Nissan has put together a driver's assistance technology sandwich which ultimately aims for “collision free” driving. By incorporating two new technologies called Side Collision Prevention (SCP) and Back-up Collision Prevention (BCP) combined with current systems Distance Control Assist (DCA) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Nissan has created a “safety shield” concept to help prevent incoming collisions from multiple directions.

For Nissan, the goal is to cut in half the number of traffic fatalities or serious injuries involving Nissan vehicles by 2015 compared with the level in 1995.

NISSAN PREVIEWS ALL-AROUND “COLLISION FREE” PROTOTYPE

- Two all-new technologies introduced: Side Collision Prevention and Back-up Collision Prevention -

TOKYO (August 5, 2008) - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd has unveiled an All-Around Collision Free prototype incorporating two all-new technologies – Side Collision Prevention (SCP) and Back-up Collision Prevention (BCP). Incorporating the available Distance Control Assist (DCA) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems, this latest prototype vehicle further extends Nissan’s “Safety Shield” concept to help protect the vehicle and its occupants from potential risks coming from multiple directions.

Side Collision Prevention: When the driver decides to change lanes, the side-mounted sensors activate a warning if an approaching vehicle is detected in the driver’s intended lane. A yaw mechanism is then activated through brake control of individual wheels, to help prevent a potential collision.

Back-up Collision Prevention: During a reversing manoeuvre, rear and side-mounted sensors detect objects in the path of the vehicle. If an object is detected an alarm sounds followed by the activation of the brakes, to help avoid a collision in situations such as when a vehicle is backing out of a parking space.

The DCA helps maintain an adequate following distance, while the LDP helps to prevent the vehicle from veering off its designated driving lane. Both the DCA and LDP systems complement the SCP and BCP to create the All-Around Collision Free prototype. The warning system and pre-emptive safety features are designed to help support the driver in an intuitive manner with minimal intervention.

On a global level, Nissan is committed to build safer vehicles equipped with advanced safety technologies. In Japan, the company’s safety vision is to halve the number of traffic fatalities or serious injuries involving Nissan vehicles by 2015 compared with the level in 1995.

Nice idea, but those beeping (or the sound it will make) sounds will be annoying around traffic.

I have a novel idea -- why don't people just learn to drive properly? Although I am not against technologies that actively work towards reducing collisions, I am opposed to technologies that work to replace fundamental driving skills -- i.e. Using mirrors. Some people simply do not have the physical and/or mental capacity to drive. Driving is not a right you are gifted by living in a free country; it is a privilege. And if you aren't able to back out of a space or change a lane without endangering the lives of others, maybe it is time you got a bus pass.

I agree with you guys but sometimes there is a blind spot. This is espically true when you are backing up and realize at the last second that there is someone that is not willing to stop for you as you back up. This will tell you that someone is comming when you are backing up when both cars either side of you are blocking your vision.
