The compact SUV market is proving to be highly competitive these days, there are new models entering the market all the time as consumers scale down from the full size SUVs as oil prices increase. These facts mean Mercedes cannot afford to rest on their laurels, the all new GLK was unveiled in full production form at Auto China in April and this followed a long running PR campaign which included two pre-production GLK concepts – the Freeside and Townside.

The model range starts with the GLK 220 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY powered by a new entry level four-cylinder diesel engine producing 170 horsepower, for those looking for a bit more power and torque for your SUV the range is topped off by the GLK 350 featuring a 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine producing 272hp and 350Nm of torque.

Sales of the compact SUV commenced at the end of June with the launch of the Edition 1 model which features 20 inch wheels, EASY-PACK tailgate, privacy glass, interior sports package with black-white nappa leather from the disigno range, AMG leather steering wheel, black roof lining, aluminum trim and COMAND APS system.

Press Release (Click to expand)

Following its world premiere at Auto China in April 2008, the Mercedes-Benz GLK is being unveiled in its natural habitat for the first time. Boasting a body that is as practical as it is arrestingly succinct, an exceptional power spectrum and a bold personality, the new arrival has what it takes to redefine standards in the compact SUV class over all manner of route profiles – both on and off the road.

Brimming with genuine character, the new GLK-Class is set to take the world of compact SUVs by storm. Yet it is not just the distinctive all-rounder's practical and appealingly compact body form that sets it apart from the competition. It also brings together what were previously seen as entirely contradictory attributes, with supreme driving dynamics and outstanding driving safety going hand in hand with exceptional ride comfort courtesy of the AGILITY CONTROL suspension. Meanwhile the variable 4MATIC all-wheel drive system joins forces with the latest electronic control systems to deliver consummate on-road performance and superb off-road proficiency. It is precisely this kind of combination that lends the GLK such immense appeal and warrants the inclusion in the model name of the "G", an allusion to the archetypal Mercedes off-roader. As Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Daimler AG Board of Management comments: "The GLK rounds off our tremendously successful SUV family, transferring characteristic Mercedes qualities such as refinement, dynamism and safety to a compact format in the process. This has now significantly raised the bar in this market segment."

Superlative performance comes courtesy of the powerful yet economical four and six-cylinder engines. The BlueEFFICIENCY model – the GLK 220 CDI – features the new entry-level four-cylinder diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz, which develops 125 kW/170 hp yet only consumes 6.9 litres of diesel per hundred kilometres. The highly robust body is key to the pioneering passive-safety setup, the extremely low noise levels, the exceptional degree of interior comfort – to produce that typical Mercedes feeling of wellbeing – and the high value retention. Furthermore, exemplary appointments and attractive equipment packages make the GLK stand out from the rest of the compact-SUV crowd. Plus, state-of-the-art systems – such as the leading-edge PRE-SAFE® safety concept and the Intelligent Light System (ILS) – are available in this market segment for the very first time.

Mercedes-Benz GLK Edition 1: attractive model to celebrate sales launch

The exclusive "Edition 1" model is being brought out to mark the sales launch of the GLK-Class. This particular variant, sure to be the subject of great demand, is based on the exterior design of the models with exterior sports package but also features 20-inch wheels, the electrically operated EASY-PACK tailgate and specially tinted privacy glass in the rear compartment. The interior is based on the interior sports package and has been upgraded to include further quality details, such as black/white nappa leather seats from the designo range, an AMG multifunction leather steering wheel, a black roof lining, aluminium trim elements and the COMAND APS system. The exclusive GLK models are available in calcite white in the basic version, although customers may specify any other paint finish. Engine-wise, the GLK Edition 1 can be combined with any of the V6 units.

Mercedes offers the widest range of SUVs

Mercedes-Benz offers the widest range of SUVs in the premium segment. The GLK, a compact SUV, is the latest addition to the successful family and the brand's fifth model series in this internationally growth-oriented market. The R-Class is the model series with the most variants, all of which impress with an outstanding level of long-distance comfort as well as the most generously proportioned and variable interiors of all the Mercedes SUVs, including up to seven seats. The most successful Mercedes-Benz Sports Utility Vehicle, with around 950,000 vehicles sold to date, is the M-Class, offering an exciting balance between on-road performance and off-road ability. This model series, which celebrated its premiere some ten years ago, is seen as the precursor to all today's premium SUVs. The GL-Class has in turn occupied pole position in the SUV world since 2006. Its occupants travel first-class whatever the conditions, both on and off the road. The G-Class, which effectively started it all, is celebrating 30 years of service this coming year. The "G" really comes into its own when venturing off the beaten track and still ranks as one of the world's best off-roaders.

Bremen plant produces the GLK-Class on an exclusive basis

The GLK is being produced solely at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen, Germany. European customers can order the compact model with genuine character from June 30, 2008, with deliveries set to commence in October. The prices for the German market, not including local VAT, are as follows:

People'll buy it in bundles, but there is no escaping the fact that this is an ugly vehicle. Merc. seems that it lacks the talents when it comes to styling SUV's & 4X4's. a boring product in advance.

merc seems to lack talent when it comes to styling. The only semi attractive mb is the new sl65 amg black, and thats only because the whole body looks like a japanese tuner shop attacked it.

by joe_limon | July 16, 2008 11:08 PM
cheap copy of G-class styling.

by kimbo | July 16, 2008 11:15 PM
take it easy guys, everyone has their own opinion. i think it looks good. clean and crisp contemporary lines. im sure it looks even better in person.

by michelin901 | July 17, 2008 8:09 PM
sorry that wasnt meant for ya. but cmon g-class copy? tats wat manufacturers do! common elements. take a look at audis then

by michelin901 | July 17, 2008 8:14 PM
I mean it looks like a G-class a bit, because of that boxy styling.

Anyways making small SUV is hard, they're tall, short and not wide, so making that type of car is terrible expierence for any designer, but GLK is terrible!

It reminds me kind of a funny cartoon car that want to be G-class ahah

by kimbo | July 17, 2008 8:17 PM
ugly ugly ugly ..... ohhhhhhhh, it's hurt my eye.. what's goin on with mercedes design....

by bassam | July 17, 2008 12:39 AM
I agree with everyone so far ... Merc seem to have completely lost it in the design/style department you have to wonder if they are trying to cut costs by employing only trainees ... this model looks a lot like the old model Forester with just a side sculpture line added and a three pointed star replacing the Subaru emblem. ZERO marks out of 10 IMO

by daviepops | July 17, 2008 5:23 AM
i love this car! it is the one i would get... i really like the styling of it... i think that it is alot better than the Q5 and the X3

by BabyMilo | July 17, 2008 6:34 AM
it would be good to see it against the m-class to see the size.

by qwerty-acme | July 17, 2008 8:42 AM
I can't stand it BabyMilo?? How on earth can a clearly awful styling be LOVED? Do you understand what the word "LOVE" means? It means passion for things that please the eyes, ears, feelings, etc. at least the first one of which is existing from the start. BASSAM I really feel sorry for you and therefore advise you to shop elswhere since your are a real MEWRC. lover as I can figure out!

by SalimAl-Abri | July 17, 2008 9:42 AM
beauty is in the eye of the beholder

by st_efano | July 17, 2008 11:09 AM
I don't like the styling at first, but it grows on me. Now it is a beautiful car.

by st_efano | July 17, 2008 11:14 AM
Beautiful???

I think that's a tad over the top :-)

by Homerlovesbeer | July 17, 2008 11:31 AM
beautiful car...like the real boxy styling...dump the soft looking x3 and Q5...

by phobos | July 17, 2008 12:09 PM
It sucks. IMHO. Q5 is way better

by AmoKK | July 17, 2008 1:03 PM
AmoKK ... MHO is totally in agreement with YHO ... making a box look stylish can't be easy but the Q5 wins this three way contest hands down

by daviepops | July 17, 2008 6:21 PM
Boxi, metrosexual but nicely designed. Far better than for US market ower-monstered GL

by alessandro | July 17, 2008 9:04 PM
Relax. It will grow on you, just like an S-class in 2006.In the beginning every one sad it was ugly, now it's a good looking car. I sell this things and make no mistake we are ALL excited to see new GLK in person and by the way, when GLK220 CDI will hit the market next year at 21/32 mpg you will all agree, that it will be the #1 full efficient small luxury SUV on the market.

by ussoleg | July 18, 2008 5:26 PM
Its just a jazzed up Forester in Merc clothing. Same kind of proportions. Wheels even similar to MY08 Forester turbo....
