My son has his first karting race today, and wow am I excited! The fact that the race track is the same one Formula 1 drivers Mika Häkkinen, Mika Salo and Kimi Räikkönen have started their careers adds to the excitement, but regardless, I am a proud father today. So to commemorate the occasion, a couple of karting stories are in order.
After watching this video of "Kartvader" on the streets of Quebec from 2006, memories of the almost classic illegal street race series Getaway in Stockholm come flooding back. But this time, the vehicle of choice is a shifter kart. Distinguished by its 125cc two-stroke engine with 6-speeds, it's capable of 0-60 mph in just over 3 seconds and has a top speed of 115 mph (185 km/h) with enough pavement in front.
