New entry-level petrol engine units

The Ibiza range improves. Alter adding embellishments to enhance its sporty image, now it is time to improve the entry-level petrol engine units.

The most significant improvements can be found on the 85 hp 1.4 engine. The performance increase over the previous 75 hp version has been achieved by introducing a new intake manifold, a larger diameter throttle valve, improvements to the exhaust camshaft and a new engine terminal box. Improvements to the performance levels are as follows: the new 85 hp 1.4 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.9 seconds and in-gear acceleration from 60 to 100 km/h takes 15.3 seconds. The 75 hp engine delivered 13.2 seconds and 17.3 seconds, respectively.

Fuel consumption has decreased despite better performance. The official figures are 8.5 litres in city driving, 5.2 on the extra-urban cycle and 6.4 litres combined (8.9, 5.3 and 6.5 on the 75 hp unit). The 75 hp 1.4 engine will still be sold in the automatic gearbox version.

The new 70 hp 1.2 is another improvement over the previous 64 hp unit, thanks to optimisation work done on the engine’s electronic management. Acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h now takes 14.7 seconds compared to 14.9 seconds before optimising. Fuel consumption has changed slightly, to 7.8 litres in city driving, 5.1 on the extra-urban cycle and 5.9 combined (the 64 hp 1.2 featured 7.7, 5.1 and 6.0, respectively).

With these two new additions, the complete petrol engine range features the 75 hp 1.4 16V automatic, the 100 hp 1.4 16V and two 1.8 20V Turbo units, the 150 hp FR and the 180 hp Cupra. All these engines are mated to five-speed manual gearboxes.

The Diesel range features five direct-injection TDI versions - two 1.4 litre units and three 1.9 litres. The entry-level 70 hp 1.4 is followed by the 80 hp 1.4. The middle and top of the range include the 100 hp 1.9, the 130 hp 1.9 FR and the 160 hp 1.9 Cupra, the most powerful in its segment. These last two are mated to six-speed manual gearboxes, while the other three are available with a five-speed manual. All five engines fully comply with Euro IV emission regulations.

These engines combine with five trim levels – Reference, Stylance, Sport, FR and Cupra.

The newest addition to the Ibiza range equipment is portable MP3 player connectivity. The connection is located in the glove compartment, and can be specified for either iPod or players with a USB port. Another possibility is a CD radio with MP3 and Aux-in connection to install external audio devices.

The following lists the main elements of equipment for each trim level:
