BMW has released a new promotional video for their tri-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine.

While we've already heard plenty about the engine, the clip gives a nice overview of how the turbochargers work. As the video explains, "at low revs, the first small turbocharger ensures fast acceleration" which is optimized by variable turbine geometry. At medium revs, the second turbocharger is activated to maximize torque output. Lastly at high revs, the third turbo comes online to help the engine produce its peak output of 381 PS (280 kW / 375 bhp) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque."

Thanks to all turbochargers, the M550d xDrive sedan accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, averages 6.3 L/100km (44.8 mpg UK / 37.3 mpg US) and has CO2 emissions of 165 g/km.

As we have previously reported, the engine will be standard equipment on the company's M Performance Automobiles lineup which includes the M550d xDrive Sedan / Touring, X5 M50d and X6 M50d. The M550d will be launched in Germany on May 12, while the X5/X6 M50d will start arriving at dealerships on June 16.

Impressive, but doesn't additional amount of turbochargers create more potential mechanical problems?

All wonderfully complex and I hope it doesn't being about any unwanted mechanical issues like DBaskov says, but aside from all that.....the noise this thing produces is just plain EPIC!!!!!!!!

BMW is very well known for their marvelous cutting edge technology engines. I have also heard they are working on electric turbochargers and their are coming out with world leading carbon fiber mass production.

That´s called CHAPUZA, 1 Turbo = 1 problem, 3 turbos = Nightmare. Bad news. That sounds to me as a workaround because they can´t finish the develop of the new turbo technology that made what those 3 turbos do. A few month ago they patent a new turbo that are more "elastic" in different revs. Come on BMW go back to the design board and improve those thing. 3 Turbos? what a Joke...
