Mercedes-AMG GmbH is consolidating its activities. And with the AMG Performance Studio, the company is starting a new initiative to appeal to customers with very special wishes. In addition to the AMG high performance cars, which are available through the worldwide Mercedes-Benz sales organisation, the Performance Studio develops and produces special AMG vehicles in exclusive, limited quantities. Offered as the Signature Series, Black Series and Editions, the unique special models stand out by virtue of their outstanding handling, motorsport performance, technical and visual distinctiveness and exclusive equipment features, depending on the vehicle type in question. The latest product from the AMG Performance Studio is the SLK 55 AMG Black Series, a purist's lightweight version with a powerful AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine (294 kW/400 hp) and numerous components with technology borrowed from the world of motorsport. In addition to its focus on thrilling AMG vehicles, the Performance Studio satisfies the customers' individual requests a traditional strength of Mercedes-AMG. To meet this demand, the Performance Studio team makes very specific technical modifications including AMG sports chassis, AMG high-performance brakes, AMG wheel/tyre combinations, limited-slip differentials and customised interior features, as well as unique, made-to-order models.
Given the growing demand worldwide for greater customisation and even more dynamic, motorsport-level performance, Mercedes-AMG GmbH has decided to upgrade and expand its range. "We are receiving more and more requests from AMG fans and sports car enthusiasts from around the world for even more dynamic vehicles, special equipment features and specific components. And the new Performance Studio makes it possible for us to meet these requests," says Volker Mornhinweg, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
The company's decades of experience in building high-performance automobiles and its wealth of know-how from the world of motorsport are invaluable assets in the concept and implementation stages. "AMG has its roots in international motor racing, and our customers benefit directly from the impressive success our AMG drivers are having in the DTM. And our engineers and technicians are constantly spurred on by our commitment to Formula One, for which we supply the FIA's official Safety Car and official Medical Car. In the Performance Studio, we transfer the technologies from the race circuit into our vehicles," adds Mornhinweg.
As a result of its reorganisation, Mercedes-AMG will be continually expanding its range of complete vehicles, components and custom solutions. To start, there is the new SLK 55 AMG Black Series, a special coupé version of the unique eight-cylinder roadster and a car with very strong appeal for purists. With its AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine (upgraded to 294 kW/400 hp and 520 Nm of torque), many lightweight components, high-strength carbon roof, 19-inch AMG forged wheels, AMG adjustable suspension and AMG high-performance composite brake system, the special SLK 55 AMG is even more of a sports powerhouse and really shows what it's made of on dedicated racetracks. Market launch is scheduled for July 2006. In Germany, the vehicle costs € 107,300 (incl. 16% VAT).
Even more exclusive is the CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet, which will be available under the Signature Series label. The series name stands for limited-quantity, high-end vehicles with a level of technological sophistication that stands out from the crowd. Limited to a batch of only 100 vehicles, the CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet boasts an impressive combination of motorsport technology, racing-car handling and striking appearance. With its 428 kW/582 hp engine, the AMG high-performance sports car surges from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds, and its top speed is 300 km/h (electronically limited), making the new AMG high-performance automobile the world's fastest open-top four-seater. In Germany, the vehicle costs € 277,820 (incl. 16% VAT).
Compared to series-production vehicles, Editions cars stand out on the basis of their visual and tactile qualities and are sure to be in very strong demand. The CLS 55 AMG "IWC Ingenieur" offered in 2005, for example, featured details specially arranged to correspond to the exclusive IWC "Ingenieur" family of watches. A total of 165 of these unique four-door coupés were produced and there will be more AMG vehicles with similar concepts to follow.
The Performance Studio offers tailor-made solutions to satisfy every customer's individual taste. The SLK, SL and CLS-Class model series, for example, can be equipped with the AMG Performance Package. This package is available ex-works and can include, depending on the vehicle, special wheel/tyre combinations, an AMG high-performance composite brake system, firmer AMG Performance suspension, a more sophisticated cooling system, a multiple-disc limited-slip differential, interior trim made of carbon, and an AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel in leather/Alcantara. AMG vehicles also can be fitted with individual AMG components during the production stage or afterward. In addition to the features mentioned, this will also apply to equipment including the especially lightweight AMG forged light-alloy wheels.
And the experts at the Performance Studio routinely fulfil a broad array of other special requests, including special exterior paint jobs, full leather interiors in a choice of colours, leather or carbon trim, and cutting-edge audio, office and multimedia systems. Even extensive bodyshell modifications are hand-crafted to perfection. The result is an entirely personal vehicle that's one of a kind. All work is completed according to the highest standards of quality and safety.

Growing demand worldwide for greater exclusivity and sportiness
Extensive analyses carried out to precisely determine customer requirements
Production of the Signature Series and Black Series in Affalterbach
AMG components and customised production for every possible customer wish
High-performance AMG cars are becoming more and more popular in all markets around the world, and the product portfolio of Mercedes-AMG GmbH satisfies the most diverse customer requirements. A total of 16 unique vehicle models are available, with power output ranging from 265 kW/360 hp to 450 kW/612 hp. AMG customers looking for even greater individualisation will find exactly what they need at the new AMG Performance Studio, which Mercedes AMG GmbH is using to provide personalised service on a global scale and with a significantly expanded range of offerings.
Extensive analyses conducted by Mercedes-AMG experts in all key markets have revealed that alongside buyers of high-performance AMG production vehicles, there are five separate customer groups seeking even greater sportiness and exclusivity. There are customers: who
1. ...wish to purchase an exclusive, limited-edition AMG vehicle that is exceptionally sporty and clearly distinguishes itself from AMG production vehicles in terms of engineering and appearance, and is suited to serious racetrack use.
2. ...wish to acquire an AMG production vehicle that is significantly more sporty in terms of appearance and engineering, as well as being more suitable for racetrack driving.
3. ...are primarily interested in an exclusive, limited-edition AMG production vehicle that sets new standards in interior and exterior design through special equipment features and superior optical and surface-feel details.
4. ...who wish to optimise their AMG production vehicle for their personal requirements by obtaining special AMG components at the time they purchase the car.
5. ...who have a clear idea of the type of Mercedes-Benz vehicle they wish to own, and use AMG components to make their dream car a reality.
Mercedes-AMG developed the Signature Series for customers who fall into the first category. The series stands for highly exclusive limited-edition AMG vehicles featuring a unique engineering package and expressive exterior design like the CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet. Only 100 of these high-performance sports cars will be built. They are powered by an AMG 5.5-litre V8 supercharged engine with a maximum output of 428 kW/582 hp and maximum torque of 800 Nm. The CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds, and its top speed is electronically limited to 300 km/h, thus making the AMG dream car the world’s fastest open-top four-seater.
Customers from the second category will find the car they’re looking for in the new SLK 55 AMG Black Series. The two-seater, which is markedly puristic in design, not only offers an AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine whose maximum performance has been raised to 294 kW/400 hp and 520 Nm, but also numerous lightweight components and a fixed carbon roof, which reduce its kerb weight to 1,495 kilograms, according to the EU standard. The SLK 55 AMG Black Series accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds; the vehicle’s top speed is electronically limited to 280 km/h. With its 19-inch forged AMG wheels, sport tyres with excellent grip, the AMG adjustable sports suspension, the AMG high-performance composite brake system and numerous cooling system features, the SLK 55 AMG Black Series is the ideal vehicle for taking some fast laps on the racetrack.
The limited-edition vehicles in the Signature Series and the Black Series are built by highly qualified experts at the AMG Performance Studio in Affalterbach. The range of components included in each vehicle can be defined in cooperation with DaimlerChrysler production plants, where the respective basic vehicles are produced.
The third customer group is less concerned with exceptional handling dynamics and more interested in a vehicle’s highly exclusive appearance, equipment features, and surface feel. AMG Editions can provide the desired individuality here, as the series features special exterior paint, refined vehicle-body details, interior components of especially high quality, and special leather upholstery all of which appeal to connoisseurs of an exquisite lifestyle.
To achieve the highest possible level of exclusivity, only a limited number of AMG Editions are produced. In the case of the CLS 55 AMG “IWC Ingenieur offered in 2005, only 165 vehicles were manufactured. The four-door coupé offers an exciting and unique combination of equipment details. For example, all exterior trim elements and the AMG light-alloy wheels are of a titanium-look design, which means they perfectly complement the exterior’s exclusive metallic colour tone in dark titanium grey. The CLS 55 AMG “IWC Ingenieur interior shows off the vehicle’s exceptional nature with the “Exclusive line of nappa leather in titanium colour tone and the new AMG instrument cluster, whose styling is based on the exclusive “Ingenieur family of watches from the Swiss watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen.
AMG components from the Performance Studio are the right “tools that customers in the fourth category can use to optimise their AMG production vehicle. Such customers can choose from special AMG Performance Packages and individual components. The AMG Performance Packages are available ex-works for the SLK 55 AMG, SL 55 AMG and CLS 63 AMG. Depending on the model in question, an AMG Performance Package will include:
Special wheel/tyre combinations
AMG high-performance composite braking system
AMG Performance suspension
More sophisticated cooling features, including the special AMG front apron
Multiple-disc limited-slip differential lock with reinforced final drive gearing
Carbon interior trim
AMG leather/Alcantara ergonomic sports steering wheel
High-performance AMG vehicles equipped with an AMG Performance Package thus offer significantly enhanced handling dynamics straight from the factory, and guarantee even better drivability on racetracks. All AMG vehicles can also be equipped with individual AMG components ex-works. In addition to the features from the AMG Performance Packages mentioned above, such components may, depending on the vehicle, include:
AMG light-alloy wheels built using ultra-light forging technology
Carbon exterior package
AMG light-alloy wheels in various designs and of various types (including multi-piece), at sizes up to 21 inches
AMG sports steering wheels
illuminated AMG door sill panels
Customer group number 5 encompasses those AMG enthusiasts whose personal tastes are even more specialised. Such customers receive competent advice from experts at the Performance Studio when they are putting together their dream car. The portfolio here ranges from special paintwork and leather appointments to multimedia systems and extensive body modifications. These high-quality upgrades are done to hand-crafted perfection.
The Performance Studio offers a full spectrum of interior variants, including complete interior equipment packages with leather covering for details such as the rear-view mirror or the instrument panel. Power curtains for the rear and rear side windows, folding electric tray tables in leather trim with wood or carbon inserts to match the car interior, telephone consoles in various material combinations, refrigerator compartments and bars are also available, as are customised audio, office and mobile media solutions. Passengers can, for instance, select their individual entertainment programme during the ride, on two 6.5-inch monitors integrated into the head restraints. All it takes is the touch of a button to select a TV programme in analogue or digital technology or a DVD film from the six-DVD changer. Each monitor is fitted with top-quality headphones with an individual volume control. Alternatively, the sound can be reproduced through the vehicle’s speaker system.
Mercedes-AMG also offers, in accordance with the customer’s instructions, sports steering wheels, wood and leather steering wheels and selector levers in various types and designs, fine carpeting and illuminated or un-illuminated door sill panels with the AMG logo (which can be engraved as an option).
Part of the Performance Studio’s philosophy is that the customers should be able to adapt the interior and exterior of their vehicle to suit their specific personal tastes. Extensive body modifications are therefore also individually finished to perfection using traditional methods. The result is an unmistakably unique car displaying a high level of technological expertise, creativity, value and quality. And, of course, all work is completed according to the highest standards of safety.
A particularly impressive example of the capabilities of the Mercedes-AMG Performance Studio is without doubt offered by the extra-long Mercedes-Benz G-Class. This exclusive development from Affalterbach offers outstanding spaciousness, excellent off-road capability and exceptional performance. The exclusive G-Class, which has been extended to a length of 5.24 metres, was created specifically in response to customer demand; only 19 units of the model have been built to date.
In order to provide occupants in the last row of seats with the comfort and spaciousness typical of the G-Class, the body and wheelbase were extended by 58 centimetres. The width of the newly designed rear doors was increased to 97 centimetres, making access to the second and third rows of seats especially comfortable. The extra-long roof is also new, while the entire rear section of the vehicle, with its long side windows, is based on the short three-door Station Wagon version. The two rear rows of seats offer luxurious seating comfort. They can also be folded down separately, making it possible in combination with the spacious rear cargo area to use the back of the vehicle in a variety of ways. Ultimately, confident off-road capability and generous spaciousness make the long G-Class a truly special all-rounder.

AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine with 294 kW/400 hp and 520 Nm of torque
Weight reduction through lightweight components and non-retractable carbon-fibre roof
19-inch forged AMG wheels and adjustable AMG sports suspension
As the only eight-cylinder roadster in its segment, the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG delivers an exceptional driving experience. Now the two-seater is becoming even sportier: Mercedes AMG has developed an exclusive, emphatically puristic special series as a coupé variant, a car that sets new standards in handling dynamics the SLK 55 AMG Black Series. With the AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine, which has been boosted to 294 kW/400 hp and 520 Nm, the numerous lightweight components, the non-retractable carbon-fibre roof, 19-inch AMG forged wheels, AMG adjustable sports suspension and AMG high-performance composite brakes, the special SLK 55 AMG brings its sports car talents to bear even more convincingly and cuts an impressive figure especially on racing circuits.
Broad, brawny and low-slung it's clear at first glance that the SLK 55 AMG Black Series is something very special. It offers a captivating view from the front with a redesigned AMG front apron and its broad openings, which supply the added transmission-oil cooler and the high-performance steering-oil cooler with plenty of fresh air. In addition, new side outlets made of carbon ensure effective ventilation for the engine-oil coolers. The front wings, now wider, are made of reinforced plastic with ultra-light carbon-fibre composite material and feature black outlined air outlets. The non-retractable hardtop of the two-seater is also made of carbon-fibre composites, and the black central section with a visible carbon-fibre structure provides appealing visual effects. The elimination of the vario roof and the entire roof hydraulics not only makes possible a significantly lower centre of gravity but also leads to a notable reduction in weight: With a kerb weight of 1495 kilograms according to EC standards, the SLK 55 AMG Black Series is 45 kilograms lighter than the basic vehicle. That improves the weight/power ratio from 4.3 to 3.7 kg/hp.
Engineers not only optimised the weight but also gave the Black Series an optimised AMG 5.5-litre V8 engine with a maximum output of 294 kW/400 hp and 520 Nm of torque. A modified air intake, reduced-resistance AMG sports air filters, new high-performance headers and a new valve-timing scheme ensure a more efficient charge cycle and make the eight-cylinder unit even more responsive to accelerator pedal movements which is also evident from the inimitable and even more impressive AMG V8 sound.
The combination of low vehicle weight and a powerful AMG eight-cylinder engine ensures first-class performance. This SLK 55 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in only 4.5 seconds (standard model: 4.9 s), and it takes just 15.5 seconds for the Black Series to reach 200 km/h (standard vehicle: 17.5 s). Power transmission is accomplished using the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC with manual drive program ("M") and AMG aluminium gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

The suspension and the brake system are the ideal partners for the dynamic power package. The AMG adjustable sports suspension, optimised for the racetrack, allows impressive cornering speeds. In this chassis technology taken from motorsport, the compression and rebound stages of the front and rear-axle shock absorbers can be tuned harder or softer making it possible to adjust the damping comfort and driving behaviour to one's individual purpose. The ride height can also be lowered or raised by five millimetres. The modified elastokinematics at the front axle and the specially tuned mounting of the major assemblies ensure more precise steering and stability when braking which is particularly advantageous in the intense driving on racetracks. A brace in the engine compartment guarantees additional rigidity to cope with higher lateral forces.
The SLK 55 AMG Black Series has large, ultra-light, forged AMG aluminium wheels in the sizes 8.5 x 19 and 9.5 x 19. Compared to the 18-inch light-alloy wheels of the standard vehicle in widths of 7.5 and 8.5 inches, the full wheel assemblies, including tyres, weigh four kilograms less. The advantage is even clearer when compared with equally wide, multi-piece 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels. In this case, the weight savings come to 31 kilograms. The weight reduction results in a greater responsiveness on the part of the speed-sensitive power steering which is also equipped with a more powerful servo pump. The elegantly proportioned multi-spoke forged wheels fill the striking wheel housings perfectly and are fitted with tyres of sizes 235/35 ZR 19 (front) and 265/30 ZR 19 (rear). As an option, and at no extra cost, the customer can also choose special Pirelli sports tyres with a very high grip factor and outstanding wet-driving properties. Superb braking is ensured by the AMG high-performance brakes with large composite brake discs (360 x 32 millimetres) and six-piston fixed callipers at the front axle.
The racing features are consistently carried over into the interior. Two specially developed AMG sports bucket seats without sidebags in black pearl velour and with a silver AMG logo provide the best possible lateral support; the new AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel in leather and Alcantara permits optimal vehicle control. An abundance of carbon fibre on the interior door linings and the trim elements, as well as the black roof lining, give the interior the functional atmosphere of a real racing car and thereby affirm the almost 40-year motorsport history of Mercedes-AMG. The Black Series lettering on the carbon-fibre trim over the glove compartment and on the boot lid signals the special status of this powerful and puristic two-seater.
Despite handling dynamics suitable for the racetrack, the SLK 55 AMG Black Series, manufactured by hand in the Performance Studio, offers all the features that set a real Mercedes-Benz apart: fitness for everyday use, durability, safety and quality. The first models of the unlimited AMG special series will be delivered to customers beginning in July. The price in Germany is € 107,300 (incl. 16 % VAT).

AMG 5.5-litre supercharged V8 engine with 428 kW/582 hp
From zero to 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds
Technology and design borrowed from motor racing
High technology from the world of motorsport, handling typical of racing cars, eye-catching visual appeal and the highest level of exclusivity the new Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet quickens the pulse of car lovers. With the 428 kW/582 hp of power from the AMG 5.5-litre supercharged V8 engine, the all-new AMG sports suspension, the optional sports tyres and wind-tunnel-optimised aerodynamics, this cabriolet which will have a limited production run of 100 vehicles achieves the highest level of driving performance. The AMG high-performance sports car surges from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds, and its top speed is 300 km/h (electronically limited). This makes it the fastest open-top four-seater in the world.
The AMG high-performance Cabriolet was created in response to the great demand for another vehicle that was also limited to 100 units that were rapidly sold out: the CLK DTM AMG Coupé. Another source of inspiration for the Cabriolet was the most successful car in the German Touring Car Championships (DTM) the racing version of the Mercedes-Benz CLK, which Bernd Schneider drove to victory in the 2003 season. The appointments of the CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet are likewise reminiscent of the racetrack: AMG bucket seats upholstered with leather/Alcantara that guarantee optimal lateral support; a suede-covered, oval AMG sports steering wheel; and the AMG instrument cluster with a speedometer that reaches 360 km/h lend the interior pure motorsport flair.
The design alone of the new CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet promises performance levels comparable to that of full-blooded racing cars and documents the transfer of cutting-edge technology from the world of motorsport. A low-reaching front apron with large cooling-air apertures, distinctive wheel arch flaring, 19 and 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels and a diffuser-look rear end with an aerofoil bring to mind the successful CLK racing car. Many of the body components are made of high-strength and remarkably lightweight carbon-fibre composites (CFCs), including the bonnet, doors, front wings, flared rear wheel arches, front and rear aprons, and rear aerofoil.
The power under the bonnet comes from the supercharged AMG eight-cylinder engine familiar from numerous other AMG models, though the engine has been carefully adapted for the Cabriolet. The changes affect the crankcase, pistons, valve system, cooling, air intake system, supercharging and exhaust system. With its 5439 cubic centimetres of displacement, the AMG V8 delivers 428 kW/582 hp of high performance at 6100 rpm, and at 3500 rpm drivers have the maximum torque of 800 Nm at their disposal.
The engine’s immediate response to a touch of the accelerator pedal, impressive torque build-up, exciting high engine speeds and incomparable V8 sound are the outstanding strengths of the AMG 5.5-litre supercharged V8 engine, which gives the new CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet its super sports car performance. From a standing start, the car can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds, and its top speed is a breathtaking 300 km/h (electronically limited). No other open-top four-seat production vehicle can boast such impressive figures. The power transferred by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission also provides drivers with a motorsport feeling. The five gears can be changed with a quick flick of the AMG shift paddles on the steering wheel, and the very fast gear shifting makes it possible to enjoy a particularly sporty and responsive driving experience.

And the suspension is every bit as impressive as the sophisticated power package. As is usually the case in motorsport, a height-adjustable suspension is used. The rear axle was re-engineered, with entirely new spring links and hub carriers as well as reinforced drive shafts. Uniball joints on both axles replace the rubber elements and lend the handling characteristics a high degree of precision. On the rear axle, a limited-slip differential ensures optimal traction, and the acceleration skid control (ASR) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) were tuned to match the higher performance.
Optional sport tyres by Dunlop, a DTM motorsport partner, supply the roadholding ability; the tyre sizes are 255/35 R 19 (front) and 285/30 R 20 (rear). The tyres deliver outstanding traction and are mounted on twin-spoke multi-piece AMG light-alloy wheels, sized 8.5 x 19 and 10 x 20. With their filigree spokes, the wheels aren’t just an attractive visual highlight; they also ensure effective brake ventilation. Excellent deceleration is made possible by the all-new AMG high-performance composite brake system with six-piston fixed callipers in front and four-piston fixed callipers in the rear.
The interior of the CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet has a functional motorsport feeling and the healthy dose of exclusivity of a genuine AMG high-performance car. AMG bucket seats made of very lightweight CFC and covered with leather/Alcantara upholstery lend the occupants optimal lateral support. The AMG sports steering wheel is covered in textured suede, and its oval-shaped rim also gives the driver a particularly good feel for the vehicle. The interior door panels, trim parts and additional interior components are made of CFC. The newly designed centre console features silver-coloured shift gate, a start button and four rocker switches for additional functions.
Despite its motorsport-calibre dynamic handling, the CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet displays all the impressive qualities of a true Mercedes. Its everyday practicality, long service life, safety, quality and service also satisfy the highest standards. Customer deliveries of the CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet, which is limited to 100 vehicles, commenced in May 2006. In Germany, the vehicle costs € 277,820 (incl. 16 % VAT).

Powerful AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine (354 kW/481 hp)
Modified brakes, suspension, cooling and exhaust systems
Many lightweight components used to ensure optimal performance
The new CLK 63 AMG is the official FIA Safety Car for the 2006 Formula One season. With its powerful AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine (354 kW/481 hp) and modified brakes, chassis, cooling and exhaust systems, as well as numerous lightweight components, the fast coupé is well-prepared for its demanding mission during Formula One races. As in previous years, the C 55 AMG estate will serve as the official Medical Car standing by at all 18 races on the Formula One calendar to provide emergency medical assistance if needed. Both vehicles are built and serviced at the Performance Studio.
The CLK 63 AMG Safety Car’s assignment is to lead the Formula One racing cars out of hazardous situations arising from accidents or inclement weather. Following the instructions of the race organisers, Safety Car driver Bernd Mayländer, a former DTM driver, must stay out ahead of the pack and set a fast pace to prevent the Formula One cars’ high-tech engines from overheating and their tyres from losing traction.
The new AMG Safety Car is equipped to handle all climatic conditions, thanks to its impressive array of motorsport technology, including a high-performance radiator, two engine-oil coolers in the sides of the front apron, and an additional, larger transmission-oil cooler. The rear differential has cooling fins and a separate oil cooler.
The Safety Car’s motorsport technology is also clear to see in the vehicle’s other details. Superlative handling is guaranteed by the adjustable suspension and 19-inch AMG forged light-alloy wheels with wide tyres (235/35 in the front and 265/30 in the rear). Compared to the series production version of the vehicle, the Safety Car has a 70-millimetres wider track width at the front and 60 millimetres more at the rear which is easy to see from the flared wheel arches. And its new, enlarged high-performance braking system provides top-rate fade resistance and near-ideal deceleration values. Composite brake discs with six-piston brake callipers and measuring 390 millimetres are installed on the front axle, and steel brake discs (330 millimetres) with four-piston callipers provide the stopping power in the rear. All brake discs front and rear are internally ventilated and perforated. The braking system also features specially developed channels that direct cooling air to the front brakes which are subjected to particularly heavy loads.
For top performance, the AMG Safety Car’s weight was trimmed by more than 150 kilograms in contrast to the road version despite its additional components, including communications equipment, lights, cooling systems for the rear axle and brakes, as well as larger wheels and brakes. The Mercedes-AMG specialists achieved the remarkable weight savings by using high-tech carbon-fibre composite (CFC) materials, which are often found in Formula One and DTM cars. The lightweight CFC material was used to make the car’s front and rear aprons, bonnet, front wings and doors. At 1600 kilograms, the AMG Safety Car is more than 150 kilograms lighter than the series production CLK 63 AMG, which has a kerb weight of 1755 kilograms (according to the EC measuring method).
Aside from the FIA Formula One logos, the light system on the roof of the Safety Car is the feature that makes it stand out from the series-produced CLK 63 AMG. The white strobe lights in the headlamps and tail lights have a neutral signal function and remain active whenever the car in is use. For communication with the race organisers, the Safety Car is equipped with a sophisticated radio system, a TV monitor and cameras installed inside and out. Bernd Mayländer’s “work station features two bucket seats with four-point seat belts, exclusive black-and-silver leather fittings, Formula One door sill panels, a non-slip AMG sports steering wheel and high-quality carbon trim all features that emphasise the special character of the new FIA Safety Car from Mercedes-AMG.
Mercedes-AMG has been providing the Formula One Safety Car for ten years. An AMG E-Class Coupé with a V8 engine was used as the Medical Car as far back as 1984.

Based in Affalterbach near Stuttgart, AMG is the high-performance brand of the Mercedes Car Group. It is responsible for all the development processes related to the chassis, engines, drive systems, brakes, electronics, aerodynamics, interiors and designs of AMG vehicles, as well as for the final approval of the completed car which is always 100 percent AMG-Mercedes, down to the last detail. The superbly qualified specialists in Affalterbach build the powerful V8 and V12 engines to the highest standards of quality, while always adhering to the traditional philosophy of “One man, one engine. In addition, Mercedes-AMG manages all of its marketing and sales-related activities on its own.
Mercedes-AMG’s strength lies in its highly motivated employees and the consolidation of all automotive functions in a very compact organisation. This ensures fast decision-making and the ability to quickly and flexibly implement the steps needed to satisfy a very broad spectrum of customers’ wishes, as proven by the rapid growth of the company’s model range. Mercedes-AMG also offers an extensive range of accessories and optional equipment for almost all Mercedes-Benz models. Customers’ special requests are met by the AMG Performance Studio, which handles small batch production of the SLK 55 AMG Black Series and the CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet and makes even the most unconventional of customer wishes come true. About 700 employees currently work at the Mercedes-AMG headquarters in Affalterbach. All of them are highly motivated and qualified specialists, who continuously strive to provide the ultimate in high performance and precision. That becomes particularly obvious to anyone who visits AMG’s modern engine production facility, where the powerful engines are built in line with the most stringent quality standards and in keeping with the “One man, one engine tradition.
Mercedes-AMG has been offering tuning services for Mercedes-Benz vehicles since 1967, and the company is a pioneer in this sector. Over the decades, AMG founder Hans Werner Aufrecht has impressively demonstrated the company’s expertise with numerous successes in international motorsport. And the transfer of racing technology to street vehicles continues to delight every Mercedes-AMG customer. Today the company offers the entire range of automotive functions above all, the development and production of high-performance engines all in a very compact facility. Instead of simply tuning automobiles subsequent to their production, the development processes for chassis, engines, drive systems, brakes, electronics, aerodynamics, interiors and design have long since been resulting in vehicles that are conceived as unique creations right from the start. In other words, cars that are truly AMG-Mercedes in every detail.
Since its incorporation into DaimlerChrysler AG on 1st January 1999, Mercedes-AMG has been included in the strategy and product phases early on and has been able to make optimal use of the Group’s resources when needed. New high-performance AMG models are included in the product specifications from the very start of the concept phase, and they go through all the steps of the development process leading to series production, in the same manner as other Mercedes-Benz vehicles. In addition to its own high-tech test rigs, Mercedes-AMG can also use all Mercedes Car Group testing facilities. What’s more, Mercedes-AMG has its own testing centre at the Nürburgring race circuit, where it can conduct a demanding programme of AMG-specific development and testing on the circuit’s North Loop the world’s most challenging stretch of racetrack. The final product of the company’s development processes is always an AMG vehicle that is perfectly tuned in every respect.
During their development and production, all AMG products must satisfy quality, safety and environmental standards that are every bit as high as those that apply to every Mercedes vehicle. Since every AMG vehicle is a true Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes’ comprehensive service and warranty coverage is also available in full for AMG cars.
