Porsche 911: “Best Automobile in the World”

So Say 95,000 People

About 95 000 readers of the German publication Auto motor und sport have unanimously chosen the Porsche 911 Carrera as the “Best Automobile in the World” for its category of drop-top. These awards have become a second nature for Porsche, as its 911 Turbos and Cabriolets have won 37 best trophies since the start of the awards back in 1977. This fact, along with the 911’s basic shape, seems to have remained the same for 31 years then.

Important recognition for Porsche from one of the most influential magazines in the motor industry, especially considering that 49 other convertibles and cabriolets (depending on where you live) were soundly beaten, again, in this category. In the awards’ history a Porsche has either won a category, or taken second place where it was entered, which seems like a really good record to beat.

One area where Porsche pride themselves but have never really been recognised by expert scribes is in the World Engine of the Year competition. Perhaps this year they will go one better than last year and win two. It would be interesting if an Italian version of the magazine appeared, just to see what sort of vehicles would win.

Mercs are Mercs. Porsche's success reigns not only because of their style, engine, technology and etc, but also because they don't mess with success. 30 years ago, if a car enthusiast was to see the 911's that are out today they would be able to recognize it just by looking at it. You can't say that about other cars. Maybe the VW Beetle and the Mini Cooper. Porsche doesn't sell out to what people want (generally, although they gave in and made a freakin SUV and a Cayman), they just continue to do what they believe is best. Which is why the old design still finds success today.

i agree...altho many people complain that porsche's designs are getting old, they are still amongst the best out there. and while the cayenne is a big mistake in the eyes of purists, the cayman is a great car, and with a more poweful engine could be as good, if not better, than the 911.

Yea, I agree the Cayman is a great car. I feel like they need either a better design for it or put some more power to it. I rode in one Cayman (not the S) before through the canyons and it was sweet. Soo sweet.

Don't you think Porsche's engines are too loud and noisy for 'World Engine of the Year'? It doesn't give you that refined feeling of other quiet engines.

apors1, I was speaking for the "World Engine of the Year Award"s perspective. Looking at their winners, they seem to consider 'refinement' to be their top priority. They have freaking Toyota on the list; enough said. refined = gay = _M7_??? I'm sure you prefer men's rear end, not TVR SAGARIS jajaja

Mercedes SL has as much storied history as the 911. Remember the gullwing and 300SL roadsters from the 1950s? Remember Stirling Moss driving one of these in the 1955 Mille Miglia?

"Mercedes SL has as much storied history as the 911. Remember the gullwing and 300SL roadsters from the 1950s?"

The SL-class of Mercedes has evolved into a heavy luxury GT car. "SL" means "Sport Leicht" or "Sport Light", but modern SL's are no longer lightweight, I guess the "L" can now mean luxurious. The V6 SL350 for example weighs 1755 kg(3869 lb). The Porsche 911 on the other hand has stuck closer to the basic formula used by the early 911s.

Wrong! The best car in the world is a Porsche turbo Cabriolet with nany-blue painting and navy-blue leather.

Porsche's designs have been a constant evolution, never an eyesore, never revolutionary. just gradualy changing. That makes it easy to accept every model of the 911 cause they all basically are the same thing. Very few cars can tick the yes boxes in as many different categories of measure as the 911 can.

My favourite porsche is still the 1997 911 Turbo.

If you have driven this car you only choose can that. But there is still one car better. and this is a cayman with the engin from an carrera or carrera turbo. Mid engine rocks.

911 Carrera must be one of the best cars in the world. Just look at it. It still has the same design just like 50 years ago, but still looks so sexy. Although The Best in my opinion should be the S-Class. I think the MB cars are just what an ordinary and rich driver needs. But in the top 5 I would place 4 MBs and the 911. After all Mecedes Benz is the reason we don't have to walk. So by all means MB must always be NO.1 no matter what. Thank you Mercedes Benz. The only thing important is that it's a MB and everything else is irrelevant. Take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti87YMUw8Js&feature=related Let just say that cars produced in Stuttgart are the best in the world so we don't have to argue:-)
