Will BMW re-invent the Isetta?
BMW CEO, Norbert Reithofer, has recently announced that the Bavarian auto maker is about to develop an all new small city car designed for use in big cities like New York, Tokyo, Rio or other overpopulated areas where big cars are a nuisance. The decision was influenced by new CAFE emission standards which take effect in 2012. Consequenty, BMW will be classified as a "large vehicle manufactuer," and subject to higher efficiency standards.
Since this new city car will be considerably smaller than BMW’s current smallest model, the 1-Series, the old Isetta legend from the 50s comes to mind. The little city hopper is not expected to adapt the unusual front end access door from the original Isetta, but an electric engine will get power from a lithium-ion battery which is expected to provide sufficient power assuming development of the technology progresses at a presumed rate. Similar to the Smart model, it will offer room for two passengers plus luggage, and it can be expected that BMW will create an all new brand name and model line for this car.
Since nobody knows how the new little car will look like once it comes on the market, these two speculative computer renderings are an artist’s impression of what it could be like.
Looks like it still has the Smart stock rims on it. The logo could be guessed looking at the 2nd picture.
The back is O.K. imho, but the front would be awfully strange for a BMW. And with its flame surfacing looks it gives the impression of a toy car.
Try a different approach... I usually like the Lehmann stuff.
I think those might be the Brabus wheels for the Smart car.
if this car is sold as bmw, will it have rwd just like all other bmw cars?
Isetta looks very unique for sure and I can only say so because it was back 50s and 60s. If you like recent BMW's design trend, this body design shall look hideous as hell. I would sell it with a different name and badge to compete with Tata in India.
lol photoschop. Looks like someone didn't like all the nasty comments about the nano bmw photochop.
make it rwd so it can compete directly with the smart.
i think i would pass it as more like an alfa then a bmw they lights are def. alfa.. i think if bmw were to do it it will under that new company they are about to start! i think idk i heard it somewhere!
instead of launching a pseudo isetta which never will reach the uniqueness and the beauty of the original, bmw could make the big mini smaller and lighter ? and more affordable.
lets hope for 2 things here, one that the lehmann renderings are way off the real thing and the other that Bemmer is more sucessfull with their city idea than with the C1 roofed scooter they stopped producing a couple years ago, despite the fact that ist was legal to ride without helmet, for europe that was unusual.
that is juts ugly!! who would want to buy that!?! thy should make it look abit more like a car and a little less like a lancia
Istill say Steven Q. Urkel had the hottest Isetta!!LOL
It DOES look like jaja binks on wheels!
sure thing it's a smart based photo shop and it's ugly!

Surely the Mini brand could adequately cover this end of the market? As I have said before, the Mini Spiritual concept was just this kind of car.
