components that look cool and go fast," he said. "These vehicles feature beauty, race-proven technology and production components that real people can buy and drive - today."
For a taste of Detroit and Europe blended together, look no further than the Buick Lucerne CXX Luxury Liner by Rick Bottom Custom Motor Sports of Mendota, Ill. This interpretation of the Lucerne delivers a great, fun-to-drive enthusiast’s commuter car that occasionally ferries business passengers.
The Lucerne CXX Luxury Liner begins with a two-tone exterior finish with White Gold Flash tri-coat on the sides and Glacier Gold Flash over the top down to the beltline. The colors are divided by a 1/8-inch Gold Miststripe. The two-tone effect conveys a lower, sleeker look.
A ground effects kit consisting of add-on body pieces to the front and rear fascias and rocker panels brings the body closer to the pavement for a performance-oriented look. A small deck spoiler visually extends the length of the trunk. CXX badging tops off the package.
And speaking of the V-8, the Lucerne CXX’s existing Northstar powerplant gets a 20-percent power increase from revised ECU programming, and a Corsa exhaust with noise-cancellation technology provides a throaty sound but whisper-quiet cruising.
Because stance is everything in a performance ride, the Rick Bottom customizers reduced the tire-to-fender gap for an Autobahn-capable appearance, and reduced the ride height by 2.25 inches.
Inside, buttery soft Cashmere leather with perforated inserts on the seats allows the full functioning of the cooled-seat feature. An audio/visual/navigation system worthy of a luxury liner awaits drivers and passengers. The vehicle is equipped with OnStar.

During the heyday of the muscle car, three digits struck fear into the hearts of challengers who found themselves unlucky enough to sidle up next to a Chevy wearing the badge “427. The badge is back on the Silverado 427 – a concept vehicle that demonstrates a tangible extension of the new Silverado’s performance parameters.
The Silverado 427 is powered by GM Powertrain’s 7.0-liter LS7, the same Gen IV small-block V-8 that is the center of power in the Corvette Z06 and available as a “crate engine package from GM Performance Parts. Its cubic-inch displacement is 427. A six-speed manual transmission backs the engine, providing the driver with full control of the vehicle’s substantial capability.
“There’s hardly a more legendary – or menacing, depending on your point of view – moniker in the world of performance than ‘427’, said John Cafaro, chief designer for full-size trucks. “The Silverado 427 concept delivers on the expectation of that revered badge with performance that equals or surpasses the original.
More than just a pickup with a more powerful engine, the Silverado 427 is a total performance package, with a lowered suspension that delivers racecar-like reflexes and an exterior styling package that is simultaneously aggressive and understated.
“The regular cab, short box body style of the Silverado 427 was a deliberate choice, because it represents the essence of elemental performance: filling the smallest, nimblest body and chassis with the most powerful engine, said Cafaro. “Indeed, all elements of this concept are simple and minimalist; it is equipped only with the components necessary to convey its performance.
This means a traditional rear-drive layout for the Silverado 427. There is no all-wheel drive or electronic traction enhancers. Luxury features also were kept to a minimum, as the vehicle’s focus was kept squarely on performance.
Drivetrain details
Fitting the LS7 engine into the Silverado’s engine bay was relatively simple, because it is based on the same Gen IV small-block V-8 family as the Silverado’s regular production V-8 engines – and is available as a “crate engine package from GM Performance Parts. A custom-fabricated air intake system was designed for the Silverado 427, adding not only a necessary air path for the engine but also some underhood distinction.
The LS7 is rated at 505 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, and is built with lightweight reciprocating assembly components and other design features that have their roots in the Corvette racing program. In fact, the LS7 uses a racing-style dry sump oiling system that ensures optimal engine oiling during all driving and cornering maneuvers. Engineers had to make room under the Silverado’s hood for the LS7’s external oil supply tank.
The Silverado 427’s LS7 engine is backed by a Tremec heavy-duty six-speed manual transmission, which transfers torque to GM’s automatic locking rear axle. It’s fitted with 3.73 gears, which multiplies the torque of the LS7 to provide muscle car-challenging acceleration. The six-speed transmission has a steep, 3.01:1 first gear, which contributes to a tremendous performance at launch, while two overdrive gears balance the Silverado 427’s performance with fuel economy that first-generation 427 drivers could only dream of.
Complementing the drivetrain is a set of 22 x 10-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels mounted to wide Pirelli Scorpion 305/40ZR22 performance tires, which do their best to maintain adherence to the Tarmac as the LS7’s revs climb. The tires are the contact points for a performance-tuned suspension that used Ground Force custom front and rear lowering springs, front struts and rear shocks. The lowered suspension helps the Silverado 427 corner flatter and with more precision, while also giving the vehicle a “just right performance stance. A set of Baer disc brakes, with six-piston calipers and 16-inch-diameter rotors, provides the stopping force for the vehicle.
Powerful design – inside and out
Complementing the Silverado 427’s performance is a thoughtfully designed exterior that deftly incorporates high-performance styling cues in a restrained manner, giving the truck a look that is unmistakably aggressive yet respectful of its minimalist performance ethic. The design incorporates numerous changes compared with production Silverado models, including new front and rear fascias, hood, cowl, tailgate, tonneau and body-side cladding.
Many of the design elements are subtle, such as the tight body cladding – which incorporate polished billet side-exit exhaust outlets – and shaved door handles. Other elements immediately draw the eye; the most prominent of these being the dramatic hood scoop. It was designed as a contemporary interpretation of the famous Corvette “Stinger hood scoop, which identified 427-powered Corvettes of the mid-1960s. And like the original Stinger scoop, the Silverado 427’s hood scoop is emblazoned with the “427 numbers and a complementing accent color over the Laser Blue exterior color.
The grille, fascias and tailgate all are designed with a performance-oriented, streamlined appearance. The doors are opened via an ITW Active Touch.
Inside, the Silverado 427 is outfitted with Corvette seats that have been covered with custom Soliel Keisel leather upholstery and equipped with three-point racing-style harnesses. The perforated, black leather seat coverings have blue inserts. Between the seats is a custom center console that incorporates the shifter and houses a set of billet-face instruments. Other details include a revised instrument panel, with billet inserts and trim.

Combining dramatic design and exciting performance, the Chevrolet Camaro Concept recaptures the spirit of one of the most popular sport coupes of all time and redefines the Camaro for new generations of fans.
The Camaro Concept, which stole the spotlight at the North American International Auto Show when it debuted in January, embodies the performance and passion that have made first-generation Camaros some of the most sought-after collector cars, updating the formula with a fuel-efficient powertrain, sophisticated chassis and contemporary design execution. The goal was to make the sport coupe relevant to younger enthusiasts while retaining its appeal to its current fans.
In August, GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner announced that GM will build an all-new version of the Chevrolet Camaro sport coupe beginning in 2009 based on the award-winning concept that ignited the passion of car enthusiasts around the world – even spurring consumers to start petition drives and send in certified checks in hopes of placing early deposits.
“Millions of people of all ages fell in love with the Camaro for all of the right reasons, said Ed Welburn, GM vice president, global design. “Camaros were beautiful to look at and offered performance that could rival expensive European GTs. Yet they were practical enough to drive every day and priced within the reach of many new car buyers.
The long hood, short deck and wide stance of the Camaro Concept leave no doubt that it is a serious performance car. Those looks are backed up by a Corvette-inspired 400-horsepower aluminum small-bock V-8, a six-speed manual transmission, and a sophisticated chassis with four-wheel independent suspension.
Like its forebears, the Camaro Concept was designed to be practical enough for everyday use. It features fuel-saving features like Active Fuel Managementâ„¢ cylinder deactivation technology, yielding highway fuel economy of 30 mpg or better. Its overall size is a comfortable fit for city streets and suburban parking lots, and its back seat provides occasional seating for two adults.
Lean, muscular design
Because of Camaro’s powerful heritage, the GM Design team chose a theme that pays homage to the original Camaro, while being instantly recognizable as an all-new car.
Said Bob Boniface, director of the Warren Advanced Design Studio, “The fact that the Camaro has been out of production for a number of years made it particularly important that the Camaro Concept honor the Camaro heritage in the right way,
The 1969 Camaro, considered by many to be the best first-generation design, was a significant inspiration. But as GM design teams in Warren , Mich. , worked on alternatives for the Camaro Concept, they also turned to the latest Corvette and to aircraft like the YF-22, seeking a design that encompasses the spirit that made the 1969 Camaro great, but interprets that spirit in a fresh, exciting way.
“The overall proportions, long hood and powerful fender forms say, ‘This is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive performance vehicle,’ said Tom Peters, design director, rear-wheel drive performance cars. The prominent front grille and hood bulge hint at the power of the Corvette-inspired V-8 engine. Large wheels and tires, exposed high-performance brakes and prominent fender shapes signal that the Camaro Concept has the handling and braking to go with the powertrain.
The cockpit of the Camaro nestles between sharply defined fender forms, a design element inspired by fighter planes and the new Corvette. And like any high-performance vehicle, the clean, purposeful design is integral to the aesthetic. “The Camaro Concept isn’t just a styled shape, said Peters. “The design incorporates what the vehicle needs to perform to its optimum level.
The same purposeful design is reflected in the interior of the Camaro Concept. The gauges and splash of orange trim hint at classic first-generation Camaros, but the overall design and execution reflect the no-nonsense functionality that drivers expect from a high-performance Chevrolet sports car.
Performance for the real world
The Camaro Concept features the latest generation of GM’s legendary small-block V-8. The 6.0-liter LS2 engine features an aluminum block and heads for light weight, and Active Fuel Management™, which shuts off four cylinders to save fuel when the engine is lightly loaded. This concept version of the LS2 is rated at 400 horsepower, yet it could also deliver more than 30 mpg at highway speeds.
The Camaro Concept’s six-speed manual transmission provides a wide spread of ratios for aggressive acceleration off the line, confident passing and merging and efficient highway cruising.
Modern sports cars are about more than just straight-line speed, so the Camaro Concept features a sophisticated rear-wheel drive chassis. Its independent front and rear suspension features progressive-rate springs and gas-pressurized dampers. Four-wheel vented disc brakes with 14-inch rotors provide confident stopping under all conditions.
Enhancing both the performance and appearance of the Camaro Concept are unique five-spoke cast alloy wheels, 21 inches in the front and 22 inches in the rear.
An American icon
Designed in the mid-1960s, the first-generation Camaro captured the optimism of an era. The Baby Boomers were in their teens, rock-and-roll and Motown ruled the airwaves, and American culture was sweeping the globe.
Like the Impala, Chevelle and Sting Ray, the new Camaro showcased Chevy’s strength of bringing stylish, high-quality cars to a mainstream audience. Its dramatic proportions and graceful lines recalled both the Corvette and the Italian Gran Turismo cars of the era. And its powertrain lineup, which soon included both the potent Z-28 small block and big block 396s and 427s, gave the Camaro the performance to go with its looks.
But what really made the Camaro an American icon was that it was accessible to millions. Chevy sold more than 699,000 Camaros in its first three years. So for every Z-28 taking the checkered flag at the track, there were thousands of less exotic Camaros cruising the drive-ins, picking up the groceries, or taking the family on vacation.
“The Camaro Concept is designed to have that same broad appeal, with unmistakable style, spirit and performance, said Welburn.

The turbocharged Ecotec engine in this SEMA-only vehicle delivers an amazing 300 horsepower and 315 lb.-ft. of torque at a low 3250 rpm. To provide enhanced airflow to the engine compartment, Solstice GXP-R features a front fascia with upper inlets and recessed lower grilles.
