BMW to Enter Small Petrol Turbo Engine Fray

One or two turbos?

BMW brand will be turbocharging its smallest engines. We knew this of course, but this is the first confirmation by a BMW official of this fact. Jim O’Donnell, big boss of BMW in North America told Business Week that the engines will be 4-cylinder, turbocharged, offer stronger acceleration than the current 6-cylinder (NG6) and spew out better emission figures. Sounds impossible but Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz have been doing it for years already. That Bavaria was going to join the party was not a matter of if, but when. Ok, we still don’t know when, but at least we know it’s no longer IF. We also don’t know if these engines will be just one engine size or different sizes, and if they will use single turbos or two. Lots of ifs still, but we can live with these. By twin-turbocharging their 2-litre diesel engine in the 123D, BMW signaled their intention for smaller petrol powerplants as well. Remember, they first used these new generation turbos in their oil-sippers, then petrol. O’Donnell also could not confirm if this Euro-bound engine will cross the Atlantic or not, only to say it depends on the new US Federal government and how they view America’s energy future. How sad is that?

I love this website, but sometimes the writing is bad. Reading that paragraph was awful.

my guess BMW will equip its current 2.0 petrol engine with the turbo. That would be a nice combination.

A 135 with a nice little 2.0(or more)Turbo 4...would be GREAT it would also probably drop a bit of weight, improving overall dynamics...maybe even cost ?

Havnt they already done this? Atleast for the 1series. Why do they then purspound it so much if they havnt done it. When Audi and Merc did it along time ago. Ofcourse if BMW goes further with it. Putting gigantic quad turbos to a 1.4 litre making it produce gazzillions of bhp. Otherwise i just dont see this as News.

Knowing BM-trouble you, they will raise prices or leave them the same. They still think they are great cars, yet Chris "Worthless Hack" Bangle is still there designing crap (save for the 1 series).

If they do lower prices on their cars with the 4 cylinder engines, they will see a boost in sales. It would be one of their smarter moves. Getting rid of Bangle with no severance pay would be even better.

no, it´s not all true .. "..they first used these new generation turbos in their oil-sippers, then petrol."

The Turbo´d 745i was available before the first diesel was blown up; the 524td.

I think you fail to understand that the exact facts - there is a new turbo with new tech on it and this is a specific turbo being discussed - the article and discussion does not dispute the fact that turbos have been used before on petrols

I dislike. And couldn't even force myself to read the article. Change the font to 6, papyrus, that'll throw even more people off.
