Making it's public debut in Paris this October, Honda has revealed today the Insight concept. With design cues taken from the FCX Clarity, the Insight, which is built on a newly developed platform, is a 5-door hatchback seating five.

Although still in concept form, Honda confirms the Insight concept closely resembles the production version which will go on sale in Europe, Japan and North America during the first half of 2009.

With Honda's ongoing emphasis on cleaner powertrains, the Insight will be accompanied in Paris next to the FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell vehicle and CR-Z sports hybrid concept model.

As a dedicated hybrid model using Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid power plant, the Insight is described as being the most affordable hybrid vehicle to date.

Along with the Civic Hybrid, the new vehicle will be produced at Honda's Suzuka factory in Japan which recently has expanded hybrid motor production line.

Honda will reveal a concept version of its new global hybrid vehicle along with the official name, Insight, at the Paris Motor Show. The new dedicated hybrid will be exhibited along with the FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell vehicle and CR-Z sports hybrid concept model, demonstrating Honda's ongoing commitment to the development of cleaner powertrains.

Honda has always intended Hybrid vehicles to be a bridge to a hydrogen powered future, the potential of which has already been demonstrated by the FCX Clarity. The Insight Concept has clear stylistic links to the world's first production fuel cell car, with both vehicles' forms shaped to maximise the efficiency of their respective drivetrains.

The Insight Concept is the stylistic inspiration for the production version which will go on sale in 2009. From this unique position in the marketplace, Insight will open hybrid technology to a new generation of customers.

The Insight will benefit from a significant cost reduction in Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) components resulting in the most affordable hybrid vehicle to date. This dedicated hybrid vehicle will be offered as a 5-door hatchback with seating for five passengers and built on a newly developed platform. Engineers have mounted the compact control unit and battery beneath the boot space to give the Insight both a low centre of gravity and the practicality of a conventionally powered hatchback.

Insight will utilise various technologies, including a function to assist more fuel efficient driving giving customers a further improvement in real world fuel consumption. Along with the Civic Hybrid, the new vehicle will be produced at Honda's Suzuka factory in Japan which recently has expanded hybrid motor production line.

"The original Honda Insight launched in 1999 was the pioneer of hybrid technology in Europe and remains an iconic symbol of Honda's environmental innovation," said Takeo Fukui, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. CEO. "This new Insight will also break new ground by providing an affordable hybrid to an expanded number of customers craving great fuel economy and great value."

The Insight Concept is the culmination of two decades of hybrid petrol electric hybrid research and development. The Insight production vehicle will go on sale in Europe, Japan and North America during the first half of 2009.

by car_nut | September 4, 2008 5:28 PM
um ouch...hey they only help the Americans cuz the Volt is going to stomp all over this

by foose1397 | September 4, 2008 5:45 PM
Thanks to the American consumers, they have made Toyota the biggest manufacturer in the world...

Otherwise Toyota would still be half the size of GM!

by car_nut | September 4, 2008 5:58 PM
Oh snap, the Prius is done for. This looks pretty good.

by Tuner_mad | September 4, 2008 6:25 PM
Oh yeah the mythical VOLT.

by metatron | September 4, 2008 7:37 PM

by coopergt | September 4, 2008 7:40 PM

by fire_bird | September 4, 2008 8:45 PM
Honda is doing what Toyota always fail to do. Build better looking cars with better quality.

by brocky | September 5, 2008 5:27 AM
WTF is honda doing? it's doing the right thing. building efficient cars at affordable prices while making the world a better place. it doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

no wonder you title yourself as unknmown, only a greenpeace treehugger would say something that stupid. This whole crap about green friendly cars is hurting the auto industry and fuel prices. Most people will not buy electric cars or hybrid, be3cause they are a load of crap. We're killing the earth, who cares. We will not be effect by it and neither will our kids kids. It'll be still be hundreds of here from now before the world will be a waste land because of our actions and nothing we do now will prevent it. so we might as well just enjoy ourselves now. So bring on the V8, V10 and hell thrown in a coupld of V12 as well.

Well, in terms of hybrid cars, the Chevy Volt really stands out in comparison to the ugly cars the japs produce. If Chevy does in fact produce that car, bye bye Japan.

by nurchus | September 4, 2008 11:41 PM
Yeah, get ready to see alot of Warning lights on the Dash shortly after you purchase the Volt. =/

by Tuner_mad | September 4, 2008 11:51 PM
i would wa yrather have this than the prius...

by BabyMilo | September 5, 2008 12:30 AM
boy oh boy - everyone seems to really love comparing almost anything to everything to a fregging pri-arse! And I dont just mean on this site , almost every other car site I go to they talk about how everything compares with the pri"US"...

I do like this car, but I am wondering that by the time this reaches production what all changes will be made and whether the tyres are going to be tiny like the pri-ass

by si1982 | September 5, 2008 3:08 AM
I wanna bang Lindsey Lohan in this car!

by ghent2008 | September 5, 2008 4:12 AM
hope yuo have her tested first before you do.lol

by dmanero | September 5, 2008 6:25 AM
common guys, i'm i the only one to see that it is a copy from the prius with a Honda front, 3/4 looks exactly like the prius

by mc959 | September 5, 2008 6:31 PM
These ridiculous electrical hybrid cars are not clean as modern diesel engines. Engineers need to improve capacity of batteries to make real nature-friendly electrical cars. By carrying these heavy batteries, you've already producing more co2. We need lighter cars and more efficient engines nowadays.

by mechamynd | September 5, 2008 7:41 PM
We need more more powerplants for more energy to build more reasonably priced evironment-friendly hybrid car parts.

by alessandro | September 5, 2008 10:32 PM
What is the est. MPG? Anyone know? 2010 Prius predicted at 80+ mpg. I am currently a 2006 Civic hybrid leaser getting 45 mpg on average. Love it. Just hope this is not overpriced like the entire Honda line up.

by localized | September 6, 2008 4:05 PM
Prius copy?

by AE86 | September 6, 2008 7:51 PM
Brilliant look, I sincerely hope this style spreads to the rest of the range!

A question though, in the second picture, what is that car in the background? It goes Insight, FCX, and what?
