2009 Acura RL Revealed in Chicago

Acura's flagship RL sedan updated for 2009

A big update for Acura's flagship sedan gives the RL striking face for perhaps the first time in its career. A big, shield-shaped grille leads the way and leaves no doubt as to its identity, and Acura says that striking look will spread across the lineup to improve the brand's visual impact. A new 3.7 liter V6 is Acura's first engine with VTEC variable valve timing on an SOHC engine, and it makes 300 horsepower. Acura's Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive is along for the ride again, of course, and it's all controlled through a five-speed automatic transmission. The SH-AWD's responsiveness has been improved for 2009.

The hardware hasn't changed all that much, as Acura's concentrated on the amenities and ride. Improved sound deadening in the form of an Active Sound Abatement system mutes the ride, while an interior restyling improves rear-seat room. The new RL's navigation system now includes real-time weather and traffic updates via XM satellite radio. It'll give you restaurant ratings as well. The high-tech continues with adaptive cruise control, active front lighting that turns with the front wheels and Acura's new Collision Mitigating Braking System (CMBS) which works with the adaptive cruise control to reduce impact speed in the event of an unavoidable crash.

The RL goes on sale this spring.

...the Honda accord looks better and looks like it cost more...this RL looks more like a Honda than any that have gone before...who is doing design for Acura these days ... Helen Keller ?

Definitely the old 1 was better, no doubt about it.

When is Acura going to step up and produce a big daddy luxury car to compete with all the you know who's? Seriously, this car is a joke. I'd rather by a Phaeton.

Come on Honda/Acura! Looks elegant yet unoriginal and still quite boring... as far as the article's author stating that this is the first time Honda/Acura has been using VTEC in a SOHC engine.. untrue... Honda has been using this tech in SOHC motors in japan since late 1980's and worldwide since early 1990's. this statement could possibly be true for i-VTEC though.

nickkop, the article is untrue because it left out this little detail that was in the press release: "first ever SOHC use of VTEC® valvetrain actuation for both the intake and exhaust valves." Previous SOHC VTEC systems only worked for the intake valves, but this one acts upon both intake and exhaust just like the DOHC VTEC system.

Yawn, another dull saloon like the new Mitsubishi Galant that came out the other day... BORING!

This is the cheapest design ever. I dont even care how good the drivetrain could be, it s the ugliest thing. It can be outcompeted by the beautiful "Infiniti M45 rocks, game over." That s what caranddriver said and they stick to this comment.

Acura should have made this a DOHC motor, then it could double as a basis for the next NSX motor, assuming it will be light and nimble still

Looks like a friggin Saturn, but I do like the rear end of the car. Current version is much better looking than this contraption.

I looked at this care for about a second, my gut felt sick, and I thought... "this was the big reveal!?" I am with you guys, what were they trying to do, take us back to the 90's? Nothing about this care really makes me want it, and the 'my grille now matches the MDX' crap is old! I wish car companies would stop making every car look like it's 'siblings' - give each car some of its own mojo! Geeeez!

Peace!
