Audi's 3.0 has only been released this year and currently only on one model (though its expected to be rolled out to others in due course). Compare this to BMW who have been using twin turbo diesel engines for sometime now.

I'd suggest that those wheels are due to the weather conditions (snow/ice) rather than the finished intention. I'd expect to see something which fills the wheel arch more.
