2009 Subaru Impreza WRX Gets 265hp (US)

As per the recently leaked memo, Subaru of America announced today the 2009 Impreza WRX will indeed receive a 41hp increases via its revised 2.5-liter flat-four engine. With a larger turbo, larger-diameter exhaust and low-density catalyst for reduced backpressure, the 2009 WRX makes a total of 265hp at 6,000 rpm and 244 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm.

Compared to the 2008 model which had 224 hp and 226 lb.-ft., the 2009 is only available as a 5-speed manual transmission. For those who want an automatic transmission will have to settle for the new Impreza GT model, which receives the old 224hp 2.5-liter turbo.

The 2009 WRX also receives a few other goodies such as the Aero Package as standard (formerly part of the optional WRX Premium Package), STI-type grille with WRX badge, revised suspension with increased spring rates, STI upper strut mounts, stiffer shocks plus thicker front and rear stabilizer bars. Also standard are 17 x 7-inch alloy wheels with 225/45R17 summer performance tires, compared to 205/50R17 all-season tires on the 2008 WRX.

The interior for 2009 gains a new WRX-exclusive carbon black checkered upholstery accented by red stitching. The standard tilt and telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel is also accented by red stitching and standard aluminum-alloy pedal covers now include the driver’s footrest.

If you recently bought a 2008 WRX, you have our sympathies.

Whoopie! Me likey.

I saw a WRX-S at the British motorshow, and it looks badass. The hood scoop is huge, the Rear spoiler fits in with the design, and it looks aggresive all together.

If you see a picture of it, you'll say it looks like some old korean car, but in real life, it's totally different.

Thats how it should have looked like from the start, much better! Now with 265hp, thats a big improvement over the current model. Lets see if Mitsubishi will increase the Lancer Ralliart's 237hp engine.

I wonder if the WRX models in other markets will also get a similar upgrade for 2009?

The car is good and everything, but this particular design has to be the FUGLIEST ever made.

That's what they said about the Bugeye, the Pignose, and just about every other Impreza ever made. Forgive me if I don't take you, or anybody else declaring that this essentially bland and conservative design is "OMG LOL fugly" seriously, because you'll also be the ones pining for it when the NEXT Impreza redesign comes out, which will also be the fugliest ever.

lol, typical German car fan bragging about their bigger engines.

I don't really care much about huge engines. most tuners have got enough power already. They don't need it because they aren't as heavy as German cars are heavy and have overdone high tech stuff in the interior you don't really need.

audi better 4wd then subaru? haha, doubtful. If you ever have a chance, take a look at the subaru's underbody, everything is so beefy. Subaru has been solely making 4wd cars for over a decade now, they know what they are doing.

Let me get this straight... you're saying the RS4 is better than the standard Rex. At 4 times the price it would want to be! That's like saying the 430 Scuderia is better than a Ford Focus. For my money I'd still take the Rex. Have owned one for years. Love it! (& more bang for your buck!)

Oh, please gag me with a spoon. You could buy a STi AND a regular WRX AND have some dough left over for hookers and blow for what you'd pay for one RS4 - if you're gonna compare, at least stick to apples and oranges, rather than apples and goats. A car four times the price is not a fair comparison to anybody but a braindead German fanboy.

Yes, the new Impreza sedan is mainly for the North American market, but some markets will also get it at a later date. Subaru Australia for example is about to add the Impreza sedan to their lineup.
