Audi RS 8 Gets Turbo V10 with 572 bhp
Audi is not playing “nice” with its two main German rivals anymore. In fact, Ingolstadt is preparing an arsenal so powerful that some may even start accusing Germany of another world war. Of course this is in the motor arena where “wars” are fought in friendly territories like engines and powertrains, race tracks and cup holders. And so it will be when the new R8 V10 – Audi says it can’t be called RS8 because that might confuse it with a high-performance A8 which may or may not happen – debuts with its 5.2-litre V10. Of course we’ve known all along this was the type of equipment to be fitted, but what we initially didn’t realize was that Audi would take the bull by its sharpest thorns and go turbo on us with this! Yep folks, R8 V10 will debut next year with the same firepower handed to the RS 6. In essence we are talking about 572 wild German horses confined only by ten cylinders, translating to a sub 4.0 second time on the 0 – 100km/h flight, with a cruise limiter of 200 mph.
Audi has been denying all of this turbo talk, even when questioned about the test mule that infamously caught fire at Nordscheife last year, saying the engine could easily provide the required horses, but cooling it would be the main bone of contention. Now ladies and gentlemen, that bone has been chewed and spat and V10 twin-turbo is a go. Speaking to Autocar head of Audi powertrain development Wolfgang Hatz said: “The car is now signed off, and will appear during the second quarter of 2009. I can’t say much about it until then. The cooling is no problem now.”
VW Group’s greatest cooling problem on a road car so far has been Bugatti Veyron, but they managed ok there and learnt some cooling lessons along the way. The cooling system has also helped in V12 TDI prototype, a system that provides up to 20 percent more cold air into the radiators and a roof air vent that works with the turbos.
“Why would we spend money developing a whole new engine for this car, when we already have such a good one?”
A wonderful question.
In a separate development it seems the upcoming 2.5-litre 340 bhp TT RS will not be labeled as such. According to our source, only Porsche can use the moniker RS as suffix (one that comes after another word) in the VW Group. Audi can use it, but only as prefix, meaning in front of something else, like RS 6 or RS 4 etc. Wow, family feuds!
The most powerful diesel engine in a production car ^^
will the weight of the car increase??? should have made a twin turbo V8... lighter in weight and they could have had more balance?? i think the V8 is the best balanced engine... dunno though thats what i've heard correct me if i'm wrong nontheless... kick a$$ car :)
i cant be certain but i think that might have something to do w. fuel efficiency thats why they prob didnt put a twin turbos on a v8
60 degree V-12s are naturaly balanced, through second-order vibrations.
the link to autocar.co.uk is dead... it seems to be an april joke.
Finally , they did it . WOOOOOOOOOOW !!
I believe it's a joke. and not bad one. But this one: "some may even start accusing Germany of another world war", Mr. Thami Masemola, is a bad taste joke.
I agree, it is not funny, because it doesn't make sense. They'd be accused of starting a civil war since it is between German rivals. ^-^
lol yeah i was thinking that! and "..Audi would take the bull by its sharpest thorns..." hahahah err.. he meant horns right!?
actually radmeister if you read it you would see that it says that its gonna be a V10 almost everywhereon the page

I wouldn't say this is an April fools joke... This one is the joke: http://www.worldcarfans.com/9080401.003/kia-kee_wii-concept-revealed
A huge engine and just 4s ??? what a waste of engineering, learn from nissan a little :S. That V10 is not diesel, the V12 is...still too much engine for low power and torque
I know someone who has preorderd two of these, hes minted, but still will make a nice bit by selling em
Why would one Turbo charge an already big engine and only just manage to beat a heavier and natural aspirated smaller engined RS4 by a mere 1 second? Sub 3 seconds should be the target as someone has already mentioned the Nissan GTR achieves 3.8 seconds 0 - 100 witha turbo V6. This must have been an April fools joke.
The thing I still haven't been able to grasp is why they put the same engine in the 4 door RS 4. And then made this car not even 200 lbs lighter then the RS 4. And they somehow are asking twice the price? Normally I hate 4 door cars, but ignoring the price and going purely on looks and performance, I would have a very hard time choosing between either of these cars. I mean the R8 has a slight edge when it comes to performance... but the rs4 looks so much nicer. Oh well, I guess that's why they are releasing newer more expensive versions of this car with bigger engines. Come to think of it, the tt rs would fit in exactly for the kind of car I am going to be looking for once I graduate. Performance, looks, 2 doors, and hella cheaper then the r8 and all of its performance versions.
hmm... dunno why I added that comment onto yours Wisp.
Forget your 0-62 figures guys, there meaningless in the terms of cars like this. Its more like your 70-150mph which this car would excel at over the RS4.
Don't forget the turbos increase efficiency exponentially (CAFE). And, the V10's in the middle of the Rs8 instead of hanging over the front axle centerline like in the RS4. Think of how neutral and blissful handling will be...
The R8 is only a "base" model. And besides, Audis were never famous for ultra performance super cars, this is just the start.
THERE IS A GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! This car is absolutely amazing!
i know someone who has preorderd two of these for profitering reasons
i have a bmw m6 and the r8 with the 420hp is close to me very well i think that r8 with v10 and v12 is the best cars ever made from audi!
what would be wrong with calling this the R10 as it now has 10 cylinders? and the Audi RSTT?
no no nnnnooo....whhyyy? it should've been 600, not 572. wtttfff? it is a supercar, not a super saloon. they could've tuned the turbos jus a little bbbit to achieve 600bhp. why didn't they, why? god damn it im sad, im splitting my veins open. i hate audi right now, i really do. i was so sure the best r8 wil have 600 bhp. i just dont get it, they have the tech, they have the money they have everything...i understand aston reducing the v12 vantage to 550 (maybe somewhere they had a good reason)...but why audi, whhhhyyyy!?!?!?
Maybe they wanted reliability over that extra 28hp. Don't worry, there will be tuning companies that will push it over.
Hi Norther.... dont worry about not getting the 600 horsies..... i think there are enough of them
apparently it is probably going to be called r10

Wow, now we are talking, it was already an amazing car now it is just orgasmic.
