Reason is that USA has totally mad laws for normal diesels. Still they allow extremely polluting diesels in fullsize trucks. Limits for passenger car diesels are ridiculous, nobody cant offer proper modern and clean diesel there.
Mitsubishi Withdraws from Dakar Rally

As the article states, they didnt withdraw because of lack of success this year. They wont every dakar after 2000 in row till this last dakar, which they lost. Problem was financial crisis.
