New Audi S4 Spied in Northern Sweden

2009 Audi S4 skating on ice

Audi is testing the new S4 based on its new A4 shape, as evidenced by our pictures taken in cold northern Sweden. The four double tailpipes are typically latter-day Audi S, compared to the RS models whose signature huff pipes are oval and only add up to two.

Grille is different from the standard car with its off-colour surrounded by chrome. And what is that extra hole to the bottom left of the front grille?

Word on power is the trusted revvy 4.2-litre V8 FSI of 354 bhp/ 264kW. We sincerely hope it isn’t, that it hikes power up to over 390 bhp. This would make more sense since the next RS 4 will probably hit the 500 bhp mark. Audi S4 will be offered in sedan and Avant for 2009.

is it or like its not as exciting seeing an audi hidden as much as u would be saying about a BMW ...for tis even if it said RS4 i would be like ehh i know what its gona look ..but when an some BMW M is spied i am like i am dying to see what its gona look like!! ...anyone feel that way?

i see what you're saying but because many people already know what the new a4 looks like there isn't really much to hide except for the front and rear bodykits and even then it's not much of a surprise the car looks great nonetheless

Nobody expected the Audi TT-S to have a new radical sporty bumper, no body expected Audi to release the R8 either. Audi never releases a finished model during testing, I think you can only determine it when they release the studio promo shots.

What is that extra hole to the bottom left of the front grille?

It is the adaptive cruise controll radar!

Desiathate: I definitely agree with you but it's probably just because I'm a BMW nut and generally prefer their cars. ;-) This will be a great car though, I can't wait to see it. Then there's always the RS...

I actually love seeing Audi spyshots because unlike all other car makers they tend to do their testing in deep secret. When BMW is testing, they test out in the open with bizare camo on, thats what makes them so interesting. I must say when its an "S" Audi then I am not so exiting to see them, but if its an "RS" Audi, then I pee my pants dying to see what it ends up like. I guess its all about what you like more, Audi or BMW. Both companies will have their fans, and I just prefer Audi over any BMW. Especially when it comes to RS vs ///M

i'm hopeful the hole in the front grill is a rocket launcher for people who won't get out of the fast lane.

good looking car though, i even like the lights on the roof.

That hole is Adaptive Cruise Control radar system.

The engine is already confirmend by Audi dealers: 3.0 TFSI with 333bhp (3.0 V6 FSI Valve-Lift with Twin Screw Four-Lobe (Twin Vortices Series) TVS Eaton Compressor

What's with the randomly angled, shapeless taillight design? BMW started it on the 3 sedan, and it's horrible, now Audi. Does any designer know what ugly means anymore? It used to be fun driving behind a new BMW or Audi, but not with rears this ugly... oh crap!

Same thought here, I think it's gonna be a V8 again, otherwise the difference between S4 and 3.2 FSI would be way too small, engine-wise.

Plus, you can get a 4.2 FSI V8 on the A6, so there's no certain point for me to put in a small mill.

CO2 emission is gonna be otherworldly enough, business as usual. :D

It's a done deal, but still Audi internal and not officially confirmend or published. Wether you believe it or not ... that's another story (anyway all your speculations will be wrong).

The 3.0 TFSI is the Audi answer to the BMW x35i biturbo engine, all who wait for V8 power: RS4 is coming...

I'm not saying they won't release that kind of engine in the short term (the 1.4TFSi proved to be sensational in the Golf), but to me it'd make more sense to name it A4 3.0 TFSi, not S4. If that were the case, why did they relase the V8 S5 then?

gobs3z
February 25, 2008 3:51:56 AM

He's right about the supercharged 3.0L, and the S5 is more of a GT car hence the V8. The S4 is in between a 335i and an M3. It will also supposedly have torque vectoring.

I promise you i can draw an RS4, S4, S6, RS6, S8 RS8 if any with my eyes closed. The flippin things look the same as Henry Fords Chitty chitty bang bangs looked the same. Come to think of it that grill is really a Chitty chitty bang bang grill. How can you honestly anticipate to see a car that is designed in one way and wrong way only. You see one you've seen them all. Only pipo with amnesia will like the design coz they forget easily. Merc changed their design, BMW changed their design even Hyundai and Honda change their design.

Very funny, mate, every BMW has nostril grills, and talk about in-consistency. Only you and 50 year old mums who dont know anything about cars dont notice the difference between the models. You can drive your classless cars elsewhere.

A BMw driver has racing blood rushing through their veins and that's one fact you can not deny. What car is used as the bench mark in Mid exec cars? Audi. Wrong answer. The answer you so much know is the car you hate to love. Like you i hated them butonce i test drove the E36 325i, it blew my mind. The BMW striaght 6 is a super engine and is known the world over. Their rear wheel drive, dynamics are top drawer. That is what a car is for -Dynamics. Now your car called an Audi, is 4 wheel drive, has one design to it and only is different in size, has the same boring understated interior( boring steering), and above all has the same boring sliced bread look on the side view. Know you tell me what granny would drive a car that wil give her a heart attack when the back teasingly slips out. None. But i have seen alot of mental patients drive the so called shopping trolleys in the name of Audi. Accept it your brand is so much chasing after BMW not Merc but BMW for one reason only. BMW is the bench mark and that's why every racer you ask will go for one, like a Ferrari over a Lamborghini. 4 wheel cars are for mental patients.

kevoluetion
February 25, 2008 1:24:42 PM

Merc is an old mans car, the closest thing they have is BMW, so dont get too excited. If you think Audi has only 1 design to it, then I guess u dont like Porches and Lamborghinis (opps its by Audi?) Who shares the same if not similar interior as R8 and TT. Where did the Reventon come from? 325 blew your mind? u r easily impressed, no wonder u r impressed by BMW. "4 wheel are for mental patients" just proves how mature BMW drivers are.

February 27, 2008 5:00:31 AM

Wisp, funny how you mention "4 wheel drive is for mental patients," since Lambos are 4 wheel drives and owned by Audi. How about the GTR or 911 turbo? They are both all wheel drive and are among the greatest cars ever produced?

The last time i checked F1 i didn't see a VW stable engine. Please do not talk about Le Mans coz that is for washed out racers. F1 leads and if you want to prove your self on how good your engineering is try F1. Who holds the fastest lap in F1? BMW Juan pablo Montoya BMW powered williams. Who held the record before? Keke Rosberg, BMW 1.5 litre Turbo (1000Kw from as little as 1.5 litre), Who powered the all conquering Mclaren? BMW. we didn't need 16 cylinders and multiple turbos and radiators to get into the sub 3.5 secs/100metres like your stables car - the Bugatti. Who won the last 2 years engine of the Year, BMW 325i in the 2.5 litre and below as well as the all conquering M5 10 cylinder engine. Oh yeah i have not forgotten the 2.9 litre engine turbo on the 335i.Audi can only beat BMW if 1. they increase there capacity well above BMW's and Turbo charge them like the RS6 to the M5, like the RS4 to the E90 M3 six cylinder, like the floppy S4's to the M3 (failed terribly in that department. So yes we are your bench mark and there's nothing you can do about it. The earlier you accept it the better. Who created a montrous car that is only good for the straight and fails to handle twists and turns? Audi in the form of Bugatti. Look and learn. Nissan didn't need to be extravagant to creat a Porshce thumping GTR, notr did BMw need to be hot headed in having the Rolls in their books. Oh did i tell u that Rolls is under BMW. Your turn.

February 25, 2008 11:32:35 PM

Both are great brands, and it's true that BMW has traditionally been the reference in sport sedans and coupés that everyone's tried to match over the years (dynamically that is), but the big irony is that they're going somehow backwards while the competition if getting closer and closer (lack of lsd in the 3 and 5 series (non M), new 135i tuned to understeer, gay artificial active steering, heavy M6 with "slow" robotized gearbox vs lightweight manual R8, and so on...) As someone said, it's about time engineers dedicated to the X5/7-series development keep their noses off the 3-5-6 series' R&D.

Oh, Topgear and a few other motoring journalists have already compared the new A4 to the new Merc C class. Both sports spec packed and it's not surprising that the Merc turns heads whereever it goes, has better dynamics, better design and is miles ahead in name and fan base compared to car that has come out with the loud statement "spot the difference". Yawn. The comparison by the motoring specialist was that Audi has once again drawn the short straw. Keep on Galloping on front wheels or 4 wheels. Two legs good, 4 legs bad.

Extract from Topgear "Lexus ISf: ...And yet, right now, we have several extraordinary cars that manage it to varying degrees of success. The Merc C63 is properly mental. The RS4 (I know it's out of production), is a brilliant, brilliant thing. The BMW M3 brings together so much tech and knowledge that the sheer speed it can amass is almost inconceivable... Of the 3 which one do you think from these statements recieved the highest praise?

wisp
February 26, 2008 7:57:22 AM

Yet more Lexus ISF report by Topgear... It (lexus) isn't particularly hardcore, really. Not when faced with the M3 or the C63. It's actually more like the RS4 - a better all-rounder that loses perhaps the last five per cent of speed in pursuit of the real world. The steering has an awfully dead feel to it, and there's a dearth of seat-of-the-pants information. But there's an ease to the eight-speed auto and creamy-smooth V8 that means you could live with this car... Someone not too long ago said that AMerc is for old pipo... wrong again. Merc AMG is a car for boys with ...you know what i mean.

ck314

C63 is faster and more hardocre than the M3 yet. You turn the power on and it feels like a Corvette in boxes @ Le Mans.

um wisp the 325 impresses you? try driving the rs4 or the s4. you say all audis look the same? what about the 325, 330 and m3? they all have the same body structure just like the a4 s4 and rs4. its what all car companys do right? the rs4 and the new m3 are always compared, which doesnt make sense because one is two door one is four door. shouldnt the rs4 be compared to the new m3 sedan? yes it should, but if they did it wouldnt be a race, or even a close comparison. and the rs4 is 4 years older than the m3. ill tell you this, bmw makes amazing cars, but so does audi...

GALLARDO520
February 27, 2008 3:53:02 AM

and why do you have to bring up the bugatti? because its faster than every car bmw made? why would they use 16 cylinders and 4 turbos, becasue they can. bmw couldnt make a car even close to the bugatti. oh and i know many people that drive bmws that definetly do not have racing blood running through their veins hahah. and whats this about 4 wheel drive is for mental patients? why cause it handles much better than the rear wheel drives? gallardo over f430. rs4 over m3. put them on the track and 4 wheel drive drives way better than rear wheel no matter how fast.
