Porsche May Develop New Golf-Sized Entry Level Car

Hot hatch is expected for 2012

Relations between Porsche and Volkswagen are getting increasingly closer since the companies decided to create Touareg and Cayenne, which share the same platform and some mechanical components. Whether Porsche ever manages to control Volkswagen, what seem to be getting closer, since Germany is being taken to court over Volkswagen Law, the fact is Wolfsburg could easily give Stuttgart an entry level model. The candidate, according to the German magazine AutoBild, will be sixth generation Golf, which may share its platform with a new model from Porsche.

The new car, expected to be presented in 2012, will be able to defy BMW 1-Series, Audi A3 and the new generation of Mercedes-Benz entry-level cars, said to be more performance oriented. Would that be a bad idea for Porsche? Not if you consider BMW has been exploring cheaper segments with success, with 1-Series and Mini. Audi is already preparing A1 to enter the same car segment explored by Mini, while Alfa Romeo has recently presented Mi.To. Therefore, why should Porsche be out of this new and promising luxury niche? When we remember BMW has been considering bringing back the Isetta, maybe all premium brands should be already thinking the same way.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!! NO NO PLEASE PLEASE PORSCHE DONT DO THAT !!! please stick to ur sports cars !! its already tricky enough maintaining the Porsche image as it is with the Panamera coming up. Porsche was always a SPORTS CAR !! and it was ok with the Cayenne and i guess it will be ok with the Panamera, but it will NOT be OK with a silly little porsche hatchback !! that will ruin everything !!

by Mohameds7s | June 8, 2008 10:32 PM
i kinda agree with you but aparently porsche are trying to expand their brand...

by BabyMilo | June 9, 2008 2:10 AM

by fatter1 | June 8, 2008 11:10 PM
Porsche knows they have to be in this segment to keep alive. Even Bentley and Bugatti are said to be working on cheaper models.

by thamzn | June 8, 2008 10:49 PM
If they want to build a cheaper car, then why dont they build something that slots right under Panamera.. that's the only way they should be going.

by FastLane | June 8, 2008 10:59 PM
Exactly!!! Otherwise they'll end up like Ferrari, under FIAT ownership(Yuck!!!).

by GranTurismo | June 9, 2008 5:50 AM
Why not? I think it's okay!

by Pentium | June 8, 2008 11:33 PM
wtF? hell noo, all this time i've been anticipitating that porsche is coming up with sth to beat the gt-r..but noooo..this is disappointing mang

by porschekrazii | June 9, 2008 2:29 AM
While people might not like this because of possibly bringing down the Prestige associated with Porsche by a bit. This however is not a stupid move...im not sure Porsche should make a car like this unless its at least as fast as a 135i(No Lower models) but if Porsche does in fact make one...the car is gonna sell like pancakes, it will make Porsche so much damn money.

by xanavi23 | June 9, 2008 2:31 AM
(Auto)Bild in D is like the Sun in the UK. I doubt that rumor. A few years back they also said, a SUV below the Cayenne, named Roxster, will enter the market soon and it won`t! Instead, the next cayenne will be lighter and less bulky. Autobild isn`t a very reliable source. it´s all about sensation and scandalous stuff.

by catchmyshadow | June 9, 2008 2:43 AM
Ditto.

by NaBUru38 | June 9, 2008 7:47 PM
the fact that BMW, Audi and Merc have entry level cars is somewhat irrelevant. Porsche is a supercar manufacturer and i think building a car like that will devalue their brand. i think the high-ups know this, and the only reason they would consider it is if they are bound by the new EU law stating that car manufacturers must average 130g/km CO2. without a car like this, Porsche may struggle to reach that target

by sub39h | June 9, 2008 3:22 AM
the Base Cayenne V6 is by no means a Supercar. Porsche used to be a performance sportscar company but not anymore(i LOVE Porsche; Honesty) however that changed with the introduction of the Cayenne Base Models.

by xanavi23 | June 9, 2008 4:24 AM
ok point taken. in my mind i don't count any of the Cayennes as supercars, and i don't think the Panamera will be one either. change "supercar" for "high end car". and something like a Golf isn't high end, irrespective of what badge is on the front.

by sub39h | June 9, 2008 3:06 PM
You guys say all these things how bad it will be for Porsche but in fact I think all of you want this to happen because it will be your first porsche you might afford :)

by out4ride | June 9, 2008 3:33 AM
hehehehehe XD! maybe u are right!

by Pentium | June 9, 2008 5:30 AM
Oh... that's a bit too good for a car company ignoring the reasons why they have been successful. I think you'll lose much of your interest on Porsche by 2012.

by samuelzeus | June 9, 2008 10:10 AM
I would seriously think of buying one for sure! Why not! :)

by catch22 | June 9, 2008 4:26 PM
please Porsche, go ahead with the project so that i can afford a porsche at 2012...:-)

by electra | June 9, 2008 5:44 AM
I used to think that I would work hard and save my money and i would one day be able to buy a mercedes SL and I did, now look at MB they have brought out so many new models and less expensive derivatives of my car, that I do not feel so fortunate and that the brand has been cheapened, Porsche take a page from MB, thats all I am saying

by Benzboy | June 9, 2008 7:32 AM
i think Porsche is doing well enough that they do not need to 'stay alive' by getting into this segment. apparently they are one of the most profitable manufacturers.

by M! | June 9, 2008 8:07 AM
I agree, they're well off financially.

The motivation may be something different then, though probably still about money.

by ceven | June 9, 2008 1:41 PM
this is rubbish. they've already stretched their product range by introducing the Cayenne and the upcoming Panamera. if this bit of news is true, then they'll be diluting their brand image even more. they don't need to compete in every single market segment to stay at the top!

by motoriety27 | June 9, 2008 9:39 AM
so... front wheel drive Porsche??? LOL

by RyanSlow | June 9, 2008 11:28 AM
Come on. BMW doesn't do FWD nowadays, so Porsche would the hell not.

by ceven | June 9, 2008 1:41 PM
very wrong move. if it happens, i will lose my faith in porsche. hope its not true.

by e36mmm | June 9, 2008 11:44 AM
so that'l be a audi TT with 911 front end, well i guess people get used to it!guess it is a better starting point than the ugliest SUV release of the last decade ..

by muellr | June 9, 2008 5:25 PM
I'm not convinced that making lots of money and keeping your company off the liquidation list devalues your brand. Many thought this would happen when the Cayenne was launched. The opposite did in fact, happen. 1 Series and A3 are premium cars and if Porsche can compete at 135i/ S3/ RS 3 level, then I see no issue with it. WCF has reported before about a smaller Veyron; everyone is downsizing because fuel price, CO2 emissions, price etc. We are to see smaller Bentleys and Rolls Royces soon too.

by thamzn | June 9, 2008 6:39 PM
Bad move, I think... Expand your brand doesn´t mean devalue it

by Paulds | June 9, 2008 7:00 PM
From a business point of view this makes good sense to enter the luxury compact market. Let's face it...alot of people want a Porsche in their drive way, but are restrained by the price tag or have no place in their lifestyle for a sports car or a SUV.

But in the long run it will only dilute the Porsche brand. Remember the Porsche 924 didn't do too much to enhance the Porsche brand back in the 80's....but it sure did bring a lot of people to the dealerships that otherwise would not have even dreamed of coming into a Porsche dealership.

by schizo0223 | June 9, 2008 8:24 PM
Porsche wont do this.. this article is BS yeah just like we were going to build a baby cayenne.. NOT!! dont sweat it guys we're not doing it..

by pt_porsche | June 9, 2008 9:32 PM
Why should Porsche attack the BMW 1-Serie or the Audi A3, while they do not have a alternative to bmw 3-Serie, 5-Serie, A4, A6?

by RS77 | June 9, 2008 9:47 PM
So what about Cayman, is it not a Porsche?

by alessandro | June 9, 2008 10:55 PM
I don't understand Porsche. The way they made their money, to buy more and more of Volkswagen, was by making and keeping their cars exclusive. In other words, they weren't making cars for all markets, only a few. The only bit I can understand is how they feel the "need" to expand to put more money into the pockets of shareholders. But boys, this is too much. The Cayenne was enough (too much, more like it), and you're only hurting yourselves by bringing down the exclusivity and desirability of your marque.

by carolinaluvr101 | June 10, 2008 12:40 AM
First,

The Old Porsche 356 was based on the VW Beetle

Now The porsche 914 was... mmmm based on an improved vw beetle platform, sharing components with the VW Beetle

Now, the Mercedes E-500 and the Audi RS2, where tuned and developed by porsche

also the tiptronic transmision wich was standard on most VW, Audi, and even Peugeot Models

The VW's DSG was a porsche Idea, they named it PDK and it was the dual clutch semi-automatic racing transmision of the succesful 962 Le Mans Winner and the Audi Quattro Rallie Car

So with The Porsche Cayene, the mercedes E 500, the Audi RS2, an the old 914, porsche has had a sport car in almost every market range, the only thing that porsche doestn't need is a minivan [rember the varrera test mule? based on a VW saharan?] and a Pick UP.

Now a sirocco based porsche, with porsche brakes, PDK tranny and porsche tuned suspension, would be nice and a killer alternative over a 135i

It has to have some of the following

Tuned Porsche Suspension PDK 7 Speed transmision, [Next Generation DSG] A6 platform based [VW Sirocco/VW Golf MKVI] Turbo FSI Engine, from the TTS, tuned for 300 HP All Wheel Drive Haldex System Light weight No ceramic Brakes, but PASM, Porsche's Active Suspension, similar to Audi's Magnetic Ride

Now that would be an affordable supercar.

Most of this tech is already availible on the Audi TT, that is wahy a Golf Based Porsche, isn't a bad idea...

And Please, don't do the 997 fascia on a Golf GTI front, the cayenne is ugly as hell

by tohui | June 10, 2008 2:03 AM
that are great facts to think about it. Better whould be a rearwheeldriven-compact like the bmw 1 and why no boxerengines from Porsche? a coupétype like scirocco whould be a nice form for a compact porsche. And all guys who think, that Porsche will lose the sportimage: before the first 356 was made, Porsche developed the VW Beetle/Käfer, where his first sportcars based on. And therefor Porsche made bolldogs... think about interesting concepts beneeth the 911

by xlumino | June 11, 2008 5:02 PM
I think this is a good idea, if done correctly. It could be very undesirable if it is a warmed over VW. My vision is a 4 cylinder boxer in the front driving the rear wheels. An optional package with the Cayman S motor wand 4WD would make a great WRX beater in the rally world.

Make a coupe, a 2+2 with small rear hinged doors and a shooting brake.

The world is changing quickly and the supercars and Cayenne type vehicles aren't going to remain as strong in sales as they are now. This may happen by next week. I desire a Cayman but I live in a long winter place (like many other people who can afford a premium car). Stretching to buy a car of this price that I could drive less than half of the year makes it a non-starter.

by V6s_stink | June 10, 2008 3:33 AM
Winters in my home are same long. The idea of yours is very close to be only real ticket to future for Porsche. I like it too.

by alessandro | June 13, 2008 7:09 PM
It may be a good idea, after all, but it should - as some already said - be really well executed.

It'll indeed have to have enough power reserves to be distinctive enough. At least it'd be a Porsche.

by ceven | June 10, 2008 10:53 AM
What?? I thought Porsche competes with Ferrari's and Lambos...by making this model, they are downgrading their brand image

by kevoluetion | June 12, 2008 8:19 AM
Porsche is hardly beating MB and BMW in SUV sector and they would not do it in "entry level premium section" too. Amazing but now, 60 years later Porsche, best super car builder ever, discovered himself in a state of searching for better place in European car industry.

by alessandro | June 13, 2008 6:59 PM
Another disappointing movement by Porsche!!....wake up guys u r not volkswagen!

by tthanos | June 14, 2008 1:39 AM
What is next on? Rols-Royce fantom mpv!

by mhamini | June 16, 2008 2:58 AM
betcha seven hundred to one , this rig shares the same platform as the VW Zerocco .
