BMW X6 xDrive50i Vs Porsche Cayenne GTS at Nurburgring

Who wins the bragging right?

Not too long a go BMW threw the gauntlet down to the world's media when they “accidentally” leaked a document which compared the BMW X6 xDrive50i to the Porsche Cayenne GTS. Fortunately German magazine Autobild duly obliged and now we can see how the two powerhouses compared to each other at the famed Nurburgring track.

Starting with the official statistics of the model, we can see that the slightly lighter X6 has full acceleration bragging rights with a 0-60mph time of just 5.3 seconds, a full 0.8 seconds faster than the Cayenne GTS, it also boasts lower CO2 emissions. However it does fall down on the all important fuel consumption figure with it's counterpart's 15.54 miles per gallon – 14% lower than the X6.

When taking these expensively assembled vehicles to the racetrack though, these basic figures can sometimes by irrelevant, something Autobild was looking to find out. The magazine did a number of tests at the ring comparing best laps, acceleration, top-speed and braking, but who came out on top?

Braking showed very little to differentiate the models with a braking distance from 100km/h to 0 of 37.4 meters for the Cayenne GTS and just 30cm longer for the X6. The top speed tests saw the Porsche Cayenne GTS taking a decisive lead with a top speed of 263km/h, but the X6 had it's on board speed limiter denying it from going faster than 252km/h. As you would expect the X6 brought back on level terms in the acceleration tests going from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds with the Cayenne GTS lagging a whole second further behind.

Pretty much neck and neck now, all is left now is a showdown on the all important lap times around the Ring.

We can tell you the BMW X6 xDrive50i put in a best lap of 8min 54.4 seconds, but the Cayenne GTS was left crawling behind beyond the 9 minute barrier and more than 7 seconds a drift with a time of 9 mins 1.9 seconds.

The test certainly proves the BMW has come out on top on this one and it's lower price makes it an altogether better or more appealing buy.

the gts is better quality and better looks than the x6

by mmr66 | August 14, 2008 8:03 PM
mmr66 shouldn't talk about cars. Great i've been in both cars as well, referring to the cheap thin plastic like leather in the Porsche, BMW is better quality and every aspect of manufacturing their cars, as opposed to the super toureagit's being compared to.

by jmck2383 | August 14, 2008 11:40 PM
The Cayenne interior is tragic.

by benz_man | August 15, 2008 2:42 AM
The quality of the x6 is better than the gts! All the car magazines says that, not me. And the looks....well the x6 is sportier and prettier.

by RCarvalho | August 14, 2008 8:09 PM
why the X6?? shouldnt the porsche be compared to the X5??

by carcrazy1234 | August 14, 2008 8:23 PM
The X5 is now a true people mover with 7 seats. BMW will make an X5M but it will still be their family car. The Cayenne has always been just a massive 911. No one who ever bought it had any intention of going off road, even though it could if it wanted to. The GTS is the most road-oriented Cayenne ever. It is to the Cayenne range what the X6 is to the BMW X cars - the sports SUV for the road. BMW was smart enough to realise that something with that purpose needn't be practical for a family or even look like it. Hence the 6-series roof and 4 seats. I'd trust them both equally for quality and performance - they're both high on tech - but I think the Cayenne is hideous inside and out. If I had to choose one of these anti-SUVs, it'd be the Bimmer.

by motorjedi | August 15, 2008 9:29 AM
i have been in both the leather in the x6 is as hard as a rock

by mmr66 | August 14, 2008 8:26 PM
No, the leather is quite supple actually. The seat is hard as a rock though. Its better for long-haul comfort and just so happens to be good for your spine also...who'd a thought...

by benz_man | August 15, 2008 2:41 AM
the x6 is so ugly

by ght | August 14, 2008 8:47 PM
...and the cayenne is better?

by Lucifa | August 15, 2008 5:57 PM
the cayenne platform is 5 years old, the X6 is brand new, so surprisingly not too far behind. 5 years are lightyears in terms of developing technology. the next cayenne generation will come out in a year, it will def. kick the buttugly X6 to the moon.

by catchmyshadow | August 14, 2008 8:50 PM
what sort of comparison is this? bloody ridiculous! one is a tall hatchback with a rideheight that will see it barely scrape over a speedbump and one is a large SUV that in usual form is actually quite capable offroad. I think BMW should be sued $10,000 each time they call this x6 an offroader.

by huhnspinne | August 14, 2008 9:45 PM
i agree with carcrazy1234 it seems to me the the gts is in the X5's class

by jslcarfan | August 14, 2008 9:48 PM
The Porsche fanboys are on then! I have actually drove and compared both of these, the person who says the Porsche has better build quality is dreaming! It doesnt even come close. The X6 looks fantastic, the Porsche looks odd. The rideheight is about the same, in fact the Porsche is a lower car. If the X6 is so much of an ugly and pointless car, why are Land Rover now moving in with their own version, along with Audi and Merc waiting to see sales figures. Oh and residuals for the Cayenne!! omg!

by Laterzzz | August 14, 2008 10:14 PM
Both cars are useless SUVs! Did anyone tell the morons at BMW/Porsche that a $25k Renault with half the horsepower will trash both of these around Nring!? This comparison in ridiculous and completely useless for SUVs... It's like running the M6 vs the 911 Turbo on an offroad track...

by ShinyG | August 14, 2008 10:34 PM
M6 vs 911 Turbo on an offroad track would be awesome to see. But yeah, silly comparison for suv's. I sure hope gm doesn't step in spend 3 years, countless dollars and go, oh yeah, well our yukon can get a 8:53 lap time.

by Joe_Limon | August 14, 2008 11:11 PM
besides that, there is nothing a X6 can do. It hasn`t got a useful trunk, it hasn`t got big space in the rear and it hasn`t got big skills to go offroad. ah well i am wrong it can do something, it can look ugly :D

by catchmyshadow | August 14, 2008 11:17 PM
Love the X6

by yarghen | August 23, 2008 4:37 AM
THAT PORSCHE IS SO UGLY! BY THE WAY, WHO SAYS THAT THEY SHOULD NOT BE COMPARED ON THE TRACK? THEY ARE PERFORMANCE SUV AND NEITHER ARE MEANT FOR OFFROAD. THE FACT IS THAT THE PORSCHE USES SO MUCH VW STUFF THAT IT IS NOT ONLY UGLY WITH FAT ROLLS, BUT ALSO HEAVY WITH CR@P METALS AND VW COST CUTTING TECHNOLOGY.BMW X6 IS THE KING DEFINATELY, THAT'S WHY PORSCHE WANTS TO COPY ITS 1 SERIES AND THAT'S WHY AUDI COPIED BMW'S X3 WITH ITS UGLY Q5. BY THE WAY, HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT ALL VW GROUP PRODUCTS ARE FAT?

by GPKH | August 14, 2008 11:38 PM
VW cant make a profit because they spend too much money on their components. Where do you get "VW cost-cutting technology" from? Wherever you get it, you should tell VW, so they can make some money!

by benz_man | August 15, 2008 2:37 AM
you think the x3 is better looking than the current q5, clearly your perception is f*cked up

by trevor-k | August 15, 2008 3:05 AM
i would probably agree with the people who say the bmws interior has more quality but i think i wouldstill get the gts... i eamn the x6 is just sooo ugly

by BabyMilo | August 15, 2008 12:40 AM
Well well well. Just want to say one thing. Two years ago cousin of mine used to work for BMW as a sub. He is a hardcore BMW fan and he could not believe that they had a brand new Porsche Cayenne stripped into pieces with every part numbered. If u wonder where this great BMW SUV comes from well there u go.

by out4ride | August 15, 2008 12:42 AM
What a stupid comparison test! How can they compare Porsche and BMW. Porsche is in a higher league. BMW X6 should be compared to Ssangyong Actyon, Rexton, Musso and KIA Sorento. These are his competitors. X6 looks almost like Actyon. Come on, how can they even think about compering this two vehicles. You don't have to drive or see them. You just must know the name. Everything is in the name. Porsche wins!!! Who cares about the look, power, or comfort. It's about who has done their job better in the past.

by 3Iceman | August 15, 2008 12:44 AM
stop smoking

by benz_man | August 15, 2008 2:35 AM
so what your saying is if you build one good quality car, and everything else from that point on is shit, it shouldnt matter because you built that one good quality car, its clear you have NO IDEA what so ever about business.

by trevor-k | August 15, 2008 3:01 AM
You have successfully achieved two major things making your comments. You successfully proved to everybody you don't know anything about cars, and that you have turds for brains. Go drive a Porsche and then drive a BMW and come back and maybe make a reasonable comment.

by jmck2383 | August 15, 2008 3:15 AM
If I had to choose between these two I would take the Porsch. I wouldn't even try driving the X6 because it's BMW. BMW means nothing to me. It's Porsche or Mercedes Benz. I don't care how good BMW's are. When I see one it feels so blank. No history, no name, no passion. Just car to show off. The only good looking BMW is X5 and everything else is so ugly.

by 3Iceman | August 15, 2008 10:39 AM
wow. you were right jmck2383. he really doesn't know anything about cars... like at all.

by Lucifa | August 15, 2008 12:01 PM
BMW X6 the best SUV on earth, at least until X6 M!!!!!

by X5M | August 15, 2008 1:26 AM
almost every bmw driver wants to be a porsche driver but almost no porsche driver want to be a bmw driver, end of thread. Porsche OWNS :D

by catchmyshadow | August 15, 2008 3:35 AM
wow thats powerful man! i cant believe you reckon that bmw drivers want to be porshe drivers haha, y do people buy m3's over 911's? price and practicality are two fundermental reasons. porshes are fantastic cars but they only appeal to a market sector like everyother manufacturer. people buy what they want!!

by yarghen | August 23, 2008 4:44 AM
anyone who would take a x6 over a gts given the option for both is DUMB

by illest813 | August 15, 2008 4:11 AM
The older the Cayenne becomes the more it looks like another version of the Tourag or maybe Tourag GTI?

by archytype | August 15, 2008 4:15 AM
I love the looks of the X6. Very different but these two are in seperate classes are they not.

by BOOGIE_WOOGIE | August 15, 2008 4:25 AM
They are SUV's maybe they should compete off-road. These remain as the stupid poster kids of a society losing its sense of rationality.

by V6s_stink | August 15, 2008 4:26 AM
Funny how the X6 gets labeled ugly and pointless yet we have other manufacturers itching to have their own versions of an X6. Not to mentions sales for the X6 is astronomical. BMW could care less about the moaning by some people. They're making the $$$. I guess BMW must be doing something right.

by BOOGIE_WOOGIE | August 15, 2008 4:51 AM
@ V6s_stink :

You really think they should compete offroad ? Are you kidding me ?!! Both would suck offroad.

by BOOGIE_WOOGIE | August 15, 2008 4:55 AM
V6_stink is right. Such things ar possible due the authoritarian irrationalism of society which produces and uses that kind of creations (on roads!).

by alessandro | August 15, 2008 1:14 PM
WTF are you guys talking about ??..X6 is so fuken ugly .i cant stand for it.what the meaning of coupe SUV from BMW designers.? they just simply took X5 front end and twisted it into the 335i rear end, ..thats it ..shame on BMW

by andy | August 15, 2008 4:57 AM
Whats the weight difference between the two, the x6 looks a lot lighter.

by gumball | August 15, 2008 6:49 AM
@ andy :

X6 is selling like hot cakes and BMW's raking in the cash. Yep shame on BMW and the X6 for being a resounding success in sales. LOL, you people crack me up.

by BOOGIE_WOOGIE | August 15, 2008 10:05 AM
in case of SUVs specially those the most powerful my vote is going to ML63 AMg and G55 AMG, then Cayenne Turbo S and also upcoming Audi Q7 V12 TDI, to not speak about others....so where is BMW??? Is just the cheapest and good option in middle power range...cos high powered X5 is not there and even if...it would be underpowered (that means a lot less torque) than competition...

by swifthead | August 15, 2008 10:14 AM
The fact remains. X6 beat the sh1t out of the P.C gts on the race track. Cars with so much torque to waste are good for pulling caravans and i can't just picture an expensive SUV pulling a caravan. These SUV's bar the land Rover, Land Cruiser, pajero and Prado are City SUV's and are not meant for bundu bashing. The X6 is here to stay and pretty soon it will have competitors breathing down it's back judging by the exposure it is getting in it's still young life. For a car of it's weight and height to acheive such a time on the race track is 'touchy' to the rival camps.

Well done WCF and BMW for this article.

by Wisp | August 15, 2008 11:20 AM
and the cayenne's any better?

by Lucifa | August 15, 2008 11:55 AM
doesn't the Porsche cayenne like dominate the transsyberian rally every year?

by gumball | August 15, 2008 12:34 PM
X6 is soooo ugly.

by kimbo | August 15, 2008 12:39 PM
Bigger won. So predictible.

by alessandro | August 15, 2008 1:15 PM
Yeah, right. BMW X6 beat Porsche Cayenne GTS. You can't bloody compared X6 to Porsche Cayenne GTS. Just like comparing lemon and Orange. Get real BMW. Ugly X6!!!

by American-Rules | August 15, 2008 3:11 PM
Out of the two in my choice, the Porsche Cayenne looks the most desirable.

by zzz | August 15, 2008 3:51 PM
3Iceman: CLEARLY YOU ARE FROM THE PAST. PORSCHE NOWADAYS IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RUBBISH BRAND VW AND MERCEDES IS JUST FOR THOSE OLD FOLKS. SO MY GUESS IS THAT YOU MUST BE IN YOUR 60'S OR 70'S, SO STOP BEING SO LOUD ABOUT YOUR VIEWPOINTS BECAUSE YOU ONLY REPRESENT 8% OF THE POPULATION THAT IS IN THIS MARKET. THE FACT IS THAT GUYS IN THEIR LATE 30'S TO 50'S ARE IN THIS MARKET AND THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN AN OLD MERC NOR A SENSELESS UGLY VW ASSOCIATED PORSCHE

by GPKH | August 15, 2008 5:32 PM
my friend is 21 and he drives a porsche, I dont see many 30 year olds buying them. VW isn't a bad brand the golf is a bargain and for the price it is a great car,

being associated with VW is better than being with Fiat, mini or a luggage company lmao.

by gumball | August 15, 2008 6:07 PM
BMW RULES The X6 Clearly is the better car in all aspects Porsche have got another thing coming with the new X5M and X6M. Porsche loved it when the 4.8i SE failed close behind the GTS but you cannot compare them when the X5M comes out then we will see but for now the X5 + X6 RULES .

by BmwA5H | August 15, 2008 5:58 PM
The people crying are the Porsche fanboys. Go figure.

by Xenicide | August 16, 2008 3:55 AM
I am no fan of Cayenne, even though I love Porsche. I have to give it to the BMW. I think this car looks better than the Cayenne and now it goes better than the Cayenne. I am SOLD.

by The_woo_factor | August 16, 2008 6:35 AM
GPKH. VW is rubbish?....come on...seriously. I agree with the comment about merc for old folks though.

by The_woo_factor | August 16, 2008 6:37 AM
All these three-four brands are depersonalizing rubbish, Porsche incl..

by alessandro | August 16, 2008 10:21 AM
If you will buy a Mercedes , Audi or BMW you will look like your neibhour.

by alessandro | August 16, 2008 10:28 AM
Is this the ugly contest or what?

by kevoluetion | August 16, 2008 12:06 PM
the x6 looks much sexier

by jalaad123 | August 16, 2008 5:08 PM
3Iceman please when u write a comment try to make sense, but if u think u cannot beacuse ur 3 years old kid who doesnt know anything i mean ANYTHING about cars then dont comment at all please. WTH r u talking about BMW didnt do the homework? BMW doesnt have Racing History? please GROW UP. just because ur a big hardcore Porsche fan doesnt mean u can talk sh*t about BMW. i like Porsches but in this comparison BMW is the obvious winner..... and because i'm a BMW fan i think BMW looks better too.... but thats just my opinion

by GoTTaLoVeBiMMeR | August 17, 2008 12:41 PM
its so funny when people talk about X6. i mean u guys say WTH is that SUV/coupe... it doesnt make sense. well if it doesnt make sense how come u guys dont talk about MB CLS. does the 4 door coupe make sense??? no it doesnt but it worked and people bought the car. so now its BMWs turn. and yes it worked again. a lot of people buy X6

by GoTTaLoVeBiMMeR | August 17, 2008 12:48 PM
You have gotta love Mr Bimmer. Well said super fan, bimmers are great cars to drive - especially on the limit.

You gotta love that car.

by Wisp | August 19, 2008 9:23 AM
bmw is great car and have abig power but i dont like this kind i prefer the prosch prosch

by hilalth | August 19, 2008 9:48 AM
The X6 rocks, Porche is rather low key for me.

by moloto | August 19, 2008 2:02 PM
THE PORCHE IS TOO OLD

by 12hansAJ | August 20, 2008 5:52 AM
Glad to see there is a lot of good response towards the BMW X6. The X6 was designed and built by BMW without the help or use of any other manufacturer's parts or designers, not like Porsche where they had to incorporate the VW Tauraq chassis on them.Half VW half Porshe? We had both these vehicles tested in the Middle East on and off road and the X6 came out top, thanks to the clever X-drive system from the X5 combined with the dynamic performance control system which is the first in the world.BMW is always ahead of the game, the others follow!

by BMWAD | August 20, 2008 8:52 PM
The Bmw X6 is way above the Porsche Cayenne in terms of quality, class, driving ability and panache. The X6 lets face it porsche fans is BETTER. People have NO sense when they say the X6 is worse than the GTS go back to your prissy little plastic Cayennes and stay their BMW RULES THE SAV market along with other niches.

by BmwA5H | August 21, 2008 5:07 PM
:'(... for the love of BMW... that's the only reason I have hereby decided that I forgive BMW for creating this monstrosity and hereby wish that maybe one day, I will. too see, what the people who like the X6 see.

This comparison has however shown me the error of my ways... I hereby declare that I now reckon the Cayenne is butt-ugly...

by Decypha | August 26, 2008 7:39 PM
I still say the same as when the BMW first came out, What is the point in this car? If you want a 4x4 get the X5, if you want a sports coupe get the 6-Series, and if you want both... You really need to get friends. I prefer the Cayenne.

by Kieranieo | September 2, 2008 1:47 AM
Kieranieo, Looks wise porsche have been behind from day one, I only warmed to them when I heard he performance, the BMW looks delicious, and fusing a sports car with a 4x4 is probably the sexiest thing done car wise in years, bmw have pulled this off brilliantly, porsche is way behind looks and theme wise, and I'm sure people will want both sports and 4x4 in a car, I'd be very surprised if they aren't queuing up for the X6. Keep the faith.

by mike_ten1962 | September 13, 2008 2:17 AM
Joe_Limon August 14, 2008 11:11:34 PM M6 vs 911 Turbo ,

Doen't put ideas into BMW's already oscar winning head, or they will try that next, keep the faith .
