Chevrolet Volt Li-ion battery packs to be manufactured by LG Chem
July 15, 2009
ok, after reading all the threads, just want to make a few statements, please correct me if i've made an error in any of my calculations, 16kwh battery, current ontario priceing, $0.057/kwh, that would mean a full charge from 0 to full, shuld only be $0.912, however, GM is claiming to only use the battery from 80% of full charge to 30% of full charge to extend the life of the battery over 10 years, this means only 8kwh is actually being used in full electric mode, giving an actual cost for the first 64km, or 40 miles of only $0.456, after this the generator kicks in, and supplies the batteries with the needed energy by burning gas, or ethonal enriched fuels up to 85%, greatly reducing the need for actual fossil fuels, now my reaserch on this car has yeilded differnt numbers for fuel economy on the generator, trips of 60 miles or less, recieve a 150mpg rating, while 80 mile trips get a 100mpg rating, and further extended trips as low as 50mpg, so granted, yes, you can buy a mid 80's compact car that will recieve upwards of 45mpg for a far cheaper price, but you cant get a 2010 vehicle with the same fuel economy, and safty regulations, i for one think this car is a stepping stone towards the future of transportation, especially for those people fortunate enough to have a round trip to and from work less than 200km, it only makes sence to plug the car in at work and let it charge, giving you a free 64km, 64km at 46 cents, and only 70km at the current fuel price, as for impact on the environment, in Ontario, 4000Mwh are wasted each day in over production, as the current Nuclear, and hydro dams produce over 19000Mwh, and only 14000 - 15000Mwh are actually consumed, so no additional environmental impact for charging the vehicle, in fact, a much smaller environmental foot print while driving, the only wish i have, is for the car to offerd at a more resonable price of less than $30000.00, this way a much wider consumer base could more easily benifit from a sooner cost saving. now before i get called a green peacer, I work in Alberta, and make my living on Oil and Natuaral gas, and drive a Chev 3500 diesle every day, but i fly home to Ontario where i live for my days off, and have been researching this car a replacement for my current vehicle as a potential cost savings while i am home,
