Going into its debut at the British International Motor Shows last week, Renault's Mégane R26.R already claims bragging rights for new lap record in Nürburgring, Germany with a time of 8m 17s.

With only 450 units to be produced, the R26.R is based on the Mégane F1 Team R26 and uses the same engine and six-speed gearbox. However, the R26.R has been lightened by 123kg and features specific suspension calibration.

I think record means video record not lap record.

I was wrong! From Carscoop.blogspot.com: "new lap record for a front-wheel-drive production car on the 'Ring with a time of 8m 17s"

And so Renault joins the Nring times battle! Hope to see similar performance from the other hatchback manufacturers soon.

Who was driving? Stig?

Hah! The STIG! Some say if he were to catch on fire, he would burn for an eternity.

Ok, it was E. Fittibaldi!

Awesome. You get a car thats faster than a previous gen M3 and the new Camaro. This is easily one of the greatest Renaults ever built along side the R5 and the Clio Sport V6.

Opel is developing an Astra "light weight edition" too, could be an interesting Nürburgring battle.

The normal Astra OPC did 8:35.93 two years ago with Manuel Reuter driving it.

Hits fuel cut @ 7:42

I'm sure they could have fit another couple hundred camera changes in there - maybe then they could have made it look like it was sub-8 minutes. Blatantly obvious all those those pointless view changes are hiding cuts in the run to make it seem faster than it was.

Must try harder Renault.
