New 2010 BMW 5 Series Rendered

Concept CS Base

Several spy shots are all over the internet, depicting the next BMW 5 Series which is due for unveiling in 2010 and goes on sale in most world markets in 2011. Our artist has put CGI and Photoshop together to create an agile rendering of the 5 Series using the concept CS as a basis.

Several existing technologies will feature in the 5 Series, including further improved iDrive, FlexRay processing, the electro-magnetic handbrake, HUD, as well as Active Steering. Bigger, wider and longer than current 5, new car grows in size but not by much. BMW’s new double-clutch M-DCT gearbox with 7 speeds is part of the package. Currently the ‘box can handle close to 600Nm in torque.

Key engines will be the 3.0-litre twin turbo petrol, 2.0-litre twin turbo diesel, the hybrid and the 4.4-litre twin turbo V8. Three brand new engines will also feature, introducing themselves through the 5 and include a new compact super diesel making well over 700Nm. Later in 2013 the mighty M5 should be seen boasting over 450kW under the hood. What is unclear at this point is if that power will come force-fed or by natural means. BMW spokespersons have said the company does not rule out turbocharged M cars, "as long as they keep to the traditions of what an M car stands for". Be assured though that whatever it is, it does not yet exist and will debut as a brand new engine.

You need more exclamation points. It's not quite clear what a BMW fanboy you are yet.

In proof-reading, exclamation marks are called 'shrieks'.

...I like it over the current design...too bad BMW did not give the new 7series a more CS inspired look. I think the bigger grill from the CS concept would look better also...

This i must say is a rude shock to Audi. ha ha ha the fight just got stronger. Yeah take another look at that car - tell me who wouldn't gasp at that sexy damn good looking mean machine. Imagine Mr Muscles in a suit. Yeah continue playing catch up what with the tirbo engines or whatever earkaked for this car hopefully with the X drive - damn! for sure the fight just got harder.

Good luck.

Too bad it will never look this good. They will probably do another 7 series with the 5 and end up making it look crap and boring, nothing like the CS. The camoflaged 5 series doesn't seem to fit this design either. We can only hope it wwill look this good, but BMW will probably let us down again like with the boring 7 series.

July 25, 2008 4:43:05 PM

'American Rules' point one, why would you be comparing the styling of a 2 door sports coupe with a 4 door family saloon/sedan...? Anyway, typical yank.

The shoulder line is too high, front grille and bumper look good nice and agressive, the current 5 Ser sport really benefits from the predatory styling and purposeful styling. Just lose the Lexus side profile please!

OMG i just thought of a "new" segment that BMW has not yet filled! the 5 series liftback version, for all those highly cashed up people who "have to buy a mazda 6, but prefer a rear wheel drive german luxo sedan looks, but hatch convenience!"

some of you may find this comment pointless, I find the article a bit stupid ... the artist rendering are all okay, but they are not BMW artist...

July 25, 2008 6:25:47 PM

Personally, I like the front a lot. I know this is just a photoshop and just a creative measure, but the back door, C-pillar and decklid look to close to the current Mazda 3.

andy
July 25, 2008 8:22:48 PM

i think it looks so damn close to W204 C class ...the eyeslids, aerodynamic line on sidebody, mirrors, LED clear signal are from C class

That modelling guru did learn from 7-series: big nostrils, Piggie like. Lets hope BMW learns too and will make an European car.

No, no. This rendering looks way better than 7-series. But these nostrilis! Whole front design is like sewed onto pretty good body design! Look image taken from back, exellent!

You need brains to understand any design language. BMW is just one of many movements in our present moment. It is not better or worse than any nor is it the leading trend it simply contains elements with do get integrated into the whole but it is not the whole itself. BMW would like you to believe this is the case and from some of the BMW fan post you do believe that BMW is leading the pack. But in reality it leads and follows at the same time. It is to fragile to lead and afraid of being passed by other German rivals that is why the design language is being toned down on some of the vehicles. BMW knows that it cant lead to much it must reintegrate the wish of the whole not just its designers. That is why it is just one of many car companies and always will.

SalimAl-Abri
July 27, 2008 9:38:07 AM

What is all of this debate for?? those are only renderings, they're not official and artist impressions are alway better looking than reality. I'm almost sure that the real thing will be a toned down 7-series which is to say AGLYYYY.

xenomorph
July 27, 2008 8:28:00 PM

Unfortunately I think you are absolutely correct. BMW can make very interesting designs if they want e.g. the CS concept (which this photo is based off) but they seem to just opt for the safe and boring design in the end, e.g. the pigman 7 series wretch. I have never been more dissapointed by any car than the new 7 series design and I feel that the new 5 series will continue the 7 series trend. Why would they suddenly turn around and implement the CS design in the 5 series when they had the chance to do so with the new 7 series?

SalimAl-Abri
July 28, 2008 9:51:56 AM

It is always said that BMW has lost it's glamour since CHRIS BANGLE took styling responsibility. To put things back in their correct track, this man should be sent back home (America). Because of him, BMW is no more the beuaty leader and it is losing fans..

Wisp
July 28, 2008 10:30:54 AM

Andy are you serious in saying that the 5 series has taken some design cues from the C Class. So the C class was the first car to have those eye brow indicators? Well mi lad, the current 5 and the 6 have eye brow indicators and that side profile the C Class has is 3 series like. Go check.

Lutzie
July 31, 2008 3:41:33 AM

Well... I think that side profile proportion for this class of car probably really started with the 1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E, which STILL looks pretty smart.

July 28, 2008 4:38:48 PM

Can we talk some facts please!? If BMW is losing fans how are they achieving record sales? Just because U do not like the design, it doesnt mean they are 'losing fans'. I say commenting should be restricted to those who own a driving license.

i think the E60 5er is a very unique and very beautiful design, and it will definately become a classic, it was a complete redefinition of the 5 series look, but it worked so well. The next generation will be less shocking probably, but I just hope it will as well balanced as the current one.

bingle
August 16, 2008 2:37:26 AM

Where on earth did you get that from? The E60 has NEVER been considered beautiful and neither will it be considered a classic. You could argue I suppose that's a testament to just how good it is to drive.

But dude! If you think it's beautiful, I'd really hate to see what your woman looks like.

Cozy7

It's not typical obviously.
