As of 2009 Opel will introduce a new “Opel Eye” technology which will read signs warning drivers of the speed limit as well as track their driving line and warn if the car is veering out of their lane.

The new technology was jointly developed between Opel and GM engineers in Rüsselsheim in conjunction with specialists Hella, the Opel-Eye camera is just a little bigger than your average mobile phone but has the ability top take up to 30 pictures a second. These pictures are then processed by a proprietary GM software package which filters and reads the photos before instantly returing the information to the driver. The technology can read signs as far as 100 meters away by identifying the circular patterns and the numbers inside them.

The Opel Insignia will be the first vehicle to incorporate the new technology when the Opel-eye first becomes available early next year. Read the press release below for a more in detail look.

The first car cops will hate "No officer I wasn't speeding the car won't let me to" :) Maybe they should make it to read licence plates so you can find out where that hot girl lives that drives in front of you:) Just a suggestion.

That'd then be the follow-you-home device, as available with the follow-me-home headlights. :D
