Mercedes E-Class Spied Again

Expected late 2009

It may still be well over a year until we know for sure what the next generation Mercedes E-Class will look like. But today, our spy photographer has taken pictures of a prototype of the codenamed W212 project close to Mercedes' test base at the Nurburgring.

For the 2010 model year the Mercedes E-Class is likely to drop its Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) in favour of a conventional brake system with high-tech features such as wet-weather disc wiping and wheel-selective cornering brake control. Top of the range models such as the AMG series may have optional ceramic-composite brakes.

The new E-class design will mimic the S-class' wheel-arch extensions, rising character line below the door handles and big bumpers. Other features will include a more sculpted wide-frame grille and geometric air intakes in the front fascia. Some say the front headlights and c-pillar treatment is heavily influenced by the latest Lexus models, which is rather ironic since Lexus was famous for 'borrowing' design cues from Mercedes in the past. We expect that the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show will reveal all.

Driver safety will be a major theme on the E-Class with lane-departure warnings, eye-movement monitor, traffic sign identification, road condition sensors and stability control for crosswinds, camber changes and tire wear.

We expect no surprises in regards to the engine options, ranging from a 184 hp 4-cylinder to the usual V6 and V8 engines and the range-topping E63 AMG 6.3 liter V8 producing 500-plus horsepower.

Doesn't look as sleek as the last one

given the trend of latest Mercedes models i think that this one will look just about right. Still it almost impossible to pinpoint the exact design underneath. But look at S-klasse and c-klasse and rejoice, Mercedes is back more beautiful and better built

can anyone give me a glimpse look of the interior?...i have seen too many rendered picture of the exterior, what about the interior?

by phobos | April 8, 2008 4:23 PM
It looks more like an enlarged C-class.

by AG4 | April 8, 2008 3:17 PM
Yeah, basically a big C-class with even edgier dashboard. Avantgarde versions should be nice.

looking good. seems merc has caught onto the led driving lights seen on audi's and porsche's. i do concur with mercedes when they have said that the new more angular design laguage is to bring back mercedes reputaion for build quality. the new design language definately looks more robust and solid compared to the previously curvy one (in my own perception)

by worldcarfan87 | April 8, 2008 4:44 PM
Yeah, I agree.

by wjaprep | April 8, 2008 9:56 PM
what does design language have to do with quality?

by benz_man | April 9, 2008 7:56 AM
um just noticed.. could be those the first anti-fog leds on the market? lol

by ck314 | April 8, 2008 5:19 PM
those are regular lights covered by camouflage with holes in it. look closely

by m555david | April 8, 2008 4:24 PM
not sure, i noticed those uneven perforations but still, its a sharp blue light, not the white-yellowish usual beam from foglamps

mercedes doesn't like to be second ever, if anything it might be one solid led light. but if you look closely on the right of the vehicle then you will noticed that they have punched one to many holes, and lights is visible from under the line. To me it is just another indication of one solid LED...but again Mercedes might just playing with us and might throw a surprise at the premiere...

then again i have looked at the design and in my head i have removed all of the black foreskin off this baby. and design becomes very obvious. Even the headlights are clear. only back lights are confusing.

The available BMW 5-series is much more better what about the next one!!! BMW for life :D:D

The only thing that I would really add to this car in the one windsheild wiper like on the w210 and w124

by wjaprep | April 8, 2008 10:05 PM
the front light cluster looks like a mix of the freshened Sl and the current 5 series..or in other words odd just like the extended wheelwell on the rear with the straight line towards teh rearlights. Where did merc bury the elegance of the W 126 s class?

by muellr | April 8, 2008 10:26 PM
in the cls' ocean deep sensuality?

by ck314 | April 9, 2008 12:29 AM
this is just an enlarged c class but with the head lights off the new sl...

correct me if I'm wrong. 2007 and up models dont have sbc anymore. I thought they were problematic when they introduced them

by unknown | April 8, 2008 11:42 PM
ye i remmember s class in a comouflage looked so much worse , we'll see we'll see

by dolcegabbana | April 9, 2008 4:05 AM
Is it coming in 2009 or 2010?

by schefar | April 9, 2008 2:19 PM
According to the article, its expected to make it debut late 2009 for the 2010 model year.

by AG4 | April 10, 2008 12:12 AM
Rubbish! This car can never ever be measured to a 5 Series
