Mitsubishi Motors UK has announced they are currently developing a race-prepared version of the Lancer Evo X in cooperation with former BTCC driver, James Kaye, for entry to the Britcar Championship on 20th – 21st September at Silverstone. Piloting the Evo X, which produces around 400hp while maintaining its all-wheel-drive configuration, is Kaye plus two other drivers who are yet to be named. The Evo X is currently being constructed by ADR Motorsport, the team which already builds and runs the two-works Mitsubishis currently competing in the British Rally Championship.

If all goes well Mitsubishi could take another step with a dedicated Evo X race series. General Manager for Ralliart Paul Brigden states, “Mitsubishi UK has not been involved with circuit racing for many years, so this new initiative is a great opportunity for us. Subject to the level of interest from competitors, we are also hoping to announce a one-make race-series for the Evolution X soon.”

Following the car’s Silverstone debut, Kaye is planning to contest a full season in the 2009 Britcar Championship, plus other selected endurance events.

Oh this is awesome. An Evo with 400bhp. If this goes well, The Evo could also be known as a Race car and a Rally car!

They should think about dropping the 4WD, not because the car needs it for BTCC but so it would be open to more series in the future. Though i think the Evo 4WD system is FWD based so going RWD would probably be hard.

I've always wondered why the evo's and even imprezas didn't do more track racing.

This could be the next trend in the future of BTCC, or road racing. A 4WD system applied in the road race, why not.... It's like Audi Quattro first introduced a 4WD system in the World Rally Champhionship.

Is Kaye the guy who raced Jeremy Clarkson in a Murcielago? And he spun it as well...

Electra, four-wheel drive cars have been used in circuit racing for years. But they provide very little gain (less rear wheel wear) and suffer from weight penalties. So powerful cars get rear-wheel drive (grand tourers, V8 Supercar, DTM) and Super 2000 or less powerful touring cars remain front-wheel drive.
