Chrysler LLC today presented electric versions of the Chrysler Town & Country, Jeep Wrangler along with a Dodge branded sportscar based on the Lotus Europa. Chrysler intends to have 100 of these vehicles on the road next year with the Government set to be the main beneficiary before full production commences in 2010 for consumers in the North American and European markets. The technology combines an electric motor that drives the wheels along with an advanced lithium-ion battery system and a controller that manages energy flow.

“This technology provides customers with a vehicle that has zero tailpipe emissions and a 150- to 200-mile driving range – far exceeding most Americans’ daily commutes, as nearly 80 percent of Americans drive less than 40 miles per day, or 14,000 miles per year,” said Frank Klegon, Executive Vice President – Product Development, Chrysler LLC. “Electric Vehicles provide the opportunity to fulfil social responsibility, reduce dependency on foreign oil, and eliminate monthly gasoline bills, while delivering performance and utility that our customers desire.”

The most impressive drivetrain is featured in the Dodge EV, the 268 horsepower (200kW) electric motor generates a massive 600Nm (442lb-ft) of torque. It allows the model to launch from zero to 60mph in less than 5 seconds until it reaches a top speed of 120mph, its quarter mile time sits below 13 seconds. Charging can be done from a typical 220-volt or 110-volt household socket which will charge the vehicle in four hours and eight hours respectively, it ultimately gives the Dodge EV a driving range of up to 200 miles.

Moving up a level to the Jeep Wrangler, the same 268 horsepower electric motor is found with an output of 400Nm (295lb-ft) of torque. It is combined with a small gasoline engine to give the model an uninterrupted driving range of 400 miles, with 40 of these miles achieved through zero emission electric only operation.

The Chrysler EV based on the Town & Country possesses a slightly less powerful electric motor with an output of 255 horsepower (190kW) and 350Nm (258lb-ft) of torque. It can accelerate from 0-60mph in under nine seconds and boasts an driving range of 400 miles on only eight gallons of fuel – that equates to a fuel consumption figure of 50mpg.

...it is not that stupid..only few people will use the 4x4 capability to the limit..but chrysler needs new model, not converting the present model into an electric drive, the present model is bad.. chevrolet has done a good job with the volt..others should do the same, but this is still a good surprise for the green planet

its disconcerting looking at the europa becoming a dodge. i wonder how upset Tesla is with lotus.

I honestly hope that Chrysler will at least modify the Europa to look better than that. As far as the other models, they need to die out. That is blatantly lazy and completely insulting to the customer. Sticking a battery propelled motor in a car and branding it as new is just downright wrong. I hope Chrysler suffers for this.

Piss off Chrysler. Kudos, Chevy, for making a new car like the Volt.

Why wait for new models? The Wrangler and minivans are years away from a model changeover, so getting this technology to market fast makes sense, and actually adds some appeal to their lineup until they can un-do the design damage caused by Trevor Creed over the last five years. (But please make that Dodge better looking than that! Looks like a prev-gen Galant-based Avenger coupe. Ew.)

The minivan and Jeep make sense for such a retrofit because both have the room for the hardware. Sure, they're not as cool as the Volt, and I'd rather have seen an electric Charger (lol), but hey, it's a sign of life in Auburn Hills.

lotus europa anyone!!??

The Lotus Europa seems to make more sense as a Dodge somehow. I don't see how Tesla can be pissed off, I am quite sure they didn't pay Lotus enough for an exclusive deal.

Ok, that Dodge EV, is using Gen 1 RSX headlamps. Thats very lame. The car itself(idea/mechanics) is allright, hopefully it all goes through like its supposed to.

a rebadged Lotus Europa? What's next? a Ferrari adaption?

btw nice to see some development for Chrysler But I guess Lotus can get some more respect for their own "green" conceptions

Every automaker that wants to stay in existance needs to be developing these modern drivetrains and bringing them to market in a timely manner. Anyone with an ounce of business sense knows the most cost-effective way to do that is by converting existing vehicles first. The minivan and Jeep pictured both just hit the market in the past couple of years so rushing an entirely new vehicle to market would be a waste. Although I like the Volt, it doesn't have the seating capacity to fit my family. I'm hoping GM is porting the Volts technology to other vehicls in their lineup. A more utilitarian GM vehicle borrowing the Volt's technology could very easily outsell the Volt despite not having the Volt's "halo" image.
