SPECULATION: Next Audi TT Gets Mid-Engine Layout

R8-inspired

Ingolstadt’s halo car the Audi R8, is for good reason, the benchmark against which a number of future sports cars are to be measured. Smaller brother TT is now said to be investigating the mid-layout of its next engine, no small thanks to R8. Engineers and designers at Audi are fascinated by this type of setting which greatly enhances automobile balance resulting in improved handling. Additionally Quattro can be set for a 60:40 distribution setup in high-performance cars like the RS 4, giving even more legs to the handling argument.

TT III is still a long way away; 2013 to be exact, with a facelift for mid-2009. But sketches are already doing the rounds and a final decision will be made within the next two years. Will we be looking through a thick glass panel into TT III’s engine bay? If Porsche approves this then we will. But if they feel the TT will eat larger chunks into the next Cayman and Boxster then no approval will be given.

i highly doubt the mid engine layout... unless of course this is a indication that the "golf" is going mid-engine too!

sorry folks just being silly.... not another platform share "niche"!!

The should have gone with the R4/KTM roadster idea they had quite a while ago. It looked, too.

That could have been fun.

Whoa, 2013? thats a long way away. At least it gives me more time to like this version.

If it is gonna be mid engined like the R8, name it the R6. or R4 if it has a 4cyl engine.

Good idea, TT is an okay name, but R4 would be more suitable(or R6 if it has a VR6).

Which platform is this based off now then? I thought it was the latest Golf/A3/Leon platform?

@britboy: it's got its own platform now, mostly made of aluminium to keep the weight at a correct value.

It has the ASF (Audi Space Frame) layout

It is the same chassis as the MKV's, but they replaced the front portion of the chassis with aluminum to give better balance for having an iron block over the front wheels and the rear half of the car is steel to get better weight distribution. Anyways, it's like the ASF but it's not, just a very modified MKV platform.

VW is also working on a mid-engine sports car, so i would imagine this would use the same chassis. I like the Idea, it would make the car quite a good handler with the weight balance. Heres hoping.

I doubt that Porsche will allow this...
