2011 Audi RS4 Not a Turbo

High-revving V8 stays, shared with RS5

We were very happy with the Audi RS4, weren’t we? Aggro styling, those menacing side gills, Quattro, flat-bottomed steering wheel, those Recaro seats. And plenty more. Oh yeah, that high-revving naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 whose sound makes you think of a heavy metal band fronted by Thor himself. But what next? Already a lot is being said about the next RS4, a car we are to officially see for the first time in 2010, with European sales beginning in 2011. The main topic is obviously the powertrain. New 7-speed double-clutch gearbox will be on offer, alongside a 6-speed manual, in addition to a rear-wheel-biased Quattro system.

Because the new S4 uses a 3.0-litre supercharged engine for its power, some have speculated similar offerings for the RS4 as well as earlier-coming RS5. Now Fourtitude says they are quite certain, after dinner with an Audi executive, that RS4 will retain its current 4.2-litre but bump up power from current 309kW levels up to even 350kW. Very possible. Yet we can’t shake off the feeling that more is on offer, especially considering the power space Audi has put between itself in the RS6 and the rest (M5 and E63 AMG). Why would they only put a mere 20kW or so between themselves and the current power-champ, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG?

One of the main drivers for the entire Audi organisation is the beating of BMW at every level. Assuming this still holds true, we just cannot see Audi turbo-charging an RS4 again before M turbocharges an M3.

German Machismo anybody?!!

by GranTurismo | July 31, 2008 3:36 PM
lol, fail. They used the rendering of the RS5.

by Tuner_Mad | July 31, 2008 5:01 PM
...the article references the RS5 also...

VERY NICE! Gotta love slightly better fuel economy and power on demand. Bravo!

Cheers!

by nurchus | July 31, 2008 8:01 PM
bmw and now audi are backwards in there battle for fuel economy. You don't get more efficient cars by making larger displacement naturally aspirated engines. If that was true, the viper would emit rain drops and sunlight. A smaller similarly powered turbo charged engine will give you better fuel economy. That being said, screw fuel economy! These cars are beasts, and I would love to drive/own them.

joe_lemon, BMW leads all luxury automakers with fuel efficiency and emmissions as they continue to gallop all over other car makers with increased sales. this is the new muscle on the road.

by carfan58 | August 1, 2008 12:23 AM
wrong, not a single one of there cars makes it over 20mpg in the city. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/compx2008f.jsp?hiddenField=Manufacturer&year=2008&make=BMW

by joe_limon | August 1, 2008 1:02 AM
actually, weird as this may sound, if you compare all the different manufacturers this way, American car companies are doing really well http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/2008bymanuf.jsp?year=2008

Haha, how does a story that started with an RS4 and its high-revving V8 end with discussions about fuel economy? Save it for the Honda Jazz or something.

Another thing, whoever rendered the RS5 image on the top is lazy as hell - he's just changed the badge. Where's the wider track, pumped wheel arches, power hump etc. If that's what it will look like, I don't want one.

by motorjedi | August 1, 2008 4:08 AM
sorry but yes, that have fuel economie ,because that tanck less than my ford ranger v6 4 litters body, and that have the double of hp 400, but same torque 240, like the M3.

by ti-max525 | August 1, 2008 6:16 AM
your ford ranger is a truck. no matter what engine you put in it, it is going to get horrible mileage. They aren't aerodynamic or light weight, smaller engines need to work harder and thus pump more gas.

Pheeww.... There is a god. For a minute there I thought all hope was lost. I was worried that I would have to set my sights on something else. I agree Ceven... The world is a much better place now and to add to that; I may sleep much soundly as well.

Shouldn't this though be an RS5? Based on the picture anyway.. Their A5 sure is a gorgeous car. Have been waiting to see what they do with the RS version. Always been an M3 person, but with the latest agressive styling of theirs, am leaning more to the Audi RSs now.

by daimion | August 1, 2008 8:00 AM
OooKkk... how dumb of me. Just noticed that small print that the pic's an RS5 rendering...

HYDROGEN 7 JOEY LIMEON, you drink the emissions, American car companies produce nothing but absolute garbage riddled with problems. American car companies are backwards....in business your suppose to MAKE MONEY...HAHAHAH BILLIONS FLUSHED...BMW IS THE UTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE.

by carfan58 | August 1, 2008 8:08 AM
hahaha, hydrogen 7. please. Do you know anything about hydrogen cars aside from the fact that they make water? First of all, to make hydrogen you have to use a tremendous amount of energy. The process to make it is now only about 70% efficient. Then to store it you have to super cool it so that you get liquid hydrogen, this requires more energy, so you are down to about 55% of the energy left in it is comparable to what you put into it. Next if you use the fuel cell at room temperature you will only get about 60% chemical to electrical efficiency, if you do it at about 800 celcius then you can get as high as 90% efficiency... but to do that you have to invest a lot more energy converting that supercooled liquid nitrogen to a super heated gas... and then there are electric motors which are only about 80% efficient... in comparison to a gasoline powered vehicle where 30-40% of the chemical energy is converted into forward momentum, the hydrogen vehicle uses about 15% of the originally invested source, couple that with the fact that most power plants are only 70% efficient and you have one mighty un-green vehicle. Try electric dude, at least the only bad thing there is chemical inefficiencies in storing power and the fact that the battery might end up in a landfill.

it you want a truly green car, http://www.automedia.com/Volvos_Concept_for_Cleaning_the_Air/dsm20030601vc/1

no it isn't a high revving large displacement v10 *eyesroll*

how come audi only interested in beating BMW ? what about MB..is MB a different kind of " target "..anyway love the 4.2 litre NA..

by phobos | August 1, 2008 8:19 AM
Yeah right. The M3 will be 5 years old then in 2011. They Audi RS4 will strain to beat an old car then and after they beat an old M3 they ullulate and party like they've achieved a great feat (narrowly beating an old car then) then what happens thereafter? BMW releases an M3 in probably 2012 or 2013 which will be 2 years younger than the 2011 RS4. Oh yeah the RS4 will pull it's obvious trick by dissappearing into the forest with it's exhausts stuck between it's rear tyres. Why can't Audi synchronise there RS cars times to BMWs and Merc AMG's coz BMW and Merc at least have a fair fight as their cars are quite the same age. Audi always preys on the dated soon to be replaced M cars and AMG's. I challenge them to release their cars at the same times as the other two then we'll have a leveled playing ground.

Do you always whine this much, or only when you have the opportunity to fanboy out on BMW?

by Snark21883 | August 1, 2008 7:24 PM
AMG, M, and RS are all very finely tuned efficient machines. Sophisticated muscle with luxury
