Citroen Eyes DTM Debut in 2010
Citroen Sport boss Olivier Quesnel has hinted at a possible WRC withdrawal for his French team if things don’t improve drastically over at WRC. Quesnel was referring to the fact that he thinks WRC is not promoted as well as the DTM series, with which he was extremely impressed.
"I went to Hockenheim,” he said, “to look at the DTM race and the promotion of that series is on another planet compared to the WRC.
"Citroen gave me the budget and I have to use it in the best possible way. We have a new car, the C5, which is in the market with the Audi A4 and the Mercedes C-class, so we have to look at things."
Quesnel reckons DTM gives automakers much better value for money than WRC as far as marketing and selling their cars goes. Beyond 2009 the Citroen participation in WRC is up in the air. Quesnel may have a point. Motorsports that are promoted much better than others include F1, NASCAR and DTM, as well as Dakar Series and Le Mans. WRC is seen as a sort of paradox; a series where lots of off-road driving takes place, and yet vehicles used are not off-road SUVs, with the result that often customers get confused by saloon 4WD cars that they themselves can’t drive on the same tracks as the likes of Sebastian Loeb.
Speaking of Loeb, Citroen has to consider the career of their ultra-successful driver, whose contract is up at the end of the 2009 season.
"If we are quite sure the WRC is a good idea then we can make the investment in the new car," said Quesnel. "But we are not here to race for the sake of the race. We are here to sell cars.
"I was happy to be in Jordan, but where were the spectators? We don't sell enough cars there - we need to be in China. If there is no promotion in WRC, it doesn't matter that the costs are becoming less and less."
Excellent, DTM needs a 3rd and 4th if possible manufacturer, i like DTM alot but it needs some fresh blood.
they r not winning in WRC...not selling enought cars...BECAUSE THEY R RUBBISH...the make rubish rally cars, c'z their base cars r rubish...people r confused c'z what u race has not even a single similar bolt in mass production ones...suburu and mitsu make rally cars then base their pruduction ones on them...i bet even if they go to DTM they will not win...
Its just Citroen eyeing up German automakers in a way only a guy who has lip gloss in his handbag could understand. its the whole marketing philosophy behind the C5 thing again like their ads. But I do think it would be a smart move, and you never know if Loeb wants a change from the dirt and mud of the WRC to DTM's tarmac
i thought that DTM was German cars only, its like i don't know nascar in a way because everyone racing is racing american cars, that's including Toyota because it is Toyota of America, you know.
DTM is not only about german manufacturers. proof is the fact that Alfa was present in DTM during the best half of the 90's. I think this is the best touring car championship in the world (way over the WTCC) and some new constructors would be welcome. Citroën is good, but a name like BMW or Ford would be even better.
Sorry - If you actually watched WRC for the last 3or 4 years you would have know that Citroen has won it - I might have missed something as i suppose winning is not good but RUBBISH instead??
True, Citroen is to WRC as Ferrari is to Formula-One.
more brands for DTM!! But for this series, it might be the new C5

True words indeed as far as marketing goes.
Except for Subaru and Suzuki - Citroen does not habe a 4X4 C4, neither does Ford have a 4X4 Focus. Why compete and try and sell vehicles if you dont have a similar road vehicle to offer to the general public
