BMW's Model Initiative Continues

Entering the 2006 model year, BMW is continuing its full-scale model initiative with the same unlimited momentum. The Company is introducing new models with high-performance and, at the same time, highly efficient engines in nearly all model series. The range of new models and features extends from new entry-level engines in the 3 and 5 Series - the 318i, 318d, and 520d - all the way to the new V8 power units in the 550i and 650i developing 270 kW/ 367 hp together with muscular torque of no less than 490 Nm or 361 lb-ft.

A further highlight is the long-wheelbase version of the BMW 7 Series now available for the first time in the guise of the 730Ld and boasting a very powerful and economical straight-six diesel. The BMW 745d now has an upgraded engine with even more power and torque (242 kW/330 hp and, respectively, 750Nm/553 lb-ft).

New colours, a wide range of new features and attractive M sports packages offer the customer an even wider range of choice in fulfilling his - or her - individual wishes and requests.

BMW's innovative xDrive all-wheel-drive system helps to meet growing demand for models with all-wheel drive for superior handling and behaviour on the road. Featured not only in the X3 and X5, xDrive offers a supreme standard of driving dynamics, traction and active safety all in one. This technology is featured both in the all-wheel-drive models of the new 3 Series as well as the BMW 5 Series now also comprising the 530xd.

BMW is widely acknowledged as the benchmark in diesel engine technology. Indeed, BMW's extremely dynamic diesel engines excel through their high standard of power and performance, exemplary running smoothness, and all-round economy. And now BMW is becoming one of the first manufacturers to offer a maintenance-and additive-free particle filter throughout almost its entire range of diesel models.

To reflect its status as the leader in technology, BMW is also introducing BMW Night Vision and BMW High-Beam Assist, two new driver assistance systems further enhancing active safety to an even higher standard than before. Additional innovations now entering series production include special comfort and safety functions incorporated in BMW's superior DSC Dynamic Stability Control System.

The new assistance systems High-Beam Assist and BMW Night Vision are likewise making their debut respectively this autumn and presumably as of fourth quarter 2005. At the same time BMW - as one of the first manufacturers - offers a complete range of particle filters for both new and many used diesel models.

Reinforcing the BMW 1 Series: the BMW 130i.

Starting in autumn, the new top model in the BMW 1 Series, the 130i, is enlarging BMW's overall model range. And indeed, the new 3.0-litre straight-six (195 kW/265 hp, 315 Nm/232 lb-ft) offers truly outstanding performance in the compact segment.

The BMW 130i accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds, with top speed limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph. On the road, only the 17-inch rims in V-spoke design, chrome-plated bars in the BMW kidney grille, and the dual exhaust pipes with chrome-plated tail ends show the connoisseur that this is a very special BMW 1 Series.

Beginning this autumn, the BMW 1 Series is also available with the BMW Assist telematics function and the BMW Online mobile internet portal. And last but certainly not least, BMW's Adaptive Headlights are now also available in the compact range.

Inside the car, features such as sports seats, the M leather steering wheel, M footrest and entry trim strips in BMW M Design as well as special aluminium trim strips ensure a supreme touch of exquisite sportiness and style.

BMW 3 Series: New engines for the 3 Series Saloon.

The 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel in the BMW 330d develops maximum output of 170 kW/231 hp and equally impressive torque of 500 Nm/369 lb-ft. And despite its dynamic performance, with acceleration to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph, the 330d Saloon requires just 6.5 ltr/100km (equal to 43.5 mpg Imp) in the composite EU cycle.

Developing maximum output of 90 kW/122 hp and peak torque of 280 Nm/206 lb-ft, the new 318d Saloon rounds off BMW's diesel range at the lower end. Through its four-cylinder power unit, the 318d is most certainly an economical athlete: With fuel consumption of just 5.6 ltr/100 km or 50.4 mpg Imp in the composite EU cycle, the car's performance is quite remarkable, acceleration to 100 km/h coming in 10.6 seconds, from 80-120 km/h in fourth gear in 9.3 seconds, and with top speed of 206 km/h or 152 mph.

The entry-level four-cylinder in the BMW 318i Saloon is based on BMW's 2.0-litre straight-four petrol engine. Maximum output of 95 kW/129 hp, together with peak torque of 180 Nm/133 lb-ft, are quite sufficient for acceleration to 100 km/h in 10.0 sec, acceleration from 80-120 km/h in fourth gear in just 10.9 sec, and a top speed of 208 km/h or 130 mph. Fuel consumption in the composite EU cycle, finally, is just 7.3 ltr/100 km, equal to 38.7 mpg Imp.

Like the engines in all BMWs already in the market, the new power units naturally comply in full with the strict EU4 emission standard.

BMW xDrive now also in the 3 Series.

BMW's six-cylinder 3 Series Saloon and Touring models are now also available with the innovative xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The great advantage of xDrive is that it spreads out drive power in fractions of a second variably and depending on requirements between the two axles, thus giving the 3 Series excellent all-wheel-drive dynamics of the highest standard.

Extra safety when towing a trailer.

In the 3 Series equipped with a trailer towing bracket, the latest generation of BMW's DSC Dynamic Stability Control complete with Trailer Stability Management offers additional safety on the road. This unique system recognises any threat of the car and trailer swaying and automatically takes appropriate counter-measures. DSC with its stabilising intervention in the brakes does not cut in until discreet intervention by Trailer Stability Management is no longer sufficient to avoid a potentially dangerous situation.

The M Sports Package for even more outstanding behaviour.

The optional M Sports Package for the 3 Series Saloon and Touring comprises features such as BMW's sports suspension, the Aerodynamic Package (front and rear air dam and side-sills) with foglamps, as well as exclusive light-alloy wheels (17 or 18 inches) with different-sized tyres front and rear. Top-of-the-range 550i with V8 power unit replacing the 545i.

The upgraded V8 power unit in the new 550i develops maximum output of 270 kW or 367 hp, with superb torque of 490 Nm/361 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm. The 550i accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, completing the interim dash from 80-120 km/h in fourth gear in just 5.2 seconds. Fuel consumption in the EU test cycle, finally, is a modest 11.1 ltr/25.4 mpg Imp, quite unusual for a car of this calibre.

Both eight-cylinder models come as standard with a manual six-speed gearbox. Six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic is available as an option on both models, with BMW's six-speed SMG Sequential Manual Gearbox being reserved to the BMW 550i.

Enhanced fuel economy despite significantly more power in the 530d.

The new straight-six diesel in the BMW 530d develops maximum output of 170 kW/231 hp and peak torque of 500 Nm/369 lb-ft for powerful thrust at all times and in all situations. Reaching a top speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph, the 530d Saloon accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds, while making do with just 6.7 ltr/100 km (42.2 mpg Imp) in the EU cycle.

Like all BMW 5 Series diesels, the 530d meets the requirements of the EU4 emission norm inter alia by means of a diesel particle filter featured as standard.

530xd Saloon/Touring: First 5 Series diesel with all-wheel drive.

The new 530xd is the first BMW 5 Series diesel with all-wheel drive, BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system ensuring truly outstanding all-wheel driving dynamics and agility. The 530xd accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 242 km/h or 150 mph. Average fuel consumption in the EU cycle, in turn, is a mere 7.6 ltr/100km or 37.2 mpg Imp.

520d: Powerful four-cylinder diesel for the BMW Business Class.

Also starting in autumn, BMW's 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel developing maximum output of 120 kW/163 bhp and peak torque of 340 Nm/251 lb-ft will ensure sporting performance on minimum fuel also in the BMW 5 Series:
The 520d Saloon accelerates to 100 km/h in just 8.6 seconds and has a top speed of 223 km/h or 138 mph. At the same time fuel consumption in the composite EU cycle is a mere 5.9 ltr/100km or 47.9 mpg Imp.

The new wheel design in parallel styling comes on both the 18-inch different-sized tyres on the 5 Series Saloon and on the normal 18-inch tyres on the 5 Series Touring.

Extra comfort and safety: New special equipment.

Comfort Access as well as ISOFIX child seat fastening - the latter including the option to deactivate the front passenger airbag - on the front passenger seat have been included additionally in the long list of special equipment available to the truly discerning purchaser. Starting in autumn 2005, the BMW 5 Series Touring is additionally available with BMW's M sports
suspension.

As on the BMW 7 Series, High-Beam Assist enhances both active safety and motoring comfort to a new, unprecedented standard.

BMW 6 Series Coupé and Convertible: Now with a new V8 power unit.

The new BMW 4.8-litre eight-cylinder developing maximum output of 270 kW/367 hp and maximum torque of 490 Nm/361 lb-ft has been carried over from the BMW 750i and is now also featured in the BMW 6 Series Coupé and Convertible. Appropriately named the "BMW 650i", these two new models replace their previous BMW 645Ci counterparts.

Enhanced performance on even less fuel.

BMW 1 Series

New Top-of-the-Range130i and Attractive Options

The BMW 1 Series is entering the 2006 model year with the new top-of-the-range 130i, new special equipment, and the new M Sports Package.

BMW 130i: Sporting performance in an athlete’s body.

Driving pleasure far beyond conventional standards – precisely that is what the new top-of-the-range model in the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 130i, has to offer in the compact range as of autumn 2005. Indeed, the combination of the car’s well-known agile suspension and the new 3.0-litre six-cylinder power unit (195 kW/258 hp, 315 Nm/232 lb-ft) complete with its magnesium housing and VALVETRONIC creates a power machine quite unparallel in the world of motoring.

The BMW 130i is for the most discerning and ambitious customer, the individualist seeking top performance in the lower midrange class. This is the car for the genuine enthusiast who wishes to combine unpretentious superiority with genuine style. The 17-inch rims in V-spoke design developed especially for the 130i, chrome-plated rods in the BMW kidney grille, and the dual tailpipes with their chrome-plated rear ends show the connoisseur that this is indeed a particularly powerful BMW 1 Series.

The BMW 130i accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph, and fuel consumption is a moderate 9.0 litres/100 km or 31.4 mpg Imp in the EU test cycle.

New options for extra comfort and safety on the road.

Over and above the new top model, BMW also offers a whole range of new features as of autumn 2005, making the 1 Series truly unique in every respect: Examples are the attractive M Sports Package, BMW Adaptive Headlights, and – starting now – the diesel particle filter.

The BMW 1 Series is now also available with the BMW Assist telematics service as well as the BMW Online mobile internet portal as new options in the list.

BMW’s innovative Connected Service system is likewise now becoming available, enabling the BMW 1 Series to register independently by short messaging for routine service operations at the workshop. Bluetooth technology in the 1 Series, in turn, allows simple and convenient use of various mobile telephones.

As a result, the BMW 1 Series offers not only a unique driving experience in the compact class, but also, through its driver assistance systems, ranks truly unique versus the competition.

Dynamic, sophisticated, exciting: the M Sports Package.

Starting in September 2005, BMW is offering the M Sports Package in all 1 Series. Developed by BMW M, BMW’s Subsidiary for Specialist Cars, the M Sports Package appeals to the very special customer who wishes to further refine the sporting and agile qualities of his – or her – BMW 1 Series, highlighting the car by way of particular visual features.

In conjunction with M double-spoke light-alloy wheels measuring 17 or 18 inches and running on different-sized tyres front and rear for optimum grip on the road, the specially tuned M sports suspension offers dynamic performance of the highest calibre.

The BMW Aerodynamics Package featuring front and rear air dams as well as side-sills finished in body colour supplements and highlights the particular qualities of the M Sports Package.

Inside the car, sports seats, BMW Individual roof lining in Anthracite, the leather steering wheel, a driver footrest as well as entry trim strips in BMW M Design and special aluminium trim strips ensure an exquisite touch of sportiness and visual performance. High-quality soft nappa leather on the handbrake lever and the extra-short and dynamic shift lever for an even faster and more precise gearshift confirm the supreme standard of the car through the visible and tangible quality of the material.

BMW 3 Series

New Models, All-Wheel Drive and the new M Sports Package

BMW’s best-selling, top-volume model series is entering the new model year with even greater momentum than before, featuring new engines, new transmission, the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, additional features as well as new paintwork and upholstery options. A further new feature is the M Sports Package for both the Saloon and Touring.

Even more diesel power for the 3 Series Saloon.

Half a year after the world debut of the new 3 Series Saloon, BMW is now introducing the 318i entry-level petrol model as well as the two 318d and 330d diesel Saloons rounding off the range.

Like the models already in the market, the new engines naturally comply in full with the strict EU4 emission standard.

Featuring BMW’s 3.0-litre diesel in the 330d, the new Saloon comes with the most powerful diesel engine ever to be seen in the 3 Series: The six-cylinder develops a muscular 170 kW/231 hp at 4,000 rpm and offers truly outstanding power and performance at all speeds: With its maximum torque of 500 Nm/369 lb-ft extending all the way from 1,750–3,000 rpm, the 330d ensures truly opulent power reserves even at very low speeds.

With this kind of power, the 330d Saloon accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph. But despite this outstanding performance, the 330d Saloon consumes just 6.5 litres of diesel fuel on 100 km in the composite EU cycle (equal to 43.5 mpg Imp).

The new 318d Saloon rounds off BMW’s diesel portfolio at the lower end, the four-cylinder power unit developing maximum output of 90 kW/122 hp at 4,000 rpm. Maximum torque of 280 Nm or 206 lb-ft comes from just 1,750–2,000 rpm, the 318d thus accelerating through outstanding flexibility and powerful acceleration at all speeds: Acceleration from 0–100 km/h comes in 10.6 seconds, acceleration from 80–120 km/h in fourth gear in 9.3 seconds, and the car’s top speed is 206 km/h or 128 mph. Fuel consumption in the EU test cycle, finally, is a mere 5.6 litres/100 km or 50.4 mpg Imp.

The entry-level four-cylinder petrol engine in the BMW 318i Saloon.   The 318i is based on BMW’s well-known 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Developing maximum output of 95 kW/129 hp together with180 Nm/133 lb-ft maximum torque, this power unit also ensures sporting performance of the highest calibre leaving the competition in this class far behind: Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/comes in10.0 seconds, acceleration from 80–120 km/h in fourth gear takes just 10.9 seconds.

Top speed of 208 km/h or 129 mph as well as 7.3 litres average fuel consumption on 100 km (38.7 mpg Imp) are further factors speaking in favour of the “smallest 3 Series.

BMW xDrive – more than just a “normal all-wheel-drive system.

Starting now, BMW’s innovative xDrive all-wheel-drive system is available on the six-cylinder Saloon and Touring models. The driver benefits immediately from the distribution of drive power oriented to his individual demands, with the power fed to the wheels adjusting to each driving situation on the road, using information from the wheel sensors as well as data from the DSC driving control system for this purpose.

Given these benefits, xDrive is able to avoid potentially threatening driving situations right from the start, ensuring a significantly higher standard of driving safety and stability as well as superior agility and traction in the four-wheel-drive midrange segment.

Extra safety when towing a trailer.

The BMW 3 Series Saloon and Touring equipped with a trailer towing hook offer additional safety when pulling a trailer thanks to the latest generation of DSC Dynamic Stability control featuring anti-sway logic, that is a special system referred to as Trailer Stability Management able to detect any inclination of the trailer to sway out of control and automatically applying appropriate counter-forces.

This preventive action is taken so quickly and discreetly that the driver will generally not even notice what is happening. Indeed, it is only when this stability management is no longer sufficient to avoid the risk of the trailer swaying out of control that DSC will intervene by applying the brakes on the car.

The trailer hook itself also helps to significantly facilitate driving conditions in routine, everyday situations: All the driver has to do is press a button in the luggage compartment in order to swing the trailer hook out of the underfloor of the 3 Series. Then, once arriving at his destination, the driver just has to return the trailer hook into the underfloor of the car by pressing it down easily and conveniently.

Even more sporting and dynamic with the M Sports Package.

The optional M Sports Package highlights the performance-oriented qualities of the 3 Series Saloon and Touring and enables the customer to personalise his – or her – car to an even higher standard. Among other features, the M Sports Package comprises a sports suspension set-up, the Aerodynamics Package (comprising the front and rear air dam as well as the side-sills), foglamps and exclusive light-alloy wheels (17 or 18 inches) with tyres varying in size front and rear. Inside the car, the Sports Package features in particular special sports seats and the M leather steering wheel. The final features rounding off this very special highlight are aluminium trim strips in Glacier Silver, the M footrest, as well as M entry trim strips.

Benefiting from thumb support contours with special profiles, the optimised sports steering wheel now offers even better grip and at the same time allows an even more relaxed position at the wheel.

Diversity of an even higher standard: new paint, new colours and new upholstery.

New paint options, colours and upholstery enhancing the already wide range of features offered by the BMW 3 Series serve to provide an even higher standard of customisation. Offering Mystic Blue, Deep Green, Barrique Red and Sonora, BMW now provides no less than four new exterior colours, plus a new cloth/leather combination in Blue.

BMW 5 Series

New Models, new Engines, Diesel All-Wheel Drive and Even Greater Product Substance

Introducing three new models, updated engines, a wider range of equipment as well as new colours and options, BMW’s upper midrange segment is making a powerful start into the new model year.

With these new models and features, the BMW 5 Series as of autumn 2005 comprises a total of no less than 13 Saloons and 10 Touring models naturally all fulfilling the EU4 emission standard. All diesel models are equipped with a maintenance-free particle filter.

The model range extends from the 520d with its four-cylinder turbodiesel power unit (120 kW/163 hp) all the way to the four-door M5 sports car featuring a truly unique and outstanding V10 power unit (373 kW/507 hp).

New model: the V8 540i Saloon.

The driving power in the 540i in the genuine sense of the word is the smaller of the two V8 power units featuring VALVETRONIC and double-VANOS introduced for the fist time in the BMW 7 Series in spring 2005. Maximum output from 4,000 cc is 225 kW/306 hp, maximum torque of 390 Nm/287 lb-ft comes at 3,500 rpm.

Fitted as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, the new 540i accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph cut off electronically. Fuel consumption is 11.0 litres/100 km or 25.7 mpg Imp in the EU cycle, certainly a moderate figure for a dynamic V8 saloon of this class.

The level of features and equipment is the same as in the 535d.

Top-of-the-range 550i with an upgraded V8 power unit replacing the 545i.

The V8 power unit featured in the new 550i displaces 4,799 cc and develops maximum output of 270 kW/367 hp, with a mighty 490 Nm/361 lb-ft torque peak at 3,400 rpm. With its manual gearbox, the 550i accelerates to 100 km/h in a fast 5.5 seconds and takes just 5.2 seconds to sprint from 80–120 km/h in fourth gear. Top speed of both the Saloon and Touring is 250 km/h or
155 mph (limited electronically).

Despite the significant increase in the car’s power and performance, fuel consumption of the 550i, at 11.1 litres/100 km or 25.4 mpg Imp in the combined EU cycle, remains almost at the same level as on the former model. And at the same time the 550i now complies with the US ULEV II emission standard, and not “just with the LEV standard, as before (EU4 in Europe).

Both the BMW 540i and the BMW 550i come as standard with a manual six-speed gearbox, six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic being available as an option. The BMW 550i is also available, as yet a further option, with BMW’s six-speed SMG transmission.

Offering this kind of car with a manual gearbox, BMW ranks alone versus its main competitors also in this respect.

530d: Enhanced fuel economy despite a significant increase in power.

The new straight-six diesel engine in the BMW 530d (Saloon/Touring) with its all-aluminium crankcase and third-generation common rail with piezo fuel injection technology, has proven its qualities ever since spring 2005 in the BMW 7 Series. Developing maximum output of 170 kW/231 hp at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 500 Nm/369 lb-ft all the way from 1,750–3,000 rpm, this power unit offers the highest level of output density and the highest torque of any diesel engine within the BMW 5 Series.

The new engine accelerates the 530d Saloon to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds, giving the car a top speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Despite the increase in engine power by 10 kW/13 hp and a flatter, more muscular torque curve, fuel consumption has been reduced to 6.7 litres/100 km (42.2 mpg Imp) in the EU cycle, although engine displacement remains the same as before. And it almost goes without saying that like all BMW 5 Series diesels, the 530d complies in full with the EU4 emission standard thanks to its maintenance-free diesel particle filter fitted as regular equipment.

530xd Saloon/Touring: First 5 Series diesel with all-wheel-drive technology.

The new 530xd is the first BMW 5 Series diesel with all-wheel drive, BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system ensuring truly outstanding driving dynamics and agility.

With its electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch, BMW xDrive distributes the flow of power between the two axles perfectly within fractions of a second. The data and parameters for controlling the flow of power are delivered by the DSC suspension control system as well as the car’s engine management. As a result, xDrive is able to spread out drive forces perfectly between the front and rear wheels for optimum driving stability and traction.

The 530xd accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 242 km/h or 150 mph. Average fuel consumption in the EU cycle is 7.6 ltr/100 km or 37.2 mpg Imp.

520d: The powerful four-cylinder diesel for the BMW Business Class.

Starting in autumn, the by far most powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel (120 kW/163 hp, 340 Nm/251 lb-ft) in the market will ensure particularly efficient dynamics and performance also in the BMW 5 Series.

Equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, the 520d Saloon accelerates to 100 km/h in just 8.6 seconds and has a top speed of 223 km/h or 138 mph. But despite this sporting performance, average fuel consumption in the EU cycle is a mere 5.9 ltr/100 km or 47.9 mpg Imp. Starting in early 2006, the 520d is also to be fitted with BMW’s six-speed automatic transmission featuring Steptronic technology.

Further standard features include ABS, DSC complete with DTC and DBC, a tyre defect indicator, eight airbags, air conditioning, and electric window lifts front and rear, as well as a CD radio. The car’s high level of regular equipment is largely the same as in the BMW 523i.

BMW 5 Series with an even wider range of standard features.

The 2006 model year BMW 5 Series can be distinguished inter alia by their new iDrive Controller now featuring a black leather cover. A further new feature is the remote control of the luggage compartment lid in the Saloon now opening and closing electrically from the driver’s seat at the touch of a button. And last but not least, an engine start/stop button on the instrument panel now also comes as standard.

The additional safety and comfort functions of BMW’s latest generation of DSC Dynamic Stability Control are likewise standard in all BMW 5 Series as of autumn 2005.

New colours, new look, new  features.

The Monaco Blue, Deep Green and Barbera Red metallic paintwork colours replace Orient Blue, Oxford Green and Chiaretta Red on the BMW 5 Series. The six-cylinder models, in turn, now come with chrome-plated rods in their kidney grille, and the regular seats boast BMW’s new Linea cloth design.

New wheels in parallel styling are available both on the 18-inch mixed-sized tyres of the 5 Series Saloon and on the standard 18-inch tyres of the 5 Series Touring.

ISOFIX child seat fastening including the option to deactivate the front passenger airbag is now also available on the front passenger’s seat.

The 5 Series comes as an option with Comfort Access which, in conjunction with the engine start/stop button, enables the driver to lock and unlock the car and start the engine without even taking the key out of his pocket. The optional High-Beam Assist, in turn, enhances active safety to an even higher standard than before.

Starting in autumn, the BMW 5 Series will furthermore be available with BMW’s M sports suspension as part of the M Sports Package.

BMW 6 Series

Coupé and Convertible with a new Eight-Cylinder Power Unit

BMW’s new 4.8-litre eight-cylinder developing maximum output of 270 kW/367 hp has already made a great name for itself in the BMW 750i. Now this power unit developing maximum torque of 490 Nm or 361 lb-ft also comes in the BMW 6 Series Coupé and Convertible, the two new BMW 650i models replacing the BMW 645Ci.

Even better performance on even less fuel.

25 kW/34 hp more power and an increase in torque by 40 Nm/30 lb-ft give BMW’s two large sports cars even more dynamic performance and supremacy on the road: The new BMW 650i Coupé accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, while its open-air counterpart completes the same exercise in 5.7 seconds.

Passing another vehicle in fourth gear of the six-speed manual gearbox featured as standard (six-speed automatic transmission is available as an option) takes the 650i Coupé just 4.7 seconds, with the 650i Convertible requiring only 0.2 seconds more. Top speed of both models is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Despite its remarkable performance, the new eight-cylinder coupé consumes just 11.9 litres of premium plus fuel on 100 kilometres, equivalent to 23.7 mpg Imp. The corresponding figure on the 650i Convertible is 12.9 litres/100 km or 21.9 mpg Imp.

From outside both of the new models remain very discreet in showing how new they really are: Only two new exterior colours – Monaco Blue and Barbera Red – as well as new 19-inch wheel design with different-sized tyres (245/40 R 19 at the front, 275/35 R 19 at the rear) show the connoisseur that these are indeed BMW’s new 650i models. A further sign of distinction underlining the two cars’ powerful look is the wider track at the rear up by 8 millimetres or 0.3´´.

Moving on to the elegant but sporting interior, the colour world now in black replacing the former grey colour scheme, the new design of the iDrive Controller as well as start/stop button on the instrument panel are the most striking points. Comfort Access comes as an option.

It almost goes without saying tat the two new BMW 650i models features BMW’s latest generation of DSC Dynamic Stability Control offering the driver a whole range of new safety functions such as Hill Start Assist, Brake Standby in dangerous situations, Dry Braking in the wet, Fading Compensation and Soft-Stop.

BMW 7 Series

New 730Ld and Significantly More Power and Torque for the Top-of-the-
Range Diesel, the BMW 745d

It is the high art of car production to overcome apparent contradictions and solve conflicts of interest – for example by offering more power on less fuel. And so the five new engines introduced recently in the upgraded and revised BMW 7 Series prove impressively that this is by all means quite possible in the spirit of BMW Efficient Dynamics.

While the combination of even greater contrasts such as sporting performance and luxurious comfort would appear to be quite impossible at least at first sight, the BMW 7 Series is able to overcome even this classic contradiction in terms, especially through the current model in the market since 2001 and updated just recently this spring.

BMW 7 Series: A driver’s car and a chauffeur-driven saloon all in one.

Within the body of the prestigious, luxurious, comfortable and spacious 7 Series Luxury Saloon lurks a sporting, agile, light-footed and active driver’s car.

Precisely this explains why the BMW 7 Series is a driver’s saloon and a chauffeur-driven limousine all in one. Indeed, this is also borne out by the fact that sales of the 7 Series are spread out almost equally among the short- and long-wheelbase models. And the most significant point, of course, is that the current 7 Series is the most successful 7 Series ever.

Long-wheelbase 7 Series featuring a diesel engine for the first time.

To meet growing demand for the long-wheelbase version also in Europe, BMW is adding a long-wheelbase model featuring a diesel engine to the range as of September 2005. In making this move, BMW’s focus is on the 3.0-litre straight-six power unit introduced in April 2005 in the 730d. With the launch of the BMW 730Ld, the 7 Series now comes with a total of no less than 11 variants – with a choice of six engines and two body versions. And starting in autumn, the BMW 730Ld will also be available with right-hand drive.

14 cm or 5.5´´ more legroom for the passengers at the rear.

The long-wheelbase version stands out from the regular model by its wheelbase extended by 14 cm or 5.5´´, which also means 14 cm more legroom for the passengers at the rear. This makes the long-wheelbase version of the BMW 7 Series simply ideal as a comfortable and truly spacious chauffeur-driven saloon.

Setting the benchmark in the segment: The 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine.

With its all-aluminium crankcase, third-generation common rail fuel injection with piezo technology and EU4 emission control incorporating a maintenance-free diesel particle filter, BMW’s 3.0-litre straight-six diesel offers the very latest in diesel technology.

The power unit first launched in spring 2005 in the updated BMW 730d is 25 kg or 55 lb lighter than its predecessor. Maximum output is up by 6 per cent, with 4 per cent more torque and at the same time an improvement in fuel economy by no less than 3.5 per cent.

Developing maximum output of 170 kW/ 231 hp and peak torque of 520 Nm/383 lb-ft from 2,000–2,750 rpm, the power unit accelerates the BMW 730Ld to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds (730d: 7.8 seconds). Top speed, like on the 730d, is 238 km/h or 148 mph, while fuel consumption is a very modest 8.2 ltr/100 km or 34.4 mpg Imp in the combined EU cycle, the same figure as the shorter 730d.

Generous equipment for maximum comfort at the rear.

Versus the regular-wheelbase model, the BMW 730Ld comes with the following additional features as standard:

·         Nasca leather

·         Electric seat heating front and rear

·         Electric sunblinds on the rear window and rear side windows

·         Self-levelling by means of air springs on the rear axle

·         Roof trim strips in chrome or body colour (which may also be finished as a no-cost option in body colour)

The BMW 7 Series in general and the long-wheelbase version in particular offer a wide range of special features for even greater comfort on the rear seats:

·         Separate rear seat air conditioning with its own climate compressor (long-wheelbase model only)

·         Electrically adjustable comfort seats in the rear

·         Rear seats with active ventilation

·         Cooling box

·         Rear seat display with its own Controller in the rear centre armrest.  This allows the passengers at the rear to watch television (both analogue and digital DVB-T stations) while driving, at the same time also enjoying the amenities of a DVD changer also available as an option.

·         Second telephone handset at the rear.

BMW 745d: the most powerful diesel luxury saloon.
Entering the 2006 model year, the 745d top-of-the range diesel now boasts even more power and torque. With maximum output of 242 kW/330 hp at 3,800 rpm and peak torque of 750 Nm/553 lb-ft extending all the way from 1900 to 2,500 rpm, the V8 power unit in the BMW 745d is the most powerful diesel engine in a luxury saloon.

This supreme diesel accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds (0.2 seconds faster than before), the electronic speed limiter only cutting in when the car, with its incomparable surge of power, reaches a speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph.

Despite this increase in output and torque, fuel consumption remains astoundingly low at just 9.5 litres/100 km, equal to 29.7 mpg Imp. And featuring ultra-modern piezo fuel injection technology as well as a particle filter fitted as standard, the 745d naturally complies in full with the EU4 emission standard.

BMW Individual for even greater comfort on the rear seats.

BMW Individual enables the passengers at the rear to increase their standard of motoring comfort to an even higher level than before: Apart from exclusive upholstery, the purchaser has the choice of interesting features in the areas of both entertainment and information electronics. One example is BMW’s Rear Seat Infotainment Online or RSI Online for short offering the rear-seat passengers the DVD, TV, navigation and on-board computer multimedia functions with free access to the internet.

The system comes complete with two 9.5-inch 16:9 aspect ratio LCD monitors integrated in the headrests presenting different images independently of each other in two different sizes. As an example, one passenger is able to surf the net via his monitor by means of the cable-free keyboard while the second passenger at the rear is watching a film or checking information from the navigation system on the second monitor. This multimedia system is also available with 6.5-inch LCD monitors without access to the internet.

New on all BMW 7 Series: Preparation for Bluetooth mobile phone technology with a firmly installed SIM card.

Apart from a Bluetooth interface for Bluetooth-compatible mobile telephones, the new preparation kit for mobile phones comes with a firmly installed Telematics Control Unit (TCU) complete with its own, firmly installed telephone card. This enables the customer to use the BMW Assist telematics service as well as BMW’s mobile Online internet portal independently of his own mobile phone – even when the mobile phone is not in the car, is not switched on, or if the customer is currently making a phone call.

The rate payable for this additional service is included in the general fee for BMW Assist and BMW Online.

Rain sensor and automatic headlight control now standard.

The rain sensor and automatic headlight control are now standard in Germany also on the 730d/Ld, 730i/Li, and 740i/Li, thus offering the customer an even higher level of practical value at no extra cost.

Two new driver assistance systems for the BMW 7 Series: BMW Night Vision and High-Beam Assist.

Introducing High-Beam Assist and BMW Night Vision respectively in September and presumably fourth quarter 2005, BMW is making life even easier for the driver of the 7 Series now able to look ahead with even greater safety in the night and at dusk.

BMW X3

New Entry-Level Model, more Diesel Power and the M Sports Package

The BMW X3 is entering the 2006 model year in September 2005 with a new entry-level petrol engine, an attractive new M Sports Package, more power in the 3.0-litre diesel engine, and with a particle filter featured as standard on all diesel models. This makes the range of features offered on this highly successful Sports Activity even larger than before, the X3 appealing to an even broader group of customers wishing to enjoy the particular thrill of SAV motoring.

Ultra-modern four-cylinder petrol engine.

Introducing the new X3 2.0i, BMW is for the first time offering a four-cylinder petrol engine in one of its offroad vehicles, thus providing yet a further attractive entry level into the BMW X family over and above the X3 2.0d.

The upgraded 2.0-litre four-cylinder featuring VALVETRONIC and double-VANOS also to be admired in the 1 and 3 Series develops maximum output of 110 kW/150 bhp and peak torque of 200 Nm/147 lb-ft at just 3,750 rpm.

BMW xDrive for supreme agility and traction.

The electronically controlled multiple-plate coupling featured in BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system spreads out driver power within fractions of a second to the two axles in the interest not only of excellent traction, but also of a fast response and unparalleled all-wheel-drive agility never seen before.

With this kind of superiority, the BMW X3 2.0i with its six-speed manual gearbox featured as standard accelerates to 100 km/h in just 11.5 seconds. Top speed is 198 km/h or 123 mph, and acceleration from 80–120 km/h in fourth gear takes just 10.9 seconds. At the same time the X3 2.0i easily fulfils the EU4 emission standard, consuming just 9.3 ltr/100 km in the EU cycle (equal to 30.4 mpg Imp).

Wide range of equipment and innovative safety features.

The BMW X3 2.0i comes as standard with 235/55 all-season tyres running on 17-inch light-alloy rims (German specifications). Apart from the intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system, DSC Dynamic Stability Control, DBC Dynamic Brake Control, CBC Cornering Brake Control as well as BMW’s two-stage Adaptive Brake Display ensure an even higher standard of active safety on the road.

Like all of BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicles, the X3 2.0i also offers BMW’s unique Trailer Stability Management automatically detecting any dangerous pendulum motion of the trailer and intervening accordingly. Superior safety and comfort on rough terrain, in turn, is ensured by Hill Descent Control (HDC) likewise featured as standard and automatically controlling both speed and intervention of the brakes on a steep descent.

BMW X3 3.0d: More power, more performance, more gears.

The BMW X3 3.0d is becoming even more powerful and at the same time even more environmentally friendly as of September: Maximum output of the 3.0-litre straight-six common rail diesel is up by 10 kW/14 bhp to 160 kW/218 bhp, peak torque increasing by an even more significant 90 Nm to 500 Nm/369 lb-ft available all the way from 1,750–2,750 rpm.

This supreme power now goes to the wheels in all cases through six finely laid out gears, either – as in the past – through the six-speed manual gearbox featured as standard or- starting in autumn – through the optional six-speed automatic transmission.

Road performance of the X3 3.0d proves that this increase in power and torque, together with the new automatic transmission, truly stands out not only on paper: Acceleration from 0–100 km/h now comes another 0.5 seconds faster than before in just 7.4 seconds (automatic transmission: 7.7 seconds). Top speed is limited to 210 km/h or 130 mph on account of the all-season tyres, while the high speed set-up offered by the optional Sports Package increases top speed on both transmission versions to 220 km/h or 136 mph (previously 218 km/h/135 mph with manual gearbox and 215 km/h/133 mph with automatic transmission).

More on less: Lower fuel consumption and lower emissions.

Despite its significant increase in power and performance, this outstanding Sports Activity now consumes 0.5 litres less on 100 kilometres, fuel consumption in the EU driving cycle down to 7.9 litres of diesel fuel (equal to 35.8 mpg Imp). Fuel consumption of the automatic transmission model, by comparison, is an equally economical 8.6 litres or 32.8 mpg Imp.

Apart from this improvement in fuel economy, the environment also benefits from lower emissions: Starting in September, the X3 3.0d and X3 2.0d diesel models come as standard with a diesel particle filter and naturally comply in full with the EU4 emission norm.

M Sports Package on the BMW X3: Dynamic performance clearly visible at very first sight.

BMW M, BMW’s Specialist Company for Specialist Cars, has developed a new and attractive M Sports Package for the X3, enabling purchasers of this compact Sports Activity to order their car straight from the factory with even more individual and sporting flair.

Specially tuned to the X3, the M Sports Package offers enhanced driving pleasure, greater agility and dynamic performance particularly for the genuine connoisseur and ambitious driver. Clearly, the M Sports Package boasts a sporting chassis and suspension set-up beneath the body of the car. In conjunction with 18-inch M light-alloy wheels running on 235/50 R18 at the front and 255/45 R18 at the rear for optimum grip, this enables the sports-minded driver to enjoy the full lateral dynamic potential of the truly unique BMW X3.

From the outside, the M Sports Package can be distinguished by numerous aerodynamically optimised add-on components. The modified front and rear air dams, for example, are finished in body colour, just like the newly designed wheel trim covers and side-sills. The powerful rear end of the car is formed by a newly designed two-piece air dam comprising a painted bumper and a black diffuser cover with tailpipes in new design. Numerous features are finished in BMW Individual high-gloss Satin Chrome, harmoniously rounding off the sporting look of the car together with the white direction indicators.

The interior harmonises perfectly with the sporting exterior through its sports seats, the M leather steering wheel, as well as the shift lever knob finished in Anthracite-coloured leather.

Innovations, new Equipment and Diesel Particle Filter

Two new driver assistance systems are available as an option from BMW. These innovative technologies make life even easier for the BMW driver, enabling him to look ahead quite literally even further when driving in the dark.

More active safety thanks to High-Beam Assist.

High-Beam Assist available on the 5, 6 and 7 Series incorporates a camera sensor in the interior mirror monitoring traffic conditions and independently activating/deactivating the high beam. In the process, the system detects the headlights and rear lights of other vehicles as well as ambient light conditions on the road.

Whenever there are no vehicles ahead or approaching the driver, the high beam is switched on automatically if the road is not sufficiently illuminated, thus significantly increasing the mileage covered with high-beam illumination. Studies have indeed shown that motorists use the high beam very rarely, although such brighter illumination would not only be possible but also advantageous in many situations.

High-Beam Assist helps to significantly increase the use of the high-beam headlights, enhancing active safety on the road simply because the driver is able to see both persons and obstacles much more easily than before.

BMW Night Vision.

For the time being BMW Night Vision is planned to be available only on the 7 Series as of fourth quarter 2005. This innovative option comprises a thermal imaging camera covering a distance of up to 300 metres or almost 1,000 feet in front of the car. The image presented as a result on the central monitor highlights objects with increasing brightness as a function of the temperature (heat) registered by the camera, thus making human beings (pedestrians next to the road) and animals (wild animals crossing the road) the brightest points
in the image.

BMW Night Vision offers the customer particular benefits on country roads, in narrow lanes and in a dark garage, significantly increasing the level of safety when driving at night.

DSC with new, innovative safety and comfort functions.

DSC Dynamic Stability Control offers a number of additional safety and comfort functions standard on all models in the 5 and 6 Series as of autumn 2006 and also included in the standard equipment of the six-cylinder 1 and 3 Series.

Hill Start Assist enables the driver particularly in cars with a manual gearbox to set off conveniently on uphill gradients without having to use the handbrake.

The Brake Standby function pre-aligns the brake pads close to the brake discs whenever the driver takes his foot rapidly off the brake pedal, thus reducing the time lag and, accordingly, the stopping distance until brake pressure is built up in a subsequent emergency braking manoeuvre.

The Dry Braking function operates the brakes in defined intervals in the rain, unnoticeably to the driver and without slowing down the car, thus removing splashwater from the brakes and guaranteeing a spontaneous brake effect on wet roads.

Fading Compensation serves to additionally boost brake pressure when the brakes are extremely hot, achieving a lasting high level of brake power also in such an extreme situation.

The Soft-Stop function reduces any uncomfortable feeling of the brakes – that is the typical brake “jolt – when the driver applies the brakes hard all the way to a standstill by automatically reducing brake pressure immediately before the car comes to a stop.

Trailer Stability Management, finally, serves to stabilise a car and trailer threatening to become unstable and start swaying in a kind of pendulum motion.

New map presentation on the navigation system.

Starting in autumn 2005, the 3 Series Coupé, 3 Series Convertible, the 7 Series, the Z4, X3 and X5 with BMW’s Professional navigation system are receiving an even more modern, high-resolution and thus easy-to-read graphic display on their navigation map. Through this optimised graphic presentation with smoothened edges, the driver or any other user will no longer see the usual pixels in the picture, letters therefore coming out even clearer and more legibly. A further improvement involves the symbols on the map presentation now also clearer than before.

The BMW 7 Series comes additionally with 3D presentation incorporating a bird’s view perspective, a clear focus on surrounding features in the area, combined with a wide perspective vision supporting the subjective feeling of space.

This improved presentation can be downloaded into systems on all of the models mentioned as well as the former 3 and 5 Series built as of September 2005 by the dealer within a matter of minutes simply by updating the car’s software. The only requirement is that the vehicles involved are equipped with BMW’s Professional navigation system.

BMW diesel particle filter for all new and many pre-owned BMWs.

BMW has already made significant progress in fitting all diesel models as quickly as possible with particle filters. As of autumn 2005, not only the various models in the BMW 5 and 7 Series already fitted for quite some time as standard with maintenance-free particle filters, but also the diesel models in the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and Touring, the X3 and the X5 will come as standard with a particle filter. And the diesel models in the BMW 1 Series are already available as an option with such a filter. This makes BMW one of the first manufacturers to offer a complete range of diesel particle filters on all diesel models.

Good news also in terms of retrofittable solutions: Starting in autumn 2005, retrofit kits will be available on many current and former model series originally delivered to the customer without a filter, including most of the models in the former 3 Series.
