Fiat, dancing to a new tune

This is the advertising slogan that sums up the new atmosphere at Fiat, which is determined to become a protagonist in all segments. It is an ambitious goal, and to achieve it, the company has committed its best resources, human, professional and technological. The results are the numerous important novelties that have been presented in recent months, from the Croma to the Grande Punto, the Panda Cross and the Fiat Sedici. They are all original, successful cars that join the numerous stylistic and technological updates to models already in production.

On the strength of one of the widest, most comprehensive ranges on the world automotive market, and of an extraordinary human and technological heritage, in Geneva Fiat presents a unique, spectacular display on a stand of more than 1,200 square metres, decorated in shades of white, grey and blue, and built with different materials. That is not all. Around the Fiat building are three large spheres made of superimposed blades of lacquered wood, which are rendered even more original by the changing light effects inside them. And there is sure to be great curiosity about the circular bubble, in which the 'Oltre Fiat' show-car is displayed behind a plexiglass porthole.

Immersed in this spectacular scenario, the general public can see for itself that Fiat really is dancing to a new tune and that today its products embody the most sophisticated technology, the best Italian design and maximum respect for the environment. For this reason, the Geneva stand focuses on three main areas: 'QUATTROXQUATTROXTUTTI' (4x4 for everyone), the 'Blue&Me' infotelematic system and the environment-friendly models. And around these three areas are other areas dedicated to the concepts of sportiness, prestige and versatility, as interpreted by the Grande Punto, Croma and Idea MY models.

The many production novelties combine with the architectural and graphic elements to create an extraordinary atmosphere which does not hesitate to communicate the brand's determination to look to the future, developing innovative models with unmistakable styling.

'QUATTROXQUATTROXTUTTI'

A large area is dedicated to the concept of 'QUATTROXQUATTROXTUTTI', marking Fiat's return to the '4x4' world, with the clear goal of making the entertainment and safety that only four-wheel drive can guarantee available to everyone. The absolute stars of the show are the brand-new Fiat Sedici and Panda Cross (the latter is also on display in the 'Monster' special series), as well as the Panda 4x4, the original four-wheel drive version that can tackle any situation without being fazed by anything.

The Fiat Sedici is exhibited in four Emotion versions, all with four-wheel drive, and fitted with chromed bars, 16" alloys and chromed exhaust terminals. Two are equipped with the 120 bhp 1.9 Multijet engine, while the other two are powered by the 107 bhp 1.6 16v unit. The Panda Cross is present with a 70 bhp 1.3 16v Multijet, the same engine that equips the Panda Monster - the Special Series which obviously harks back to the famous Ducati motorcycle - and a Panda 4x4 that evokes the desire to travel in complete freedom, without forgoing any of the entertainment of driving this car through narrow city streets. And finally, visitors can take a close look at the extraordinary 'Oltre Fiat' show-car that aroused so much curiosity at the Bologna Motor Show in December.

Sophisticated technology and absolute sportiness

The second spotlight on the stand is focused on the Grande Punto which interprets three different concepts from an original viewpoint: sportiness, playfulness and ultra-sophisticated technology in the field of entertainment and telephones.

Geneva marks the debut of 'Blue&Me', a sophisticated infotelematic system developed jointly by Fiat Auto and Microsoft. This system, which is based on Windows Mobile technology, allows you to make/receive telephone calls and to listen to music simply and safely as you drive. And thanks to Bluetooth® technology, you can also communicate with the outside world from the car using your own personal mobile phone or HDA. The device offered on the Grande Punto incorporates a sophisticated hands-free system with voice recognition and a USB port that allows you to listen to your favourite music when it is recorded on a mobile phone, or one of the new smart phones, on an MP3 player or on a USB pen drive.

The display is completed by the Grande Punto Rally Super 2000 and the Grande Punto 'Need For Speed'. Standing on two circular platforms paved with steel sheeting, the two cars embody 'absolute sportiness', whether that of the real race circuit or that of the 'virtual' race tracks of the most famous car racing videogame. And next to these special versions, visitors will be able to admire the most powerful Grande Punto in the range: the 130 bhp Sport 1.9 Multijet.

The 'environment-friendly' versions

Two cars with a minimal environmental impact are on display in Geneva: the Multipla MY Emotion-'Natural Power' and the Panda 'MultiEco'. The latter is an innovative concept car that represents the vanguard of Fiat's commitment to the environment, and anticipates the launch of the Panda 'Natural Power' due to take place at the end of 2006.

And the Multipla MY 2006 makes its appearance on the stand for the first time. With revamped styling, Fiat's original people-mover responds to the latest market trends with a new Emotion version, with more refined exteriors and interiors. The version on display is a Multipla MY Emotion, made even more interesting by its dual methane and petrol fuel system.

The present and the future of Fiat's environment-friendly cars are the best proof of the importance that the company attributes to the environment. A constant commitment that has produced a complete range of products, which meet the demands of professional operators and private individuals: from the Doblò to the Punto, the Multipla, the Panda and the Ducato. The result is a broad range that puts Fiat Auto firmly in the lead in Europe for cars with methane systems as original equipment: over 24,000 were sold in 2005 (more than twice the number sold in 2004).

Prestige and versatility

The display is concluded by the new Croma and the Idea MY, two models that were launched last year and which are enjoying huge success with the experts and the public.

The Croma is equipped with the powerful 200 bhp 2.4 Multijet engine and 'dressed' in new 'Ink Blue' paintwork. The top-of-the-range version is on show, with luxurious hide coloured leather upholstery, combined with a monochrome facia and burnished trims. The car also features the large SkyDome sunroof, the Connect NAV+ satellite navigator and 10-spoke 18" alloys. It is the ideal car for anyone looking for excellent performance combined with outstanding value for money in terms of standard equipment, all at an unbeatable price. And finally, a special place is reserved for the versatile Fiat Idea MY. The version on show is equipped with the sparkling 100 bhp 1.9 Multijet engine; a compact, comfortable people-mover that satisfies our desire for liberty. The display is concluded by the new Croma and the Idea MY, two models that were launched last year and which are enjoying huge success with the experts and the public.

‘QUATTROXQUATTROXTUTTI’

The Fiat Sedici

One of the stars of the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games, the Fiat Sedici marks a veritable leap in the compact SUV scenario because it is the result of a style and design approach based on ‘freedom of choice’. The new model is a fusion of different vehicle types: it combines the driving satisfaction and handling features of a compact Fiat with the off-road performance of an SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle). Incidentally, the car’s name says everything about its off-road proclivities: Sedici (sixteen) is what you get when you multiply 4x4 – the code used to identify four-wheel drive vehicles. The Sedici’s design was developed in conjunction with Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign company as part of the Fiat-Suzuki manufacturing collaboration project.

The Fiat Sedici marks Fiat’s return to the 4x4 world, with the clear intention of standing out from the herd of off-road cars, due partly to certain stylistic features such as innovatively designed tail-lights, a uniquely dynamic mid-line, a well-proportioned rump and the muscular bulk of its side inserts.

The new model is available in two specifications (Dynamic and Emotion) with two power units (107 bhp 1.6 16v and 120 bhp 1.9 Multijet) and reconciles apparently conflicting qualities: plenty of passenger room despite a compact size; the handling of a saloon with the off-road qualities of an SUV, and original exterior styling with interior design geared to maximum practicality. This means that the Fiat Sedici is the ideal solution for the motorist of today who inhabits a technological world where it is common for objects to serve more than one purpose. The car is now seen as a versatile product that can adapt to different activities: work, relaxation, culture and leisure time.

The Fiat Sedici has thus been designed and built for drivers who wish to make a statement by driving a sophisticated car with elegant lines, yet are also seeking a compact, easily handled and safe car that will slip through town traffic with ease. The extraordinary versatility of the Fiat Sedici that results makes it ideal for everyday use: its dimensions are 411 centimetres long, 176 centimetres wide and 162 centimetres tall with a wheelbase of 250 cm. These dimensions and features make the Fiat Sedici one of the most original cars in its segment. More specifically, the new Fiat model is 11 centimetres less than the average length for compact SUVs (as far as customers are concerned, this means the vehicle is easier to handle, particularly around town). The vehicle is also 10 centimetres lower, which is evident in its slender shape. This makes it look more like a compact saloon and makes for better performance, fuel consumption and emissions.

The new Fiat model allows its customers to make the most of their free time, particularly if they love nature and wish to indulge their taste for adventure and challenge: the vehicle boasts an all-terrain look plus a special adaptable four wheel drive system that allows the driver the freedom to change from a 4x2 drive to a 4x4, thus ensuring this vehicle consumes less fuel than other off-road vehicles in the same category. And last but not least, a Fiat Sedici equipped with the spirited 120 bhp 1.9 Multijet engine assures outstanding performance, travelling comfort and respect for the environment.

The Fiat Sedici simultaneously ensures thrills and driving satisfaction by carefully juggling style and sophisticated engineering. Its vigour arouses a zest for life while satisfying the desire to travel in complete freedom. Fiat aims to play a leading role in the development of the SUV by offering an off-roader for all. This steadily growing market segment rose from a share of 1.7% in 1992 to the current level of 6% of the entire European fleet. Back in 1992 the segment was made up of vehicles that were configured for out-and-out off-road driving but the original generation of off-road vehicles were later supplanted as a result of two events: the first occurred in 1994 with the arrival of the first compact SUVs combining the qualities of true 4x4 off-roaders with an up-to-date and original design, making them suitable for city driving. These were followed in 1997 by deluxe off-roaders: with their wealth of equipment and extremely generous dimensions, these were the ideal response for demanding, sophisticated customers in a continual quest for unique products with a strong personality.

Both subsegments, particularly the compact SUV subsegment, are now enjoying growing interest from the public and the scenario is changing quickly. The size and features of the Fiat Sedici slot it into the compact SUV category but it stands head and shoulders above the crowd for its absolutely elegant exterior styling and very appealing standard equipment package. Plus the fact that the new model is covered by a 3-year (or 100,000 km) warranty.

The Panda Cross and Panda Monster

A consummate off-roader, able to get you out of a tight spot when the going gets tough. But also a nimble vehicle that can easily weave in and out of city traffic. This, in brief, is the dual personality of the Panda Cross that adds an extra sprinkle of sporting style to the Panda 4x4 range to make it a fashionable choice. A special version of this new car has already been developed: the Panda Monster.

This special limited, numbered series will be sold in the same way as any deluxe product (620 units will be produced, to commemorate the cylinder capacity of the Ducati motorbike of the same name). The Panda Cross also visibly reveals the same gutsy look as the powerful Monster motorbike, beginning with its distinctive black livery and other black-painted style motifs: side strips, mouldings, roof bars, air intakes – and also the headlight and tail-light frames. The rear windows, rear screen and the quarterlight are also dark. The grille and bumper shield are metal coloured while the mean-looking alloys offer a glimpse of the gold-painted brake callipers beneath. The same sporty look is evident inside the car, where the upholstery is in black leather. The new Panda Monster represents the very best of Italian style combined with the supreme engineering that has also typified two world-renowned companies: Fiat and Ducati.

The model in brief

Born for enjoyment and capable of making even the most world-weary youngster sit up and take notice, the new version created to head the Panda four-wheel drive range confirms itself as a vehicle packed with personality. The car is also sturdy and good looking, with all the attributes and qualities encoded in the DNA of any Fiat: innovative design, cutting-edge technology accessible to all and clever solutions to make life simpler and better. These winning qualities are recognisable from the original Panda model that celebrated its milestone of 500,000 units produced in the Tychy plant (Poland) on October 7 last year. Not to mention the fact that, though destined mainly for European markets, the various versions of the Panda are also sold in countries such as Malaysia, Taiwan and the island of Martinique; and 1831 examples are currently being driven on the roads of Japan. The Panda model is also the second biggest selling vehicle in Italy, after the Fiat Punto. Since it was first introduced on the market, it has rapidly risen up the league table in segment A to reach first place in the Italian and European top ten. Its commercial success is confirmed by the 18 prizes it has received from the international trade press, including the prestigious ‘Car of the year 2004’ award.

This public and critical acclaim rewards the extraordinary ability of the Panda design to extend itself in the form of new versions: the tiny ‘up for anything’ 4x4, the funky Alessi version, the entertaining Panda Active and the well-appointed Panda Emotion – not to mention the competitive Panda Rally and a host of concept cars created on the same base. And now comes the turn of the Panda Cross. The Panda is not merely a segment A supermini but an authentic platform on which Fiat is creating an entire family with the sort of engineering and attention to detail you would expect from a higher category car.

Unique style born out of a marriage of sportiness and elegance

The Panda Cross is aimed at young customers who live life in the fast lane, and immediately conveys an idea of freshness and fun, in addition to solidity and sturdiness. It also guarantees driving satisfaction and arouses a will to live life to the full and to satisfy your desire to travel in complete freedom. The new version also features styling similar to that of larger off-road cars but with all the benefits that only a mini can offer.

The Panda Cross therefore combines elegant features with sporty traits to create a product with a strong aesthetic personality: roof bars, chunky side strips, big headlights and wide bumpers. The new vehicle also has the off-road performance typical of an SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle). The car can overcome any difficulty thanks to its four-wheel drive (an automatically engaged 4x4 system with viscous coupling) and Locking Differential (a feature more typical of higher segments, that ensures the optimal division of drive torque to the wheels with the best grip on the ground). Apart from all this, it is small enough to go anywhere you want: just 358 centimetres long, 161 centimetres wide, and 164 centimetres tall (160 without the bars) with a wheelbase of 230 cm.

Inside, the Panda Cross offers a distinctive, sophisticated interior that benefits from special fabric trims in three two-tone colour schemes: sand/black, sand/green and orange/black. The new 4x4 version also retains the big luggage capacity that has always been one of the strengths of this model. With the rear seat in one piece or split, the space increases from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 855 dm3 (measured to the roof). If the rear seat is of the split sliding type, the figures are 230 dm3 (with the seat fully forward) and 780 dm3 respectively.

The engineering of a consummate off-roader

The Panda Cross is a car of huge personality that will be able to satisfy customers with different needs and tastes, including the growing number of drivers who seek adventure and an open-air life. Like the other Panda 4x4s, the new version offers such customers a permanent four wheel drive system with a viscous coupling and two differentials that come into play automatically when required to tackle sticky situations.

For the first time in the Panda 4x4 range, this vehicle is fitted as standard with an electronic differential lock with an LD (Locking Differential) function that acts at speeds below 30 km/h to brake slipping wheels and transfer torque to the other wheels on the same axis: on take-off, for example, and on snowy, icy or muddy roads – and on all occasions when the wheels do not grip to the same extent.

The 4x4 supermini boasts excellent driving comfort due to its tried and tested suspension layout with specific settings. At the front, the suspension is independent, MacPherson type with lower wishbones linked to a subframe and an anti-roll bar connected to the shock absorber. The rear suspension is also independent with longitudinal tie rods connected to a specific frame with anti-roll bar.

The 1.3 Multijet, a record-breaking power unit

The decision to buy a supermini is often due to considerations of overall low running costs. The Panda Cross does not disappoint on this score: the new model is powered by the 70 bhp 1.3 16v Multijet engine, the best that automotive engineering can offer in the small turbodiesel field. Fiat was the first to introduce power units with Multijet technology to the mini sector and also the first to make this engineering heritage available to 4x4 minis.

This product is effective around town and also for longer trips while satisfying Euro 4 emission limits. The 1.3 16v Multijet unit develops a maximum power output of 70 bhp (51 kW at 4000 rpm) and torque of 14.8 kgm (145 Nm at 1500 rpm) and is combined with a five-speed manual gearbox with reduced dimensions and outstandingly manoeuvrable selection lever. A Panda Cross with this equipment can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 18 seconds and reach a top speed of 150 km/h. The outstanding torque, even at low speeds, and good fuel economy (5.3 l/100 km over a combined route) ensure an outstanding performance/fuel consumption ratio.

Comfort, equipment and safety typical of a higher segment vehicle

Although its appearance suggests the solidity typical of a higher segment, the Panda Cross is a real supermini. Petite exterior dimensions are a valuable quality in a car that undoubtedly numbers ‘city car’ among its attributes. But the new version is about much more than this. For example, it boasts an overall passenger room coefficient of more than 68%, one of the best in the supermini category. And more: the suspension layout adopted also ensures great handling and driving comfort. The front system is a MacPherson configuration while the rear suspension features interconnected wheels (i.e. semi-independent) with a torsion beam. The Panda Cross is fitted as standard with alloy wheels and 175/65R15 tyres, again to achieve a better balance between handling and comfort.

Apart from driving satisfaction, a Fiat car must also offer on-board well-being. And that means surrounding the driver and passenger with technologies that ensure the very highest comfort standards. Hence the need to make the interior environment into a cosseting living area: the Panda Cross therefore offers as standard a remote control unit, Dualdrive electric steering, electric mirrors, leather steering wheel, passenger seat with a pouch on the back and a storage compartment underneath, electric windows, height-adjustable driver’s seat and adjustable steering wheel. Not to mention the fact that the new version offers features that are absolutely unique for this segment, e.g. the revolutionary 70 bhp 1.3 Multijet engine and an electronic differential lock with Locking Differential function. The opulent array of standard equipment includes 15 alloys. A long list of options and accessories is also available to express the taste and personality of any customer to the full: for example, you could choose to equip your car with the sophisticated CONNECT Nav Plus infotelematic system, an automatic climate control system and a Sky Dome electric sunroof. The Panda Cross puts an end to the age of faceless mass production as far as superminis are concerned.

The new version also offers an outstanding braking system that guarantees prompt, progressive braking and short stopping distances. The ventilated front discs measure 257x22 mm while the solid rear discs measure 240x11 mm. The Panda Cross offers as standard ABS with EBD complete with an antislip function during deceleration (MSR). As far as passive safety is concerned, the new version is equipped with a double airbag at the front and rear head-restraints. Other features include foglights with a headlight washing system for a higher level of preventive safety in view of the off-road use to which the vehicle will be put.

The Cross: the bigger Panda 4x4 range extends the ‘Panda family’

The Cross version is the icing on the cake of the Panda range, the model that was chosen as ‘Car of The Year 2004’ and ‘European Car 2004’, and is also the winner of another 16 prestigious international prizes. This critical acclaim has been confirmed by true commercial success: since its launch, more than 500,000 units have been registered in Europe (front wheel drive and four wheel drive), a result that makes this the biggest selling model in its market band.

If we consider the results for 2005 alone, the Fiat Panda achieved a 32% share of the supermini segment with sales of 200,000 in Europe (in Italy it exceeded 45% with approximately 130,000 units delivered). In 2005, the European sales mix favoured the Dynamic specification (38% with the 1.2 Fire engine and 11% with 1.3 Multijet engine), followed by the Active (17%) and the extremely well-appointed Emotion (9% for the petrol version and 5% for the diesel version). The best equipped of the 4x4 versions (1.2 4x4 Climbing) did best of all, accounting for nearly 13% of total sales for the model.

The Panda family is all set to grow and strengthen this leadership: in September, for example, we will see the sales launch of a Fiat Panda 4x4 equipped with the revolutionary 70 bhp 1.3 16v Multijet engine, the smallest and most advanced second generation direct injection common rail diesel power unit. The Panda Alessi will also be available throughout Europe from January 2006. This new version arose out of cooperation between Fiat and Alessi, two brands famous throughout the world for their contribution to the development of Italian industrial design. Now comes the turn of the Panda Cross that will take its place at the top of the Panda four-wheel drive range, which already includes the Panda 4x4 (a quintessentially practical application of the vehicle) and the Panda 4x4 Climbing (the small and elegant off-roader able to tackle any situation with an extra touch of interior and exterior sophistication).

The ‘Oltre Fiat’ show-car

The ‘Oltre Fiat’ is a unique show-car that confirms the Fiat Group’s excellence and technological superiority in the large four-wheel drive and off-roader segment. It was built on the base of Iveco’s LMV (Light Multirole Vehicle) a new military off-road vehicle with cutting-edge engineering features, that has been chosen by the Italian Army and also won a FCLV (Future Command and Liaison Vehicle) contract from the British Army.

The show-car offers generous exterior dimensions: 4,870 mm long, 2,050 mm tall and 2,200 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 3,230 mm. All this is expressed through exuberant styling, dictated by a silhouette with linear wheelarches that cut the smooth side panel in two. The door handles are also recessed so that they do not get in the way during off-road driving. The design concept emphasises practicality and ability to stand up to the extreme performance required of this vehicle.

The crew-cab configuration (double cab with an open box) is an ideal blend because it allows you to feel master of the situation inside a comfortable passenger compartment while the vehicle displays the Spartan nature of a rugged expedition pick-up. The tubular structure above the passenger compartment makes the vehicle look even more solid and focuses attention on a complete roll bar inside. An adjustable sun blind at the top of the windscreen adds dynamism to the roof and is reminiscent of the distinctive vehicles used to cross the desert.

The Oltre Fiat is clearly intended to express strength and solidity and inherits all the distinctive features of the military model, including a permanent 4x4 transmission that allows it to tackle any situation or trail. It also benefits from a high ground clearance (50 cm) and a highly efficient independent suspension system with coil springs and coaxial shock absorbers.

Its extraordinary credentials as an explorer are also enhanced by the fact that the four-wheel drive engages automatically (as required). All three differentials are lockable to guarantee outstanding wheel grip in all conditions. These features allow the Oltre Fiat to climb a lateral gradient of up to 40% and a longitudinal slope of 80%. It can also tackle an 85 cm deep ford (1.5 metres deep if extension pipes are added to the intake and exhaust).

The Pirelli PS22 tyres mounted on the Oltre Fiat are regular production tyres that are extremely strong and guarantee excellent traction even in very difficult situations; in fact, they were adopted by vehicles that competed in the Baja Aragon and Tunisia Rallies in the ‘track’ class.

The multipurpose vehicle on show in Geneva is equipped with an Iveco F1C common rail engine with variable geometry turbocharger and intercooler. This is a flat four cylinder 3000 cc engine that delivers a maximum power of 136 kW (185 bhp) at 3700 rpm and ensures a generous torque of 456 Nm at 1800 rpm. When combined with an automatic 6-speed transmission, the power unit can propel this extraordinary vehicle to a top speed of over 130 km/h.

The Oltre Fiat show-car weighs some seven tonnes (in running order with all tanks and reservoirs full) and can accommodate four or five people, depending on the chosen interior specification. Its payload is approximately three tonnes (double that of the US Hummer).

Fiat thanks the following for their help in producing the Oltre Fiat show-car: RRS (vehicle outfit), Pirelli (tyres), Sabelt (seats) and Alpine (audio and video systems).

Sophisticated technology and absolute sportiness

The Grande Punto ‘Blue&Me’

The car displayed on the stand is equipped with the sophisticated ‘Blue&Me’ device which is absolutely unique in this field. Developed jointly by Fiat Auto and Microsoft, the system, which is based on Windows Mobile technology, changes the communications, information and entertainment paradigms in the car, improving the comfort and quality of the time spent on board.

The device is extremely simple to use, and allows you to make/receive telephone calls and to listen to music simply and safely as you drive. And thanks to Bluetooth® technology, you can also communicate with the outside world from the car using your own personal mobile phone or HDA.

The system on offer will be supplemented in future with more evolved devices giving access to the many novelties that technological progress has in store for the coming years: from a complete multimedia system to satellite navigation. In addition to which there is a whole range of services that will make all your journeys more comfortable, safer and easier.

The ‘Blue&Me’ device offered on the Grande Punto incorporates a sophisticated hands-free system with voice recognition that enhances driving safety and respects the law because the driver can use the system without taking his hands off the wheel. The system allows drivers with a Bluetooth® mobile phone to use the telephone even if it is in a jacket or a bag, automatically lowering the radio volume (when this is on) and routing the interlocutor’s voice through the stereo speakers. The system is also extremely compatible with all cell phones currently on the market and can be updated to comply with new standards and future telephones.

The hands-free function on the 159 Sportwagon is built into the car and the control keys are positioned on the steering wheel for immediate, safe access to the system; the driver can find a number in his phone book by scrolling the control panel display, or ‘mute’ the call for confidentiality.

One interesting feature is the fact that the mobile phone only has to be registered with the system once. It is also possible to transfer one’s personal phone book to the car, automatically updating it every time the system recognises a cell phone.

Privacy is guaranteed because access is only granted to the phone book if the telephone registered with the system is in the car. The number or name of the caller is shown on the display if it is in the phone book and the number can be called ‘vocally’ by dictating the numbers or pronouncing the name if it has been memorised.

The evolved voice recognition process means that the voice does not have to be ‘learned’, and the device is able to memorise up to 5 cell phones at the same time, allowing immediate use of the hands-free system by several users of the same car; and programming can obviously be modified whenever it is necessary. And finally, the hands-free system with voice recognition can also reproduce a ‘personal’ call tone using the radio speakers.

These are the features of the hands-free system with voice recognition, but the innovative ‘Blu&Me’ on the Grande Punto offers more: it allows the motorist to listen to his favourite music when it is recorded on a mobile phone, one of the new smart phones, on an MP3 player or on a USB pen drive. This is made possible by a USB port positioned in the glove compartment, to which any digital device with a similar connection can be connected, and musical audio files (MP3, WMA and WAV) can be reproduced directly through the stereo system. And because all the information is visible on the instrument panel display, the client can scroll through the system archive (divided by type, album, artist, etc.) either vocally or using the steering wheel controls, and select the piece he wants to listen to by the controls on the steering wheel.

The Grande Punto Rally Super 2000

In the Racing area of the stand, visitors can admire the Grande Punto Rally Super 2000 with its four wheel drive engineering and distinctive three-coat Pearl white paintwork. The car is also equipped with a 2000 cc aspirated engine that develops a maximum power output of some 280 bhp – the Grande Punto Rally Super 2000 will be a contender in various national and international Rally Championships.

The Grande Punto ‘Need For Speed’

The second area, dedicated to videogames, features a Grande Punto outfitted with the special ‘Need For Speed’ kit (based on the well-known racing videogame) that includes aluminium pedals, sports exhaust tailpipe, sideskirts, special bumpers at front and rear, roof spoiler, roof bars, 17 alloys and a Hi-Fi system designed to connect to an I-Pod.

Equipped with the new 90 bhp 1.3 Multijet with variable geometry turbine, the Grande Punto ‘Need for Speed’ is the outcome of an original collaboration agreement between Fiat and Electronic Arts (EA), world leader in the videogame field. Visitors to the stand will be able to try the second version of ‘Need For Speed’, the biggest-selling car racing game in the world (version one sold more than 15 million copies) that features the unexpected participation of a Grande Punto car. And visitors will also be able to admire the real life version of the car in the game, which will shortly be available from dealers to satisfy those who want to enjoy something more substantial than a virtual racing car.

All the model’s strong points

With the Grande Punto, Fiat aims to repeat the historical success of the previous model, without following in its footsteps. Although in theory the car belongs to segment B, its size, equipment and characteristics actually represent an alternative to many segment C models.

The Grande Punto is therefore unique in the world panorama, designed and built to be the new benchmark in design terms, introducing a concept of larger dimensions. The model also meets safety and quality standards that are particularly high for its segment, it offers the best range of diesel engines and it also offers a very competitive price/content ratio. As a result of all these features, the Grande Punto expresses three fundamental qualities: good looks, solidity and sparkle.

The result is a car that embodies the passion, and the styling and construction capabilities of a brand that was founded over a century ago. Fiat’s heritage is all this, coupled with the work and professional pride of the thousands of people – engineers, workers and managers – who have succeeded one another in the factories and offices and on the racetracks. Here we can see the roots of the inimitable personality that marks out a Fiat from all the other cars on the roads. There has always been a Fiat car for the people who first realised that the car was an irreplaceable means of individual mobility, and then learned to appreciate cars that are good-looking, reliable and enjoyable to drive, but above all at an accessible price. And the Grande Punto is no exception. In fact it sets new styling, safety and comfort parameters for this category, where the world’s best manufacturers are all vying for space. Suffice it to say that the compact segment represents 26% of the Western European car market, in other words, the ‘core’ of the market, with about 3,750,000 cars sold a year. This is even more the case in Italy, where this category accounts for 37% of the market, made up 56% of petrol engines and 44% of diesels.

In order to achieve and maintain the lead in this market bracket, the Grande Punto must make a real leap forward in conceptual terms. Only a few years ago, a car with these dimensions, comfort and equipment would have been considered a family car and certainly not a compact.

Which is why only a brand like Fiat could have swept away the classic categories to dictate times and methods, once again setting trends and introducing innovative concepts and products. The latest arrival from Fiat takes a generation leap forward compared to the previous model, as the Punto did in relation to the Uno when it was launched in 1993, and as the Uno had done in relation to the 127. The name lives on, as a wonderful legacy of a car that has been appreciated by 6 million customers with different tastes, ages, nationalities and social origins.

The three wining qualities of the new model

Developed by Italdesign-Giugiaro together with the Fiat Style Centre, the styling of the Grande Punto stands out in the current automotive scene for the beauty of the exterior line, which is modern, elegant and distinctly ‘Italian’, a ‘Mediterranean’ stylistic language where the tapered rounded lines seem to be inspired by the sports cars of the Fifties and Sixties. Like the exterior, the interior of the Grande Punto represents the most advanced expression of Italian styling, due to the quality of the materials and the care that has gone into every detail. The result is a well-lit, welcoming, practical environment.

This is a car created to thrill, but also to express the solidity that comes from superb quality standards. This is borne out by extremely high safety standards, attention to detail that is unusual in this market bracket, and exceptional comfort. This impression is confirmed by the car’s external dimensions which put it at the peak of its category: it is 403 cm long, 168 cm wide, 149 cm tall and has a wheelbase of 2.51 metres, measurements which translate into an extraordinary amount of interior roominess. The Grande Punto is clearly a car of superior quality: from the very first stages of the project, the team working on it pursued very high quality standards, drawing on a stringent engineering process, based on a very strong platform, while it applied the most advanced, innovative reliability methodologies throughout the model’s development and industrialisation.

The Grande Punto is also agile and enjoyable to drive in all situations. A sparkle derived primarily from its engines, which combine excellent performance, low fuel consumption and absolute respect for the environment (they are all Euro 4). There are three petrol engines (the 65 bhp 1.2 8v, the 77 bhp 1.4 8v and the new 95 bhp 1.4 16v), and four turbodiesels: the 120 and 130 bhp 1.9 Multijet, the 75 bhp 1.3 Multijet 16v and the new 90 bhp 1.3 Multijet 16v with variable geometry turbo.

‘Value’ as a key to success

All the ingredients are in place to repeat the sales success of the previous model. Any car’s success is the result of a lucky break, a flash of stylistic intuition backed by research into new taste trends, emerging customer needs and projections relating to market trends. And then this complicated equation is judged by the harshest yardstick: time. True success will stand the test of time. The Punto is living proof of this: from 1993 to the present day, over six million people in Europe have bought the car, and twenty-five international panels have awarded it prizes. Even as the Grande Punto makes its debut, manufacture and marketing of the current Punto will continue, with petrol, diesel and methane versions, and particularly advantageous offers.

The Grande Punto now plays the same trump card as the previous model: listening to customers and allowing the product to grow in accordance with their wishes. The new car complies with the first requirement that any customer expresses when first buying a car because it offers value first and foremost. This has always been one of the strengths of the Fiat Punto, which has led its segment, one where a huge number of new cars have been launched in recent years. The competition is obviously very stiff and ready to do battle with all the means at their disposal. But the model has always stood its ground. It still competes at the highest level and offers something extra: safety, value for money and balance between performance/fuel consumption without forgetting the continuous quest for innovation. And this is how Fiat sees itself: an Italian company that builds cars with original styling and a wealth of smart solutions that are therefore capable of guaranteeing a better quality of everyday life. And today the Grande Punto takes up the baton with the precise goal of respecting this ideal commitment made to motorists.

Moving Passion

The communications policy planned for this original model addresses a young, dynamic public using a fresh, immediate language. One result is ‘Mr. Dot’, a cheerful P-shaped pictogram which changes appearance according to the situation: from a driver to a little man on skis, for example. There are 50 possible transformations, each with a different personality, the expression of the concept of ‘moving passion’ that underpins the Grande Punto project. If on one hand the new model represents the passion shown by Fiat and its employees for cars, speed and racing, on the other, it is also the spirit of a customer who is attracted by the values of beauty, dynamism, colour, passion and movement. Nineteen versions have been created, by combining 2 body types (3 or 5 doors), 4 outfits, 7 engines, 13 body-colours and 12 types of interior, all at a very attractive price. The Grande Punto is also ‘great’ because of its price, which is almost identical to that of today’s Punto with the difference that, for the same investment, customers will enjoy a car at the peak of its category containing lavish, cutting-edge equipment.

A specific response to every need

Styling, emotion, comfort, safety and a good price: these are the guidelines along which the Grande Punto was developed; a car created for young adults, the very young, new active women, and the smaller families of today. To meet the requirements of this heterogeneous public, the Grande Punto proposes typically Italian styling, the symbol of character and refinement, in two bodies: a 3-door version that is more aggressive and dynamic, and will appeal above all to the young, and a 5-door version that exalts the balance between styling and comfort, performance and safety, access and distinctive looks.

Both versions share a broad, comprehensive range with four specification levels, each capable of satisfying different customers who share the same youthful, dynamic spirit. The Active outfit addresses the younger driver, people full of vitality with an open, flexible mentality; the Dynamic version is the right response for those who combine an emotional and a rational approach, while the Grande Punto Emotion is ideal for the motorist who is looking for the equipment of a higher category and outstanding comfort in a compact car. And last but not least, the Sport version will certainly appeal to customers who want excellent performance and distinctive styling features. So it is not exaggerated to state that everyone will find the Grande Punto they seek, customising it with the many options on offer, and taking advantage of the innovative financial and insurance services created specifically for the model, plus the many interesting accessories available from the Accessory range.

Safety at the peak of its segment

The Grande Punto was awarded the prestigious five star rating by the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) and is at the top of its category for safety. It is also the only segment B car homologated for pedestrian protection (3 stars), with 3 stars for child protection.

Fifteen thousand hours of mathematical modelling, 60 crash tests, one hundred simulations on a HyGe slide and two hundred tests on components and subsystems. These statistics demonstrate Fiat’s deep-rooted commitment to making the Fiat Punto one of the safest cars in its segment and also in the field of motoring as a whole. In fact, the new model represents the state-of-the-art as far as passive safety is concerned. This total protection begins with devices specifically devoted to safety: up to 7 airbags, two of which are of the Multistage type (six are standard on the Dynamic and Emotion specifications); three-point seat-belts with pretensioners and load limiters, five head-restraints and the FPS fire prevention system. And it goes on to include a new chassis designed to absorb impact with maximum efficacy. The service continues with occupant protection provided by the body, bonnet, doors and facia beam. And we must not overlook the contribution to passive safety provided by other features such as the seats or door panels, which have also been designed with a view to their behaviour in the case of accidents.

The Grande Punto also benefits from the most sophisticated electronic systems to control the car’s dynamic performance. These are implemented to increase its dynamic limits and are not intrusive for the driver but intended to improve safety. Examples include ABS with an electronic brake force distributor (EBD) and the sophisticated Electronic Stability Program that intervenes under extreme conditions when car stability is at risk, and helps the driver control the car. The ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) system, an integral part of the ESP, optimises traction at any speed with the aid of the brakes and engine control. And MSR (Motor Schleppmoment Regelung) cuts in during sudden speed changes while changing down to restore torque to the engine and prevent the drive wheels from over-revving. The Grande Punto can also be fitted with the Hill Holder system that helps the driver during hill starts and HBA, which automatically increases brake circuit pressure during emergency stopping.

The environment-friendly versions

The Multipla MY Emotion-Natural Power

The Multipla MY 2006 makes its debut in Geneva, with new styling that is consistent with the family feeling of the latest models. A number of changes have been made to this appealing, friendly car to make the external styling more attractive and to improve the quality of the interiors in line with the latest market trends. The new range now includes an original Emotion version with a number of refined stylistic details which the public can admire for the first time at the Swiss Show.

On the outside, the new Multipla MY has a distinctive ‘Chrome-Shadow’ grille which reiterates the family feeling of recent Fiat models, and the lower part of the headlights is now transparent, a detail that enhances the technological impact of these stylish lights. The colour range for the paintwork has also been greatly extended with the introduction of 8 new shades that help to underline the car’s unmistakable, original design.

Styling details that make the car even more elegant and up-to-date, and which are repeated on the inside. The Fiat Multipla MY has a refined interior ambience, which sets off the new furnishings which are more elegant but remain informal and practical. For example, the technological, modern look of the ‘stainless steel’ fabrics that upholster the seats, door panels and facia (available in light blue and sand); the special chromatic treatment (anthracite) for the facia, the upholstery of the lower part of the door panels, the carpets and plastic elements; and finally, the graphics of the instrument panel are also new.

Obviously all the strong points of the existing model have been retained: six comfortable seats and the compactness of a saloon; a strong personality that stands out in today’s motoring scene; flexible use and extraordinary versatility. The Multipla MY is a car with a style all of its own, Fiat’s reply to the demand for plenty of interior space in a car that is little more than four metres long; in fact it is the only car in this market bracket that can guarantee a 3+3 seat layout as well as a capacious luggage compartment. And the model’s particular architecture ensures that it handles like an MPV in every respect, thanks to the extra height compared to segment B and C cars, which modifies the driver’s sitting position with respect to the road, making for easier access and better domination of the road. For this reason, this appealing people-mover provides a unique interpretation of the themes of styling, versatility, interior space and environmental friendliness. And it does so by proposing extremely ‘intelligent’ solutions in the fields of ergonomics, use of space and engineering.

On the stand is an Emotion version, with Vasari Pearl exterior paintwork, 17 alloys and polished black window and mirror frames. Inside it features refined two-tone (cream and black) leather upholstered seats, and black leather on the steering wheel and gear lever knob.

What is more, the Multipla MY Emotion exhibited in Geneva also proposes dual methane and petrol fuel feed, with two independent systems. It normally runs on methane, only using the petrol supply during the ignition stage, transferring immediately and automatically to the other system. This ensures that the petrol supply system is kept efficient, and it only intervenes when the gas in the cylinders is almost finished. However the driver can change from methane to petrol and back again whenever he wishes, by pressing a button on the facia.

The engine that powers the Multipla MY Natural Power is a 1.6 Torque 16-valve unit that adopts a phased sequential Multipoint system. This is a technical feature that enables the engine to obtain the same advantages as a petrol engine even with a methane supply. The car guarantees excellent driveability: with the methane supply, the maximum power output is 68 kW (92 bhp) at 5750 rpm, with torque of 130 Nm (13.3 kgm) at 4000 rpm. When it is running on petrol, these values are 76 kW (103 bhp) at 5750 rpm and 145 Nm (14.8 kgm) at 4000 rpm respectively. What is more, the Natural Power version is very fuel-efficient and emissions are also safe and minimal. This permits the motorist to drive even in areas of the town where traffic is restricted (because of an excess of polluting emissions), and to park it even in a lock-up. What about consumption? With methane drive, the Multipla Natural Power returns 7.5 kg/100 km (on the urban cycle), 5.0 kg/100 km (out of town) and 5.9 kg/100 km (on the combined cycle); with petrol (the tank holds 38 litres), the values are 11.9 l/100 km, 7.5 l/100 km and 9.1 l/100 km. The natural gas is stored in three steel cylinders under the floorpan, which have a total capacity of 164 litres and can contain 26 kg of methane, guaranteeing a maximum range of 520 kilometres (440 km in the combined cycle and 345 km in the urban cycle). On top of which, performance is very good: the new environment-friendly Multipla has a top speed of 168 km/h running on petrol (157 km/h with methane), and accelerates from 0 a 100 km/h in 13.5 seconds (petrol) or 16 seconds (methane).

The Panda MultiEco

The Panda MultiEco show-car makes its world debut in Geneva; Fiat sees this unit as the future of cars with a low environmental impact: the concept car represents the most advanced frontier achievable in terms of emissions and consumption, synergically combining technologies that already exist or are ready for industrialisation.

The show-car combines an innovative ‘powertrain’ architecture – an engine with dual petrol/methane fuel supply, MTA transmission and BAS device – with the use of eco-compatible materials (recycled, recyclable or of natural origin) for the exterior and interior. The result is made even more interesting by the painstaking optimisation of the aerodynamics and a significant weight reduction.

In detail: the Panda MultiEco is equipped with a dual-fuel (methane and petrol) FIRE engine – future developments will also make it possible to use a methane/hydrogen mix – combined with a BAS (Belt-driven Alternator-Starter) device and a Dualogic robotised gearbox.

The first device, which is at once an electric generator and starter motor, makes for easier starting and more efficient electricity generation. The innovative MTA (Manual Transmission Automated) gearbox on the other hand makes for optimal management of gear changes and outstanding mechanical efficiency.

The automated transmission paves the way for ‘intelligent’ management of the on/off state of the engine. By controlling the clutch, the system disengages the internal combustion engine from the transmission whenever drive is not required and the engine can be turned off. It is restarted, immediately and silently, by a reversible electric motor, known as BAS (Belt-driven Alternator-Starter) which replaces the alternator on the belt circuit and performs the dual role of starter motor and electric generator.

What is more, in addition to its exclusive built-in propulsion system, the Panda MultiEco incorporates interesting improvements in the fields of aerodynamics (Cd of 0.295) and weight reduction. Suffice it to say that the show-car weighs 92 kg less than the methane version that will soon go into production, thanks to the use of a number of components (engine bonnet and tailgate) made with thermoplastic materials, the adoption of ‘stripped’ seats which are pre-assembled in pairs on carriers, and of cylinders to store the methane made of high-yield steel and carbon fibre.

The Panda MultiEco is fitted with Pirelli tyres that are state of the art; they have an innovative pattern and constant-wear tread, and a mix that has low hysteresis but guarantees the same elasticity and grip on both wet and dry surfaces.

The innovative lay-out of the methane cylinder storage system is unique for a city car, thanks to the Panda’s modular floorpan (the CNG cylinders are positioned under the floorpan, one longitudinally in the central tunnel, and the other, with a capacity of 50 litres, transversally under the rear floor), guaranteeing a methane range of over 350 km without detracting from the roominess of the car or the luggage compartment in any way.

The combination of these solutions, which were developed within the Fiat Group (Fiat Auto, Fiat Powertrain Technologies and Centro Ricerche Fiat), together with the use of proprietary control strategies, means that the new show-car guarantees a drastic reduction in emissions.

CO2 emissions in particular are 42% lower than those of the petrol version in the urban cycle and 32% lower in the NEDC cycle, reaching a value of 90 g/km in this case. In terms of emissions, this result is added to the benefits of methane propulsion, which is the only solution realistically possible today that could help to significantly raise the quality of exhaust emissions, particularly those of substances responsible for photochemical smog, with a considerable impact on human health. The other advantages for customers are lower consumption and the lower cost of methane, which therefore means a substantial reduction in the relative cost per kilometre (-63%).

To sum up, the Panda MultiEco is further proof of Fiat’s commitment to the protection of the environment, not only to meet even more stringent European limits in future but also to achieve a significant reduction in consumption without penalising the performance or functionality of the car. In the short-term, this commitment will take the form of the launch of the Panda Natural Power, the new methane and petrol dual-fuel version, later in the year.

Prestige and versatility

The new Croma

The new Croma, a state-of-the-art station wagon, borrows its name from the historical model that became a benchmark for medium-high range saloons from 1985 to 1994 and sold more than 450,000 units. Then, as now, the New Croma is defined by the ‘substance’ of the concepts it expresses: great interior roominess for outstanding comfort; technological innovation in the diesel engine field and, lastly, superior quality for a standard production model. And we should also mention that the new car was also recently awarded a prestigious five-star ranking by Euro NCAP.

The Fiat Croma is a car designed and built to the very highest standards of quality, interior space, technological innovation in the diesel engine field and in the field of safety. Hence the model’s sales success: the car has conquered Europe with more than 33,000 orders since its launch. And there is more. The sales mix is very interesting, in terms of the specification levels and engines. Firstly, 50% of customers opted for one of the best-equipped versions: the Croma Emotion accounted for 40% of sales while the remaining 10% chose the top-of-the-range Must specification, which includes 18 alloys, leather interiors and the generously-glazed Sky Dome sunroof. Customer preferences also confirmed the Fiat Croma’s worth and excellence as far as engines are concerned. For the Multijet turbodiesel in particular, 60% of customers chose the 150 bhp 1.9 Multijet 16v engine while 10% chose the powerful 200 bhp 2.4 Multijet engine. Lastly, versions with 5 or 6-speed automatic transmissions accounted for 25% of Fiat Croma orders even though the segment average is some 10%.

The ‘Comfort Wagon’ is here

The new Croma was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, and it introduces an original ‘stylistic’ formula with innovative architecture and smart features. As the designer explained: ‘In the last 20 years, technological progress and market expectations have evolved rapidly. We just have to think of safety and the work involved in inserting airbags in the most effective points, the services offered by electronics in terms of individual comfort, active and passive safety, and of information. I would say that, compared to the 3-box model of 1985, the new Croma has basically taken onboard the lessons learned with people-movers - tall cars on which the space can be interpreted freely according to circumstances - while it maintains the image of a very comfortable saloon: in a word, a Comfort Wagon.’

This premise has created a highly original car that leads its class in certain areas: for example, where access is concerned, thanks to the flat floor and raised H-points at the front and rear. But the car fears no comparison in terms of roominess, as we can see from the generous space above the passengers’ heads, the distance between the rows of seats (the best in its category) and the raised driving position that guarantees better control over the road and better external visibility. In addition to the fact that the glazed area on the new model is one of the best in its segment (3.254 m2) and guarantees excellent acoustic and vibration comfort, thanks to careful analysis of the passenger compartment and special suspension settings. And finally, certain outfits propose an innovative modular system for the luggage compartment which adapts perfectly to a wide range of individual needs.

Together these features make it the roomiest car in its segment: the new Croma comes with one body type, 475 centimetres long, 177 cm wide and 160 cm tall, and a wheelbase of 270 cm, measurements that translate into an extraordinary amount of interior roominess. The new model is in line with the best competition where length and width are concerned, but about 10 centimetres taller.

Original outside, spacious and silent inside. The new Croma is a car created to satisfy people with different needs, tastes and lifestyles, who all have something in common: the desire for a comfortable car. For those who seek outstanding performance, the Croma offers a powerful 200 bhp 2.4 Multijet engine (combined with a 6-speed automatic sequential gearbox) that sets the car at the top of its category for its specific power rating: 83 bhp/litre.

Class-topping Multijet engines

It is where the engines are concerned that the new Croma reveals the second aspect of its substance: in addition to the two sparkling petrol engines (the 2.2 16v that delivers 147 bhp, and the 1.8 16v delivering 140 bhp), the model offers three Multijet turbodiesel engines (the 120 or 150 bhp 1.9, and the new 2.4 litre unit that delivers 200 bhp), yet another demonstration of Fiat Auto’s technological superiority in this field. The Fiat Group has set numerous records in the field of diesel cars, starting with the Croma TDI which was the world’s first direct injection diesel car back in 1986.

The new Croma is offered with 5 different gearboxes to exploit the performance of its engines in full: in brief, all the petrol engines come with a 5 speed gearbox with an option to fit an automatic sequential gearbox on the 2.2 16v. All the diesel engines come with 6-speed gearboxes with an automatic sequential gearbox as an alternative to the manual unit on the 150 1.9 Multijet and as the only choice on the powerful 200 bhp 2.4 Multijet 20V.

Superlative quality

Now we move on to the third aspect of the car’s substance: quality. The Fiat Croma offers very high quality standards that are implemented from the initial design stages. During the various stages of research, prototypes cover more than 3 million kilometres to test out the car over all types of route and in all weather conditions. The Cassino plant manufacturing process was tested before the normal development stages so that process checks could be carried out directly on the plant production lines. The quality control checks, already stringent, were taken a stage further by introducing a 100 km test route for 100% of pre-production cars.

‘Five-star’ safety

The Fiat Croma won the prestigious five-star Euro NCAP rating to confirm Fiat Auto’s concern for all aspects relating to driver and passenger protection. This major accolade rewards above all the work of the designers who examined all possible accident types: front impact, side impact, roll-over, shunting and fire. They also considered the different speeds at which crashes can take place, the different types of obstacle and the safeguarding of occupants with a very wide range of physical features. All in all, they logged 18,000 hours of mathematical modelling, 120 crash tests, 100 crash simulations on a HyGe slide, 200 tests on components and subsystems, 10 new types of performance specifications and test procedures and 8 codesign suppliers with special passive safety facilities (2 of which were engaged solely in safety device design and development).

An in-depth examination of all these parameters led to a set of technical solutions that make the Fiat Croma one of the safest cars on the market. This is ensured by the many sophisticated devices that the model offers as standard, beginning with the passive safety features: 2 dual stage front airbags, 2 front sidebags, 2 curtain-bags and a knee bag for the driver (rear sidebags are an option). Other standard features include front seat-belts with pretensioner and load limiter and an anti-whiplash device on the front head-restraint (to minimise whiplash).

The new vehicle ensures such consistent, predictable on-road behaviour that the driver can get away with making mistakes and emerge from sticky situations with aplomb. The Fiat Croma offers a braking system with outstanding performance while also benefiting from the most sophisticated electronic devices for controlling the car’s dynamic behaviour: from braking to traction. Examples include ABS with an electronic brake force distributor (EBD) and the sophisticated Electronic Stability Program (ESP) that cuts in under extreme conditions when car stability is at risk and also helps the driver control the car.

Depending on the version, the ESP offered on the Fiat Croma is complemented by additional systems: ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) to limit drive wheel slip when road grip is poor; MSR (Motor Schleppmoment Regelung), which cuts in during sudden speed changes while changing down to restore torque to the engine and prevent the drive wheels over-revving; HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistance) a hydraulic device that operates during emergency braking and, lastly, the Hill-holder which helps the driver during hill starts.

An extensive range that offers good value for money

The new Croma offers value for money first of all, expressed by an extensive range with numerous outfits that allow a wide choice of customisation and advantages that increase progressively with the higher specification levels. For example, if you choose the second specification, the Dynamic, you can benefit from an advantage equal to 40% of the value of the additional features present on this version.

Every outfit has been designed with the right level of equipment, with materials chosen specifically to create an ideal, comfortable environment modelled to the customer’s requirements. One example will suffice: the vast glazed surface of the double opening sunroof that is standard equipment on some versions. Each outfit offers a choice of two shades (dark grey or beige), right up to the leather upholstery which, in addition to the two existing shades, is also available in a new ‘hide’ shade, combined with a monochrome facia and burnished trims.

You can choose your New Croma from all these versions. All represent good value for money and, above all, are heirs to an automotive concept that Fiat has helped significantly to create and develop: large saloons with stylish, practical looks.

The New Croma adds a host of sophisticated devices and systems to these winning features that make it a new benchmark in its segment. Examples include: ESP, Xenon headlights, anti-whiplash seats (to minimise the whiplash effect), and as many as nine airbags (in the field of safety); the advanced satellite navigation system (CONNECT Nav+) and the Hi-Fi system with eight speakers and sub-woofer (in the field of entertainment and info-mobility), Cruise Control and a sequential automatic transmission (for stress-free driving); 4 special 16 and 18 alloy wheel designs which impart an individual stylistic personality to the car.

Fiat Idea MY

Facing daily life with determination and independence and being able to count on a reliable and versatile ally – as only the Fiat Idea can be. The Geneva Motor Show would not be complete without this compact MPV, now facelifted outside and inside. The Fiat Idea MY offers a host of new styling features (that differ according to the specification) plus content that will satisfy even the most demanding customers. Examples include the new 90 bhp 1.3 Multijet engine and some particularly attractive options such as leather trimmed seats, steering wheel and gear knob.

Italian elegance and style

To begin with, all versions will be available with 4 new body-colours (two blues and two greys) and a number of other changes that make the front even more elegant and clean-cut, emphasised by the way the shiny, reflective parts contrast with the body shade. Examples include the body-coloured side strips, while the grille background is painted in a Chrome Shadow shade. These sophisticated good looks are enhanced by the transparency of the lower part of the front headlights to emphasise the attractive high-tech appearance of these authentic objects of design.

The protective strip on the front bumper is body-coloured while the central grille on the tail-lights is now chrome. The changes at the front are neatly complemented at the rear by new exterior features that visually accentuate the car’s shoulders to make it look more like a typical SUV.
Only the Dynamic and Emotion versions reveal changes at the side. The exterior door pillar trim is now glossy while the exterior handles and door side mouldings are body-coloured and now feature a shiny chrome insert.

Well-proportioned, practical interiors

While the changes to the exterior of the new model do not alter the shape so greatly appreciated by the public, more changes have been made inside to make the passenger compartment more stylish. For example, a darker shade emphasises the quality of the material while satin finished chrome and glossy black parts add gleaming highlights.

The air outlet flow directors, compartment openings, interior handles and instrument keys are chrome while the dashboard and gear gaiter frames are glossy black (on Dynamic and Emotion versions, the gearknob is customised with a satin finished chrome boss).

The trims and upper part of the facia are also painted black (as a tasteful match for the dark grey of the lower part and the central console), as are the steering wheel, steering column, radio, climate control system and the lower part of the door panels and surrounds. The same shade has also been used for the carpet in the passenger compartment, parcel shelf and boot.

The Fiat Idea MY offers a sophisticated environment with a very opulent appearance, a passenger compartment that has evidently benefited from a stylish new trim but still succeeds in remaining informal and practical. The first specification levels introduce three brand new seat shades that match the panel fabric. The Dynamic and Emotion specifications are trimmed with a new high-tech, up-to-date looking ‘stainless steel’ fabric on the panels and seats (available in black/light blue, black/bronze and black/steel shades), enhanced by welded motifs and black side panels in fabric (Dynamic) or leather (Emotion).

All the attributes of the previous model

So much for the new features added to the new Fiat Idea MY range. All the model’s distinctive attributes have naturally been retained: a stylish car with simple lines and a generous, practical passenger compartment that can satisfy the widest imaginable need for space without having to compromise on zest and dynamism. That is not all. The compact Fiat MPV confounds the current distinctions between cars of different segments: it is more manageable than a segment C car, roomier and more flexible than a segment B car and more compact than an L1 vehicle. Everything is packed into a little under four metres in length, 1.70 metres in width and 1.66 metres in height.

Original design

In appearance, the Fiat Idea looks solid and safe yet also original and elegant. Its exterior is recognisable for its broad shoulders and generous wheels given extra flair by clean, up-to-date lines of great personality. The smooth shape with no sharp edges conveys an impression of discreet, non-aggressive power and emphasises the welcoming, protective shell-like nature of a passenger compartment that guarantees safety while also promising comfort. Comfort is also offered inside by a versatile passenger compartment that reveals painstaking attention to the tiniest aesthetic and technical details. For example, the sophisticated, well-proportioned design of the cabinetwork and trim weds ergonomic excellence, acoustic comfort and climate control. The result is an ideal environment for travelling in relaxing comfort at all times.

The upper part of the original facia is soft and yielding as on higher segment cars. An original-looking instrument panel is set into the centre while the keys and controls are easy to identify and use. The gearshift is in the middle of the facia close to the steering wheel in a user-friendly position. And there is more: two roomy closed compartments on the facia, large pouches on the panels, a compartment on the ceiling and a roomy console between the front seats. All five seats are comfortable, ergonomic and safe. The configurable back seat can take up different positions in a few swift operations, including an unusual and comfortable couchette position. In this case, the front seats are folded forward to form a table while the rear seat backrest is reclined by more than 45 degrees. The Fiat Idea interior can be changed to meet different requirements due to its folding front seat and two rear seats that slide forward and backward and can be reclined independently.

Flexible, environment-friendly engines

Smart solutions; innovative and elegant design. But the Fiat Idea MY is much more. Think no further than the engines available in the range, all environment-friendly (Euro 4) and lively performers but decidedly thrifty when it comes to fuel consumption (the results are among the best in the car’s category) and represent an effective solution in and out of town. The power units are a 77 bhp 1.4 8v petrol and an 80 bhp 1.2 16v with manual gearbox. Plus a 90 bhp 1.4 16v and the best-selling 1.3 16v Multijet that comes in a 70 bhp version and also a new 90 bhp version, all with a manual gearbox or Dualogic robotised gearbox. Last but not least, the 100 bhp 1.9 Multijet developing 260 Nm of torque. All the engines available on the new model are particularly noiseless due to exhaust systems with optimised layout and configuration.

Segment-beating comfort and safety

Sophisticated technology is also the watchword when it comes to the many devices and systems adopted to ensure maximum in-car wellbeing: an innovative large double Skydome sunroof, a sophisticated automatic climate control system that offers two different temperatures and air distribution patterns simultaneously. Not forgetting that the original compact MPV offers state-of-the-art automatic devices to make driving less of a chore: from Cruise Control to Dualdrive electric power steering.

A car that must be experienced, therefore, that is a real thrill to drive and a pleasure to be on board in any situation. Simply climb aboard the Fiat Idea to discover the special variety of emotional and physical wellbeing you feel when you encounter plenty of space at all times and, most importantly, exactly where you want it. It means being able to get into and out of the car easily and conveniently and, once you are seated, being surrounded by an airy, environment lit by oceans of glass. To achieve this extraordinary level of comfort, our designers applied cutting edge ergonomic criteria from the development stage. The outcome is outstanding results obtained for the Fiat Idea’s basic ergonomic functions: roominess, driving posture, accessibility, visibility and reconfigurability. Suffice it to say that driver height can vary from 1.50 to 2.00 metres, a segment record. The shoulder room in the front amounts to 1,402 mm, while the rear shoulder room is 1,365 mm (both measurements are among the best in the category). And the passenger room coefficient is 99.5%, one of the best percentages in this market band. Nor must we forget that the luggage compartment is one of the roomiest in its category (320 litres). If you still do not have enough space, simply fold the rear seat down for an outstanding load capacity: 1420 litres measured at the roof.

Last but not least, the Fiat Idea MY is one of the safest cars in its segment. The model offers up to 6 airbags (front with two activation stages, sidebags and curtain-bags that protect the rear passengers too); adjustable front seat-belts (with pretensioner and load limiter) and three point rear belts (including the centre seat). The Fiat Idea MY is also well-equipped for active safety, with ABS and EBD as standard. ESP can be added as an option, complete with ASR, MSR, a Hill Holder for easier hill starts and HBA, an electronic aid to emergency stops.
