Fiat 500-based, same engines

The new Ford Ka is expected to be officially presented to the public only when the 2008 edition of Paris Motor Show opens its doors. Its pictures should be released a little earlier, but Ford probably didn't want this "earlier" to be so soon. On purpose or not, the fact is that the first image of Ford's supermini is out on the Web. And here it is.

Although we only have one image of the car, it is enough to confirm the information we have gathered during all this time, including the precise OmniAuto.it rendering we have published a while ago.

Produced in Tychy, Poland, the next generation Ford Ka shares its platform with Fiat 500, but not only that. The engines, a 1.25-litre petrol powerplant and a 1.3-litre Multijet, diesel, already offered in the Italian car, will also be available for Ka, probably with different calibrations. More powerful motors will be used in the future, to challenge other “pocket rockets” like Renault Twingo RS and Fiat 500 Abarth, but Ford will surely try to put the Ka apart with a special suspension tuning.

It is coming here. Ford announced last week that they are bringing in 6 small cars from EU to the NA market. This has to be one of them.

Kinda looks a lot like the Mazda 2 btw.

Most of the components are shared between Mazda and Ford Europe. This time they shared the styling albeit I prefer the front end on this one.

Mazda 6 = Ford Mondeo

Mazda 3 = Ford Focus

Mazda 2 = Ford Fiesta

I saw some Americans complain about how they're not getting European cars in the US but all they have to do is buy a Mazda.

LMS, unlike the Mazda 2/Ford Fiesta and Mazda 3/Ford Focus, the the new Mazda 6 does not share its platform with the new Mondeo which uses the Ford-Volvo EUCD platform. The new Mazda 6 uses an updated version of the Ford-Mazda CD3 platform and retains its front double wishbone suspension vs EUCD platform's MacPherson struts.

I stand corrected.

That also explains the more noticable differrence in pricing.

Yes, How very Mazda, smaller than a Mazda 2, more like the upcoming Mazda 1.

Oooh, cute shape. I wonder if this will last more than a decade like the Current Ka did.

I guess it depends on how long its Fiat twin will stay in production. I believe its also produced in the same Fiat Auto Poland factory.

what the bloody hell is this? not remotely original as the original. design wise its a re hash of the fiesta/2/corsa. with the customary (well now anyway) ford headlights that have come from peugeot's school of design in that they are overstyled oversized "could be anything" from the front, cars. not forgetting the "so tired i cant even YAWN" grille" that it tacks on to all models of late. probably sell by the bucket load no doubt. well at least this one is going to achieve success in one area, and that is that it makes the original look even better.

Its a Fiat 500 restyled to look like a Fiesta.

I agree with Asif, the lacks the uniqueness and originality of the current model. This is basically now just a small Fiesta (I know it always has been but at least it looked different before). It will age incredibly quickly and certainly won't last 10 years as the current model has, as soon as Ford facelift the Fiesta in 3 years this will need to be updated too.

Having said that I still like it, it's an attractive car and is bound to be reasonable priced and a good drive, I just wished they had given it another name and not diluted the KA one. Only aspect of the design I don't like is the Vauxhall Corsa inspired rear end, although as they were designed by the same person I guess this is to be expected.
