Toyota Previews 2010 RAV4 Facelift and Auris HSD Production Version for Geneva Debut
February 17, 2010
Have I missed something here... I like the fact that Toyota is hybridising their line, I think the more they do this the better they will be able to adapt to changes in the future.
But, this is the Auris. This Corolla hatch has never seen US shores so it really begs the question who is going to buy it in Europe.
To clarify; Auris has been available (as did the Corolla before it) with a 1.4 D4D engine with 90hp and 140lb ft of torque from a whisker or two above idle - i.e. more than adequate.
This engine is all aluminium so weighs peanuts. Also it is bloody cheep since it has been around over 10 years. It does 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres (56 mpg-imp; 47 mpg-US) at least in the Auris chassis.
So does it make any sense to add the heavier 1.8 litre engine from the prius along with 100kg of NiMH, never mind the weight of an electric motor and HSD planetary gearset to juggle the drive to the Auris?
Sure it would be quiet, but somehow I don't think people are going to pay for it here where they would for the larger Prius.

Toyota confirms Prius had brake design problems

come on... my car didn't brake for 0.1 of a second while it switched from hydraulic to electric, oh no I'm going to die... please. This is probably very rare otherwise they will have caught it and since they didn't probably would have gone unnoticed had it not been for such a litigious population.

I'm sorry... Come again, by using selective charging of the battery they've made this car do over 1000 miles on a tank. This is mocking the industry or at least the US vehicle market that can't get near these figures even with hybrid tech. Oh, and lets face it you'll be at 65mph or 100km/h for all of those 1750km for fear of a cop snatching your license, so top speed is pretty irrelevant.

Well at least you didn't have to see that hideous gawping front end. Is it just me or is this car irrelevant to all markets except the US? Yes Sirocco TDi or any French supermini or C-sector car will be much more efficient and a damn site less frightful to look at.
