But if you think about it, a lot of car manufacturers do the very same thing. Take the 3 series coupe. There's the 328, the 335, the 335s, and then a diesel version. They can all be had with 4-wheel drive. They can all be had as convertibles. There are high-performance variants, the M3 and the M3 GTS (the analogue of the GT2/GT3). The only difference is that where most companies add thigs such as the drop top or the all-wheel drive or a higher performance version as options, Porsche simply sticks in the options and then changes the model name. In a way, it probably makes it easier for customers to find the perfect combination that they're after.
