Jaguar planning crossover SUV
December 11, 2010
I think YOU are the one who needs to think about it more. Crossovers are profitable and will sell strongly. A $100,000 supercar will not. Given that they're already bringing a roadster, an XF coupe, and are planning an R8 fighter, if they also bring a crossover, what's the problem? A crossover is a more desirable luxury car for most people anyway. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Jaguar should be a sports car company. You purists make me laugh. Take a business class or two.

But the problem is, for me, that there are so many cars out there that perform better for cheaper while being damn near as luxurious. The GTI is overpriced too, in my book, and it trails its competition in power and features. AWD is nice, but a WRX is cheaper and offers a better AWD system and just as much power.

VWvortex says it'll cost $33-34k. Are you kidding me? With 260hp? The WRX is far cheaper, the STi is far faster, the EVO is more accomplished, and the 135i is RWD. They're completely insane. This should be the drivetrain in the GTI, with AWD as a GTI option. If it had 300+HP, maybe I could see it, but 260hp and Haldex AWD for $33k is lame as hell. It'll sell only to fanboys.

Agreed, though I'd have phrased it "staggeringly dull" or "so anonymous it makes a Camry look exciting." Subtle, my ass. It's boring. You know why? Because this is the car bought by German pensioners who'd be buying Buicks and Toyota Avalons if they were in the US.
VW of America considering two new models - Phaeton returns

They need the Lupo like they need a hole in the head, and the same goes for a Phaeton. Forget the Lupo and Up. They need a strong midsize sedan that competes squarely with the Fusion and Accord, a competitor to the Fit, a crossover the size, spec, and price of the Rav4, and a larger midsize crossover. The Tiguan is a joke in the US market ; it's not a credible crossover here, where we have superior offerings. If VW wants to become relevant in the US, it needs to sell cars that are relevant in this market, not fobbed-off and desperately decontented Euro cars.

Ironically, most American brands rank higher in quality than VW. Volkswagens crap coil packs and window regulators; Buicks are beyond reproach, and Fords are as reliable as Toyotas. German cars had something to brag about 30 years ago. The goalposts have moved. You Euro-chauvinists are still lost in the dream that you know best, but the rest of the world produces better cars, cheaper, with better warranties and vastly better dealers. Your complacency is leading you down the same road GM and Ford went down in the 80s - arrogant complacency. Watch out.

So it's boring as hell, but not quite as boring as the most boring car in its class. What a stunning defense.

The Golf and the Astra are both boring. What's so hard about that? They're the Camry and Accord of Europe.

Why is it so hard to understand? Are people really so dense as to not understand why somebody like me, who lives in a smallish town near the mountains, might want a car that's compact and efficient but which can carry skis, camping gear, kayaks, and the like? This is MORE useful than a hatch OR a big fuel-sucking SUV.
MINI Crossman Crossover Hits N?rburgring

I like it, actually. Quite a bit. I love small cars and would prefer to drive something B- or C-segment. I hike, bike, kayak, ski, and camp, and need something with the cargo room to carry stuff and the ground clearance to take a poorly maintained road. The current crop of compact SUVs are too large for my tastes, and drive too poorly. I want something that's not a chore to drive on a nice twisty road. Oh, and I demand 30-34mpg highway. So I'm a perfect example of somebody who'd buy a compact crossover that's been 'Ring tuned, gets great gas mileage, can be driven on a choppy road, and isn't the size of a barge. And I personally know 10 people who'd seriously consider this. Oh, and nobody thinks you're cool for dumping on SUVs. Outside the echo chamber of car forums, crossovers and SUVs are useful cars that fit people's needs better than whatever glorified econobox you drive. People have different needs and wants than you, and your inability to understand that is friggin' juvenile.
