Maybach Brand to be Shut Down - report Hilarious that anyone here would call the Maybach discrete. The entire marketing strategy was based around it being the ultimate motoring status symbol ...and clearly aimed at those wanting to make a bold statement. Unfortunately, the Rolls-Royce guys did the whole thing 10 time better. It was an almost impossible task to revive a brand that was only ever bought buy a few top-ranking Nazis in the 1930s. Although the vehicle was undoubtedly built to the highest standards, I have always considered it to be a rather contrived and smug attempt to take some of the prestige away from BMW and VW after their purchase of Rolls-Royce and Bentley respectively. Most unfortunate of all was that the Maybach was obviously the product of corporate meetings and so had all the style and taste of a business-class hotel suite -- very bland and characterless -- and that was what DaimlerChysler got wrong -- they forgot to ask why customers would buy a Rolls-Royce over an S class when an S class is still technically as good as any luxury car can be. So why the hell would anyone pay three times the cost of an S class for a couple of reclining seats at the rear? The Global economic crisis only made it seem more irrelevant. It will likely be seen as a footnote in Daimler's history that coincided with the absolute shambles of the Schrempp years.

"Restrained" is what the A8 is all about. This is a car for those who appreciate subtlety and conservative good taste -- for it to be any other way would go against the culture of the brand. Mercedes and BMW have abandoned their "Germaness" for a more Global design culture -- Audi remains true to its Teutonic origins.

Bentley Mulsanne Unveiled at Pebble Beach Hmm, I am not sure about this. The Arnage's curves had more natural fluidity. There is something slightly awkward and contrived about some of the details on this new model. I see all the Bentley styling cues, yet I don't feel like I'm looking at a Bentley. Maybe I will warm to it in time.
