I believe the price of a brand-new-with-warranty, boring, modest car for daily use ends up costing the same as a heavily depreciated, gorgeous classic with a full service history.
Unfortunately, my beloved W123 Estate Car, affectionately known as "Ivana Trunk," had to be "put down" after an incident with an at-fault Honda CR-V driver. I bought her from a specialist with 165K miles and let her go at 326K miles... so sad. It would have been great to convert to biodiesel and ride out the 21st century, but now I hope you'll consider doing so!
...and keep that 1972 Lotus Europa Twin Cam going, too!

Hey, alright. I'm a fan of classics myself. I actually have a W123 300TD and a '72 Lotus Europa that unfortunately is in a constant state of restoration. I was seriously considering scrapping my Lotus project for a more sensible SL250 from '66-'68. Don't be so harsh on the new Benz's though. I agree the old quality isn't there and there's too many "driver assist" systems getting in the way but, the way I always saw it, you have to have a new car for a daily driver and what are you going to get, a Lexus, BMW, Audi? Ha.

Mercedes Concept Style Coupe unveiled in L.A., production version confirmed for 2013 [video]
April 21, 2012
This Concept is a very strong aesthetic statement. It looks forward by presenting future technologies in an aggressive, sporting, and elegant evolution of the current CLS's form, but also nods to the past by echoing the 300SL's bonnet bulges and by amplifying the graceful slope of many previous coupes' C-pillars. However, Mercedes-Benz established a signature, and a high engineering standard, by producing coupes without B-pillars for decades. What's wrong with the terms sedan, saloon, and limousine, especially if they are worthy of the three-pointed star? Believing in standards is not backwards. Historically and intuitively, this is a marvelous sports sedan, but not a genuine Mercedes-Benz coupe.
Mercedes to revamp nomenclature, confuse everyone - report
April 20, 2012
Sounds like Marketing cannot keep up with Engineering. The number of new vehicle types and engines makes it hard to adhere to a twentieth century nomenclature that is now inherently flawed for today's model range. As a longtime Mercedes-Benz fan and advocate, it perplexes and vexes me to see the iconic SL with a 4.7-litre engine marketed as both the SL500 and SL550, depending on the market, and makes me call into question the integrity of the whole system. Moreover, it is my understanding that the letters ?ML? don't even mean anything! If the letters ?CLS? stand (unofficially, of course) for ?Coupe-Like Styling,? then perhaps ?ML? stands for ?Marketing's License? or ?Macho Limousine.? It seems like certain standards no longer matter, and I think that's a damn shame! Oh well, thank goodness for Mercedes-Benz Classic.
Don't misunderstand me, please. Mercedes-Benz is still my favorite marque. Yet, here's some tough love: ?What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.?

Mercedes-Benz asks us to challenge our perceptions (http://www.worldcarfans.com/112041743478/mercedes-teases-clc-interior-in-design-video) and to trust our instincts. Well, instinct tells me this is not a proper Mercedes-Benz coupe. I trust my eyes. I know the history of the brand. The three-pointed star would shine more brightly without the hidden B-pillar!
We are also asked to forget about brands and reputations. Okay, then take another look at Volvo's Concept S60 (http://www.worldcarfans.com/108121615615/volvo-s60-concept-revealed-ahead-of-detroit). Its design was led by Steve Mattin who spent 17 years at Mercedes-Benz. Notice how the Volvo Concept S60 has four doors and absolutely no B-pillar.
I like everything else about the Concept Style Coupe, especially the resolution of the bonnet shutlines, a la mode de AMG's SLS.
Eric Clapton's Ferrari SP12 EPC caught on video
March 26, 2012
I would like to surmise that Mr. Clapton shares some of the same dissatisfaction I feel about newer Ferrari designs. Unlike I, he is able to commission a bespoke solution to satisfy his new Ferrari desires. If I could be so bold as to suggest an alteration to the design of SP12 EPC, then I think it would be great to see a different set of tail lamps. Playing off the triplet tailpipes, I imagine that a return of the Ferrari 365 GT4 BB's two trios of tail lamps would be in keeping with the spirit of the design.

Land Rover Evoque Cabriolet Concept spotted on London streets
February 26, 2012
The Evoque Coupe's design is as definitive as the 1954-'57 Mercedes-Benz 300SL, the 1976-'89 BMW 6-Series, and the 1970-'95 Range Rover. IMHO, the cabriolet Evoque appears premature, unfinished, on a lower rung--and slipping towards generic status. Even Classic Range Rovers seem to lose distinction when someone chops their tops. Moreover, I believe the iconic Evoque Coupe already addressed the issue of rear passenger claustrophobia with its panoramic glass roof!
Currently, I'm dreaming of an Evoque Coupe with at least two more cylinders, painted in Ecurie Ecosse blue metallic, with a silver panoramic roof, and the Euro-spec ?Couture? interior color scheme option.

A hallmark of quality on the Concept Ocean Drive is the uninterrupted transition from the bonnet into the grille surround, a signature Mercedes-Benz design first seen on the 1990-2002 R129 SL-Class. So many current M-B cars still emulate the R129's grille, but their bonnet shutlines betray the integrity of the original design, probably for cost-cutting reasons. The Concept Ocean Drive's grille looks strong and proud and it would be a great shame if future Mercedes-Benz cars failed to match this concept's optimistic presence.

Don't forget that the W140 chassis coupe was known in 1997 as the S-Class and in 1998 as the CL-Class. For example, the only difference between the 1997 S600 Coupe and the 1998 CL600 was the model designation on the trunklid. Long live the Concept Ocean Drive!!!
