The serious business has begun for the development of the new Saab 9-4X after it was caught entering the Nurburgring circuit in Germany by the good folks at Bridgetogantry.com presumably to do a bit of high speed testing on the new SUV.

The base for the new model will be General Motors' mid-size SUV Theta platform which is currently used for the Saturn Vue and Opel Antara, but it will be heavily revised to a more premium level and will be shared with the Cadillac BRX/SRX.

Sources have claimed this particular prototype has a 284 horsepower V6 engine under the hood mated to an automatic gear box. The dimensions of the model stand at a length 495cm and 192cm wide bringing an estimated kerb weight to around 2180kg.

Styling follows the same theme as the 9-4X BioPower Concept with the aggressive half oval grille remaining intact, but obviously the overall profile of the vehicle had to be heavily toned down for production.

It should makes its world debut at next year's Detroit Motor Show before production commences at the GM factory in Mexico.

The raping and pillaging of SAABs heritage is almost complete. GM actually deserves to go down, although I hope someone will spin off Corvette before they do.

Agree. Nothing left but uglyness of wicked motives.

they really should have directed more resources to the new 9-5 than this, the styling is terrible and the interior doesnt look like that much of a giant leap forward, they should make the same realisation that jag did that they needed to break from the same interior and exterior style of the last fifty years and take a bold new direction. instead they have gone for boring crap ripping off oher manufacturers in a saab style, such a shame..........such a shame. bmw are interested in aking over volvo, but they would probably be better off buying saab for nothing and using there badge instead as a secondary luxury range.

Saab is an oportunity indeed, like a gifted person in lost. Yet Renault is about Volvo too. But both, BMW and Renault can make it better than the GM. Inside of the BMW AG will Saab live, no doubt, as well as Volvo will I belive.

2180kg is very much for a v6-engined midsize SUV. Is that the future? To sell allroundcars as 2,5tonner?
