Five door sedan

Skoda today released a few more images of their new Skoda Superb together with some new info about their flagship model. Starting with the engine choice. There has been some talk about the 1.8 liter TFSI being a small entry-level engine, but it gets better. The actual entry level engine for the Passat-ish Skoda Superb is an all-new four-cylinder 1.4 liter TSI producing 92 kW / 123 hp. The other gasoline engines are a 1.8 liter TFSI (118 kW / 158 hp) and the brand new 3.6 liter FSI V6 (191 kW / 256 hp), the diesel option includes a 1.9 TDI PD DPF (77 kW / 103 hp), 2.0 TDI PD DPF (103 kW / 138 hp) and the all new 2.0 TDI CR DPF (125 kW / 168 hp).

More interestingly are the interior photo and the introduction of the Twindoor system to the Skoda Superb. Twindoor is a unique tailgate opening system which allows the trunk door to be opened either like a sedan, where only the boot lid opens, or like a hatchback where the rearwindow also tilts open for easy access. The attached image shows the sedan option outlined in green and the hatchback option in red. The trunk can hold 565 liters of luggage.

Press Release (Click to expand)

The successor to Škoda Auto's existing flagship that is about to receive a premiere at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show offers new design elements, smart technological solutions and new engines.

Ranging from 77 to 191 kW, three petrol and three diesel engines will be available for the new Škoda Superb. Besides manual transmissions, the portfolio will include automatic DSG transmissions and the fourth generation of the Haldex four-wheel drive system.

All petrol engines are equipped with a direct injection system to reduce fuel consumption and improve the engines' environmental parameters. The petrol engine portfolio includes the all-new four-cylinder 1.4 TSI (92 kW), the 1.8 TSI (118 kW) and the brand new 3.6 FSI V6 (191 kW). The most powerful version of the Superb will only be available with an automatic DSG transmission and a four-wheel drive system and will appear in the market shortly after the official launch of the new model.

The diesel engine portfolio includes 1.9 TDI PD DPF (77 kW), 2.0 TDI PD DPF (103 kW) and the all-new 2.0 TDI CR DPF (125 kW) with common rail injection.

Another major innovation is TWINDOOR, a unique tailgate opening system developed and patented by Škoda engineers. This smart and useful solution makes it possible to open either just the boot lid and put small pieces of luggage inside the vehicle or lift the whole tailgate including the rear window, which makes the use of the boot significantly more flexible and comfortable. The sophisticated and well accessible boot offers 565 litres of load space in the basic arrangement, by 85 litres more as compared to the existing model.

On top of the above, the new Superb is going to offer a whole lot of other innovations and design solutions, e.g., AFS (Adaptive Frontlight System) that makes use of the possibility of changing the geometry of the headlamp beam and adapting the lighting in front of the vehicle to suit different driving conditions, thus enabling the driver to identify obstacles and react to them in time even more flexibly than today. Another example of innovation is the all-new high-tech navigation system with a touch screen and a hard disk.

The new Škoda Superb has been developed in Škoda Auto's Technological Development Department in Mladá Boleslav, the third largest development centre in VW. Just like the brand alone, the Škoda development centre is growing dynamically. Its current extension that is part of the project of building the new Škoda Auto Technology Centre is backed by a EUR 38 million investment. Škoda Auto uses state-of-the-art technology for its vehicle development operations, including a virtual reality centre that makes it possible to significantly reduce and optimise the development process, particularly in the stages of designing the vehicle's exterior and interior, ergonomics as well as integration of various equipment levels.

The Twindoor system is a great idea, i can't belive nobody figured it out earlier

I figured it out :) some years ago in some own conceptions, but I saw, that it makes not the economical sence. I like the new Superb! The Design and the designline is unique (for a konservative understatement) I whould prefer it 10 times more then a Passat

it was March 5, 1962, while working in my basement, i tripped and bump my head on the counter-top. then it flashed in my head...the twin door system. now i sold it to skoda and became an instant millionaire. then i went out and bought me a BMW. i died and went to heaven.

No, I figured it out!

its not bad actually ... but its special for its price

Too bad it's so bulky and ugly sideways, the front end looks great though, even if somehow BMW reminiscent. Interior nice but déjà-vu. I'd eventually buy one for discreet chauffeur transportation if I get my permit confiscated for 6 months due to overspeeding my 911 GT3.

it looks nice, the interior has changed (finally) but the thing is that i dunno why they still use the hand brakes most cars in its range use buttons or somethin else for hand brakes.

look at it from the front side it looks like bmw 3 series

by BASSAM | January 26, 2008 6:23 AM
I thought exactly the same so there's probably some truth in it.

While the overall look is O.K. with me, I somehow can't develop a little love for the rear end. Too Renault-ish.

it looks really nice, interior is really changed. good job skoda.

by designerr | January 26, 2008 11:08 AM
looks like a renault...

i was hoping for a better design... skoda is going the wrong direction... the old octavia was nice... to translate that into a new design would have been cool... but to go the french direction is just wrong...

also the little transporter looks ugly, wheels too small, out of proportion...

by smokeonit1 | January 26, 2008 6:24 PM
and the side view looks like a volvo... and we know how their sales are going.... down....

by smokeonit1 | January 26, 2008 6:24 PM
Volvo's look better because eventhough they're FWD their engine is transversally mounted which allows for a bigger axis-to-dash ratio and shorter front overhang, thus being closer to a sleeker RWD design. Anyway, this is the outcome of an aristocrat (BMW) having sex with the maid (Logan-Renault) lol

Iam very excited about this car,its looks great in the pictures, looking forward to seeing it in the flesh,Skoda cant do anything wrong these days it seems, this vehicle is further proof, even though its similar to a passat underneath it wont be as common, its will compete against the Mondeo and Passat head to head but its hatchback versatility and interior space make it somewhat a niche car, half price Phaeton anyone?

by rdsreference | January 26, 2008 11:45 PM
Did Bangle get his hands on this?

by stillthewhizz | January 27, 2008 12:53 AM
jaguar much??? this looks almost identical in some ways such as the tail lights, the hood, and even the front lights and parts of the interior to the jaguar XF. dunno if its just me but a little unoriginal by skoda still a nice car though!

by carcrazy1234 | January 27, 2008 7:17 PM
I love the new design except for the rear end. To my mind, it resembles a Renault Laguna or even worse any kinf of an Korean car. In an interview the project manager told that due to the press' resonance, there would be still some time to put the finishing touches to the new Superb. Hopefully they'll do so!

by sfero | January 27, 2008 11:07 PM
It will be used as a taxi surely, here in Madrid. Most of the taxis you can find here in this city are Skodas

The twin door system looks really smart.
