During the Formula One event at Hockenheim on July 19 and 20, BMW will be bringing back to life 10 BMW M1 racecars from the BMW M1 Procar series for the last time.

The idea of the BMW single-make race series was first conceived 30 years ago by Jochen Neerpasch, the head of BMW Motorsport GmbH at the time. With the first of its two seasons in 1979, the series was put into action within the structure of F1 by well known names such as Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley.

A handful of past M1 masters are set to line up once again for the two show races at Hockenheim. F1 commentator Marc Surer will be joined by Jacques Laffite, Dieter Quester, Christian Danner, Harald Grohs and Prince Leopold of Bavaria. Jochen Neerpasch will also be there, at the wheel of the BMW M1 turned into an Art Car by Andy Warhol. His co-driver will be none other than Frank Stella, creator of the BMW 3.0 CSL Art Car which raced at Le Mans in 1976. The 72-year-old remains a keen motor racing fan.

30 years on and they still look sensational ... dare I say better than many of today's "wanna be" supercars ... the ability to retain a modern look over decades is quite rare and a great tribute to the original design

Nice. You got to hand it to BMW. They aren't just marketing hype. I'll take one in every colour.
