This isn't the first time we've seen a mystery AMG model hiding under a sheet, however, this time it's not much of a mystery. We've been looking at the spy photos and videos for the past year, and finally the SL 65 AMG Black Series is ready to debut next month at the Formula One German Grand Prix.

In addition to the SLK 55 and CLK 63, the SL 65 will be the third model added to the ultra exclusive Black Series. Combining racecar performance with a street legal road car, the SL 65 transgresses from domesticated sportsman to a ravaging beast.

Transformation towards Black Series will see a boost in performance of the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 up to 680hp – that's 76hp more than the standard SL 65 AMG Roadster and 30hp more than the Mercedes-McLaren SLR 722. According to Autoweek, an insider close to the development stated that engineers could have easily extracted 720hp out of this engine without any major modifications but decided to cap it.

The body gets trimmed down with the use of carbon fiber hood, fenders and roof which is fixed to the body. Removing the foldable roof and all of its associated hardware alleviates much dead weight and improves structural rigidity.

Capable of 220 mph but electronically limited to 186 mph (300 km/h), 0-60 mph should arrives in less than 4.0 seconds.

Only 350 units will be sold worldwide with deliveries commencing in 2009.

by _M7_ | June 20, 2008 3:52 PM
well u read the article and u took the time to comment..I don't do that on News I don't care about :)

by Pentium | June 21, 2008 4:37 AM
M7, Thank you, I wouldn't know. Now we all have only one problem to solve: What we do with that hardly accessible amount of knowledge.

by alessandro | June 21, 2008 9:20 PM
Its a merc... Thats why i DO care

im so excited ahhhh i wonder what it is!

If only they turned the F-400 Carving Concept into a real car, I would guarentee you I would do whatever it takes to own that car :(

by MattAAron | June 20, 2008 4:07 PM
Can't wait!!!

by 3Iceman | June 20, 2008 5:33 PM
I'm sure this will be a really great car, but my main problem with it is that for the same money you could probably get a Ferrari F430 or a Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4. I think you would have to be a real Mercedes fan to want this car over the other two.

by xenomorph | June 20, 2008 6:37 PM
It is going to be much much more than Gallardo in price, that's for sure! CLK63 AMG did cost +50% more than a normal one. Now add 50% of price to the regular SL65 AMG price tag! You could have Gallard and an Aston for that sort of money, that's sick!

by kimbo | June 20, 2008 6:58 PM
You guys talk about for the money you could get an aston, Lambo, Ferrari, etc.... These guys that buy this car probably has all of those. People with money that can afford this car don't contemplate or cross shop with other brands. They already have those in their collections. Only people that can't afford them, will ponder that thought. Hope that helps!

by ferrariguy | June 20, 2008 11:37 PM
ferrariguy: you're right. Most people want this special Mercedes, because they love the brand, so it's going to be their fifth Merc, and apart from that they probably have some Ferrari's.

But I know a guy who has CLK Black Series as his second car. It really is not worth the money when you compare it to the standard CLK63, it is 50% more! Love this car but wouldnt buy it for that sort of money!

Black series is a series for brand lovers, that's it.

by kimbo | June 21, 2008 1:53 PM
The regular SL65 is overpriced, this is just outrageous. However, I'm interested to see how these models perform without the electronic trickery of Active Body Control. Handling & road feel should be pure, but interesting.

by benz_man | June 20, 2008 7:17 PM
i reckon it's the black series. look at the silhouette. the wheel arches are huge!

M7, I don't care either about a BMW, even A C55 could wrip any BMW, so I don't know why Mercedes are making this monster to decompose BMW, WHAT do exactly you mean 'its just a merc', BMW are the biggest joke ever known to man, who have completely forgot their past never try to mess with the masters - Mercedes-benz, if you do you'll regret OK!!! AND EVERYONE FACE IT NO ONE HAS MADE SUCH A CAR AS THIS,NOT FERRARI, NOT LAMBORGHINI, SO I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU LOT ARE SO WORRIED ABOUT THE HIGH PRICING....

by mercrules | June 21, 2008 2:23 PM
FERRARI 599 GTB FIORANO GOES 0-100 IN 3.5 SECONDS. MUCH QUICKER THAN THE MERC. AND JUST YOU WAIT TILL THE M1( or M10) ARRIVES!! REVENTON'S MUCH QUICKER TOO!!! So there!!!!!

by GranTurismo | June 21, 2008 3:09 PM
I love Mercs, but dont you dare criticize Ferrari, Lamborghini or BMW!!!!

by GranTurismo | June 21, 2008 3:18 PM
Actually it looks pretty close to those recent spy shots those were viewed in here specially tht the cover shows the widness of the car which proves the widebody kits which is available from AMG only on the 65's hope tht we c it soooon (Y) after the briliant SL63

by Cabbo | June 21, 2008 3:58 PM
I like Mercedes..but I don't hate BMW! come on...don't just talk nonsense...have u driven an M5/M6? tested it how it feels on the track? BMW engines are great...and u can check Engine of the Year...most won by BMW...

I just can't hate Mercedes and sure thing I just can't hate BMW!

by Pentium | June 21, 2008 8:47 PM
you know the Mclaren F1 had a BMW engine right...630hp?

by greenacre | June 22, 2008 4:56 AM
hahaha, Mercs are old man/lady cars. Who cares if a couple of them have a lot of hp. They still use automatic transmissions and weigh 2 tons. And don't even get me started on the ultra conservative styling.

by joe_limon | June 23, 2008 6:30 PM
joe_l.. you do know that something like 80% of Lamborghini Gallardo drivers go for the E-Gear transmission, yeah? Mercs are for old men, Ferraris are for footballers and other rich chavs, BMWs are for tossers... That's what people say about all of them, what's your point? This car looks the nuts and should be really good, especially considering the CLK63B was apparently awesome. :D

by ubizzle | June 25, 2008 11:47 PM
It just looks just like that cloth-beemer. But wrapping is different as we see.

by alessandro | June 21, 2008 9:05 PM
I thought this sort of stuff was Brabus' turf.

by Airbag | June 23, 2008 9:49 PM
BMW made the engine for the McLaren F1 how long ago? and since then what supercars have they made? Infact BMW only ever made the M1 and these days what do they have to compete with the SL? Or Lamborghini/Ferrari, they are a saloon and SUV maker... too limited. They need that M1 revival to really compete at this level

by joelynn | June 24, 2008 1:47 AM
yyeeeesss, niiiccccee. but why is it called 65 if it has 6.0 l engine. this will go on and on....66, 67, 68..... i think to 666 damned to hell and it will still have a 6.0 l. just like those C/E class engines. 200, 220...250...etc, but it it a 2.0 l, and they just fidled with the kompressor to have more bhp. this is so lame for a hundred euro vehicle. god damn it mercedes...

by norther | June 24, 2008 1:57 AM
do want to have a competition about who's got the highest HP because I will wrip your ass, theres no point evenb going their, well FOR STARTERS I could tell you about the Mercedes-benz powered lotec producing 1300hp, or the Zonda, what are you trying to prove??, once again comparing c***** BMW to the masters Mercedes-benz, what a bunch offools..Mercedes-benz and their team look at people like you in their office and laugh their heads off, at least you do something good by making people laugh!!!

by mercrules | June 24, 2008 11:56 AM
pfft thats nothing compared to the 1500hp lingenfelter corvette, 2000hp twin turbo vipers, and other super boosted american muscle cars.

by joe_limon | June 25, 2008 5:48 AM
joe_limon is right..altho i would take every single BMW over any MB -save for the SLR/black series cars- this car is gonna be a monster.the SL is overpriced and heavy but this sl black series is gonna devastate everything.its a monster.

by bernardo | June 26, 2008 12:03 AM
Its the king of all cars , u like it or not

by anasbat | June 30, 2008 4:07 PM
cars = just toys. Getting emotional and allowing a car to define who you are is what gives the marketing department its job. Bravo!
