When last were you this excited about a Chevrolet family sedan, apart from the semi-manic Lumina? Now after months of teasing we can finally reveal what the Chevrolet Cruze is all about as it debuts at the Paris Motor Show. Cruze is Chevy’s new mid-sized family sedan and its main point of existence is to elbow out the Toyota Corollas and Volkswagen Jettas of the world. A tough mission for anyone, ask anyone who has tried, but Chevrolet is super-confident in its offering. And for the first time they may actually have something to back this bravado in the Cruze.

The Cruze uses a design language that is becoming quite common lately, the one of a four-door fastback coupe sedan, similar to what we see in Mercedes-Benz CLS and Jaguar XF as quick examples. The Chevy “V” theme is carried from the grille in the exterior, right into the interior where it dominates the dashboard, but not to an irritating extent. Complementing it is the ambient ice blue LED background lighting system that gives it a warm, glowing feeling.

Three engines will be available, a 2.0-liter turbo diesel, a 1.6 and 1.8-liter gas choices. Respectively they produce 110kW and 320Nm, 82kW and 103kW. Chevrolet promises a more entry-level 92kW, 300Nm version of the turbo diesel. In addition to a 5-cog manual changer you get a 6-speed automatic, which is really welcome for this segment of the market.

ICE is taken care of courtesy of four and six-speaker sound system featuring MP3 playability, iPod input jack with a large hard drive for music storage. Completing the package is the DVD satellite navigation system with 7-inch map display and voice recognition function.

Sales begin in March 2009 and indications are that most targeted global markets will have the Cruze by the end of 2009.

+1 for a cool interior, exterior however... meh seems like an average family sedan, that is not really a bad thing though.

i agree the interior is nice although i think it will be made with cheap materials, but the exterior is really unattractive. the concept art is cool but the ykept the lights then put a normal body around it and it just doesnt work.

The interior does look alright. I can't help but feel it is heavily "inspired" by Acura/Honda. (The curve of the dash, the color contrast..the silver double spokes at the bottom of the steering wheel..)

The steering wheel looks exactly like the Civic's. For years I was convinced GM had a Department of Ugly Steering Wheels, so at least they've learned to copy a nice design here and there. I wonder if it's as uncomfortable to hold as the one in the Malibu, which looks lovely but has a sharp ridge around the rim right where the heel of your hand goes.

Now this is nice, much better looking than the cobalt, which it will be replacing. I can totally see this on the road.

The best idea chevy could have is to copy honda/acura. the last 2 small chevy cars, the cobalt and cavalier, were horrible. they rattled, they were ugly, not to mention that fit and finish were crap. now that chevy can't ride the large suv and pickup to the bank its about time they crank out some cars that people may actually want to purchase.

drab and boring, and i especially hate the interior what is it with GM and putting these interiors in their cars??

by BabyMilo | October 2, 2008 6:20 AM
Are you serious? Whats wrong with the interior?

by gmfan09 | October 2, 2008 1:34 PM
BabyMilo..you don't like any cars, do you ?..

by phobos | October 2, 2008 9:05 AM
i do like alot of cars actually, i like the alfa romeo 159, 166 and brera, BMW X5, 5 series, 6 series, bmw m3 coupe, volvo v70 and xc70, mercedes g wagon, mercedes s class, volvo c30, mini clubamn, holden sportwagon, fiat 500, mini, maserati GT, acura MDX, range rover vogue and sport, mercedes e class, lexus GS, porsche 911 targa, bently flying spur, citroen c4, holden commodre (pontiac g8), VW Glf GTI, maybach 62, jaguar xj just to name a few you know

SO you like any car over the price range of 40,000...Thats great if you have the cash but my guess is you don't.

This chevy is really nice...And it will be made of some great materials. The hardest thing for chevy is not there design (the have designers that are fully capable and some of the best) but the stigma of it being a chevy. They are good cars now and frankly i think this looks better than the crazy NASA interior of a civic. They both have boring exteriors

by foose1397 | October 2, 2008 3:53 PM
no you know what foose i cant afford any of the cars in my list becuase im only 13...

by BabyMilo | October 3, 2008 12:51 AM
..the cruze is one of chevrolet's new direction in the global market, they need this kind of car, this car actually looks good if you compare it to the conservative styling of the corrola, the cruze is much sleeker..

by phobos | October 2, 2008 9:09 AM
corolla..

by phobos | October 2, 2008 9:10 AM
From the USA: Looks much better than the Corrolla, and even the Civic and our Focus. The interior as far as design is better than those three as well, and we can only hope that the quality control that went into the current Malibu will carry over to this car. Now they just need a two-door model. That would be pretty hot looking.

by mustang5507 | October 2, 2008 9:54 AM
Looks pretty good for a Euro-Chevy, but interior looks like if was pulled out from a fiesta.

by Tuner_Mad | October 2, 2008 10:11 AM
this thing is hot. for a family sedan...

Interesting to see this. Not too bad on the eyes either, even though I'm curious about that textured looking material on the dashboard. I wonder how it will compare in the dynamic, refinement and tactile feel departments? These are some of the (many) areas GM has struggled with in the past. However, it seems like GM is FINALLY starting to be serious about building decent cars. Not a moment too soon is an understatement.

The real world pictures look the best and that is good to see...
