VW outlines the MQB platform & new engine families I would love not to think like that, but usually something that is said to work for multiple and very different purposes, does not work great for any of them but just enough for all. It has to work like a kind of puzzle in order to adapt to each size, so either every junction should make it lose stiffness or every extra part that remains in the platform and is not used for that model/engine means extra weight. Doesn't it sound logical to you as well? I hope I am wrong.
