Chevrolet Malibu is North American Car of the Year
January 29, 2008
If you've actually SEEN the new Malibu, you'd begin to understand why it was awarded the "Car of the year" title. It's an excellent example of what can be achieved when American Auto manufacturers put their heart into it. The sheetmetal tolerances, and all-round fit and finish on this vehicle are head and shoulders above anything I've seen come out of Detroit ever! Others have asked, "How could this beat the Cadillac?" While the Caddy is a fine car in its own right, the Malibu is in reach, financially, of a greater number of people, and, in my opinion, is therefore more worthy of the title.

A Korean Manufactured Chevy. Not a BAD little car for the money. I think the "new" front end styling does make it look more agressive, which is not a bad thing either. I find it a bit amusing that a number of people knock the fact that GM has set up a new plant in Bupyong Korea, and improved the admittedly terrible quality of the Daewoo line, and they say things like. "Koreans have never made a decent car"...then, these same people will turn around and extoll the virtues of the Hyundai, either forgetting, or never knowing, that they are made in Korea as well. I guess for some people, as long as it's made by GM it's "Garbage" and if it has a Japanese badge, it's "Fantastic!" The truth is, every Manufacturer has their successes, and their failures. I remember well the Toyota Corollas of the 60's and early 70's and while the 1600 CC engines generally went about 50,000 miles before needing rings and valves, there was little use in doing the job, because often the bodies were literally falling off them by that time. The moral of this story is,...Don't be too quick to judge ANY manufacturer based on past performance, and keep an open mind when looking at the new crop of vehicles available for your money,...you MIGHT be surprised!
Worst Cars Of 2007

North American Manufacturers created their problem with perception way back in the 60's when then unknown little cars began arriving from Japan, called Toyota and Datsun with Mazda not far behind. At first, the North American Makers, and the public at large, treated these vehicles with utter contempt. Then, when the makers saw that toyotas and Datuns were capturing the publics interest, and their money, they came out with a couple of half hearted attempts at getting into the small car market. Everyone who remembers the Chevrolet Vega, and the Ford Pinto, does so with a shake of their heads today. Putting it bluntly, they were so bad they were embarassing! Those early Japanese imports were cheap, reliable and economical,..they were also pretty basic transportation. The end result was predictible, Japanese cars gained a large segment of the market, and the North American makers have been playing catchup ever since. Many of the products coming out of Detroit and Dearborn today are superiour to anything in the past, but it will take many years to turn public opinion around.
