However, the fact is that if this is achieved by aftermarket tuners, then I guess there would be doubts about whether it could even clock up the mileage you suggested. The fact that it is done by a mass car manufacturer such as Ford means that it is unlikely to go wrong. They probably don't have the balls to push boundaries and risk getting unreliability for the sake of their brand image ! Let's hope the trend of these downsizing continues, at least on these everyday cars. The specs are just getting better and better !

Toyota developing a new turbocharged engine - report If I remember correctly I think the diesel-hybrid idea is a good one, but problems are firstly, mating a heavy electric drive system to an already heavy diesel engine (of comparable displacement to petrol engine) could make the car overweight, and, secondly, there are a bit of trouble to couple the relatively high motor revolutions to the relatively slow diesel engine revolutions. Do correct me if i remember incorrectly though !
